Newswire: Comedians honor Garry Shandling in memorial service

by Dennis DiClaudio
Rachel

Damnit, he died too. This year needs to CHILL.

Nearly five-hundred friends, colleagues and admirers of Garry Shandling gathered at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles last night to pay tribute to the life and work of the comedian, who died of a heart attack last month. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the memorial service was produced and hosted by filmmaker Judd Apatow, whose career Shandling helped nurture several decades ago with several key opportunities, including a writer-producer job on The Larry Sanders show in 1993. “I don’t know how I am going to do this. I’m sorry in advance,” a visibly emotional Apatow told the crowd of comedians and industry insiders. “Why are we so upset about Garry? Because he opened up to us. He revealed his truth, his pain, his struggle, his fight to lead an ego-less life ... He worked so hard to become the man that he became and an amazing friend to ...

Bowie vs. Prince Bike Event to be Retired After This Year

Every year since 2008, cyclists in Portland, Oregon, have taken part in a ride called Bowie vs. Prince. They sign up for either Team Bowie or Team Prince, and then dress like them for the ride. Founder Lillian Karabaic had considered changing the event in the wake of Bowie’s death.

"Me and my co-leader, with Bowie's death this year, were considering making the ride Bowie vs. Bowie," said Karabaic. "We felt like a lot of people wouldn't want to be Prince in light of it. I guess for better or worse, it's now going to be Bowie vs. Prince again."

Karabaic was thinking about ending the annual ride even before the stars' deaths. She's hoping some other event can take its place next year, but thinks it's fitting this year's bike ride will be the last.

"Bowie vs. Prince is going to be a totally different type of ride this year," she said. "It's going to be a memorial ride."

Somehow, I think that this year’s event may be the biggest of all, even if it is the last one. -via Uproxx

Michelle McNamara, Noted Crime Writer and Wife of Patton Oswalt, Dead at 46

by Devon Ivie
Rachel

I love Patton Oswalt. This is just so sad. :(

Michelle McNamara, crime writer and founder of the website True Crime Diary, died in her sleep on Thursday at the age of 46. The news was confirmed by the publicist of her husband, comedian and actor Patton Oswalt. The cause has yet to be determined, though the publicist noted her passing was "a complete shock to her family and friends, who loved her dearly."

A graduate from the University of Notre Dame, McNamara also received a master's degree in creative writing from the University of Minnesota. As the founder of True Crime Diary — which was created when she "decided the investigating she was doing on unsolved crimes to satisfy her own curiosity might be better shared" — she specialized in covering cold cases and breaking stories from previously overlooked angles. Throughout the website's long history, she wrote about cases that ranged from the high-profile Golden State Killer to numerous John and Jane Does.

Along with Oswalt, she is survived by her 7-year old daughter, Alice.

More American Gods cast members announced as production begins

Starz and FremantleMedia North America (FMNA) began production this week on the 10-episode first season of American Gods, the adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed contemporary fantasy novel. Shooting has commenced in Toronto, Canada and will continue in additional locations across America.

The cast includes Ricky Whittle (The 100) as Shadow Moon, Ian McShane (Deadwood) as Mr. Wednesday, Emily Browning (Sucker Punch) as Laura Moon, Sean Harris (The Borgias) as Mad Sweeney, Yetide Badaki (Aquarius) as Bilquis, Bruce Langley (Deadly Waters) as Technical Boy, Crispin Glover (Back to the Future) as Mr World, and Jonathan Tucker (Kingdom) as Low Key Lyesmith.

Joining the previously announced cast are Cloris Leachman (Malcom in The MiddleRaising Hope), Peter Stormare (FargoPrison Break), Chris Obi (Snow White and the HuntsmanThe Counselor), and Mousa Kraish (SuperbadFast & Furious).

Leachman plays Zorya Vechernyaya, the eldest of three sisters who watch over the constellations, guarding against horrors forgotten by modern man. Once accustomed to royal status, the sisters have learned to survive on far less in a country that has no memory of them.

Stormare plays Czernobog. A Slavic god of darkness and evil, Czernobog is reluctant to join the coming war, wary of Wednesday’s motivations.

Obi plays Anubis, the commanding ancient Egyptian god of the dead, gently guiding mortals through the judgment of their souls.

