Review: 2015 LDV Winery Petite Sirah and Petite Sirah Signature

by Christopher Null

Pearce, Arizona-based LDV presents two wines for us — both 100% petite sirah bottlings from the 2015 vintage. (Yes, these are current releases.) What does a hot climate do with a difficult grape like petite sirah? Let’s find out.

2015 LDV Winery Petite Sirah – Quite extracted from the start, you could be forgiven for assuming this was some sort of dessert wine, dense with raisin and dried plum notes before moving into a mix of milk chocolate and baking spice, heavy with nutmeg. Sweet to a fault from start to finish, I found some of the underlying flavors worthwhile, but the overall wine much too dense and sugary to finish a glass. C / $40

2015 LDV Winery Petite Sirah Signature – Also very extracted and dense, but this bottling — aged only 33 months instead of 35 — has more to distinguish and recommend it, including a punch of licorice that tempers some of the heavy, weighty black fruit in the mix. Heavier notes of (darker) chocolate and a clearer vanilla note add sweetness but also mute some of the underlying spice. Overall, it’s still an extremely rich, heady wine — but one with better balance all around. B / $48

David Hogg is Confused: None of Our Rights Are Absolute

David Hogg is Confused: None of Our Rights Are Absolute

Imagine a Harvard man who can’t seem to write three sentences without contradicting himself. If you’re thinking of inveterate attention whore called David Hogg, you win a cookie. The awardee of an undergraduate place at Harvard has taken to Twitter to opine that the Second Amendment isn’t an absolute right.

“None of our rights are,” he continued.

Then he declares that “We have a right not to be shot.”

The second amendment is not an absolute right.

Casus belli

by Commander Zero

Gotta say…no burning police stations, no flipped over police cars, no looted Starbucks….still a more peaceful protest than your average BLM march.

Doesn’t matter though… these are the sorts of optics that people need to further an agenda of nerfing your gun rights. They’ll say that, clearly, there is a ‘clear and present danger’ in America of ‘right wing extremists’ and that those ‘weapons of war have no place on our streets’ and that ‘reasonable, commonsense’ legislation is needed to……, etc, etc, etc.

Probably add in body armour just for good measure…’cause those ‘right wing extremists’ were armored up against the ‘legitimate government’.

Regardless of where you stand on the issue of electoral misconduct and impropriety, it’s hard to not think that all this news footage of outrage and outrageousness isn’t going to come back in the form of justification for some sort of Draconian legislation.

I’ve been banging this drum for years, that a new ban was coming…… maybe this is the year. Certainly, it seems more likely this year than at any point previously. Take your stimulus money and grab a couple stripped lowers and a twenty-pack of magazines, guys…might be glad you did in the not too distant future.

TFBTV Reviews the Maven RS.4 5-30X56 Scope

by James Reeves

$1,800 doesn’t sound cheap, but when you are competing against German optics that cost over twice as much, the Maven RS.4 sounds like a reasonably priced piece of glass. James has used the Maven RS.4 at Thunder Ranch and his own range for the past few months to see where the RS.4 excelled and if […]

Tell Us What You Have Been Reading Lately

by Bradley Brownell

After using the last seven weeks to binge the entire Breaking Bad anthology on Netflix, I’ve drained my entire being of feeling and needed something to lift my spirits, even slightly. On Sunday I committed myself to a screen-free day and spent much of it out in the sunshine of my fenced backyard reading a good book.…

A Reminder That Money Doesn't Buy Taste

by Kristen Lee

It does not do, as I have always said, to be merely rich. Any idiot can be rich. But to be rich and have the taste and class to boot? This is where it gets tricky. I am not surprised, yet again, that I have to explain this to people.

Need For Speed Payback Tries To Do Too Much At Once

by Kristen Lee

The Need For Speed Payback plot, as far as I could tell from the trailers and the pressers that Electronic Arts sent me, would have us crash our way through a very Fast and Furious-style above-the-law campaign where cop chases, heists and wanton street racing were common. And if the game was comprised of just that, it…
