Gender Swapped Burlesque Avengers Assemble! [Cosplay]

by Nicole Wakelin
Tom Wright

What's the most legit are the sketches. She seriously designed this well. This should be a competition in every season of Project Runway.

Heidi: "Designers. You need to design a super-hero costume for high fashion."

Emo Designer: "I just- I just don't know who I am anymore. I don't think this costume is telling the story of me."

c1_Upload

This group cosplay gives us beautiful gender swapped Avengers and then goes one step further by making their costumes ready for a burlesque show. The designs were inspired by the cosplayer who you see here as Hulk. The group includes, Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Thor, and Loki in images captured by Hong-Hanh Phan. They all performed in a Danish con called Genki and even won a prize.

April Art Roundup: Frozen Nouvea, Sherlock Typography, Polygon Star Wars, & More!

by Jen
Tom Wright

Check out the Dr. Who stuff.

Time for this month's roundup of geek art goodness!

First up, Megan Lara knocked it right out of the Disney park with this Frozen art nouveau piece:

"Let Me In" by Megan Lara, 8X10 prints starting at $17

STUNNING.

Er, does a necklace count as fan art? Let's say yes, so I can post this:

Hand Sculpted Cookie Monster necklace by Geek Goddess Creations, $24.99

:D

And by the same artist, this amaaaaazing Totoro box:

Handpainted Totoro Box, $49.99

All the sides are painted, too!

Head over to the Geek Goddess Creations shop for lots more goodies and jewelry, including this gorgeous TARDIS design:

I'm digging the mod look of this Polygon Star Wars Art by The Retro Inc:

Prints are only $5 each, or twelve for $30 - OR you can get them printed on custom pillow covers, starting at $34:

Which reminds me: check out the White Rabbit art pillow I ordered from Society6 last month!

It looks quite Wonder-full on my red leather armchair. ;)

That design is also available as a print, t-shirt, or anything else Society6 makes, though:

"Rabbit Hole," by Medusa Dollmaker, prints start around $17

John's sister is a fellow Sherlock fan, so we picked up this print for her at MegaCon last month:

Sherlock & The Hobbot Typography by Scott W. Smith, 11X17 prints $30

Each print is made up of dialogue from the movies! Pretty cool, right? Here are two more that caught my eye:

Head over to Smith's online store for lots more.

Danielle Soloud Gransaull debuted this new print at MegaCon:

 "DC Derby Girls"

And you can also get it on a t-shirt over at Red Bubble.

I really like Danielle's pin-up style, and her prints start at just $5. Check out this Wonder Woman commission of hers, also from MegaCon:

 Love the soft watercolors.

Head over to Danielle's webstore for more.

I caught up with Joe Rocks again last month, and since he still doesn't have a webstore, I grabbed a few more prints for the give-away board:

That Jareth is wicked.

Joe has an entire series of Star Wars, Doctor Who, and lots more. Head over to his DeviantArt gallery to see the rest!

I found this great TARDIS travel poster over on Etsy:

"Travel by TARDIS" by TheArtEye, 11X17 print $17

The artist, Joshua Graham, also has a fab monochromatic Sherlock design for the same price:

Love it.

And finally, I HAVE to share this squee-worthy Ponies find:
"Flight 101" by Stephanie, aka Steffy-Beff on DeviantArt

I don't think it's available as a print (boo), but Stephanie does have this dainty Fluttershy available as a t-shirt through We Love Fine:

(Yep, the shirt comes in men's sizes, too!)

Head over to her gallery for TONS more pony art, and where you can commission a digital sketch starting at just $5. Sweet!

K, that does it for this month! Now, you know the drill: comment below to be entered to win your choice of prize from my Pinterest Art Giveaway Board! I'll announce the randomly selected winner next week, and yes, I'll ship anywhere!

Both pretty good costumes.

While Boba Fett and Baby Predator duked it out, another battle was taking place elsewhere at WonderCon: Squirrel Girl vs. Lady Deadpool. These two little girls look absolutely amazing, and I love that they’re cosplaying two completely different female characters from comics. No matter who won this fight, they both rock!

Conventions have a lot of awesome sights to offer, but it’s hard to beat kid cosplay. One adorable child stole the show at WonderCon with his insanely adorable Predator costume. When he put the mask on and started walking around, he looked like a tiny bobblehead. It’s the kind of cute you have to look away from because it’s hard to process.

by Lisa Granshaw

Ewok hoodie? With short-sleeves? They just keep getting better and better with this stuff.

