“I am sitting in a room, compressing”

by Admin
Rorrohernan

MUY interesante.

Check out this blog post and the sound file where the author covers the Alvin Lucier avant-garde recording “I am sitting in a room”.

In the original recording, Alvin records his voice in a room onto tape. The recording is played back into the room and recorded again. This is repeated over and over and interestingly it doesn’t take long before resonances in the room and audio system start to jump out and overpower the voice.

In this version he runs the loop through additional mp3 encoding until the voice is lost completely. This is a pretty good demonstration of what is lost when an mp3 converted to wav, then converted to mp3 again. I’ve had to do that before.

I recommend downloading the large file and importing it into your DAW, RX or other editing program.

Here is an excerpt from the 50min clip. The original file was over 100MB so I did not want to rehost it. It’s a flac file so there is no quality loss. First is the original, then first mp3 encoding, then 10th, then another closer to the end.

Music: Great Job, Internet!: Behold the Joffrey Bieber Tumblr, "where fiction’s biggest brat and real life’s biggest brat become one"

Rorrohernan

Oh, interwebs, don't ever change.

This week alone, Justin Bieber has ruthlessly abandoned his pet monkey, unapologetically worn a ski mask and a fedora at the same time, and dodged some cops after the fuzz found some weed on one of his buses, so it makes a lot of sense that the denizens of the Internet have realized that, hey, that Canadian pop star kid kind of looks like King Joffrey from Game Of Thrones. Enter Joffrey Bieber, a new Tumblr “where fiction’s biggest brat and real life’s biggest brat become one.” Watch the baby-faced pop star (pictured actually wearing pants that fit ...

Skyrim concludes production, 'minor updates' to occur as needed

by Alexander Sliwinski
Rorrohernan

Skyrim concludes production with 'minor updates' as needed Bethesda Softworks stated this morning it's "moving on" from Skyrim, which it began working on back in 2006. The developer will continue to provide "minor updates to Skyrim as needed," but don't expect any more official downloadable content.

Skyrim produced three pieces of major DLC: the vampiric Dawnguard, homey Hearthfire and the best-reviewed expansion, Dragonborn. The last included Solstheim, an entirely new region imbued with Lovecraftian tones.

"Parts of our team have also been in pre-production on our next major project, and that game is at the point where it requires the studio's full attention to make it our biggest and best work yet," reads a statement on the company's website.

Fallout 4 is expected "before 2018."

by Ricardo Enrique Galdeano
Rorrohernan

Mega Man 1 OST now available digitally through Capcom

Rorrohernan

Maldito Capcom. Culeros...

Mega Man 1 OST now available digitally through Capcom As the first step in an ongoing effort to make all of the original NES Mega Man soundtracks "legitimately available in the West," the fly jams built into 1987's Mega Man are now available directly through the Capcom Store. The digital pack costs $8.95 and includes 28 different tracks from the game, including such unforgettable hits as "Staff Roll (PS)" and "Capcom Logo."

In case you missed it yesterday, Mega Man composer Manami Matsumae is still in the video game composing business after 26 years, and will be contributing her extensive talents to Shovel Knight's soundtrack, in the form of two original songs.

RetroN 5 and the uncomfortable tension between old and new

by JC Fletcher
Rorrohernan

Yo armaría uno de estos.

RetroN 5 columnThere are at least two schools of thought when it comes to playing retro games. Let's call it two for the sake of argument. On one side, there are people who want all the modern conveniences, both in-game and out: save states, fast-forward and rewind in the games, and wireless controllers, high definition output, and non-finicky hardware to play them with. These are the people who like emulation the most, either through downloading ROMs or official downloadable re-releases of games.

On the other side, there are people who strive for absolute authenticity: real cartridges on real consoles, played on CRT televisions with real controllers. These are the people who, hypothetically speaking, stuff a Twin Famicom in their suitcase while on a business trip to Tokyo.

Somewhere in the middle is this thing.

Music: Great Job, Internet!: Watch Thom Yorke and Nigel Godrich answer a bunch of teen girls' questions about boys

Rorrohernan

Me pareció bastante gracioso esto.

Rookie Mag’s Ask A Grown Man series, where grown-ass men answer real life relationship questions for teen girls, has drawn all sorts of A-list guests, from Paul Rudd to Jimmy Fallon. For the site’s latest edition, though, they’ve pulled some big name musicians: Nigel Godrich and Radiohead’s Thom Yorke. The video—which is, of course, adorable—has the Atoms For Peace duo dishing out truths on love and life, including advice on how to make out with a guy who’s not your boyfriend. Watch and swoon.

by Mariona Rubio Sabatés
Rorrohernan

Nice.

World of Glue, Gurney, Spy Parity, more free in Mumble Indie Bungle

by Jessica Conditt
Rorrohernan

Jajaja. Curioso, curioso...

Artsy games guy Pippin Barr offers six free games in Mumble Indie Bungle Pippin Barr is up to his academic tricks again, this time with a bundle of six new games based on popular indie titles as if they were misheard in conversation: Gurney, World of Glue, Spy Parity, Proteas, 30 Flights of Loathing and Carp Life. These make up the Mumble Indie Bungle, and five of them are completely free, available to download for PC and Mac on Barr's site. Carp Life - a play on IGF mega-winner Cart Life - is extra special, available for $1 or any price over it.

"The idea for the collection, in keeping with the titles, is that it's meant to be this set of crappy indie games that someone perhaps bought for you, mistaking them for the originals," Barr writes on his blog. "So you might excitedly unwrap your new bundle of games to find something like Subpar Meat Boy and Flour (Instead of Super Meat Boy and Flower). Not that I'm using those two titles, though both were originally near the top of the list."

Gurney - a title parody of thatgamecompany's Journey - has players type out religious phrases as they scroll across the bottom of the screen, over the rolling, flickering lights of a hospital ceiling and anxious faces of doctors. The words become jumbled as the player loses consciousness, and Barr warns that eventually the game can cause seizures, so be careful with that one. Or, have fun.

World of Glue is a platforming play on World of Goo, Spy Parity is a jab at Chris Hecker's Spy Party, Proteas is an experiment on Proteus and 30 Flights of Loathing is a step away from Blendo Games' Thirty Flights of Loving.

Check out all the games your aging aunt thinks you're talking about on Barr's site, and buy Carp Life for whatever you think it's worth right here.

Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 out on Mac, RO2 free this weekend

by Sinan Kubba
Rorrohernan

Red Orchestra Ostfront 4145 out on Mac, RO2 free on Steam this weekend Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 finally invades Mac today, over seven years after it stormed Windows and Linux. Tripwire Interactive's tactical first-person shooter was developed from Red Orchestra: Combined Arms, which itself is a conversion mod of Unreal Tournament 2004. Meanwhile, sitting next to the Mac attack is a tempting deal for the game's follow-up.

Not only is 2011's Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad free on Steam this weekend, but permanent capture of the game will endure 85 percent less wallet-based casualties than normal, with the game down from $19.99 to just $2.99. The 85 percent deal also applies across the Red Orchestra franchise deal, which includes Ostfront 41-45, RO2 and its deluxe upgrade. However, since RO2 isn't out for Mac yet, it only applies to Windows users - give it another five or so years, Mac.
