NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti Graphics Card Specifications - Full Fat GA102 GPU & 24 GB GDDR6X Memory
At the heart of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti graphics card lies the GA102 GPU. The GA102 is one of the many Ampere GPUs that we will be getting on the gaming segment. The GA102 GPU is the fastest gaming GPU that NVIDIA has produced. The GPU is based on Samsung's 8nm custom process node designed specifically for NVIDIA and features a total of 28 Billion transistors. It measures 628mm2 which makes it the 2nd biggest gaming GPU ever produced right below the Turing TU102 GPU.
The new shader core on the NVIDIA Ampere architecture is 2.7x faster, the new RT cores are 1.7x faster while the new Tensor cores are up to 2.7x faster than the previous generation Turing GPUs. The 2nd Generation RT core delivers dedicated hardware-accelerated ray-tracing performance & features twice the ray/triangles intersection with concurrent RT graphics and compute operations.
For the GeForce RTX 3090, NVIDIA has enabled a total of 84 SM units on its flagship which results in a total of 10,752 CUDA cores (vs 82 SM / 10496 cores on RTX 3090 Non-Ti). In addition to the CUDA cores, NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 3090 Ti also comes packed with next-generation RT (Ray-Tracing) cores, Tensor cores, and brand new SM or streaming multi-processor units. The GPU runs at a base clock speed of 1560 MHz and a boost clock speed of 1860 MHz. The card has a TDP of 450W.
In terms of memory, the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti comes packed with 240 GB of memory and that too the next-generation GDDR6X design. With Micron's latest and greatest graphics memory dies, the RTX 3090 Ti can deliver GDDR6X memory speeds of 21 Gbps. That along with a bus interface of 384-bit will deliver a cumulative bandwidth of 1008 Gbps.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti Graphics Card Cooling & Design- Next-Gen NVTTM Founders Edition Design
NVIDIA has developed one of their best and most powerful Founders Edition cooling designs to date for the GeForce RTX 30 series graphics cards. NVIDIA explained that higher performance requires a new form of cooling solution and as such, it has prepared a unique cooling solution for its next-gen cards which will keep GPUs running cool while staying quiet by utilizing several new & existing technologies.
The Founders Edition cooling makes use of a full aluminum alloy heatsink which makes use of a hybrid vapor chamber with dual-sided axial-tech-based fans. The cooler heatsink is coated with a nano-carbon coating and should do a really good job at keeping the temperatures in control.
The design is interesting in the sense that not only does it goes all out with a fin and heat pipe design. This is the first design of its kind since the original Founders Edition GeForce GTX 780 that makes use of a much larger heatsink area.
It also comes with a unique fan placement, one on the front and one at the bottom. This push & pull fan configuration which as it is referred to is said to push heat out of the exhaust vents much more effectively. There will be some air that will be blown out inside the case from the back of the card itself but that shouldn't be a major cause of concern as modern CPU Air or Liquid coolers do a really good job venting out air from within the case.
Acoustically, the new Founders Edition design is quieter than traditional dual axial coolers, while still delivering nearly 2x the cooling performance of previous-generation solutions. The aforementioned NVLink and power design changes help here, creating more space for airflow through the largest fin stack seen to date, and the larger bracket vents improve airflow in concert with individually shaped shroud fins. In fact, wherever you look, every aspect of the Founders Edition cards is designed to maximize airflow, minimize temperatures, and enable the highest levels of performance with the least possible noise.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti Graphics Card PCB & 12-Pin Power Input
One of the biggest changes on the Founders Edition GeForce RTX 30 series graphics cards is the PCB design. The GeForce RTX 3090 Ti comes with a unique & compact PCB package that is unlike anything we've seen in the consumer space before. But being compact doesn't mean that the cards don't pack a punch. There's some serious horsepower on these compact PCBs that NVIDIA has designed.
The PCB features over 18 power chokes which put it is a more premium design than the flagship non-reference RTX 20 series cards. The GeForce RTX 3090 Ti is powered by a 22 phase design that is insane and designed to be overclocked with unprecedented GPU overclock headroom that most users can leverage to gain even faster performance.
In addition to that, GeForce RTX 30 series Founders Edition cards will be featuring the 12-pin Micro-Fit 3.0 power connectors. These connectors don't require a power supply upgrade as the cards will ship with bundled 2x 8-pin to 1x 12-pin connectors so you can run your latest graphics card without any compatibility issues.
The placement of the 12-pin connector on the PCB is also noteworthy. It is placed in a vertical position and judging by the PCB design, we can tell why NVIDIA moved to a single 12-pin plug instead of the standard dual 8-pin design. There's limited room on the PCB to do stuff and as such, it was necessary to go for a more small and compact power input.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti Graphics Card Price & Availability - Both Custom & Reference Designs at Launch
The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti is being announced today and will be launching to consumers on the 27th of January, 2022. The card will be available in both reference and custom flavors at launch but considering the existing market situation, expect retail prices to vary between $2500-$3000 US.
There aren't any performance numbers that NVIDIA is sharing right now but from what has been showcased, the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti is faster than the RTX 3090 Non-Ti and also displaces the RX 6900 XT.