Ewok

We never knew we wanted to dress up like an Ewok, but after seeing this tease of a new Her Universe hoodie it’s all we can think about! Her Universe founder Ashley Eckstein teased the new product on Tumblr writing “For all of the Ewok lovers out there, this one’s for you!”

It looks like the photo was part of a shoot for new products that will be coming soon. Eckstein also offered a sneak peek at some cute  Star Wars and Doctor Who-themed dresses. No word on when these might be released, though the #sww2014 tag used on the Ewok post may indicate we’ll see the Star Wars designs appear at next month’s Star Wars weekends.

Star Wars-Themed Funeral Fulfilled Boy’s Final Wish

by Amy Ratcliffe
Tom Wright

That's a cool thing Matt Smith did.

sw funeral 1

Jack Robinson only had four years on this planet. He’s been fighting against an inoperable brain tumor and knowing that he faced a hard road, he made a bucket list that included meeting singer Gary Barlow and and actor Matt Smith. For his final wish, he requested a Star Wars-themed funeral, and his parents Terence and Marie Robinson made it happen when he passed on April 1st of this year.

A Star Wars-themed coffin was transported in a carriage surrounded by stormtroopers, and R2-D2 was at the service. “Binary Sunset” was played by a brass band. Jack Robinson got the unique send off he requested and deserved.

There are a few more heartbreaking photos after the break.

Gamers Over 24 Will Only Get Worse At Games As They Age, Says New Study

by Stefan A. Slater
Tom Wright

Huh.

Gaming-640x426

If you’re a gamer who’s over 24, then I’ve got some bad news for you. According to a new study titled, “Over the Hill at 24,” a  gamer’s “self-initiated response time” within a video game tends to decline once they hit 24. Scientists from Simon Fraser University in British Colombia observed 3,305 StarCraft II players between the ages of 16 and 44, and concluded that a player’s response time and overall speed declines a lot earlier in life than you might expect. But, on a good note, the scientists also found out that a decline in dual-task performance and in-game multitasking doesn’t have any relation to a player’s age, which would explain why my Grandma was so darn good at Sim City. Her ability to raise taxes and put out fires at the same time is legendary.

Artist Sakimi Chan has created illustrations of her vision, and I’ve got to say, some of these Disney ladies look mighty attractive as dudes. A History Of Live-Action DC Superhero Costumes

by Stefan A. Slater

Live-action DC Superhero costumes have come a long way… or at least, most of them have. Reddit user hitokirivader created a unique tribute to the evolution of Superman and Batman costumes—he also included a nice jab to help remind everyone just how little cinematic attention the one true Amazonian princess, Wonder Woman, has received in the last few decades.

The Ins And Outs Of Commissioning A Costume [Featured]

by Amy Ratcliffe
Tom Wright

I made a Flash costume, complete with pipe-cleaner lightning bolts.

I'll make one for you too for $250 minimum.

Crusader costume flying

Do you drool over beautiful costumes and lament the fact that you can’t sew? I’ve been there, but you know what? An inability to sew or a schedule that’s too busy for making intricate ensembles doesn’t mean you can’t cosplay. You can simply commission someone else to make a costume for you. I’ve had a few costumes made, and though each experience is different, the basic steps are the same: choose your dream costume, find a seamstress/seamster, send in measurements, pay, and receive a ready to wear costume. It’s kind of like magic.

If you’ve been thinking about commissioning a costume of your own – maybe an Elsa ensemble? – we’ve broken the process down step by step. Read more about it after the break.

Choosing a Costume

Playing dress up is a blast, but the even more fun part to me is choosing and planning a costume. The options are endless. Chances are you have a good idea of who you want to dress like, but I recommend coming up with three choices. For example, say you really want a Merida costume but the person who you want to make it is out of the proper fabric for her dress. It could happen, and if you don’t want to wait, have a second choice in mind.

This is also the time to decide whether your costume needs to be a screen/comic book accurate replica or just “close enough”. Keep in mind that handcrafting a costume is an art. The more detailed the costume, the more time it takes, and the more expensive it’s going to be. Remember the Elsa costume I mentioned? Her icy blue dress is elaborate and covered in all kinds of bling. If you want a costume exactly matching what you see in Frozen, it’s going to cost serious dollars… which takes me to my next point.

wonder woman costume miala

Custom Wonder Woman costume by MiaLa

Dollars and Cents

Set a budget for the costume. Custom made costumes are not cheap. Period. You’re hiring an artist to make something only for you, and you cannot expect to pay Halloween pop-up shop prices for the costume. You are paying for materials, time, and shipping. Related: the process takes time, often 4+ weeks so plan ahead.

