Earthbound creator and Nintendo collaborate for another fun...

I like how Earthbound guy just likes to make unusual stuff

Earthbound creator and Nintendo collaborate for another fun thing ⊟

Hobonichi, the Japanese company headed by Mother/Earthbound creator Shigesato Itoi and the maker of fine daily planners, has teamed up with Nintendo for a cute, unexpected product: Super Mario Bros. and Mr. Saturn haramaki belly warmers.

They’re part of Hobonichi’s 2014 Summer Collection, available on the company’s online store now. Pingmag and the Hobonichi Love blog explain the accessory’s appeal:

"The haramaki was once strictly functional underwear that had a grandpa-image similar to yellowing long johns. In 2001, Hobonichi reinvented them as fashion items to layer with your clothes.

You know those everyday momentary chills you get when you bend over and your shirt rides up a little? Gone. I see London, I see France, I see someone’s wearing a super handsome belly warmer over their pants. Studies have proven that wearing this thick, extra layer around your stomach keeps the rest of your body warm in the winter. It’s also great in the summer when trapped inside all day under a blasting air conditioner.”

You can find instructions on how to purchase a haramaki from Hobonichi’s Japanese site here. More photos after the break!

The bundle comes with a Wii U copy of the game, a special edition GameCube controller, and a four-port GameCube controller adapter (Wii U console not included). It’s $99.99 for the package, which is $10 cheaper than what you’d pay for everything separately.

And here’s where you can buy everything separately:

You also have the option of finding someone to mod your 2DS/3DS with a GameCube controller adapter. Thanks to @Wario64 for the tip!

Mystery Murasame Whatever sound like its worth checking out. And Cybernator.

Virtual Console is awesome again ⊟

Nintendo has trickled out a few Virtual Console classics in recent months, but today’s U.S. releases are exceptionally nice! On the Wii U, we now have Super Mario Kart (SNES), Mega Man 5 (NES), and awesome mecha action game Cybernator/Assault Suits Vaiken (SNES)!

The 3DS Virtual Console only gets one game, but it’s The Mysterious Murasame Castle, the first-party Famicom Disk System game that looks very much like the original Zelda, though it plays very differently. While the game never released outside of Japan in its original form, it’s featured in recent titles like Samurai Warriors 3, Nintendo Land, and the new Smash Bros.

In other eShop news, Steel Diver: Sub Wars also received an update with new local Friend Battle stages, unlockable subs and crew members, and, finally, features for battling with friends online.

This guy is ready for Smash Bros. 3DS ⊟

Loopy, the same bloke who brought us video capture boards for the 3DS, is showing off a GameCube controller adapter mod he whipped up for a 2DS.

"What I do to amuse myself. I re-purposed an old capture board. Along with the standard buttons, the GC analog stick is also mapped to the 3DS d-pad. C-stick also goes to Y/X/B/A."

You can watch a video of him playing Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition with the controller after the break.

Metrico Out Today on PS Vita, Free for PS Plus

by Roy van de Mortel
Paul Brownlee

It's nice having a Vita an not having to pay for games for it. Just wish the storage options weren't so ridiculous

Today is the day. Metrico is available now on PS Vita. We have one more post on Metrico to celebrate this and share some insights about Trophies and PS Plus, but we’d like to start out with the premiere of the Metrico Release trailer!

Metrico Trophies

Since experimenting is the very core of Metrico, we wanted to incorporate this in every aspect of the game as part of our holistic design process. This means we took quite some time to come up with a cool — possibly rather difficult — set of Trophies for the game. We decided to make all of them hidden and see how long it takes for you to figure them out and spread them across the internet. As such, it wouldn’t make much sense to spoil them here, but I can talk about them a little bit:

There are a total of 11 Trophies in the game. Each of Metrico’s six worlds have unique Trophies, which can be earned by completing each world while meeting specific requirements. There are a couple more obvious Trophies scattered throughout the game that will also prove to be difficult to find and solve… Good luck finding them all!

PlayStation Plus

By now, most of you have probably seen the PlayStation Plus lineup for August and noticed Metrico is available for free immediately at release on August 5th for PS Plus members. For those of you who didn’t get the news already… surprise!