Kraish will play The Jinn, a mythical creature of the fire who understands a person’s deepest desires better than they do. He fears for his safety with the coming war, and considers fleeing America.

The plot of American Gods posits a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs. Its protagonist, Shadow Moon, is an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday, a conman but in reality one of the older gods, on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation to battle the new deities.

American Gods is produced by FremantleMedia North America. Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, Pushing Daisies) and Michael Green (The RiverKings) serve as writers and showrunners. David Slade (Hannibal30 Days of Night) is directing the pilot and additional episodes. FMNA’s Craig Cegielski and Stefanie Berk are executive producing the series along with Fuller, Green, Slade and Neil Gaiman.

Your brain’s reaction to celeb pics may create the most secure form of ID

You guys would totally be able to crack my security system.

While your brain on drugs may be analogous to a fried egg, your brain on Instagram may be like a super-secure form of identification, researchers report in a new study. Fingerprints are so twentieth century. The authors envision future security systems that authenticate or grant access by monitoring a user’s brain while looking at random pictures, such as snapshots of Anne Hathaway or a slice of pizza.

According to the researchers, our brains create unique patterns of neural activity in the first few milliseconds during which we process and react to certain pictures, including images of food, celebrities, and infrequently used words. When the researchers collected and analyzed such patterns from 50 adult participants, ranging in ages from 18 to 43, they were able to create unique brain-based passcodes that identified individuals with 100-percent accuracy and, so far, seem impossible to duplicate.

Study coauthor Sarah Laszlo, a neuroscientist at Binghamton University in New York, told Ars:

Fran Kranz Joins The Dark Tower

by Silas Lesnick
Rachel

I'm going to have to re-read. "the film's female lead, Tirana"...!?!??! What' about Suzanna???

Fran Kranz will play Pimli in The Dark Tower.

The Cabin in the Woods star Fran Kranz will play Pimli in The Dark Tower

Fran Kranz is going from The Cabin in the Woods to The Dark Tower. The Dollhouse star has signed on to play a character by the name of Pimli in Sony Pictures‘ now-filming Stephen King adaptation. This is likely to be a variation on the book’s Pimli Prentiss, although the movie’s version is described by The Hollywood Reporter as being “the right hand man of the Man in Black.”

Fran Kranz joins a cast that includes Idris Elba as Roland Deschain (The Gunslinger), Matthew McConaughey as Randall Flag (The Man in Black), Abbey Lee as the film’s female lead, Tirana, and Tom Taylor as young Jake Chambers.

Director Nikolaj Arcel, who co-wrote the Swedish version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and directed the Academy Award-nominated A Royal Affair, is set to helm the big screen adaptation, set up through Sony Pictures and MRC. Academy Award winner Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind) and Jeff Pinkner (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) have written the screenplay, which is said to be based primarily on the first book in the seven-volume series. There’s also a tie-in television series in development simultaneously.

Ron Howard was initially planning to direct the first film in the series. He is now involved in producing the series through his Imagine Entertainment alongside Brian Grazer and Erica Huggins. Goldsman is also producing through Weed Road with Pinkner set to serve as executive producer.

Fran Kranz can soon be seen headlining Netflix‘s original feature film, Rebirth.

The Dark Tower is currently set for release on January 13, 2017.

What do you think of Fran Kranz as Pimli? How do you think this version of the character will play out? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

I'd never survive on a desert island. Between taro root and coconut water, ugh.

I've walked past this funny-looking tuberous vegetable more times than I can count when I shop at my local Whole Foods. Maybe you have too? Or perhaps you've spotted it listed on a menu somewhere, or while strolling through an Asian grocery store. Or maybe you've been eating this purple-tinged root since day one. We'll count you as one of the lucky ones. For the rest of us, it's time we figure out what taro is and what we should do with it.

Newswire: Three’s Company movie reboot is knocking on your door, waiting for you

by Sam Barsanti
Rachel

NO.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, New Line has announced that it’s planning to take advantage of the renewed interest in movies based on old TV shows by developing a big-screen reboot of the classic ’70s and ’80s sitcom Three’s Company. Interestingly, this isn’t one of those situations where New Line was just sitting on the Three’s Company license and figured it should make some money off of it, as THR says it’s just now in negotiations to pick up the rights. That means the studio actively wants to make a Three’s Company movie for presumably artistic reasons, not just because it’s a thing to do.

