Getting Psyched For The Marathon
Canada sets universal broadband goal of 50Mbps and unlimited data for all
Canada's telecom regulator yesterday declared that broadband Internet must be considered "a basic telecommunications service for all Canadians" and created a fund to connect rural and remote communities. With this decision, high-speed broadband is now treated as an essential technology similar to voice service.
All Canadians should be able to purchase home Internet with 50Mbps download speeds and 10Mbps uploads, and they should have the option of purchasing unlimited data, the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) announcement said. A new fund will make $750 million available over the next five years to support projects in areas where that level of broadband isn't available.
Money will be distributed to applicants based upon a competitive process. Funding can be used either for fixed broadband service or to upgrade mobile networks, but the goals of 50Mbps/10Mbps and unlimited data for all is specifically for home Internet service. About 10 percent will be allocated to communities that are dependent on satellite access.
World’s first solar road opens in France: It’s ridiculously expensive

Charly Triballeau/AFP/Getty Images
The world's first solar highway has been opened in France, in the not-very-sunny village of Tourouvre au Perche in Normandy. The roadway is just one kilometre (0.6mi) long, but that still works out at 2,800 square metres of photovoltaic cells—enough, hopefully, to power the village's street lights.
The road was built by Colas, a large Anglo-French construction company. Colas has apparently been working on its own solar road tech, called Wattway, for at least five years. Wattway has been tested in car parks, but this is the first time it has been used on an active road. There will now be a two-year test period, to see if Wattway can withstand the rigour of being pounded by thousands of cars and trucks per day, and whether it can actually provide a useful amount of electricity.

A Collection of Terrifying Snowmen [Pics + Video]

You guys really love scary snowmen, so here’s a collection of rather terrifying ones to finish 2016. Calvin & Hobbes would totally approve of these!
Hopefully, 2017 will be a more positive year than 2016!

Player One [Comic]
Seems like the men living in the Mushroom Kingdom are not that different compared to those living in this reality. Mario certainly takes things to extremes, though.

Liquid shell gives inertial confinement fusion a smoother burn

The preamplifiers of the National Ignition Facility are the first step in increasing the energy of laser beams as they make their way toward the target chamber. NIF recently achieved a 500 terawatt shot—then it had to turn it down. (credit: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory )
In order to investigate something called inertial confinement fusion (or ICF, which we'll talk about below), scientists at the National Ignition Facility built the biggest damn laser in the world. Located in Livermore, California, the NIF's laser is capable of producing something like 500TW of power per pulse, and the facility is so futuristic that parts of Star Trek Into Darkness were filmed there.
So imagine the disappointment felt by everyone at the NIF when, even though their laser worked fine, the amount of fusion it appeared to produce was shockingly low. Researchers now may have identified the problem and have shown that many neutrons can be observed at the NIF. Neutrons are a result of fusion, so the number of neutrons is a measure of how many atoms have fused. The problem is that, to produce efficient fusion, we can't currently use the facility at its full power.
Small hydrogen bombs
The idea behind inertial confinement fusion is simple. To get two atoms to fuse together, you need to bring their nuclei into contact with each other. Both nuclei are positively charged, so they repel each other, which means that force is needed to convince two hydrogen nuclei to touch. In a hydrogen bomb, force is generated when a small fission bomb explodes, compressing a core of hydrogen. This fuses to create heavier elements, releasing a huge amount of energy.
Firefox takes the next step toward rolling out multi-process to everyone

A single Firefox process. (credit: Roger)
With Firefox 50, Mozilla has rolled out the first major piece of its new multi-process architecture. Firefox 50 is also Firefox's current stable release.
Edge, Internet Explorer, Chrome, and Safari all have a multiple process design that separates their rendering engine—the part of the browser that reads and interprets HTML, CSS, and JavaScript—from the browser frame. They do this for stability reasons (if the rendering process crashes, it doesn't kill the entire browser) and security reasons (the rendering process can be run in a low-privilege sandbox, so exploitable flaws in the rendering engine are harder to take advantage of).
Moreover, these browsers can all create multiple rendering engine processes and use different processes for different tabs. This means that the scope of a crash is narrowed even further, typically to a single tab. Internet Explorer and Chrome both implemented this long ago, in 2009.
All the Roles You Never Knew Alan Tudyk Played
Imgur user GifFortuneTeller wrote this post in honor of Alan Tudyk and all the roles you probably never knew he played! There’s probably a couple missing from this list too! Can you name a few? Let us know in the comments section below!

Let me tell you about this beautifully underappreciated bastard, Alan Tudyk. This guy is a freaking legend and the sad part is, nobody even knows who he is. Terrible. This is a post to get him some of the credit he deserves. Here he is in his most known role, Wash from Firefly (He was a leaf on the wind.)

Oh cool, he’s Sonny from I-Robot?

What is this a hillbilly? No its Tucker from Tucker and Dale vs Evil (Shut up and go watch this right now).

Alpha from Dollhouse (Joss Whedon made this sh*t too.)

What? He’s King Candy from Wreck-It-Ralph. Sure f* is.

Green Arrow from Young Justice? Yep also all the video games, ever play Injustice?

Arrested Development’s very own Pastor Veal.

Frozen too?! Here he is as the Duke.

This suave guy is Alistair Krei from Big Hero 6 (Also go watch this. Bring the kids.)

Well whats he done recently you ask, here is as the chicken from Moana!

And of course, K-2SO from Rogue One. Seriously? What isn’t he in.
Thank you Alan Tudyk.
Thank you on behalf of us all.

A 3D Printed Version of the Original Legend of Zelda Map [Pics]

A man named Willard McFarland purchased this fantastic 3D printed version of the original Legend of Zelda map via the Trade Sell Collect Retro Facebook group. The creator of the map spend around six month building the whole thing in Minecraft, and then exported the design into a file that could be used by a 3D printer. After 24 hours of printing non stop and then six hours of painting, the 3D version of the map was complete!
