Natsume Ono and Rensuke Oshikiri Drawing Exchange

by Khursten Santos
Natsume Ono and Rensuke Oshikiri Drawing Exchange

Comic Natalie releases another set of videos in their features section, Power Push. This time they tasked Natsume Ono and Rensuke Oshikiri to draw some illustrations of each other’s characters and wow… well… it’s always nice to see you favourite artists at work?

Well there’s the fact that Ono draws on this large tablet. Not sure if that’s a CINTIQ but wow. That’s just… Imagine if she drew her BL with that! So large and up close.

Either way, it was such an interesting exchange. Watching the videos also made them think how they thought so much of each other’s characters and how, for Oshikiri particularly, it was hard to capture the handsome and erotic appeal of Ono’s style, while Ono found it difficult to draw a girl. But both tried hard and did well, I think. The two seem to have a large appreciation for each other’s works, with Ono as a fan of Oshikiri’s High Score Girl and Oshikiri challenged by Ono’s style.

The challenge’s in promotion of Ono’s upcoming release for her Big Gan Gan comic, Acca. A new volume of High School Girl is coming out soon as well. I haven’t read Acca yet, so I’m looking forward to that book coming way.

You can also download wallpapers of their exchange in the Natalie page!

Forget sight-seeing. Why not organize your next trip by mythological creatures? Fernando Reza has released a second series of his mythical beast travel posters, which highlight creatures of legend from around the world. When are we going to get a poster for the wampa of Hoth? I guess it doesn’t count if the place is fictional, too. Darn.

R2-D2 Charger Brings the Best Part of an X-Wing to Your Car

by Susana Polo

Who could say no to a little R2-D2 riding shotgun, extending helpful cables that recharge your devices and emitting the occasional soft “beepboop.” I know I couldn’t, so it’s a good thing I don’t own a car.

You should not be surprised that this is a ThinkGeek product.

From Wonderful Waffles to a French Ice Cream Treat, New Eats at Epcot

by Pam Brandon

Holidays Around the World at Epcot brings some delicious treats through January 4, 2014, at Promenade Refreshments (the Dessert and Champagne Marketplace during Epcot International Food & Wine Festival) in the entrance area to World Showcase.

Two waffles, one savory, one sweet, are the stars of this culinary show: a savory turkey waffle made with stuffing batter and topped with turkey, gravy and cranberry relish ($6.39); and a sweet potato waffle made with sweet potato batter and topped with caramel, toasted pecans and marshmallows. ($5.99). Waffles aren’t on the Disney Dining Plan.
LArtisan_des_Graces_009

Along with the waffles, there’s Twining’s tea (Chai, spice pumpkin, Christmas and peppermint flavors); hot chocolate flavored with toasted marshmallow, salted caramel and peanut butter, and cider flavored with toasted marshmallow, hazelnut and spiced cider with Frangelico.
LArtisan_des_Graces_005

At the France Pavilion, L’Artisan des Glaces ice cream shop features an over-the-top version of an ice-cream sandwich made with rich brioche and served with chocolate or raspberry sauce ($6.10). The French call it croque glacé, and it’s a warm, chewy pressed sandwich (how do they keep the ice cream from melting in the middle?) that starts with fresh brioche from the bakery next door. You pick the ice cream flavor, then add the sauce before it goes in the press. Voila! It’s genius. And just for the holidays they’ve added glace au pain d’épice (gingerbread ice cream).

And just for fun, check out the new Test Track cone cups at Coolwash – they come with a frozen Coca-Cola or Minute Maid raspberry lemonade for $9.50. A sippable souvenir.

The Atomic Purple Game Boy Color WTF

by Steve Napierski
The Atomic Purple Game Boy Color WTF

I really have no words to describe the uncomfortableness I have from looking at this image. Not sure why, but someone has taken the Atomic Purple Game Boy Color and turned it into a pulsating product of horror. The deep recesses from the control pad and buttons create and eerie face on the lower half of the system. The dark shadows and translucent purple color of the Game Boy Color don’t help much either. It’s really freaky. I cannot be the only one creeped out by this, can I?