The original Three’s Company show starred John Ritter as a man pretending to be gay so he could live with two female roommates, initially played by Joyce DeWitt and Suzanne Somers. THR says New Line is planning ...

Newswire: Castle fans mourn the demise of #Caskett as Stana Katic exits series

by Marah Eakin
Rachel

???

Castle is losing its non-titular lead. The ABC series has announced it’ll move forward without Stana Katic, the actress who plays Castle’s wife and muse Kate Beckett. Though the series hasn’t been picked up for a ninth season yet, both Katic and longtime regular Tamala Jones (“Coroner Lanie Parish”) have been preemptively excluded from any production that might occur.

Though ABC issued a statement saying it’s “grateful for Stana Katic’s talent and dedication to the series,” rumors are running rampant about why the move was made. TVLine is speculating that it’s “an apparent means to cut costs,” while The Hollywood Reporter cites sources that say Katic and the show’s star, Nathan Fillion, had “repeated clashes” leading to the actress feeling “unhappy on the series.” THR says the arguments are also responsible for Castle and Beckett’s frequent on-screen splits this season, something the ...

Portraits Of People After They've Had A Glass Or Three Of Wine

by Zeon Santos
Rachel

I'd be a much cooler person if I had two glasses of wine in me at all times.

Have you ever looked at yourself in the mirror when you're buzzed or totally blotto and thought “gee, my face looks kinda funny right now!”

You may have dismissed this change in appearance as merely the product of inebriation, but this photo series by Marcos Alberti shows us that drinking actually makes our faces more fun.

That's because the alcohol in our favorite alcoholic beverages (in this case wine) takes away our inhibitions and allows us to stretch our faces into super silly expressions, thereby eliciting laughs.

It's all really scientific and related to chemistry and biology and endorphins and such, but this is all you really need to take away from Marcos Alberti's photo series- three glasses of wine is enough to loosen anyone up!

Teen OTP Madness: The Champion

by Posh Deluxe
Rachel

I forgot to vote! Aw, I still like Logan and Veronica tho

Teen OTP Madness: The Champion

Teen OTP Madness began with 64 couples. But after weeks of raging hormones, swooning swoons and shipping ships, only one couple remains.

Ladies and Brian, we present your Teen OTP Madness Champions: Veronica & Logan.

LoVe beat out Anne/Gilbert (Gilanne? Ganne? Anbert?) by a mere 13 votes, leaving some of us in the depths of despair. But given the results of Teen TV Madness, this is way less surprising than the time Anne's hair turned green from a bad dye job.

The winning duo in our Non-Canon Deathmatch is slighty more shocking. Because according to your votes*, where Rory leads, Paris will follow, if you know whaddamean.

*This prep school pair beat out Harry/Hermione by only two votes! That's some serious magic.

Now let's take a look at the final ranking for our bracket challenge competitors:

Rank 1: Stephanie J
Rank 2: Moja
Rank 3: Susan T., Carlee M.
Rank 4: Amy G.
Rank 5: Jaime

Congrats to Stephanie J for being psychic a very calculated guesser! You win a shirt of your choosing from the FYA Store for your serious bracket skills.

And now I'll give myself a pat on the back (and a glass of champers) for heading up the FYA Leaderboard!

1. Posh
2. Mandy W. and Mandy C.
3. Amanda K.
4. Alexis
5. Jennie
6. Rosemary
7. Amanda R.
8. Lee

Thanks to all of y'all for making this year's March Madness insanely stressful a total blast. After we take some time to recover, we'll start brainstorming our theme for next year, so if you've got any ideas, hit us up in the comments. Until then:

Ten of the Most Memorable Clowns in Movies

by Miss Cellania
Rachel

The clown statue in Pee Wee's Big Adventure is scarier than Krusty...

The world has finally gotten around to admitting that clowns are pretty much horrible. For centuries, we just pretended otherwise, not knowing that other people felt the same way. But now clowns are a fairly common horror trope, and there have been plenty of movies with clowns as the scary part. I posted a picture of the first one you’d probably think of.

Pennywise is the scariest clown ever, and he’s the first that came to mind when I decided to create this list. In the TV miniseries It (which I think we can count as a movie), Pennywise the Dancing Clown was played by the very creepy Tim Curry. The clown is just one of “Its” forms, complete with long claws and fangs. Truly terrifying for children.