NVIDIA plans to make 1440p/360Hz the new esports standard
For basically the entire modern history of esports, 1080p has been the sweet spot for competitive gaming. The wisdom goes that a 1920 x 1080 pixel grid gives enough clarity to follow all of the gameplay, while also being light enough that the GPU can process hundreds of frames per second, giving a competitive advantage (or, at least, leveling the playing field).
GPUs today have outgrown 1080p in a big way, though, with flagship cards being able to pump out framerates way above the peak of monitor refresh rates in certain titles. Valorant, for example, can be played at High settings well in excess of 500 fps on NVIDIA’s latest and greatest, while older titles like CS:GO hit over 700 fps.
NVIDIA says that an RTX 3080 paired with an Intel i9-12900K can play Valorant, CS:GO, Overwatch and Rainbow Six Seige in excess of 360 fps at 1440p. With that in mind, the company thinks the time is right for the leap beyond 1080p.
Obviously NVIDIA is motivated by the need to convince gamers to buy expensive GPUs, but apparently there’s a competitive benefit to playing at higher resolution. NVIDIA's own researchers found that a 27-inch 1440p display can improve aiming “by up to 3 percent” over the 24-inch 1080p sets used by current pros.
This new “1440p esports category” begins with four NVIDIA-certified displays: the ASUS ROG Swift 360Hz PG27AQN, the AOC AG274QGM - AGON PRO Mini LED, the MSI MEG 271Q Mini LED and the ViewSonic XG272G-2K Mini LED. The ASUS set is a 360Hz monitor, while the others feature Mini LED backlights but cap out at 300Hz.
All four monitors support G-Sync adaptive refresh rates, an “Esports Vibrance” color mode and, more importantly for the target audience, support NVIDIA’s Reflex latency analyzer. Intriguingly, the new monitors also come with a “1080p mode,” which blanks out the outer edges of the screen to provide a 25-inch 1080p “display” for gaming. There must be some clever scaling going on here, as a 1:1 1080p rendering on a 27-inch 1440p monitor would be a 21-ish inch image. Either way, this mode would be vital for some games – newer esports titles can be more graphically intense than the stalwarts, and playing at 1440p could sacrifice the sort of refresh rates esports pros want for competitive play.
There’s no word on pricing yet, although don’t expect them to be remotely affordable for the average gamer. As for when they’ll be available, NVIDIA has only given out the vague “soon.”

The RTX 3090 Ti is NVIDIA’s new-new flagship GPU
At its CES press conference today, NVIDIA teased a new flagship GPU: the RTX 3090 Ti. It says more details will arrive soon, but handed out a few specs to tide its fans over until then.
As a refresher, NVIDIA currently has the RTX 3090 at the top of its stack, with the RTX 3080 Ti close behind and the RTX 3080 as the mainstream flagship. All three are based on the same GA102 chip, with the number of active cores, clock speeds and memory configurations being the key differentiators. The RTX 3090 Ti will usurp the 3090 as the ultra high-end GPU outside of its creator line.
Like the 3090, the 3090 Ti will have 24GB of GDDR6X memory, except it’ll be running at 21Gbit/s, as opposed to the 19.5Gbit/s of the 3090’s memory. NVIDIA also says the GPU is capable of calculating 40 shader teraflops, 78 RT teraflops and 320 tensor (AI) teraflops That compares to the 3090’s 35.6 shader teraflops, 69.5 RT teraflops and 285 tensor teraflops.
Those figures represent a 12.5-ish percent increase over the 3090 across the board, and will likely make the 3090 Ti the most powerful gaming card ever released. We won’t know exactly how NVIDIA has achieved this until it shares full specs, but we can make some educated guesses.
The 3090 only has 82 out of the GA102’s 84 streaming multiprocessors activated, so it’s likely the 3090 Ti has all 84 running. Then, in addition to the memory clocks being a little faster, it’s likely NVIDIA has elevated the main GPU clock speeds slightly. Some napkin math suggests the boost clock will need to be at around 1,850MHz on the 3090 Ti (compared to 1,695MHz on the 3090) to reach the 40-teraflop figure NVIDIA has provided.
NVIDIA says “more details will be coming later this month,” so we’d expect a small event focused on the 3090 Ti to be announced soon, where we’ll find out how exorbitantly priced the 3090 Ti will be – remember that the 3090 itself has an RRP of $1,500 – and when people will theoretically be able to buy one.
Also announced at CES is the RTX 3050, which is set to become the cheapest 30-series desktop GPU to date. NVIDIA hasn’t given us full specifications on this one either, but it has 8GB of GDDR6 memory, and will be able to calculate 9 shader teraflops, 18 RT teraflops and 73 tensor teraflops. NVIDIA says it’ll be able to power “the latest ray-traced games at over 60 frames per second,” which is probably true if factoring in the company’s DLSS upscaling tech.
As is usually the case with lower-end cards, there won’t be a “founders” edition sold directly by NVIDIA, but the RTX 3050 will go on sale through the company’s various hardware partners on January 27th, with an RRP of $250.