PES Opens Online Store to Fund “Fresh Guacamole” Follow-Up

by Amid Amidi

How does one follow up an Oscar nomination for best animated short? Stop motion director PES, who was nominated this year for Fresh Guacamole, wants to make another short, but instead of traditional network or studio financing, he’s raising funds through an online store PES-Novelties.com.

“My immediate goal with the store is to raise financing for the third cooking film in my food trilogy,” says PES. The first two films in the series were Western Spaghetti and Fresh Guacamole.

Items in PES’s store include a screenprint (made in collaboration with Gina Kelly) for his film The Deep (shown above), a selection of “Curiosities” (objects that were collected by PES or which appeared in his films), and of course, the prerequisite film downloads and T-shirts.

What’s in the Box?

by Steve Napierski
What's in the Box?

Now if you want to make an interesting crossover, you could make one of the treasure chests in The Legend of Zelda contain the soul of Marsellus Wallace from Pulp Fiction. You see what I did there?

In all honesty, I love hearing that music when you open a chest with something worthwhile in it. I don’t want to hear any music when I get 25 rupees, I just want to get 25 rupees. At that point, it’s like having to watch a cutscene when I just want to play the game. Unnecessary filler.

On an unrelated note, I really need to pick up The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD for the Wii U. But first I need to pickup a Wii U. I could always get the The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD Limited Edition Bundle for Nintendo Wii U, but before I can even do that I need to get the money to afford it and justify such a large purchase. Darn priorities…

White Picket Fences

by Steve Napierski
White Picket Fences

Real world dimensions and design, and video games don’t usually equate to fun. I remember watching a recent video about Ellen Page in Beyond: Two Souls, for completely professional reasons, and thinking that the width of hallways and corridors in that game are ridiculously wide. We’re talking 10 ft. to 12 ft. (3m to 3.65m) hallways. Problem is the average hallway in real life is between 36″ to 40″ (roughly a meter), but you know what? That’s okay.

Video games, besides racing and sports titles, are a lot less fun with real world dimensions. There’s no room to move around and if stuff was logically laid out, it would become too repetitious and boring. So I say, embrace the illogical escapism that video games have to offer, because reality is overrated.

Final Fantasy: Damsel Dossier

Final Fantasy: Damsel Dossier

These mashups of the Disney Princesses with Final Fantasy classes reminds me of two things. One, that The Princess and the Frog is a very underrated movie and two, that I completely forgot all about Atlantis: The Lost Empire because it isn’t. Sorry, Cree Summer.

So here’s how the Disney Princesses break down:

Ariel (The Little Mermaid) – Red Mage
Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) – Black-Mage
Belle (Beauty and the Beast) – Beastmaster
Cinderella (Cinderella) – Paladin
Jasmine (Aladdin) – Summoner
Kida (Atlantis: The Lost Empire) – Dark-Knight
Merida (Brave) – Archer
Mulan (Mulan) – Monk
Pocahontasv(Pocahontas) – Warrior
Rapunzel (Rapunzel) – Thief
Snow-White (Snow White and the Seven Dwarves) – White-Mage
Tiana (The Princess and the Frog) – Lancer

Mario and McDonald's Feed Your Inner Child

by Boke Nasu
MARIO.png

I've barely been able to pull myself away from the Wii U since my copy of Super Mario 3D World arrived yesterday. Even the need to feed didn't stop the Mario madness thanks to McDonald’s new line of happy meal toys!

mariopenpenvintage.jpg

I've already snagged one where our pudgy plumber rockets out of a pipe and another where he waddles in a wind-up penguin suit. Gonna have to pick up the coin box and flag pole figures for dinner. But after the embarrassment of ordering a Happy Meal as a grown man, I don't know if I can face the staff again...

mariopipevintage.jpg

Well, at least I have the Demae Channel to deliver food to my room. I've vowed not to see the sun again until I show Bowser who's boss!

Make your Animal Crossing character into a real figure

by Vanessa Cubillo

I’ve tried to stay interested in my town in Animal Crossing: New Leaf, but I just couldn’t keep up with it daily. Now I get sad thinking about my town getting overrun with weeds and all my villagers leaving me. I also worked very hard getting the best clothes and finding the perfect look for my character.

