For Heart and Brain Health, Eat More Capers

by Art Jahnke

Chicken piccata is good for you, at least if it’s covered with enough capers. That’s the take home lesson from the University of California’s Irvine School of Medicine, where researchers have discovered that a compound named quercetin, commonly consumed when eating capers, can regulate proteins required for bodily processes such as the heartbeat, thought, muscular contraction, and normal functioning of the thyroid, pancreas and gastrointestinal tract. The UCI School of Medicine reports that the study revealed that quercetin modulates the KCNQ channels by directly regulating how they sense electrical activity in the cell, suggesting a previously unexpected mechanism for the therapeutic properties of capers.  The mechanism may extend to other quercetin-rich foods in our diet, and quercetin-based nutritional supplements.

Searching for well-worn flannel shirts, old vinyl records or handmade duct-tape wallets?

Report directly to the Punk Rock Flea Market this weekend, May 18-19.

Now spanning two days, the R5 Productions-organized market includes more than 500 private and commercial vendors peddling any sort of flea-market find imaginable — everything from old record collections and funky recycled clothing to lovely handmade jewelry and local art and ephemera. Plus, the market always includes tasty food and baked goods.

Baked Goods and Snacks: For folks showing up hungry, don’t miss the homemade whoopie pies by Makin’ Whoopie Kitchen, local jerky by Righteous Felon Jerky Cartel, Nirvana chipotle hot sauce and vegan and non-vegan cupcakes, cookies and caramel apples by Bearded Lady Baking.

Local Art: Look for locally made artworks like mixed-media pieces and prints by Black Ink Art; giclee canvas prints by Cheeseboy Products; graphic arts by Bucks County-based Skuds McKinley and Daniel Elisii; digital maps by Angela Minster; pen-and-ink illustrations by Martin Maaskant; graffiti-inspired pieces by LA Norma Art; and ceramics by South Philly’s Bolt Pottery, Threet Ceramics and Chase Brown Art.

Jewelry, Clothing and Accessories: Scores of vendors are set to deal handmade and vintage clothing, jewelry and accessories (think Etsy in person). Seek out vintage clothing, antiques and home decor from Hoof & Antler, Recycled Lovers and Vintage Junk Inc.; duct tape wallets, purses, bracelets, belts and handbags by Just Ducky Designs; Lego block pieces by Her Game Jewelry; charms made with vintage textiles by A Charming World; beaded works for Dr. Who lovers by Strange Girl Jewelry; handcarved wood earrings and more by Matt’s Crazy Jewelry; and jewelry out of credit cards by Serious Business.

Graphic Ts and More: Local lines of T-shirts and apparel will be onsite, too. Check out locally inspired graphic T-shirts by Wear Liberty; sometimes-cynical graphic goods by Hostile City Designs; geeky artwork and T-shirts by Geek Boy Press; funny graphic Ts by The Captain’s Vintage, artist-design T-shirts and more by The Machine Shop; and hand-dyed upcycled vintage by The Revival Clothing.

Home Accessories: Those looking for home goods will be in luck, too. Find handmade terrariums by Sticks and Stones Terrariums, applique pillows with some Philadelphia themes by Slater Interiors and cast concrete planters by Dachshund in the Desert.

Plus, some brick-and-mortar shops take the chance to showcase wares in a market setting. Shop stalls from Philly AIDS Thrift, New York’s Jammyland records, mobile pop-up vintage store Wild Hunt Vintage and independent Swathmore boutique Compendium.

And that’s only a select number of the hundreds of vendors market attendees will find this weekend. Note that not all vendors will be selling both Saturday and Sunday, but with so many options we doubt market goers will go home empty handed.

The $3 donation grants access for both Saturday and Sunday, plus admission to the adjacent record fair across the street at Starlight Ballroom.