Happy New Year, folks! 2021 may be behind us now, but before we start looking ahead to all the hip new video games coming our way this year, we thought it was as good a time as any to look back at all of our favourites from the last twelve months. If you kept up to date with our hale and healthy Advent Calendar over the course of December, then you'll already know our game of the year selections for 2021, but this post gathers all those lovely words and entries together into one handy list.
CES 2022: AMD confirms Ryzen 7000 CPUs, Radeon RX 6500 XT graphics card and more
It’s the first week of 2022 and that means – yes! – all the big PC hardware movers and shakers are hosting their CES 2022 events. On the same day. Within a couple of hours of each other. But my stress is your gain, as there are and will be some major announcements on new kit, starting with AMD. Their freshly-announced hardware includes an assortment of new CPUs, desktop and mobile graphics cards and even some laptop APUs – APUs that sound a lot more useful for gaming that what current integrated graphics can offer. There’s even an Nvidia Image Scaling rival in the upcoming, driver-level Radeon Super Resolution feature.
NVIDIA Announces The GeForce RTX 3050, RTX 3090 Ti
AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution To Become Driver Feature: Radeon Super Resolution
As well as delivering hardware updates for both their desktop and mobile lineups this morning, as part of AMD’s CES 2022 keynote, the company also offered a quick update on their Radeon driver plans for the first quarter of the year. The big takeaway here is that AMD is going to be expanding the accessibility of their FidelityFX Super Resolution image upscaling technology by integrating it into their drivers as a forced override option. Slated to land in a future version of AMD’s driver stack this quarter, the driver-based feature will be promoted as Radeon Super Resolution.
As a quick refresher, AMD first released their spatial image upscaling technology, FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), back in June. As part of the company’s suite of open source FidelityFX libraries, game developers were free to integrate the image upscaling algorithm into their games by including AMD’s shader program as a step in their image rendering pipeline. The net results of FSR have been mixed from an image quality standpoint, but the shader-based approach is very cheap to execute, and it can be used on a wide range of GPUs (including NVIDIA and Intel parts).
AMD has been quick to score a number of developers who have included FSR within their games, but even then, PC gamers have been interested in applying it to additional games. In the last several months this has led to the introduction of utilities like Magpie and Lossless Scaling, which can force various image upscaling techniques on games, including AMD’s FSR. And while forcing FSR in this fashion isn’t ideal from a quality or compatibility standpoint (leading to AMD originally passing on the idea), AMD has since come around on the idea. To that end, AMD will be implementing a form of FSR in their drivers as an override option, which they will be calling Radeon Super Resolution (RSR).
As with Magpie and similar utilities, this will be a forced upscaling option that is implemented at the end of the rendering pipeline, rather than the more ideal mid-point. The ramifications of which are that RSR will be upscaling not just the image from the game, but the UI as well; so it will introduce some of the same UI distortion as running a game at a sub-native resolution to begin with.

It's Ideal To Run FSR Before Post-Processing Effects and the UI, But It's Not Required...
All of which is fitting, since that’s essentially what you have to do to make RSR work. Since this is a driver-forced feature, games need to be set to a sub-native rendering resolution in order to provide something to upscale – as well as to provide the performance benefits of rendering at a lower resolution. So using RSR won’t quite be a set-it-and-forget-it situation as games with proper FSR support offer today, but adjusting a game’s rendering resolution is about all the real work that’s required from the user.
At this point AMD is expecting it to work with most games. But like all driver override features like this, it may not work (or at least, not work well) with all games. In particular, it will require that a game supports and is running in exclusive fullscreen modes. So although AMD fully supports RSR, there is certainly an element of Your Mileage May Vary with respect to compatibility.
In the meantime, it should be noted that FSR itself won’t be going anywhere. As RSR itself is essentially a fallback implementation of FSR to force it at the driver level, properly integrating FSR into a rendering pipeline is still the best and most ideal way to use it. So RSR is not replacing FSR; rather it’s giving Radeon owners another way to access some of FSR’s functionality.
Moving on, AMD also has a couple more features slated for their forthcoming driver update that bear mentioning. First and foremost, AMD Link 5.0 is on its way. AMD’s remote game streaming feature was most recently updated with AMD Link 4 back in the spring, and now AMD is preparing the next iteration.
Finally, AMD will also be integrating a new feature called AMD Privacy View, which in turn will be based on licensed software from Eyeware. The basis behind Privacy View is that by using eye tracking and head tracking, AMD’s drivers will be able to determine what the user is looking at – and in the process deter shoulder surfers from being able to easily see a user’s screen. According to AMD, both this and AMD Link 5.0 are expected to land in AMD’s drivers in the first quarter of this year.
Zelda: Breath of the Wild Latest Graphic Pack Update Introduces Full Ultrawide Support, Improved Menu Navigation Speed and More