Well, now you can appreciate the time and effort you put into your AC character with a custom figure. Etsy user, RezArmy, makes custom made resin figures based on your Animal Crossing: New Leaf character. These figures are close to four inches tall and hand painted with cel vinyl paint with a matte finish.

Prices start at US$40. I’d love to have a figure of my character dressed as royalty, mostly because I haven’t been able to afford that crown. I will have that crown any way I can get it!

Kibbles ‘n’ Bits, 11/19/13 – Sexual Harassment Edition

by Heidi MacDonald

CAStrip3DoneSiteOh lord, I am so tired of this and you probably are too, but here goes.

§ LJ user Beccatoria has a summary of Our Story So far.

§ At Comics Alliance, Kate Leth has a great cartoon about this.

§ As you probably know, another woman came out with accusations against Brian Wood yesterday, former DC employee Anne Scherbina. The most unsettling element of this story seems to be that it was passed along to the then Lying in the Gutters, and a whisper campaign seemed to be unleashed. I worked alongside Anne, although she had a different last name then; I’m a little sad to say my memories of her are murky; my murky memories are that she was a very nice young woman who didn’t deserve this.

§ Jeremy Shane at the Outhouse has a very good post called Hate the Player, Hate the Game: Sexual Harassment in the Comic Industry that very usefully, i think, takes this from the frame of reference of the specific to the larger larger issues that we all need to be aware of.

That’s not to say any one person’s actions should be overlooked – they absolutely should not – but for our part, fandom’s part, of this conversation to be more productive, we should remember the bigger issue here: the hostile environment created around anyone who speaks out, the attempts to discredit and dismiss them, and the pressure to just stay quiet. Speaking out about these events, no matter how small, no matter how long ago, can only serve to show people that this is a real problem that needs addressing. The culture of silence needs to end, and what we can do to make that happen is to support the rights of women to express themselves on this matter.

And you know that’s why I’m writing this post. This whole subject now makes my skin crawl but the silence needs to end. A collective confessional seems to have taken hold as more stories are coming out.

§ Rantz Hoseley has a couple of stories that aren’t what you expect, In one, what seemed to be some consensual group, sexy times freaked him out entirely. Which is his right. CONSENSUAL. You don’t have to go along with it if you don’t like it. In another, Dave Sim, of all people, delivers a very balanced critique of a young woman’s art. I don’t think we should give him a medal for doing what’s, uh, the right thing to do but…well you never know where it’s going to come from.

§ Finally, my friend Mariah Huehner came out with her own stories of sexual harassment and this is where I lost my shit because I worked with Mariah and she is just about the nicest, smartest person in the world who deserves to be treated with nothing but respect and what happened to her is disgusting. A freelancer writes to her with lewd comments? FUCK THAT SHIT. How could you treat a co-worker-technically your employer—like that? Convention groping? Disgusting. I know it took Mariah a lot of courage to write that post but the ending is so powerful.

We’re told not to “make” men feel bad about what other men do. That relaying our stories is generalizing and condemning and unfair. We’re told it’s our responsibility to “get over it”. To internalize every single thing we are subjected to as “just the way it is” and, ultimately, our fault for existing as women in spaces. For existing in the world. For trying to make our way in that world and be treated as human beings. We are told: don’t feel this way. Don’t think these things. Don’t express normal human emotions, like anger and resentment, about upsetting experiences. Stop talking about things we don’t want to hear about. Stop telling us we are complicit through our inaction. Stop expressing yourself in ways we don’t like. Stop making us uncomfortable about the things that go on around us that we don’t see/ignore. Don’t trust yourself. Don’t exist in ways we don’t like. Don’t exist in “our” spaces. Don’t try to live your life like it matters. Like it’s important. Like you have the right to be here.

Women don’t exist for you to approve of or to make you feel better about the shitty way the world works. We don’t exist for you at all. We exist for ourselves. And we’re going to keep demanding for our rightful place in the world whether you like it or not.