But there are plenty of other clowns in movies you might have forgotten, but you’ll be reminded by this extensive list at TVOM.

Newswire: Jackie Earle Haley joins The Tick and The Dark Tower

by Sam Barsanti
Rachel

I don't remember this character, but I don't want to reread the series...stupid brain.

Professional bad guy Jackie Earle Haley has signed on for a pair of notable villain roles in two high-profile, geek-friendly projects. According to Deadline, Haley has been cast as The Terror in Amazon’s reboot of The Tick, a character that is described as the show’s “epitome of the criminal mastermind” and a villain whose “will power and tenacity have powered an underworld syndicate for decades.” All of that is to say that there’s a very good chance we’ll see him get beat up by Peter Serafinowicz’s Tick, which will be a lot of fun for everyone involved.

Haley’s other new villain role is going to require some explanation, though. According to that same Deadline report, Haley will be playing an evil vampire named Sayre in director Nikolaj Arcel’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower. This is a bit unusual, because the ...

Newswire: Television Without Pity has new owners and a relaunch in the works

by Danette Chavez
Rachel

They need to get the backlog of forums...I have 10 seasons of SPN to read.

“Spare the snark, spoil the network” is an adage we worried would be lost to the sands of time and season premieres after Television Without Pity was shut down in 2014 by NBCUniversal. But recent rumblings have given fans of weecaps reason to hope for a return of the pop-culture publication. The site, which was shuttered two years ago, was recently updated with a new copyright date (2015) and owner, Tribune Media. The A.V. Club reached out to the media conglomerate about this cryptic activity, and received a heartening response. Josh Cogwell, Chief Product Officer for Tribune Media, confirms a relaunch is officially in the works:

“Television Without Pity was once one of the best destinations for TV commentary. An overwhelming number of fans—including us—were saddened that it shut down. So we bought it and are now working with some of the industry’s favorite talent, influencers ...

Loch Ness Monster Turns Out To Be Loch Ness Monster Prop From Classic Loch Ness Monster Film

by Stubby the Rocket

Nessie attempts to murder Dr. Watson in "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes"

Remember the time Nessie met Sherlock Holmes? In Billy Wilder’s 1970 film, The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, the detective travels to the wilds of Scotland to investigate a mystery, and comes face to face with Scotland’s greatest icon. Since the real Nessie is notoriously camera-shy, the filmmakers constructed a 30ft-long Loch Ness Monster, towed it out into the loch…and watched in dismay as it sank. But now, thanks to modern technology, we’ve found Nessie!

The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes featured Sir Robert Stephens as Holmes, Colin Blakely as Dr. Watson and Sir Christopher Lee (!!!) as Mycroft (!!!) in a much more adult adventure that contrasted the “real” Holmes with the image Watson creates through his stories. Since the story actually features Nessie prominently, a prop needed to be made, and special effects artist Wally Veevers (who also worked on 2001: A Space Odyssey and Superman) created a large Nessie model. But the size and heaviness of the prop spelled its doom. According to the BBC:

The model was built with a neck and two humps and taken alongside a pier for filming of portions of the film in 1969. The director did not want the humps and asked that they be removed, despite warnings I suspect from the rest of the production that this would affect its buoyancy. And the inevitable happened. The model sank.”

And so Nessie remained at the bottom of Loch Ness (possibly confusing the real Nessie) in a lonely maritime afterlife, until a new effort was made to survey the depths of the loch. Kongsberg Maritime, a Norwegian company, has partnered with VisitScotland and Loch Ness Project head Adrian Shine, to use sonar imaging to create maps of the loch, and turned up this image:

Loch Ness Monster Prop

This is almost certainly the prop… but if it suddenly swims away and turns out to be the real Nessie, we’ll let you know.

Why Sleepy Hollow Just Lost Any Faith Fans Had Left in It

by Nichole Perkins
Rachel

Wow.

SLEEPY HOLLOW: L-R: Tom Mison and Nicole Beharie in theÒRagnarokÓ season finale episode of SLEEPY HOLLOW airing Friday, April 8 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. ©2016 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: Tina Rowden/FOX

Major spoilers ahead for the season-three finale of Sleepy Hollow.