A new update for the Zelda: Breath of the Wild Graphic Pack introduces full ultrawide support, among other new features and fixes that make emulating the game on PC the best way to experience it even more than before.
The new update, which went live a few days ago, brings proper ultrawide support with correct HUD, GUI, and cutscene scaling. Modder Crementif also shared some screenshots that highlight how beautiful the game looks at ultrawide resolutions.
- Full ultrawide support, so no more ugly stretched HUD, GUIs and cutscenes! It supports any ultrawide aspect ratio and scales 50+ GUI screens/elements that had to be manually adjusted. It's fully compatible with mods too!
The new Zelda: Breath of the Wild Graphic Pack upgrade also introduces a new tree draw distance option, improved menu navigation speed, and a few more FPS++ improvements such as ragdoll physics fixes and a new feature that automatically lowers framerate to 30 FPS in cutscenes that crash when played at high framerates.
- FPS++ can now automatically lower the FPS to 30 in some cutscenes that are known to crash when running above 30-60FPS. While fixing the issue isn't possible due to memory issues, this is a workaround for those 2-4 cutscenes that'd normally crash. Let us know if you find a cutscene that still crashes. No video for that here, since it'd only spoil those cutscenes. You can change this option in the advanced settings.
Zelda: Breath of the Wild is now available on Nintendo Switch and Wii U worldwide.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB Graphics Card
For the GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB, NVIDIA has enabled a total of 70 SM units which results in a total of 8960 CUDA cores, a 3% increase over the standard RTX 3080. In addition to the CUDA cores, NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 3080 also comes packed with next-generation RT (Ray-Tracing) cores, Tensor cores, and brand new SM or streaming multi-processor units. The card is suggested to have a TDP of 350W.
In terms of memory, the updated GeForce RTX 3080 comes packed with 12 GB of memory and that too is the next-generation GDDR6X design. With Micron's latest and greatest graphics memory dies, the RTX 3080 can deliver GDDR6X memory speeds of 19.0 Gbps. That along with a bus interface of 384-bit will deliver a cumulative bandwidth of 912 GB/s or a 20% increase over the 10 GB variant.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti 16 GB Graphics Card
NVIDIA has also upgraded the RTX 3070 Ti to utilize more memory at a higher efficiency than the current RTX 3080 series. It would not be surprising since the GeForce RTX 3060 offers double the VRAM capacity but the rest of the specifications will remain the same. The card will be outfitted with the latest 21 Gbps GDDR6X modules across a 256-bit that will offer 672 GB/s of bandwidth, a 10% increase over the 8 GB variant. This will offer improved performance at high-resolution games and titles that utilize high-resolution textures.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 8 GB Graphics Card
Just like the GeForce RTX 3060, the GeForce RTX 3050 Ti will also be featuring the GA106 GPU but a cut-down configuration. The card will feature 20 SM units and 2560 CUDA cores with a TGP of 130 Watts. The entry-level graphics card will also rock 8 GB of GDDR6 memory clocked at 14 Gbps and will be running across a 128-bit wide bus interface for a total of 224 GB/s bandwidth. The graphics card will be priced at $249 US and will launch in several custom flavors on 27th January.
In terms of performance, the GeForce RTX 3050 8 GB graphics card will offer over 60 FPS at 1080p in several AAA titles and further extend the performance rating through the use of 2nd Gen RT and new Tensor cores, marking a big leap over the GeForce GTX 1650 graphics card.

Skyrim’s impressive role-playing overhaul mod ‘Requiem’ has come to SSE
An ambitious and hugely popular overhaul mod for Skyrim that's been around for years has now come to Skyrim Special Edition, making it playable for many more fans. Requiem aims to draw on old-school roleplaying elements to transform the game into a different, more challenging, and "organic" experience. It's been on Nexus Mods for the base version of the game since 2012, and now its modders have brought it to SSE.
Requiem is crafted by a small team of modders, writers, and testers, who have spent "several thousand hours" getting it to the point it's at now, which is an impressive overhaul mod that offers a whole new experience with a strong emphasis on more classic-style roleplaying. Key inspirations listed include previous Elder Scrolls games Morrowind and Daggerfall, as well as Gothic, Deus Ex, Baldur's Gate, and Icewind Dale, among others. The changes are extensive and far-reaching, but one of the biggest facets is that all challenges and rewards have been de-levelled with the mod.
"During early levels, a lack of healthy fear and preparation will quickly result in death," modders The Requiem Dungeon Masters explain. "Even as you grow in experience, combat will always remain deadly, as a sword or arrow in the gut is a death sentence without some measure of protection.

The fifth installment in the "Scream" franchise will be slashing its way into theaters on January 14, 2022, so it's the perfect time to take a look back on what made the first movie so compelling. Wes Craven's "Scream" was a potent little '90s horror cocktail, mixing genuine humor and fear with a meta narrative that broke down the genre while rolling around in it like a pig in muck. It's the film equivalent of a smirk and a wink, and while much has been written about its comedy and genre analysis, "Scream" doesn't pull any horror punches. Yeah, it's a film that will make you laugh, but it will just as easily make you squirm.
In an oral history of the first movie, The Hollywood Reporter pinpoints one of the film's elements that was so effective, it even unnerved the cast members. Starting with the famous opening scene with Drew Barrymore, the team decided that Roger Jackson (the creepy and iconic voice of Ghostface) wouldn't be added in post-production. Instead, according to editor Patrick Lussier, all of his phone calls were done live from a secret location:
One of the smartest things they did when they shot it was Roger Jackson, who does Ghostface's voice, the killer voice, he was on set. All those phone calls were done live. They were tapped into a phone, but Drew and none of the actors could see him. They didn't know what he looked like.
Do You Like Scary Movies?

Producer Marianne Maddalena backed up Lussier's story and added that the team went out of their way to keep Jackson away from the other actors, building on the mystery and paranoia that surrounds Ghostface's identity throughout the first film (and all of the subsequent films):
We hid him. We had separate rooms. He was never around. He was never at craft services. He was absolutely incognito. It made it scary for the actors and Wes just got better performances out of them. It's a completely different thing than a script supervisor reading the lines. He has an amazing voice, but I don't know how menacing he would be in person, you know?
It's hard to say if the opening scene to "Scream," in which Ghostface taunts Barrymore over the phone, would still be as effective if Barrymore had been acting off of a script supervisor or if she had spent time hanging out with Jackson on set, but it's equally hard to imagine a more visceral performance than the one we see on screen. As for Jackson's voice creeping out the actors, all we can say is, same. There's many reasons why "Scream" still captures the hearts and minds of horror fans, and Jackson's voice is one of them.