Mariah’s stories—and sadly I know they are not the only ones of their kind—are just revolting. They could happen in many settings, but is this what we as an industry want to be the environment?

I was going to tell a few stories of my own here, but I’m too mad and sad to write them up. I will say that at least on one occasion, the men—the REAL men, I should say—of the con physically kicked out the offender. I’ve seen that happen several times, and it is the good part of the usually wonderful comics community that I’ve spent my adult life in. BarCon is a fun and essential part of the comics world, and obviously, the normal human pursuits of having a relaxing drink, talking shop and engaging in harmless flirting—or perhaps more serious flirting—with your colleagues in the industry is part of what makes life a rich tapestry of experience and companionship. I met my own husband outside a hotel bar at a con, and a lot of actual relationships have started in this setting. AND a lot of one-night stands that both people had fun with. CONSENSUAL ACTIVITIES. That doesn’t mean turning into a sloppy drunk, groping, leering, unwanted sexual talk, upskirts, calling your friends over to laugh, not taking no for an answer, belittling someone when you get shot down, stalking, or any of that other crap that WE ALL KNOW IS WRONG.

All I have to say is…decent men, be decent. Don’t let the sex pests out there ruin everything.

And women, if you are upset, talk about it. Find friends. There are plenty of great women in the business now, and many decent men. Rachel Edidin, who has been the tireless Agent Cooper in all of this, has a post called Comics, Conventions, and Harassment: A Personal Promise in which she promises to help harassment victims at a con. A lot more people should make that promise. It takes a village, and the village doesn’t need sex pests.

AND NOW…back to the comics.

PS: I’m keeping comments open on this but, in the words of Walter White, TREAD LIGHTLY.

Thousands Protest Rape Culture In New Zealand, Saying It’s Become ‘A National Health Crisis’

Thousands marched in Aukland this weekend to protest rape culture

Over a thousand people marched in Aukland this weekend to protest rape culture, one of multiple events across the country on Saturday

CREDIT: Fairfax NZ News

Over this past weekend, thousands of people in New Zealand took to the streets to protest a culture that doesn’t take rape seriously. The public backlash has intensified over the past several weeks, ever since an investigation exposed a group of teens who call themselves the “Roast Busters.”

The members of the Roast Busters target teenage girls, ply them with alcohol until they’re often close to unconsciousness, gang-rape them, and then upload the evidence to social media sites in an attempt to shame their victims. After the news of the Roast Busters began to spread, many New Zealanders were horrified that their society allowed this type of “rape club” to flourish.

At first, the police force claimed that their hands were tied, and they were unable to prosecute the members of the Roast Busters because none of the victims had ever come forward to file a formal complaint. But it turns out that’s not exactly true. At least one victim did attempt to report the crime, but she was essentially told that she didn’t have a case because of what she was wearing at the time of the assault. “They said that I didn’t have enough evidence to show, because I went out in clothes that was pretty much asking for it,” that victim told 3 News. “I was asked a lot of questions about what I was wearing, and I went out in a skirt.” She pointed out that the lack of police action made her feel like the sexual assault was her fault.

There’s been some speculation that the members of the Roast Busters haven’t been prosecuted because of their relatively prominent roles in the community. One is reportedly a local police officer’s son. Another is the son of a Hollywood actor who appeared in The Matrix.

Now, more than 100,000 people have signed an online petition asking New Zealand’s prime minister to “bust the Roast Busters.”

Jessie Hume spearheaded the petition, and she also participated in the weekend’s protests. She told 3 News that she hopes this public backlash ultimately spurs New Zealand’s Parliament to action. In addition to demanding justice for the victims of the Roast Busters, Hume wants to pressure the country to implement broader policies that support victims.

“There have been a lot of cutbacks to the crisis services. They’re desperately underfunded, and when we’re talking about one in four women being affected by sexual violence, and one in eight men, we’re talking about something that is nothing less than a national health crisis,” Hume pointed out. “It’s a public health crisis and it needs to be addressed.”

