Thing that is a great idea: Debuting a film trailer right before kickoff at Super Bowl XLIX

Universal Pictures dropped Jurassic World's newest ad Sunday, featuring a full minute of vicious dinosaurs, haunting music and Chris Pratt doing his best "I told you so, but I'll still save all of you."

Jurassic World is slated for release on June 12 — exactly 22 years and one day after Steven Spielberg’s park opened.

The 'Madden' video game correctly predicted the Super Bowl outcome

by Max Knoblauch
Madden
Feed-twFeed-fb

It's officially time to start worrying about artificial intelligence.

The 11th annual Super Bowl Madden simulation has proved eerily accurate this year, with the game correctly predicting the final score, 28-24, as well as the final touchdown, a pass from Tom Brady to wide receiver Julian Edelman.

EA Sports' Madden predictions now have correctly guessed the outcome of nine of the last twelve Super Bowls, in what is clearly a sign that there is a severe glitch in the Matrix.

Boris Diaw Buzzer-Beater Attempt Beans Gregg Popovich

by Timothy Burke

It's probably a bad idea to hit your coach in the head with a basketball, but somehow that happened tonight as Boris Diaw's poor attempt at a first-half buzzer-beater instead hit coach Gregg Popovich in the head as Pop headed toward the locker room, no doubt disgusted by the Spurs' poor play. Pop didn't seem to even notice.

Act Fast: You have until 9am Pacific to request an Inbox by Gmail invite

by Quentyn Kennemer

inbox by gmail

If, for some ridiculous reason, you don’t have the easy-to-secure invite to Inbox by Gmail already you’ll be glad to know that another opportunity has opened up… but only if you act fast. Google is giving out invites to anyone who emails them by 9AM Pacific standard time at inbox@google.com (it has to be from a Gmail address).

Inbox, if you don’t know, is Google’s new take on email, a simplified inbox that’ll group like-items and allow you to take action on multiple emails at the same time. It’ll group travel email into the same bundle and automatically add itineraries and such to your calendar, or you can get a look at all of the email you don’t want to see (such as bill alerts) in one fell swoop.

Inbox has features for “snoozing” emails to make them reappear at a later time in case you can’t get to it right away. It’s a pretty big change at first, but many who have gotten used to it exclaim they wouldn’t dare go back to the old way

You can try Inbox without having to give up your traditional Gmail experience so if you don’t end up liking it it’s rather easy to switch back. There are apps for iOS and Android, and you should note that the web version only works in Google Chrome (though Google swears that will change eventually). In the meantime, check out the cool infographic straight ahead to see exactly how people are using Inbox to help regain control of their email.

Microsoft rumored to invest in Cyanogen following promise to take Android from Google

by Quentyn Kennemer
Chanoatx

Interesting

microsoft logo building sign open

Well, how’s this for an early Thursday afternoon headline? According to the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft is planning to invest a nice grip of money into Cyanogen Inc, makers of the most popular custom ROM around.

Microsoft will apparently be a minority investor in a $70 million round of equity investing that would end up placing a valuation on Cyanogen worth hundreds of millions of dollars. As a minority investor Microsoft won’t be the only ones at the table, nor would they be dishing out the most money to infuse this startup with cash.

But what it does bring is a strong message by Microsoft that they’re willing to do whatever they need to help balance out a lopsided race for smartphone software dominance. Why do we say that? Because Cyanogen — just earlier this week — started flexing their own muscle by declaring that they wanted to somehow take Android back from Google.

cyanogenmod logo 5

“I’m the CEO of Cyanogen. We’re attempting to take Android away from Google,” exclaimed Kirk McMaster in front of a crowd of press at a San Francisco event earlier this week. You might be wondering how it’d be possible for Cyanogen to do that considering Google owns Android, but it’s important to understand what he means.

As it stands, Android is open source, and its source code can be freely downloaded by anyone who so chooses. That likely won’t change anytime soon as Google has kept its long-standing promise to keep Android open and free.

android-church-building-44

But it’s long been accepted that the “sweetest” Android you can get is one with access to the Google Play Store, YouTube, Google Search and all of the other key Google services at the ready. The problem is Google limits (legal) access to these services to those willing to put up with restrictive licensing agreements, and CyanogenMod doesn’t like that.