Not only do we have more superfan fun, and likely other seasons on the way to get us through whatever the hell comes next in the pandemic (please let it be dinosaurs in little hats), but we have a season 4 cold open clip where Michael Scott has a bit of a toilet issue. We've all dropped our phone in the toilet, and oh man, does that suck. However, I doubt any of us could have come up with the "solution" that Michael does.
In case you are one of the few people who haven't rewatched the series in a while, let's just say that this clip will remind you of why you loved it in the first place. Michael not only drops his cell phone in, but also his bluetooth, his wallet, his whitestrips, his tip calculator (which you don't need if you have a cellphone, Michael), and his candy corns. I ... I just ... why are you eating candy corns, Michael? I understand why Dwight would fish them out for him more than I understand why anyone would put such an abomination in their mouths. The toilet is where they belong! Fight me! Those candy corn Oreos can go in there as well. Rant over until October.

The Book Of Boba Fett Featurette Highlights Ming-Na Wen's Very Alive Master Assassin, Fennec Shand

Few franchises can rival "Star Wars" when it comes to resurrecting characters from apparent death, from Darth Maul (who, famously, met his untimely "end" after Obi-Wan Kenobi sliced him in half at the end of "The Phantom Menace" before returning for an extended storyline in "The Clone Wars," "Star Wars Rebels," and even a cameo reveal at the end of "Solo: A Star Wars Story") to Palpatine (who "somehow" came back) to Boba Fett himself -- you know, the star of "The Book of Boba Fett" and the reason this spin-off is even happening in the first place.
Of the many, many characters who've canonically bit the dust only to return later only a little worse for wear, Fennec Shand likely wouldn't be the first one to come to mind. It's true, however, that the mercenary, assassin, and bounty hunter originally seemed marked for death after her appearance in "The Mandalorian." Despite being left to die in the desert, none other than Boba Fett tracked her down and saved her life, leading to their team-up throughout the rest of "The Mandalorian" and through to "The Book of Boba Fett." This latest behind-the-scenes featurette for the new Disney+ series is all about Ming-Na Wen's Fennec Shand, which you can watch for yourself below.

"When I showed up on "The Mandalorian" Season 1, I died. But by the grace of the Force, I was resurrected."
Ming-Na Wen is living the dream. To go from a "Star Wars" fan to actually inhabiting the same space as these larger-than-life characters would be a lot for anyone to take in, and Wen is not taking any of it for granted. In a new featurette released by the official "The Book of Boba Fett" Twitter account, the actor behind Fennec Shand gets a well-deserved spotlight. Not only is the original character a boon for representation among both women and people of color, but Wen's ability to stand toe-to-toe with an actor of Temuera Morrison's status in the "Star Wars" world speaks for itself. But that doesn't mean Wen, director Robert Rodriguez, and Morrison aren't going to speak about it anyway. All three chime in with their thoughts on Wen as Fennec Shand in this brief clip, with Rodriguez saying, "I love working with Ming-Na. She plays Fennec as the ultimate foil to Boba. They balance each other out." Morrison's praise, meanwhile, could not be any higher:
"She has a great spark. We have great chemistry. And it's always good when the camera can capture a little bit of that vibe that happens between two actors when they're going at it."
We previously noted the bizarre, secret-laden circumstances that led to Wen arriving on set for "The Book of Boba Fett." but under the impression that she would be filming for the next season of "The Mandalorian." It's safe to say that things worked out just fine in their own way for the "Mulan," "ER," and "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." actor.

The Maximum Overdrive Scene That Became Way Too Real For The Cast

The sole directorial credit to master of horror Stephen King is largely considered to be one of the worst films ever made, and King has gone on record numerous times admitting that he directed the film while during the height of his addiction, "coked out of his mind," and doesn't even remember directing much of the film. As a proud apologist for "Maximum Overdrive," the accidental camp masterpiece has been a source of instant joy throughout my life, but I completely understand why so many people can't seem to get on board with the final product. Based on King's short story "Trucks," "Maximum Overdrive" is about a world gone mad after a radiation storm triggers machines on Earth to come to life and attack humans. A group of survivors hole up at a North Carolina diner/truck stop, surrounded by homicidal semi-trucks looking to run them down.
While most of the movie takes place at the truck stop, our introduction to the crazed machines takes place all over the city. Vending machines project cans of soda at unsuspecting players and coaches during a little league game, a roller compactor flattens a small child, and an ATM famously tells Stephen King in his director's cameo that he's an a-hole on its digital screen. However, there was one moment in "Maximum Overdrive" that crossed the threshold from fantasy into reality, when one of the rigged machines genuinely went out of control and put the lives of those working on set at risk.
Who Made Who

During one scene, the camera follows Deke (Holter Graham) riding his bike through the suburbs to sprinkler systems going off on their own, a delivery driver hanging out of the window as their car clearly purposefully crashed, a dead dog with a toy car lodged in its maw, a man bleeding from the ears with headphones still covering, a woman strangled by her blow dryer cord, a rogue ice cream truck driving itself, and most notably, a blood soaked lawn mower hell-bent on chasing him down. Fortunately, Deke could outrun the lawn mower and safely escapes, but some people on the set weren't so lucky.
Director of Photography Armando Nannuzzi was a legendary Italian cinematographer, and shot over 100 films throughout the course of his career. After working on "Silver Bullet," Nannuzzi was brought back to shoot his second King film, "Maximum Overdrive," and became the victim of his very own horror story. The lawn mower was remote controlled in order to give the appearance of running on its own, but at one point went out of control, running into a block of wood used to support the camera. As the lawnmower was functional, it chopped up the wood block and shot wood splinters everywhere. One of those splinters went directly into Nannuzzi, and he lost his right eye in the process. He sued Stephen King for $18 million in damages, but the suit was eventually settled out of court. Impressively, the loss of his eye didn't end Nannuzzi's career, and he continued to DP films, including Roger Corman's "Frankenstein Unbound."