Depending on the specifics, you’re probably going to pay a minimum of $250. If you see a price for a costume that seems too good to be true, it probably is. Etsy and eBay both have plenty of sellers who seem to have workshops grinding out more affordable costumes of mediocre quality. Those are perfectly fine options, just be aware of why the price is low.

Look at photos and materials before committing to a purchase, carefully read about what’s included, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Some sellers offer a payment plan, usually half of the payment up front and the other half upon delivery. It’s okay to ask about that, too.

Finding a Seamstress/Seamster

This is the hardest part of having a costume commissioned, but you only have to go through it once or twice. Once you find a costume-maker you love working with, never let them go. But how to search for someone who will do a great job?

The best way to begin is by asking for recommendations from friends. Know a cool cosplayer? Even if the cosplayer makes his or her own costumes, they might know someone who takes commissions. Know someone in the 501st or Rebel Legions or other costuming groups? They probably have some names for you, too. Heck, ask your social media networks. Getting references is preferred over cold searching on Etsy or eBay. I can personally recommend MiaLa and Castle Corsetry (she made the Crusader costume in the photo at the top of this post).

If you don’t have any luck getting names, head to Etsy. Make a cup of coffee and prepare to spend a lot of time searching and reading reviews. Since you’re investing a fair amount of money in something you’d like to be able to wear in public, it’s important to do your research. Begin by searching for the costume you want, and you’ll probably get a few results. Alternatively, you can search for “custom costumes”. When you look at a shop, make sure they have photos of their costumes on mannequins or people, not just screen shots of the outfit or renderings. Read all available reviews. Obviously, if there are negative comments about poor quality or lack of communication, move along.

Rinse and repeat until you have one to three options. If your ideal costume isn’t listed in your top choices’ shops, send them messages and see if they can make what you’re looking for in the time frame you need it. Compare prices, materials, turnaround time, and make a decision. And yes, even if you don’t need a costume for a specific date, creation time still matters. You don’t want to be waiting for a costume for months and months.

kitty pryde dress sketch

Custom Kitty Pryde-inspired dress by Suckers Apparel

Communication and Expectations

Now that you’ve chosen a costume and a seamstress/seamster, be clear about expectations before you hand over any money. If you want to wear the cosplay at a certain convention, you’ll need it a couple of weeks ahead of the convention to ensure it fits, etc. Give that date to the costume-maker, make sure he or she can have the costume to your doorstep by then, and get their agreement in writing. I’ve had a bad experience with this, and it was important to have a trail of emails and messages with the seller.

Don’t forget to ask about the seller’s policy for alterations. Many will give you one free alteration if you ship it back to them. It’s better to be clear about changes and not need them than to have to scramble if the costume doesn’t fit.

If the costume-maker says they will send you in-progress pictures, hold them to it. You can make sure they’re on track, and hey, they get busy and might need a little reminder from you. It’s simple to check in and nudge without being a jerk. That said, if the costume-maker goes way beyond your agreed deadline and stops communicating with you, you may have to be more forceful. Hopefully you won’t have to deal with such a situation, but remember, you’re paying them for a product and it’s their responsibility to deliver it or to at least keep you updated about delays.

Padme costume

Custom Padmé skirt and gloves by MiaLa

Taking Measurements

For a costume to fit, it has to have precise measurements. This is not an area to guess or to fudge numbers to make them more appealing. If you provide your seamstress/seamster with incorrect measurements, you’re going to end up with a costume that doesn’t fit and no one is going to be happy.

So, how do you get correct measurements? In an ideal situation, the person making the costume lives within driving distance and you can have him or her take the measurements in person. If that’s not possible, get a specific list of measurements needed from the person making the costume and buy tailor’s tape if you don’t already own it. Do not use measuring tape for this; you can get cloth tailor’s tape at any craft store.

Often, costume-makers have illustrations showing where to put the tape and/or detailed instructions on how to take measurements (you can also look up tutorials and videos). Though you can take them yourself, get a friend to help if you can.

Because I’m paranoid, I think you should measure all the necessary places three times. Before you send your numbers off to the costume-maker, proofread it three times as well.

After all the steps are done, you only have to sit back and wait for a lovely costume to arrive on your doorstep. Remember to work on props, get a wig, and wrap up the little touches in the meantime.