Like we explained in previous blog posts, Metrico’s core gameplay with the “Input Morphing” mechanic is very hard to explain. We keep reading comments from people who are left flabbergasted after seeing a Metrico trailer, and simply have no clue what the game is about. We have to admit we made some experimental trailers, but either way, we know the only way to really understand Metrico is to play it. That’s why we are very happy that Metrico’s demo is playable in retail stores across the US, and has been playable at dozens of events worldwide in the past year, so people could check Metrico out themselves and understand what the game is about. Now Metrico is free for PS Plus members, so you have almost no reason to not check it out as well!

Being a part of PS Plus is a great opportunity for us to reach as many players as possible with what we’ve been working on for the past two years. This will most likely also include a lot of players who might not even have considered buying the game. We at Digital Dreams think it’s awesome we might now tempt them to play as well. They will get a nice introduction to the Metrico universe and understand what a possible future game in this universe will be about.

Wrapping Up

Time to tie up some loose ends! We haven’t revealed the price point for Metrico yet. Metrico will be free for one month from August 5th for PlayStation Plus subscribers. Metrico is available for non-subscribers (and after that month for everybody) for $13.99.

Time for a little holiday now. Thank you so much for reading and for all your support throughout Metrico’s development! It was quite a journey for us and it was great to see your comments on PlayStation.Blog. Keep an eye out for future announcements from us and please follow us on Twitter and Facebook to let us know if Metrico lived up to your expectations!

Enjoy exploring Metrico.

The Misleading Fliers Comcast Used To Kill Off a Local Internet Competitor

by Unknown Lamer
Paul Brownlee

Come the fuck on man. This wasn't too far from where I live.

Jason Koebler (3528235) writes In the months and weeks leading up to a referendum vote that would have established a locally owned fiber network in three small Illinois cities, Comcast and SBC (now AT&T) bombarded residents and city council members with disinformation, exaggerations, and outright lies to ensure the measure failed. The series of two-sided postcards painted municipal broadband as a foolhardy endeavor unfit for adults, responsible people, and perhaps as not something a smart woman would do. Municipal fiber was a gamble, a high-wire act, a game, something as "SCARY" as a ghost. Why build a municipal fiber network, one asked, when "internet service [is] already offered by two respectable private businesses?" In the corner, in tiny print, each postcard said "paid for by SBC" or "paid for by Comcast." The postcards are pretty absurd and worth a look.

Yumi’s Odd Odyssey now $20 ⊟

Not a sale, not a promo – Yumi’s Odd Odyssey, the localized version of Sayonara Umihara Kawase, has had a permanent price drop as of yesterday, to $19.99 on the eShop.

I never properly reviewed it, but I like it a lot, and $20 is an even more appealing price for it! And, uh, I should get back to that now that I’m sorta between games. I suspect a lot of people are between games just at the moment.

Club Nintendo’s platinum/gold prizes are game...

by 20xx
Paul Brownlee

Oh sweet I can get NES remix. There's some other good stuff too.

Club Nintendo’s platinum/gold prizes are game downloads ⊟

Yeah, this year’s Elite gifts from North American Club Nintendo are not exclusive physical goods like they were in previous years – Mario hats, figurines, etc. They’re not even the old standby calendar.

Instead, this year you can select one of 16 Wii U or 3DS games as a free download, ranging from full retail games (like Game & Wario) to fucking Ice Climber.

Club Nintendo has gone down while I was writing this post, but you can get the reward here when it comes back up. Though I like my Club Nintendo Mario hat and all, I’m not hating on a free copy of Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D.

Now Available on Steam - Crouching Pony Hidden Dragon

by Valve
Paul Brownlee

interesting

Crouching Pony Hidden Dragon is Now Available on Steam!

Crouching Pony Hidden Dragon is an Action/RPG type of game, totally novel and initially developed for SNK’s Neo-Geo console.

Under his false look of simple arcade game, CPHD hides a persistent world of rich and various rules, where « run’n gun » mechanics mix themselves with playful « RPG » ones.