How Marvel Kept The Hawkeye Villain Secret From Everyone, Including The Crew

Marvel Studios really likes their secrets — and judging by how intensely MCU fans worry about spoilers, so does everyone else. This penchant for secrecy has become one of the studios' greatest superpowers. In the age of the internet, it's gotten pretty difficult to keep casting surprises and even plot developments under wraps, especially when it comes to enormous films with hundreds of crew members involved. And somehow, we (mostly) manage to enter the latest superhero flick with a trove of surprises awaiting us on the other end. And as long as you're in the company of respectful moviegoers, there's an unspoken agreement that we'll all wait until the time is right to openly discuss major surprises like [REDACTED] in "Spider-Man: No Way Home."
But what exactly makes all this possible? Stories from the set of the "Hawkeye" series give us a glimpse at the process.

The Secret-Keeping Studio

Based on reports from various Marvel cast and crew members, the studio goes to great lengths to preserve its many secrets. They pretty much do everything short of tranquilizing stars, bringing them to a super-secret location for filming, and knocking them out once the day is over. As far as we know, anyway. Some of their methods are pretty pedestrian when it comes to franchise spoilers, like keeping the main team small and letting some details be on a need-to-know basis. Other more extreme methods include drafting dummy scenes, not giving actors the full script, and according to one "Eternals" star, not letting them keep their scripts. Lauren Ridloff cited a man in a trenchcoat knocking on her door at 11:00 at night with a manila envelope filled with script pages. Ya know, typical movie-making stuff.
These extreme precautions might be because the studio has gotten burned in the past, usually in the most hilarious way possible -- like Tom Holland awkwardly saying more than he should about an upcoming Spider-Man movie. Or Mark Ruffalo accidentally live streaming "Thor: Ragnorak" on Instagram. Or Tom Holland saying too much about an upcoming Avengers movie. Or Mark Ruffalo literally explaining the ending of "Infinity War" ahead of its release. But Marvel secrecy has never been reserved for these repeat offenders alone, as it seems like most cast/crew members are kept in the dark for as long as possible.
Dummy scenes and fake scripts are often used to cause confusion and keep major developments buried — sometimes making a funeral appear as a wedding or keeping a character's appearance a secret by presenting them as someone else. "Hawkeye" costumer designer Michael Crow recently revealed that he wasn't aware of Vincent D'onofrio's Kingpin return until halfway through filming the series. The "Daredevil" actor made his non-Netflix MCU debut as the Big Bad at the end of the series, so how did Crow manage to get Kingpin's floral button-up ready in time? Under a very tight deadline, apparently. Crow told Insider:
"I think in the original script it was scripted as another character. Like something from the [Matt] Fraction [Hawkeye] comic books, but not Kingpin. I started asking questions about what we wanted to do, how do we wanna approach it? And I got an immediate phone call back from Trinh Tran [Marvel Studios Producer]. And she just said: 'We'll talk about that a little bit later. We're not ready to talk about that yet, but it's not gonna be that [the character from the script]. It's a big secret.'"
After finding out about D'Onofrio's return as Wilson Fisk, Crow and his team had about two months to create his costumes and the fittings were done remotely. Crow added:
"We did a lot of long-distance fittings because [D'Onofrio} was working on another show in New York at the time. I didn't see him until the very last minute and I mean, he is truly a lovely gentleman. A pleasure to work with."
Maybe Crow should've kept his eye on Twitter, where fans were airing out conspiracy theories about the possibility of D'Onofrio's return in "Hawkeye." The Marvel star himself was adding fuel to the flames, but none of that dampened the fun of finally seeing Kingpin return to our screens. Good thing for all that secrecy, huh?

In 1991, "The Silence of the Lambs" was the third film to sweep the "Big 5" at the Academy Awards, picking up golden statues for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay. The movie holds the same honors as "It Happened One Night" in 1934 and "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" in 1974; it's not a bad feat for a movie about an FBI agent/cannibal tag team hunting down a serial killer.
Jonathan Demme's thriller has scares, creeps, and unorthodox wine pairings in its tale of young Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster), a fledgling FBI agent tasked with the capture of the killer "Buffalo Bill" (Ted Levine), so named for his penchant for skinning his women victims. Starling seeks the help of the incarcerated Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), a psychiatrist with his own m.o. that earned him the nickname "Hannibal the Cannibal." As Lecter, Anthony Hopkins accesses a monstrosity through tranquility, essaying Peter Lorre's silent villain Hans Beckert in Fritz Lang's "M" instead of a neurotic Norman Bates or an unhinged Patrick Bateman. It's an incredible performance, one that earned Hopkins a few statues and awards, but no one was more affected by his turn as Lecter than his co-star.
Speaking with Vanity Fair, Jodie Foster (who already had prestige to her name due to her 1998 Best Actress Oscar for Jonathan Kaplan's courtroom drama "The Accused") recounts her experience with Hopkins. For a good run of the film, Agent Starling and Dr. Lecter are separated by a pane of glass that makes the barrier of his cell, creating a distance that infused itself into their respective performances. It's eeriness is most apparent in the duo's first scene together, when Agent Starling meets Lecter face-to-face. Here's what Foster had to say about it:
"We met at a reading. I didn't really get a proper meet with Tony. So we're sitting across from each other, and he launches in, and we start the reading. And I was just petrified. [Laughs.] I was kind of too scared to talk to him after that."
"Play Him Nice."