The first season of Sleepy Hollow was charming, fun, and special. It took a familiar story from American literature and gave it a fantastical twist, complete with one of the most diverse casts on air. The chemistry between the two leads, Nicole Beharie and Tom Mison as Abbie Mills and Ichabod Crane, was remarkable and undeniable. Then season two happened. Everything that attracted fans to the show was dismantled in a series of perplexing creative choices. And now, at the conclusion of season three, Abbie was killed off in one of the most unsatisfactory goodbyes in recent memory, sending fans reeling.

During Friday night’s season finale, fans added the hashtag #RenewSleepyHollow to their tweets, as the show has not yet been picked up for a fourth season. But when it became clear Abbie was dead and Beharie was no longer returning to the show, they quickly changed their tune and began tweeting #CancelSleepyHollow. Jose Molina, former producer and writer for Sleepy Hollow, posted a tone-deaf tweet, writing that sometimes characters die because they are characters, not because they are minorities.

According to IMDB, Molina hasn’t been associated with the show since its first season and in his tweets he notes he had to read about what happened, indicating a lack of awareness. There is more to Abbie’s loss than an oversimplified cry of racism because Beharie is African-American. There have been continued slights against her and the characters of color on Sleepy Hollow, and Abbie’s death was the last straw for fans of the show, particularly as other TV shows, like The 100, Empire, and The Walking Dead, have killed off POC and/or LGBT fan-favorite characters recently.

It all started in Sleepy Hollow’s second season, which was widely viewed as a mess. The show changed course by killing off two characters and hiring a new showrunner. The diverse cast that originally drew considerable praise and viewership practically disappeared. Supporting characters played by John Cho and Nicholas Gonzalez left. Abbie’s sister and police captain, played by Lyndie Greenwood and Orlando Jones, respectively, had their airtime drastically reduced, and eventually Jones was not asked to return for season three.

His absence was particularly hard to take because he was the main star interacting with fans via social media. He constantly live-tweeted and encouraged them via Tumblr and frequently showcased fan art and fiction about the show. Jones was the most socially engaged of all the cast, and his departure left many fans upset.

But the most unforgivable misstep of season two was its treatment of Abbie Mills, who, to reiterate, was one of two leads. She was sidelined while Crane focused on his wife, Katrina (Katia Winter), and devil son, Henry Parrish (John Noble). (Also egregious: supposedly a powerful witch, Katrina was repeatedly put in peril, frequently making her the damsel-in-distress character.) The show’s audience couldn’t help but notice that the people of color on the cast, one of its main draws for many viewers, had been drastically reduced while the white characters received more airtime. Then the show added another white character, Nick Hawley (Matt Barr), an old flame of Jenny’s who developed feelings for Abbie. Not only was Abbie reduced to playing sidekick as Crane saved Katrina over and over, but the idea that Abbie could have a potential love interest with her sister’s ex was, frankly, insulting. The show didn’t pursue that idea any further but the damage had been done. (The fact that Abbie never had a legitimate love interest is a whole other can of worms.) Much of the audience no longer trusted the show and began to voice their disapproval, most notably with the Twitter hashtag #AbbieMillsDeservesBetter.

Sleepy Hollow’s viewership suffered, and it remained on the bubble for renewal. Eventually, FOX confirmed a third season, and at first it seemed like the executives had heard and understood audience complaints. Katrina, Henry, and Nick were removed from the show. Jones’ Captain Irving was gone, but not dead, so there was still lingering hope he could come back. Then Beharie posted a since-deleted picture to her Instagram account, noting that she had not been invited to participate in season-two DVD commentary, raising suspicion about how she was being treated on the show. Friends and fans rallied around her.

For season three, Fox moved the show to Fridays, most likely because Friday night ratings numbers have more leniency when it comes time for renewal. And while fans did slowly return, they saw the move as a way of continuing to sabotage the show. Throughout the season, Abbie and Crane remained separated too often, and in the midseason finale, Abbie was trapped alone in mystical catacombs. Even after her rescue, the two frequently worked apart, perhaps to give airtime to the five new series regulars, including two people of color.

It turns out that padding the show with additional cast members was an attempt to prepare for Beharie’s departure. Rumors about Beharie’s unhappiness with the show, and her desire to be released from her contract, abound, and who could blame her? She was sidelined on a show where she served as co-lead, her character was underdeveloped in stark contrast to others, and recently had to ask the show’s official Twitter account to follow her. It was clear the show underestimated Beharie’s worth, and it suffered for it.