This type of public health crisis isn’t limited to New Zealand. On a global scale, sexual violence has reached epidemic levels, affecting an estimated one in three women around the world. The most recent international study on the topic estimated that as many as one in four men in some parts of the world have committed rape.

Here in the United States, a similar victim-blaming culture dissuades rape survivors from coming forward, and sexual assault remains extremely under-reported. College activists across the U.S. have been working to shift this culture and fight for policies that take rape seriously. But it’s been a slow process, and most academic institutions still haven’t taken the right steps to help prevent sexual assault. One preventative measure that most activists agree on is very simple: Comprehensive sexual health education. Teaching kids about sexual boundaries from a young age can help reinforce the concept of consent.

Disney's Sword in the Stone is captured in LEGO

by Natalie Kipper

I have found that Disney's Sword in the Stone is one of those movies that you appreciate more as you get older. One thing I never really thought about as a child was the setting and locales in the film. Of all the places, I noticed there was a lot of detail in the dilapidated tower that Merlin stayed in during his time in Sir Ector's castle.

The Brothers Brick recently posted a recreation of the tower made entirely from LEGOs. This piece by Luke Watkins Hutchinson (also known as -Derfel Cadarn-), entitled "Kay's Squire," not only faithfully recreates Merlin's tower (complete with Merlin and a tiny Archimedes!) but also the courtyard beneath, where Wart helps Kay train for the jousting tournament. Luke even made the wooden knight contraption that serves as Kay's target. The amount of detail in this work is stunning. You can see more angles of the tower as well as close-ups of different parts of the sculpture on Luke's Flickr page.

Ask Chris #171: The Superman (Well, Supermen) of the Marvel Universe

by Chris Sims
kate

Really fantastic analysis of the cores of the DC and Marvel Universes.

Q: Do Superman-esque characters like The Sentry or Blue Marvel work in the Marvel Universe? -- @SuperSeth64

A: You know, Seth, this is one of those questions that seems really simple when you first look at it. I mean, it's a yes or no question, so the short answer is about as short as it can possibly be. The thing is, the reasoning behind that answer has to do with how entire shared fictional universes work and how they've been influencing each other for the past 50 to 70 years, and how one character in particular has defined an entire genre that came to dominate the medium, so for the long answer, well, I hope you've got a few minutes.

If you don't, here's the short answer: No. No they do not.

Another must read: Whit Taylor ‘On Being a Black Female “Indie” Cartoonist’

by Heidi MacDonald

201311151323.jpg

There’s that social context for indie comics I was talking about a while ago. Following a twitter exchange, Ignatz nominee Whit Taylor expands on issues of race in indie comics circles:

I feel slightly uncomfortable talking about my own experiences, because I don’t want to alienate or blame anyone. Indeed my work doesn’t appeal to some people and that’s normal, but I have felt alienated at times due to my race. Sometimes I wonder if people pass my table at a con, size me up and assume that they will not be able to identify with my work or experience because I’m black. Maybe this is ridiculous, but from a life of learning to detect subtle racism, I won’t discount it. Indeed some, OK ALOT, of my work deals with race and I have no qualms about that. But that is not the entirety of what I write or care about when creating a piece. I’m a black cartoonist, but I’m also a cartoonist who happens to be black.

The best part of the story is that Taylor has found a way to make a difference by encouraging readers to check out unfamiliar material. Anyway, just read the wole thing.

Japan is getting these cute Sailor Moon UFO toys

by Vanessa Cubillo

It feels like every day now there’s news of new Sailor Moon items coming out. There’s chopsticks, ear phones, nail designs; it’s nonstop! This may sound like a complaint, but really I’m on board with all of this.

So now Japan will be getting four new super cute Sailor Moon figures: Sailor Moon, Luna, Sailor Mercury and Sailor Mars. What’s so different about these figures? Well, these will only be available as prizes in UFO crane games in Japan.

That means they’re not for sale! That of course makes me want them more. Just look at their design. These figures have a more feminine style with softer eyes and more detail to the hair. Luna looks so happy too.

I’m sure these figures will eventually make its way to online sites, but at inflated prices. For Japan, these Sailor Moon figures will be in arcades in April.