Foster elaborates that she "still kept that kind of hold-your-breath feeling about the character just from that first reading." For Hopkins to turn the screw so deeply despite the lack of ferocity or physical closeness is a testament to the intensity of the performance, something that was very intentional. Hopkins explains:
"The way Ted Tally had written it—it was so indelible in my mind. [Laughs.] I don't know what it is that's in my brain—I'm fairly normal most of the time—but I know what scares people, and I believe that stillness is the key. You know, we don't look at anyone too long. We look away, or we laugh to disarm ourselves. But if you stare at someone for more than 10 seconds, it scares them. And you can do it, you can test people. I knew instinctively that I should be absolutely still. All the talk about 'He's a monster...' I thought, Well, go to the opposite. Play him nice."
And nice he does play it, whispering where others might shout and opting for delicacy over brutality. As Hans Beckert whistles Edvard Grieg "In the Hall of the Mountain King" while he prowls for child victims, so does Lecter sway to a Bach aria with a straight razor as he makes quick work of two cops. It's enough to drive any co-worker of his mad, and Starling got off fairly easy.
Let's hope the lambs have stopped screaming for Foster since then.

The Han Solo Easter Egg You May Have Missed In The Last Jedi

"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" is known for a great many things. But for the sake of avoiding arguments, let's just leave it at being the second entry in the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy that arrived following Disney's purchase of Lucasfilm. The movie had to accomplish an awful lot, picking up where director J.J. Abrams left off in the incredibly successful "The Force Awakens," which hit theaters in 2015. That movie, as fans are well aware, killed off Harrison Ford's Han Solo in devastating fashion. As such, he wasn't able to appear in director Rian Johnson's follow-up. But he was there in spirit right alongside the Resistance, as evidenced by a pretty neat Easter egg that was, to say the least, rather well-hidden.
The Easter Egg In Question

The Easter egg shows up pretty early on in "The Last Jedi," during the opening scene that sees the Resistance attempting to bomb a First Order Dreadnought out of existence. The scene is harrowing and action-packed with many moving parts It also features perhaps one of the best line readings ever in a "Star Wars" movie, with Captain Canady (Mark Lewis Jones) saying "Fire on the base!" with admirable passion and believability. So much so that it inspired this remix that is, as the kids might say, fire.
But I digress. During this sequence, Resistance ships carrying lots and lots of bombs make their way to the gigantic starcruiser in an attempt to hit it in the sweet spot. At one point, we catch a shot of these round bombs, and one has a bit of writing on it that might otherwise go unnoticed by viewers, especially since it is written in the fictional language Aurebesh, which is a commonly seen fictional text in the franchise. On one of these bombs, a message reads "Han says hi." Yes, one of the bombs that knocked out a massive asset to the First Order had a little message from Captain Solo on it.
Rian Johnson Confirmed It

An Easter egg such as this doesn't carry all that much weight unless it is confirmed as an intentional choice by the filmmaker. Without that, it could just be fans reading too much into something, as "Star Wars" fans are very much capable of doing. I say that as a fan who has read too much into things many times before, and will continue to do so in the future. In any event, this little reference was absolutely intentional, as it was confirmed by Johnson in a roundabout, tip-of-the-cap sort of way.
As we can see, a fan spotted this Easter egg and decided to bring it up on Twitter, tagging Johnson in his post. Johnson replied confirmed the validitiy of the Han Solo nod, sharing a GIF of the scruffy-looking nerf herder giving a salute.
Justice For Han

In many cases, Easter eggs are just fun little references for the eagle-eyed fans who notice them. It doesn't hurt to miss them, and the scene in "The Last Jedi" works perfectly will without knowing that "Han says hi" is written on one of the bombs. That being said, since Han wasn't able to appear in the movie, given that Kylo Ren killed him in "The Force Awakens," this one might carry a bit more emotional weight.
The fact of the matter is, no matter how much he resisted it, Han Solo was a massive part of the Rebellion and, for a time, the Resistance. He was a key player in bringing peace to the galaxy. This is, in part, why Rey is so infatuated with him when they meet in "The Force Awakens." The fact that Han couldn't be there to help Leia and the Resistance in person hurt. But his spirit was there in that battle, with the captain of the Millennium Falcon sending his regards to Snoke and the rest of the First Order. That's a different kind of justice for Han that we can totally get behind.

Why Marty's Money Laundering Technique In Ozark Doesn't Actually Work

Stop me if you've heard this story before: an ambitious criminal is forced into increasingly high stakes situations as they desperately scramble to survive an elaborate criminal enterprise that's perpetually threatening their life. Toss in some constant concern about their loved ones, a drug cartel or two, and the story gets even more specific. Is this in reference to one of the past decade's most loved series, "Breaking Bad"? Or to the groundbreaking drama that came before, "The Sopranos"? NBC's "Good Girls" also fits the bill, as does "Narcos," but I was actually thinking of another Netflix gem: "Ozark." This just goes to show that when it comes to TV criminals, audiences have plenty of options.
Between these five series and so many more, we've seen an awful lot of criminal activity on TV. With the return of "Ozark" finally on the horizon, and Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman) set to rise or fall in his final 14 episodes, it's time to break down the specifics of his Ozark-based crimes. How does Marty's money laundering operation actually work — and how close to reality is the show's portrayal?
The Crimes Of Marty Byrde

