Freaking cool

Smash Bros. for TI-83/84 calculators ⊟

Obviously, we’re not talking about a 1-for-1 port here. You’re not going to be playing For Glory matches online with Rosalina’s full moveset against three other people in the Nintendogs stage. That doesn’t make this Smash Bros. Open TI-83/84 project from Hayleia any less impressive. It looks like the game only supports Falco and Fox so far, but it has multiplayer. Oh, and it’s free. If you want more than that, maybe you can help Hayleia with development.

PS4 on Black Friday: GTA V Bundle and LEGO Batman 3 Bundle

by John Koller
Paul Brownlee

Yeah, I was kinda hoping for some sort of console discount, but assuming this will be on Amazon, I could just use some of my Rewards Card fun money to knock the price down.

GTA V Black Friday Bundle

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and with it comes the excitement of impending Black Friday deals on the hottest gifts of the holiday season. Ever since its launch one year ago, PlayStation 4 has been the number one console, and today I’m pleased to officially announce two Black Friday PS4 bundles featuring some of the biggest games of the year for gamers in the United States and Canada.

The first bundle is the Grand Theft Auto V PS4 Black Friday Bundle featuring a 500GB PS4 and a copy of Grand Theft Auto V, as well as a digital download voucher for The Last of Us Remastered — all for just $399.99 USD/$449.99 CAD. Get a brand new PS4 just in time for the holidays with this epic bundle!

The critically acclaimed open world, Grand Theft Auto V, comes to PlayStation 4 with a host of technical upgrades and enhancements including enhanced resolution, greater draw distances, new wildlife, vehicles and weapons, and a brand new seamlessly integrated first-person mode.

Good news for all those who have already spent countless hours exploring everything Grand Theft Auto Online has to offer on PS3 or Xbox 360 — with Grand Theft Auto V on PS4, you can transfer your existing GTA Online characters and progress to your PS4 so you don’t have to start over. And if you are making your return to Los Santos and Blaine County on PS4, you’ll also get access to exclusive vehicles, weapons, collectibles and more.

This bundle also provides the perfect opportunity to play The Last of Us Remastered — the definitive version of the game that won over 200 game of the year awards — featuring enhanced visuals and loads of additional content.

LEGO Batman Black Friday Bundle

Our second Black Friday bundle features a 500GB PS4, LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham and LittleBigPlanet 3 — all for just $399.99 USD/$449.99 CAD. Pack your space suit and join LEGO Batman on an out-of-this-world adventure as the Caped Crusader joins forces with the super heroes of the DC Comics Universe and blasts off to outer space to stop the evil Brainiac from destroying Earth. And in LittleBigPlanet 3, you can explore a world filled with limitless imagination as Sackboy and his new cast of friends — OddSock, Swoop and Toggle.

Make sure you mark your calendars for Black Friday, because these bundles won’t last long. Check your local retailer and pick them up while supplies last to get the ultimate deal on PS4!

Black IT Pros On (Lack Of) Racial Diversity In Tech

by timothy
Paul Brownlee

Honestly, I don't think I've had that much trouble finding IT jobs overall. Also, all White people are racist, news at 11.

Nerval's Lobster writes While pundits and analysts debate about diversity in Silicon Valley, one thing is very clear: Black Americans make up a very small percentage of tech workers. At Facebook, Google, and Yahoo, that number is a bit less than 2 percent of their respective U.S. workforces; at Apple, it's closer to 7 percent. Many executives and pundits have argued that the educational pipeline remains one of the chief impediments to hiring a more diverse workforce, and that as long as universities aren't recruiting a broader mix of students for STEM degrees, the corporate landscape will suffer accordingly. But black IT entrepreneurs and professionals tell Dice that the problem goes much deeper than simply widening the pipeline; they argue that racial bias, along with lingering impressions of what a 'techie' should look like, loom much larger than any pipeline issue.

Pix the Cat: adventures in the micro-labyrinth ⊟ Take one part...

by 20xx
Paul Brownlee

Gotta get this

Pix the Cat: adventures in the micro-labyrinth ⊟

Take one part Pac-Man: Championship Edition, one part Snake — like, the thing for your old phone — and one part the unimaginable microcosm inside every living creature, and you get Pix the Cat. It’s an arcade maze action game that takes you, much like the Tuck Pendleton machine, ever deeper into Inner Space.

It’s fairly simple to describe: you pick up eggs around a maze, which hatch into ducklings that follow behind you. You then deposit them into designated spaces elsewhere in the maze. Then an exit opens up to the next stage.

However, every little aspect of this simple game is tweaked to make it feel unique. Your combo meter goes up as you collect eggs, but is broken if you deposit a duckling before collecting all of them — or if you run into your own trail of baby ducks. So you have to very carefully plan your route around the stage to pick up all the eggs, then drop them off in the right place. While a timer counts down, of course.

The exit to each new level takes you… inside the level you were just in. Each new level is visible as a tiny rectangle on the screen, and you shrink down to enter the new one. Over the course of a game you’ll go into dozens of levels within levels, feeling more like a continuous, and dangerous, descent than a disconnected series of stages. Some levels even have you leave and go back up to access a different entrance.

image

Oh, and as you build combos and clear stages, the visual style of the game jumps around into all kinds of flashy looks, only adding to the hypnotic effect of being drawn ever deeper into the maze.

On top of the base mode, there’s extra stuff to vary the experience, including a Nostalgia Mode with different rules and a great Steamboat Willie makeover, and a PS4-exclusive multiplayer Arena Mode.

I’m really glad this game is free with PlayStation Plus, because it means I can just tell a lot of you to check it out; despite all the crazy visuals, it’s almost minimalist in its focus, and it won’t take long for you to get into.