By far the biggest issue this season was the show’s clumsy handling of the relationship between Abbie and Crane. In order to reel fans back in after the disastrous second season, Sleepy Hollow finally began acknowledging that the love between the two could be something more than friendship. Characters began urging Crane to come clean about his feelings for Abbie. Crane prepared a candlelit Italian dinner for her. He made her a cappuccino with his face in the foam! Within minutes of finding Betsy Ross in the present day, she told him his heart belonged to Abbie; even a dying Pandora whispered to Crane that he loved Abbie. And yet, Abbie and Crane never went there. Showrunner Clifton Campbell claimed the love the two shared went beyond the physical and was a testament to the friendship men and women can share. But his statement rings false given how the show has repeatedly hinted at a romance between the two. In the end, they at the very least could’ve done more than had Crane kiss Abbie’s hand in their final farewell.

Sleepy Hollow was such a fun show, and it’s been painful to see it falter time and again, particularly with how terribly it managed Nicole Beharie’s character. Beharie brought Abbie Mills alive with wit, courage, humor, and loyalty. Her instant chemistry with co-star Tom Mison was irresistible, both onscreen and during interviews, and it would be great to see them paired up again on some other project. As for Sleepy Hollow, it’s unclear if the show will go on. But even if it were to return, with Abbie gone, there’s not much reason to tune in.

Joel McHale Donates North Carolina Show Proceeds to Durham LGBTQ Center

by Jackson McHenry
Rachel

I think this is a better response than cancelling things...There are people that live in these states that can't help it.

Glashutte Original Celebrates The Launch Of Manufactory Book

Joel McHale, who is a nice guy and former host of The Soup and not an asshole lawyer scheming his way through community college, did a good thing that was representative of his character — and not a total change of heart structured to fit a three-act sitcom — by donating all of the proceeds from his show at the Durham Performing Arts Center in North Carolina to the Durham LGBTQ Center. McHale did so in response to North Carolina's recent passage of the Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act, which requires transgender people to use bathrooms for their "biological" sex as designated on their birth certificates. Bruce Springsteen recently canceled a North Carolina performance in defiance of the same act. McHale — who, let us stress, is not Jeff Winger, and was not enacting a convoluted homage to a 1980s TV show — wore a shirt emblazoned with the letters "LBGTQ" during his set and poked fun at the state's backward policies. If this were an episode of Community — and, let us be clear, it isn't — this where this music would start to play.

Watch part of McHale's set below.

For Our Consideration: Supernatural found new life by killing bad habits

by Alex McCown
Rachel

This.

Supernatural, the long-running CW show (formerly on the WB, that’s how old it is), was intended as a five-years-only affair. As it approached the half-decade mark back in 2009, creator and showrunner Eric Kripke insisted he was done: “Despite what the network and studio may or may not want, I don’t have more than five seasons of story,” he told Entertainment Weekly at the time. Star Jensen Ackles sounded equally skeptical about the possibility of continuing the adventures of Sam and Dean Winchester, monster-fighting brothers. “They’d have to back up a Brink’s truck,” he said. “We don’t live at home. We don’t sleep in our own beds. Our families aren’t here. Our friends aren’t here. Our girlfriends aren’t here.”

Apparently, The CW delivered that Brink’s truck, because Ackles and costar Jared Padalecki re-upped for another couple of seasons, which then ...

What Will the Last Four Words of Gilmore Girls Be?

by Nate Jones,Vulture Editors
Rachel

Oy with the poodles already!!! Yes! (I don't care if it's 5..this needs to be repeated)

This post originally ran on April 1, 2016. We are re-running it in advance of the new season of Gilmore Girls.

In Gilmore Girls lore, four pivotal words loom large: During the show's original run, creator Amy Sherman-Palladino was fond of saying she knew how the series was going to end. Unfortunately, she left the show before its final season and never got to see her plans to fruition — which meant, she told the press, no one would ever know the show's last four words she'd had planned all along. But earlier this year, Yanic Truesdale confirmed that the show will end with those four words after all when it returns for a four-episode season this Friday on Netflix. What will those four words be? We've put our adorably banged heads together and come up with our best guesses.

"Goodbye, Lorelai." "Goodbye, Rory."

"Actually, I hate coffee."

"I love you, Luke." (But it's Rory saying it!!!)

