Evolution of the Xbox and Playstation Controllers

by Steve Napierski
The Evolution of the Playstation ControllerThe Evolution of the Xbox Controller

I’m going to give GadgetLove props for some awesome looking animated GIFs. It’s pretty cool to see the Xbox and Playstation controllers morphing between their different console iterations. That said, I do feel that took the easy road by not also including all the Nintendo controllers.

With the Xbox and Playstation controllers, you are only morphing between four different controllers. For the Xbox there is the Xbox (Duke), Xbox (S-Type), Xbox 360, and Xbox One. With the Playstation you have Playstation 1, 2, 3, and 4. BUT with Nintendo you have the Nintendo Entertainment System, NES2, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, GameCube, Wii (Wiimote), Wii (classic controller), and Wii U. It’s a lot harder, isn’t it? They should actually create a few different versions since Japan had the Famicom and the west had the NES, and the North America version of the Super Nintendo was different from the rest of the world. So if I had to guess correctly, that’s three different versions all together. Right?

Regardless, I’m not going to be the one to make it. So I have no problem putting expectations, whether they are reasonable or unreasonable, on GadgetLove of what I want them to create. Git ‘er done.

Fully Restored

That’s just adorable. Roll is taking care of her brother just in time for him to go back out into the world and slaughter their robot brethren. That’s right, I went there. I took something cute and made it dark. That’s just how I roll. I see a red door and I want it painted black.

Disney’s ‘Frozen’-Inspired Ice Sculptures Wow Crowds at Belgium Festival

by Thomas Smith

There’s a new exhibit of spectacular ice sculptures themed around Disney’s “Frozen” that we thought Disney Parks Blog readers would enjoy seeing.

More than 70 “Frozen”-themed sculptures, featuring characters and scenes from the hit movie, are now on display at the famous Snow and Ice Sculpture Festival in Bruges, Belgium. Ice artists also created sculptures of Disneyland Paris at this year’s Festival.

Visitors to a recent “Frozen” event at the exhibit not only got a first peek at the ice sculptures but they also had a chance to greet special characters from the film, Anna and Elsa. The Walt Disney Company Belgium and Disneyland Paris worked together with the Festival to create the first-of-its-kind exhibit.

If you’re in the area, you can see the ice sculptures throughout the holiday season.

Pirates of the Caribbean Marks 40 Years at Magic Kingdom Park

by Jennifer Fickley-Baker

newlead

Pirates of the Caribbean, a guest-favorite attraction at the Walt Disney World Resort, will mark its 40th anniversary at Magic Kingdom Park on Sunday, December 15.

The first Pirates of the Caribbean, which transports guests back to a Caribbean filled with pirate treasure, blasting cannons, swordfights and songs, opened at Disneyland park in 1967. The attraction debuted at Magic Kingdom Park in 1973, serving as one of the park’s first major additions after its 1971 opening.

Pirates

Over the years, only a few changes have been made to the attraction here at Walt Disney World Resort, notably the addition of Captain Jack Sparrow and Captain Barbossa from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” film franchise in 2006. Villains Davy Jones and Black Beard were also added later on in the form of ghostly apparitions.

Did you know that Pirates of the Caribbean was one of the last attractions Walt Disney personally oversaw the creation of back in the 1960s? During planning, Walt constructed a team Walt Disney Imagineers that included (now Disney Legends) Claude Coats, Blaine Gibson, X. Atencio and Marc Davis. In honor of the attraction’s anniversary, check out the video clip above, in which Walt himself shares his excitement on plans for Pirates of the Caribbean.

Realizing Any Publicity is Good Publicity, NBC Decides to Do This Live Musical Thing Every Year

by Susana Polo

NBC’s live bradcast of The Sound of Music last weekend was greeted with much the same attitude as Sharknado: a far fetched concept (The Sound of Music without Julie Andrews?), but an ambitious undertaking nonetheless (a live-broadcast stage musical?), likely to be entertaining only in the degree to which it might be a total trainwreck.

And the show delivered, both to folks looking to revel in its technical glitches and lackluster casting (if you didn’t catch it the first time, you can catch an encore this weekend), and to NBC executives who quite enjoyed those 18.6 million viewers who turned their ears and eyeballs to the program. So, of course, they’re planning more.

NBC Chairman Bob Greenblatt told Deadline, that the success of next year’s broadcast “hinges on finding a title that can be rated G, as was The Sound of Music, and has loads of very familiar tunes – and on securing the services of another music star with a large fan base, like [Carrie] Underwood.” So there you have it folks: all your hate tweeting about The Sound of Music means we get to do it all again in a year. Trust me, it’s not going to be that difficult for NBC to find another G rated musical production with songs that everybody knows. They could just do Grease.

Wait, is Grease G-rated? Do pregnancy scares count as more PG than Nazis? Well, anyway, they could do Bye Bye Birdie. I’m pretty sure there’s nothing untoward in there. But part of me hopes that there’s an extended mixup and NBC winds up producing a stage musical version of Rosemary’s Baby. See, NBC has just greenlit a four hour miniseries based on the 1967 novel that inspired the 1968 film that will make you never want to have children or talk to your neighbors ever again. Come on, NBC mail room interns, just mix up some internal memos. I know you can make this happen.

Shut. Down. Everything. There’s a Company That Prints Gifs.

by Rebecca Pahle

Through the magic of lenticular printing—you know, those pictures with two separate images on them, and you switch back and forth by moving it around—Brooklyn-based startup gifpop is printing the pinnacle of human artistic achievement: The gif. Yes, you can upload your own, though the limit is ten frames. You can even choose two still images—like, for instance, happy Bilbo and Bilbo flipping everyone off. There has to be a catch, like you’re not allowed to use gifs from copyrighted material or something. The website doesn’t specify, but the universe cannot be good enough to allow me to have a physical copy of Nathan Fillion being judgey to carry around with me, close to my heart.

