Fortnite poisons a potentially great game with agonizing F2P limits

by Sam Machkovech

Enlarge / At its best, Fortnite looks (and feels) like this nicely staged promo pic of in-game action. However, so many free-to-play annoyances drag this "build a base, blast some zombies" potential to the unseemly depths. (credit: Epic Games)

Fortnite comes very close to standing out from the crowded online-shooter fray. Some video games let you hunker down with friends and shoot a zillion oncoming zombies. Other games let you build a giant, personalized fortress. What if a single game let you do both—and made the fort-building stuff a cinch? (Basically, a particularly smooth gaming combo of peanut butter and chocolate.)

To test that attractive sales pitch, I have racked up about a week of on-and-off Fortnite testing, spread over the two weeks since the game launched in a peculiar "paid early access" manner. With that much time, I've confirmed that Fortnite includes a darned good synergy of those game ideas, backed by robust game mechanics, incredible art design, and a base-building system that really finds a good balance between simplicity and depth.

Trouble is, I've also struggled to have fun with the results thus far. While Epic has declared that this is an "early access" game for the foreseeable future, whose elements are subject to change, I'm concerned that Fortnite's root issue can't be so easily patched: the poisonous real-money economics stirred into the gameplay pot.

Devin Nunes is even lying about the reason he's stepping aside

by rss@dailykos.com (Mark Sumner)

The words “tangled web” might have been coined to describe the mixture of contradictory claims, vague statements, unrelated issues, and plain old lies that have defined Devin Nunes’ public appearances over the last month. That was true even before he jumped from a car, paid a secret visit to the White House, and held a late night confab White House officials about the best way to derail the intelligence committee’s Russia investigation.

In his snarly statement on Thursday morning, Nunes opened with a claim about why he was giving up his role as the biggest roadblock to making progress in the investigation.

“Several left-wing activist groups have filed accusations against me with the Office of Congressional Ethics.”

Yeah. About that. The Office of Congressional Ethics, which Republicans attempted to eliminate earlier in the year, does accept complaints from outside groups—and some have certainly been filed about Nunes’ actions. But what Nunes is actually facing is an 18(a) investigation by the House Ethics Committee. That committee doesn’t listen to outside groups, left wing or otherwise. They deal with issues raised by other members of Congress. For Nunes to be under investigation by this committee, at least one Republican member of the committee had to agree there was an issue.

The reason that Nunes is being investigated is because of what he did twice during the day following his nighttime skulk about the White House—hold press conferences.

… he is under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for allegedly disclosing intelligence without proper authorization.

Devin Nunes is under investigation for leaking classified information. That’s what his bye-bye note fails to mention.

Voting problems? Investigators are on the case all day at Electionland

by rss@dailykos.com (lizbirge)

Election Day is just a few hours old and already there are problems with the breakdown of voting machines and the publication of false information, the most recent in a  form of a tweet from Urban Outfitters that was filled with inaccuracies.

Keeping track of these issues on Tuesday is Electionland, a project of ProPublica, Google Labs, 250 news organizations and 12 journalism schools. In all, more than 1,000 journalists across the country are participating in the hope that by reporting on the issues in real time, they can be corrected during voting hours.

"This is the first election where we have the technology to really be able to do this," says Jessica Huseman, a senior reporting fellow with ProPublica, a non-profit investigative journalism outfit.

Thus far Electionland has reported that in addition to the Urban Outfitters tweet:

... we’re seeing reports from all over the country about broken machines and scanners causing long voting lines. So far, we’ve seen the most reports in New York, Illinois, North Carolina, Kentucky, Texas and Ohio.

Broken machines are not unusual in elections as many of the mechanical ones are aging. With broken scanners:

David Becker, the Executive Director and Co-Founder of the Center for Election Innovation & Research, says that every precinct should have a secure box to deposit ballots that can be scanned later if a machine is broken. “This should not slow anything down in these places,” he said.

Voters who experience any difficulty voting or wish to let journalists know about their voting experience can let Electionland know by submitting a form online or texting 69866.

History is calling for volunteers: No matter where you live, sign up with MoveOn to make calls to swing state voters from home and help make Hillary Clinton the first woman elected president of the United States.