When we first meet Marty Byrde, he's a Chicago-based financial advisor with a precarious side-hustle: laundering money for the Navarro drug cartel, the second largest in Mexico. His firm is small-time but comfortable, run by Marty and his partner Bruce Liddell (Josh Randall). If not for the events that kickstart the series, Marty would have continued living a blissfully boring life in a nearly loveless marriage, but thanks to Bruce, the thrills are nonstop. It turns out Marty's partner was skimming money off the cartel's profit -- to the tune of $8 million. In response, the cartel murders him and nearly follows suit with Marty. His saving grace is the promise of paying back the cash by setting up an exponentially bigger laundering operation in Missouri's Lake of the Ozarks. And so our tale begins.
Here's how it works: the cartel makes their millions selling heroin throughout the US, then delivers their cash to Marty. His job is to clean the "dirty" money so it can't be traced back to criminal activity and won't invite unwanted attention when spent. In the fourth episode of the series, Marty breaks the conundrum down in detail, spelling out his criminal approach:
"Say you come across a suitcase with $5 million bucks in it. What would you buy? A yacht? A mansion? A sports car? Sorry, the IRS won't let you buy anything of value with it. So you better get that money into the banking system. But here's the problem — that dirty money is too clean. You have to make it look like it's been around the block. You need a cash business, something pleasant and joyful, with books that are easily manipulated. You mix the $5 million with the cash from the joyful business. That mixture goes from an American bank to a bank from any country that doesn't have to listen to the IRS. It then goes into a standard checking account... your work is done, your money is clean."
How Marty Launders Money

The age-old scheme of cleaning money can be handled in any number of ways, but the method highlighted by Marty is cash-based businesses. Relying on cash means profits aren't tracked through receipts, making it much easier to funnel in a stray thousand here and there. The real-life mafia famously used pizza parlors and donut shops. In "Breaking Bad," Walter White (Bryan Cranston) uses a Car Wash and Gustavo Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) the infamous fast-food restaurant chain, Los Pollos Hermanos. In "Ozark," Marty acquires a few different business to launder his cash, but starts off with two —the strip club Lickety Splits and the Blue Cat Lodge lakeside inn.
The Byrdes first move to the Ozarks having promised the Navarro cartel $8 million dollars laundered under a tight deadline, so getting involved with two businesses in need of renovations helps Marty speed up the process. He ultimately takes two approaches: first is physically mixing the cartel dollars in with the businesses earnings. He brings the actual cash-register earnings to the bank, along with extra from cartel drug profits and reports it all under the business' name. Second, he exaggerates the cost of renovations, paying inflated sums to cartel-controlled suppliers for imaginary products and services. This caused some confusion from "Ozark" fans on Reddit, with one user wondering:
"When Marty invests in the resort he makes it look like he bought more carpet than they needed. I get making it look like someone bought more from you to launder the money. How though is he supposed to get the clean money if all he's doing is making it look like he bought more from someone else?"
In the sixth episode, "Book of Ruth," Marty's laundering practices are discussed in detail when Rachel takes a closer look at the books for the Blue Cat Lodge. She notes that they're pristine and beautiful, but obviously "bulls***." The pages are filled with orders she knows to be false: like a purchase of four air conditioners when only one was installed. The swim dock has a price estimation that's ridiculously bloated and she says "there is enough carpeting here for the goddamn mall of America." The money for these non-existent products was paid to cartel-owned businesses, set up to look real and legitimizing the money by virtue of it being exchanged for good and services. No goods were provided, but if only Marty and the corrupt cartel-owned business knows this, then all is well. Thanks to the books, there's a paper trail justifying the amount spent and funneled through the separate business.
Another possibility is offered by another Reddit user:
"I remember reading or watching something once about crime shows where they said they often either omit details or subtly inject incorrect information. In order not to inadvertently educate people how to do it themselves so it wouldn't surprise me if there are some deliberate inaccuracies as well,"
What TV Gets Wrong About Money Laundering

It's possible that the methods "Ozark" lays out wouldn't be successful in practice — I guess you can't really know unless you try. And now for the part of the article where I'm obliged to say please don't. "Ozark" viewers are well aware of how disastrously the money laundering scheme has gone for Marty Byrde, a pretty clever financial advisor with a much better understanding of money laundering than the average person. Though we haven't actually seen the end of "Ozark" at the time I'm writing this, things aren't looking great for Marty; I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that International money laundering for illegal drug cartels is an all-around bad idea. Especially if your main source for info is a TV show.
As much as "Ozark" and "Breaking Bad" get right, there's plenty they don't account for. Beam Solutions, a company that develops software to identify and prevent money laundering, analyzed "Ozark" in a blog post, writing:
"Marty takes a struggling business and begins funneling large amounts of money through it. While the change in volume of both withdrawals and deposits could be explained by a new owner trying to shake things up, this would generate the scrutiny of the bank and would make things much more difficult for Marty... We would expect a lot of these transactions to be flagged and reported to FinCEN. If the banks in the Ozark universe were using compliance software that's even a fraction as powerful as Beam, the suspicious activity reports would be pouring in.
Though Marty's money laundering approach is deemed both plausible and creative, they note that a bank would still flag such suspicious activity. Anyway, Marty's method isn't the end-all be-all of laundering money, and apparently most illegal operators have shifted away from washing money this way. While it's great TV to watch the Walter Whites and Marty Byrdes of the world literally toss cash into a dryer, moving money quickly (in increasingly elaborate ways) is much preferred. CrimeReads has a post about how criminals prefer moving cash from one jurisdiction to another to break audit trails and create bureaucratic barriers. Money is often smuggled through bulk cargo superbags, which can transport 2,200 pounds. Big surprise — breaking the law is a lot more complicated than it seems on TV ... which is really saying something given the amount of trouble Marty tends to find himself in.