"Stars Hollow doesn't exist."

"Lorelai Gilmore Sherman Palladino."

"Oy with poodles already."

"New neighbors, the Bravermans."

"Bush did nine eleven."

"And me, Carole King."

"I want a divorce."

"Do you like memes?"

"Babette's your real mom."

"New job today, Kirk?"

"Love you." "I know."

Newswire: FXX renews It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia for two more seasons

by Danette Chavez
Rachel

Isn't it everyone's dream to hang out with your friends, be creative, and get paid for it?

It’s time to boil up some milksteaks or throw on your dick towels, because FXX has just renewed It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia for two more seasons. For those counting along at home, this will make for a 13th and 14th season of the increasingly deranged adventures of the Paddy’s gang. The press release notes that with the 14th season, the show will “tie with The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet as the longest-running live-action comedy series in television history,” though we doubt the Nelsons ever engaged in anything like Chardee MacDennis. This very welcome news doesn’t come as much of a surprise, as It’s Always Sunny is FXX’s strongest-performing scripted comedy, steadily increasing its viewership with each season. The network will raise a glass to our favorite worst bartenders at a PaleyLive event tonight that will feature “a panel discussion with the cast ...

rayures cowl

by a friend to knit with
Rachel

Love this. I'm knitting a very similar cowl. I am inspired to finish it now!

I find one of the most amazing gifts is a hand knit item.  Truly.
Especially if you are a knitter on the receiving end.
This beauty came in the mail from my sweet friend, Kristyn.
I was completely speechless when I opened the box.
Are you kidding?  Kristyn spent all of that time knitting for me?  And she included all of the stash in case I wanted to make a pair of  T O A S T.
My heart is completly and utterly full.  It truly might pop.
 I absolutley adore this cowl.
It will be worn all spring.  And then again.  And again.  And again.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart,  sweet friend.

Making a Murderer’s Dean Strang Is Getting His Own TV Show

swoon.

2016 American Justice Summit

Ah, yes, that traditional path to fame: from being a little known criminal defense lawyer, to becoming a key subject in a Netflix docuseries, object of the Internet's passions, and finally, the host of a TV show. Making a Murderer's Dean Strang, the lead defense attorney for Steven Avery, is going to host Dean Strange: The Road to Justice. The eight-part series, which is currently in search of a network, will focus on cases that demonstrate flaws in the legal justice system. The show's style, according to Deadline, will be "similar to Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown." In which case, you can also look forward to a one-season network sitcom where the role of Strang is played by Bradley Cooper.

Teen OTP Madness: U.S.S. Romance, Elite Eight

Teen OTP Madness: U.S.S. Romance, Elite Eight

After three fierce weeks of competition, U.S.S. Romance is down to two couples! Here's one final look at the bracket:

This week's theme takes us into the wonderful (?) world of fan fiction! I've only very briefly dabbled in fan fiction myself (Tween Me wrote a few stories and had PLANS for more that were never actualized), so I narrowed my search to the highest rated and read fanfic. And for my personal preferences, I kept the word counts low, simply because I don't have the patience time for lengthier works, and the content relatively PG, since I quickly realized that I didn't want to read about a beloved ship from my youth going to pound town. (Presumably, I'd feel the same about the even more wholesome Anne and Gilbert, had I had the same attachment to them.)

(4) Anne/Gilbert (Anne of Green Gables) vs. (2) Rory/Jess (Gilmore Girls)

In Dani's "Once Upon a Winter's Night", Anne gets caught in a snow storm on her way home from school, and who should she run into but one Gilbert Blythe?

"This doesn't change anything, you know," she said in a tone that was trying to be angry, but sounded almost sad.

Gilbert let out a breath that was very nearly a sigh. When he answered, he sounded defeated.

"It never does."

Lirazel's "Commas and Ampersands" approaches fanfic a little differently, chronicling Rory and Jess' relationship up to the end of Season 3 rather than inventing a brand new chapter.

But still, if she believes in destiny at all (and she isn’t sure that she does), she would believe that the notes in the margins of a book, a kiss at a wedding, an afternoon on the bridge with a basket in between, an apple appearing from thin air, a record store in New York, and a sprinkler system were all conspiring against her and adding up to something like fate.

Anne/Gilbert or Rory/Jess?

Polls close this Saturday at midnight Central, with results posted on Sunday.