Disney is Making a High School Drama Show About the Kids of its Most Famous Villains

by Susana Polo

TV movie Descendants will revolve around the offspring of the main characters of Beauty and the Beast, CinderellaSleeping Beauty, Tangled, and Mulan, heading into prep school with the new kids: four children descended from Cruella De Vil, Maleficent, the Evil Queen (Snow White), and Jafar.

Let me repeat: Disney is making a high school AU based on the children of their most famous characters. And you better believe that if it does well it’ll become a spinoff series.

I have so many questions.

The new regent of the kingdom in which this takes place is the child of “King and Queen from “Beauty and the Beast,” is he the son of Belle and the Beast, or is he the Beast, or is he, like, the Beast’s brother?

If he is the child of Belle and the Beast, how attractive is he going to be? Generic handsome, or “I feel kind of bad about how hot I think this animated teenager is” handsome? Will he and Rapunzel and Flynn Ryder’s kid be having smoulder-offs?

Apparently this takes place in a universe where all Disney villains, henchmen, and evil family members have been banished to an island. On a scale of one to Toon Town, how crazy is that island?

So I understand Carlos De Vil, but are Mal, Evvie, and Jay (children of Maleficent, Evil Queen, and Jafar, respectively) going to have some equally amazing last names?

How are we reconciling the temporal setting of 101 Dalmations with the various classical antiquity or historical era time periods of Mulan, Aladdin, or Sleeping Beauty? Are we making any effort to reconcile it at all?

Has Tumblr already decided I’ll be ‘shipping? No, it does not matter that we don’t know what gender Mal and Jay, nor any of the offspring of the “good” characters are.

Question time over. At the risk of repeating myself:

“We mined Disney’s treasure trove of stories and developed a new, comedic approach to the fabled characters everyone knows and loves,” said Disney Channels Worldwide prexy-chief creative officer. “The result is a modern and unexpected re-interpretation of classic heritage characters utilizing contemporary, relatable settings and themes.”

Disney is making a high school AU about their characters kids, and the core cast has a middle eastern character in it, if not additionally Hispanic/Latino or Chinese characters as well. Here is a dumb idea I can get unironically excited about.

The Naked Gun, Murder on the Orient Express Are Getting Remakes

by Rebecca Pahle

It might be because my brain’s in Friday mode, but I’m having a tough time imagining two films that are more polar opposites than The Naked Gun and Murder on the Orient Express. One is a classic film veritably filled with cinematic legends bringing their Oscar-worthy talents to the table. And the other is based on an Agatha Christie novel. But today the two very different films have something in common: They’re being run through Hollywood’s remake machine.

Technically Paramount is rebooting The Naked Gun, not remaking it, but let’s not split hairs, hm? Taking over as Detective Frank Drebin will be Ed Helms, who’s a very funny guy, but… to me this is one of those roles that’s just wrong to recast. Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator. Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. The late Leslie Nielsen as Frank Drebin.

That said, the 21 Jump Street reboot surprised me by being absolutely hilarious, so who knows? Thomas Lennon and R. Ben Garant, two of the creators of Reno 911! are writing the screenplay. They’ve also written the Night at the Museum movies. I wonder who’s going to play the O.J. Simpson character. Dwayne Wade? He’s football*, right?

As for Murder on the Orient Express, that’s being remade by Ridley Scott, Simon Kinberg, and Mark Gordon for Fox. All three are producing; so far there’s no writer or director attached. It’s a powerhouse trio, and between them they have a ton of projects already in the works, including the Biblical epic Exodus and sequels to Prometheus and Blade Runner (Scott), the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises (Kinberg), and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Silver Chair (Gordon).

I’m actually moderately excited about this one, because the original movie has a cast that is absolutely bonkers. Ingrid Bergman. Lauren Bacall. Albert Finney. Anthony Perkins. Sean ConneryJacqueline Bisset. John Gielgud. Richard York. Vanessa Redgrave. All in the same movie. I get a little frisson of joy just imagining what the modern equivalent would be. Get Helen Mirren to be the John Gielgud valet character (hey, it was the only interesting thing about the Arthur remake). Bribe Sean Connery out of retirement and he can play the same character he was before (a few decades older, but it’d work). Meryl Streep as Lauren Bacall’s outgoing socialite—there really is no other option. Tom Hardy and Gary Oldman can be there, too. Hell, have Tom Hardy play Hercule Poirot. It may seem a bit weird, but so does him playing Elton John, and that’s happening. I’m firmly convinced he could pull it off.

THR notes that the movie could take place in the present-day, since the Orient Express doesn’t run anymore. Or it could be a period piece. I’m wishing for the former, since I think it’d be interesting to see what happens when you take an Agatha Christie story and add cell phones and security cameras to the mix.

What do you think? Is there a chance you might see one/both of these movies?

*I Googled him and discovered that he is not football. What is sport?

With hundreds of comics released to stores every month, a great cover can make a big difference. That tiny rectangle needs to grab the eye, set a mood, convey an idea, and entice a reader to pick the book up and look inside. It takes a great cover artist to get all of that right.

ComicsAlliance continues its look back at some of the best cover work in 2013 from some of the most talented cover artists in the industry. This week we pick highlights from the work of Nathan Fox (Collider/FBP), Francesco Francavilla (Black Beetle), Chip Zdarsky (Sex Criminals) and John Paul Leon (The Massive).