Have any questions or more notes? Let us know in the comments.

Blogger Ilana Wiles of Mommy Shorts recently discovered the art of what she calls “baby suiting”. Basically, it’s all about putting a baby in a business suit (or oversized hockey jersey, flight suit, etc.) and taking a picture. On a side note, is it just me, or do the babies end up looking like little reverse bobbleheads? It’s all very endearing to say the least.

Black Cat Stars In “Talk Nerdy” Parody Video

by Amy Ratcliffe
Tom Wright

I watched some more of their stuff, but this seemed like the most "put together".

talk nerdy to me

Screen Team just released a new video, and it’s an amusing parody of Jason Derulo’s “Talk Dirty.” Instead of being inappropriate though, this spoof goes nerdy. Angie, part of Screen Team, stars as Black Cat (and she made the costume). She sneaks around a nerd’s house and steals all his loot, and the lyrics make so many geeky references that they’re hard to keep track of. They even managed to work some Dothraki in.

A Mermaid's Tail

by Jen
Tom Wright

First of all, who knew this existed?

Second of all, this job looks exhausting.

K, time to show off my favorite part of Saturday's Ren Fest: taking pics of my friend Christie.

You ready, Christie?

Yeah, I think she's ready.

Annnnd... DRAMATIC UNVEILING!

Ok, so I've posted pics of Christie as a mermaid in my DragonCon posts before, but there's only so much you can do shooting from above in a hotel swimming pool. She also wasn't in character for those shots, since it was a private pool with almost no one around.

Here, however, Christie - performing as "Kyrin" - has a whole crowd to perform for:

I have to say, the Festival has done a great job setting the scene. This little display shows you which of the three mermaids is currently in the tank:

And the large fenced-in area that corrals the crowd is themed with flowers, hanging seaweed, netting, and shells:

The mermaid tank is just large enough for one adult mermaid - humanely rescued and rehabilitated from the wild, of course. ;)

The mermaids are a free attraction provided by the Festival, but for a "small donation" (most give a dollar), Kyrin will fetch you a sparkly glass stone from the bottom of her tank.

"The Giving of the Stone"

As an added bonus, you may get a little mermaid splash in the process. :) The tips are divided equally among the 5 workers at the Grotto.

Here Kyrin takes a breather - literally - while showing off her tail:

To avoid the inevitable barrage of questions, the crowd is informed that mermaids only communicate in little trills and squeaks, kind of like a dolphin, which is pretty stinking adorable.

Kyrin doesn't need words to connect with the kids, though:

In fact, this is where the real magic happens. Every child that approaches the tank is met face-to-face, and hand-to-hand. Kyrin draws hearts on the glass, plays patty-cake, trills and purrs, and poses for picture after picture with adults and kids alike.

Some are shy, like this little cutie:

Eventually she's coaxed into place by her parents, but you can see she's still a little hesitant:

After the picture the two share a moment, though, and she's all smiles:

SO. CUTE.

When one little boy started pulling faces at her through the glass, Kyrin matched him, sticking out her tongue and crossing her eyes. The boy was completely charmed, and walked away beaming.

I like the way her hair catches the light in this shot.

As small as the tank is, if the mermaids maneuver themselves just so, they can place their tails flat against the glass. Each time Christie did this, she was rushed by a new wave of little girls, all eagerly patting the glass & oohing:

Heck, I almost did, too. That copper & teal tail is gorgeous
(Since I know I'll get asked: it's Mertailor tail.)

Each of the mermaids provides her own costume and accessories, so they're all a bit different. I only caught the tail end [heh] of her set, but here's mermaid Star:

She has a reddish orange tail and some fabulous shell hairpieces:

Each mermaid is out for 45 minutes to an hour at a time, and they do two sets each per day. By the end of their first set their eyes are firey red; keeping your eyes open under water that long really takes its toll! This is a labor of love, though; they are paid, but I know at least in Christie's case that pretty much just covers travel expenses. (She drives over 8 hours each weekend for the show.) She's there because she loves it, and it shows.

I hope you enjoyed your virtual visit to Mermaid's Grotto! If nothing else, I know *I* had fun playing with all these pictures.

Oh, and if you want to see her in person, Christie/Kyrin will be at the Bay Area Ren Fest every weekend except the 22nd & 23rd (because MegaCon!) through April 6th. She also has a Facebook page with her sister Robyn for all their cosplay pics, if you want to keep up with her that way. Tell her I sent you!