While they’ve admitted their bread and butter has been and most likely always will be Android, their hope is to be able to build an ecosystem for it that’s more open-ended and free than the one Google maintains. The difficulty of such a task is sure to be high and they won’t be able to do it alone, which certainly explains the need to get the likes of Microsoft and supposedly Amazon on board.

Cyanogen — whose custom ROM McMaster says has been installed on over 50 million devices to date — does have enough clout to make such a bold move, but questions have to transform after today’s report: what’s Microsoft’s end-game in this? Are they genuinely interested in creating a better ecosystem for Android or do they simply want to help fatten up a talented development house to potentially swallow up later on?

It would be surprising to see the latter situation take place considering Cyanogen is said to have turned down an offer from Google that would have valuated themselves at $1 billion, though the company’s newly-revealed motive might explain why they made that tough decision. One thing’s for sure, though: if Cyanogen made a big enough case to get a major player like Microsoft interested then they certainly must have a strong plan in place to make this happen.

New footage reveals GoPro's upcoming HD slow-motion update

GoPro is about to upgrade its slow-mo capabilities

Gizmodo's Brent Rose posted this first look, above, at an upcoming firmware update for the GoPro Hero4 that will allow for 240 frames-per-second slow motion in high definition.

According to the tech news site, the video was shot at 240 fps, then slowed down to one-tenth of that speed. While the camera currently allows for slow-motion footage, it's not possible to shoot smooth slow-mo video that's also high definition.

Microsoft Outlook for Android hits Google Play in first public preview release [VIDEO]

by Quentyn Kennemer

More and more Microsoft apps just keep making their way to Google Play. Today sees the migration of Outlook, Microsoft’s email platform for those who aren’t fans of the likes of Gmail and Yahoo. The app — which is in open preview status for Android phones and tablets — will give you easy access to your Microsoft-handled mail, calendars and contacts.

office icon

Microsoft makes a pretty good case for using their official app over a built-in email client. For one, they’ve stuffed a lot of companion services into one app so you won’t have to deal with clunky app interactions or deal with having to leave the email app to transfer an appointment over to your calendar.

A-deeper-look-at-Outlook-for-iOS-Android-8

Another benefit to using the Outlook app is if you use Microsoft’s OneDrive for all your cloud storage needs. Attachments can easily be backed up and saved to your OneDrive account, and on the flipside it’ll be rather easy to attach something that’s sitting in your OneDrive account.

Thankfully Microsoft is opting to embrace the design nuances of each platform they put their app on instead of going with their own user interface, so you’re in for a real Material Design-infused treat. Not too shabby on that one, Microsoft.

On a slightly related note, Microsoft also announced that their Office for Android Tablets apps are officially out of preview status. The apps don’t get any new features as part of that milestone, but hey — it’s stable, it’s free (for basic editing) and it’s just as good as the versions you’ll download on any platform. Can’t ask for much more than that.

Office for Tablets can be downloaded here (Excel), here (PowerPoint) and here (Word), while Outlook users interested in the preview app for Android can head right here.

Professor Indiana Jones won't fall for prankster students' traps

by Laura Vitto

When students at Kent State University realized their professor wears a hat strikingly similar to the one Indiana Jones is known for, they couldn't pass up the opportunity to make the obvious joke, with a little help from the movie's soundtrack. Despite their efforts, the Indy doppelganger refused to react to the prank. Perhaps he spent too long in the Temple of Doom, though those students seem like more annoying sidekicks than Short Round.

Considering Jones is a college professor himself, the prank is more fitting than just the hat. No word yet on whether this professor also happens to be scared of snakes and carry a bullwhip. Read more...

As a GIF lover and creator, I was excited to hear the news, especially considering there really isn't a great place on the web to make quality GIFs in a timely fashion. Imgur's new tool also uploads the files to its website, which takes an additional step out of the process and makes it even easier and faster for people to make GIFs. Read more...

Premium channels like HBO and Showtime are already working on a similar offering, and CBS also offers a streaming service.
