I tried Obenauf's Heavy Duty LP on my motorcycle boots and jacket

by Jason Weisberger

My favorite leather motorcycle jacket was starting to feel stiff and dried out. I decided to try Obenauf's Heavy Duty LP leather treatement.

For years I've used Pecard motorcycle leather dressing on my favorite leather jacket. The jacket has only gotten more and more lovely. The longer I wear it the better and better the hide looks and feels. It gets a ton of compliments when I wear it, and so I maintain it. I also WEAR IT. There had been several thousand miles in summer sun since I'd last fed the leather more than sweat. The elbows were getting harder to bend. Leather gets stiff when dry. I had read a lot about Obenauf's Heavy Duty LP on INTERNET FORUMS so decided I ought to give it a try.

I also had a pair of new motorcycle boots on hand. They came advertised as "greased leather" and while the finish felt fantastic, I could tell the leather needed a lot of softening. It was hard a rock and they hurt my feet. I decided I'd start with the boots and if I trusted Obenauf's THEN I'd move on the treasured motorcycle jacket. I opened the jar and was unsurprised to see it resemble the familiar Pecard. Both are beeswax based but the Obenauf's is slightly thinner and seems to have a lower melting point. Just the heat I freely generate seemed to melt the wax very easily, at room temperature. I put a little on a cloth and the brand new boots absorbed the treatment as quickly as it went on. As the boots were already 'black' they simply absorbed the colorless Obenauf's and acquired a bit more of that matte oiled look, but didn't appreciably darken. I was able to easily work out a few fresh scuffs out of the toecaps as well. They leather didn't soften up but its really going to take a lot more breaking in. This will help and should add some additional waterproofing. I decided it was safe to move on the the jacket.

Compare the image above with this one from 2014 and see how the jacket has aged.

Obenauf's goes on much more smoothly and easily than the Pecard at the same temp. The jacket was done in about half the time I'd usually spend. The leather instantly had almost exactly the same feel as it does about 48 hrs of having put the Pecard on. Obenauf's absorbs and dries far more quickly, and with no buffing. I'd say the jacket had absorbed and dried to wearable about 18 hours after the application. That is pretty amazing, with Pecard I tend to need to wait a week and buff the jacket some.

Obenauf's also doesn't smell like a god damn tannery. The house didn't smell at all, let alone for 3-4 days.

I am not sure how long it'll last. I ususally get 4-6 months out of an application of Pecard. Obenauf looks and feels every bit as nice. The leather has taken on a very satin-y sheen and looks super soft. A lot of texture and character that had faded while dry came back to life. I look forward to showing it off.

We will see how long this application lasts. If it is several months, I think Obenauf is my go leather dressing.

Coca-Cola is launching its first alcoholic beverage

by Rusty Blazenhoff

Coca-Cola will soon be offering a canned cocktail, a "Chu-Hi," to its Japanese market. The Coca-Cola Chu-Hi will be the first beverage in the brand's 130-year history made with alcohol, a popular distilled shochu in this case.

SoraNews24 reports:

Chu-his (also called “sours”) are so popular that they’re sold in cans, regularly bought by customers looking for something sweeter (and also generally cheaper) than beer, while still delivering a similar 4-to-8-percent dose of alcohol. It’s not all that unusual for pubs in Japan to offer “coke-his” on their menus, either, which mix shochu with cola, either Coke or one of its competitors’ substitute products.

Likewise, even in the West Coca-Cola has long been used in cocktails. Still, it’s going to be a little startling to be able to buy official, from-the-factory alcoholic Coca-Cola, which might be why only Japan is going to be graced with the canned adult drinks. “This is [a] modest experiment for a specific slice of our market,” Coca-Cola Japan president Jorge Garduno said in regards to the new venture, which indicates that the Coca-Cola chu-hi probably won’t see release in the rest of the world.

Spotify looks to go public after losing $1.5 billion in 2017

by Taylor Kerns

You’ll soon be able to own a little chunk of Spotify. The streaming music service filed papers with the US Securities and Exchange Commission Wednesday to become a publicly traded company. Shares will trade under the symbol SPOT.

Spotify’s filing is unique in that there’s no specific date when shares will be publicly available or a set price at which they’ll initially be traded. Spotify is working with financial services firm Morgan Stanley to set the initial price of shares based on information provided by the New York Stock Exchange—on private exchanges, shares have traded as high as $132.50.

Spotify is preparing to manufacture its own hardware

by Corbin Davenport

One of the major selling points of smart speakers is integration with third-party services like Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio, and others. However, the companies making the speakers often try to push their own music services over competitors, like how Play Music is the default on the Google Home. Apple has taken things a step farther with its HomePod speaker, which only supports Apple Music.

According to new job listings, Spotify is currently developing its own line of "category defining" hardware products, and is preparing the manufacturing process.

Say hello to a better way to pay, by Google

by Gerardo CapielConsumer Payments

Fast, simple checkout. Easy access to rewards and offers. One spot for purchases, passes, and payment methods. All of these are ways we’ve been working to make paying safer and easier for everyone, everywhere. And you can make the most of these features with the new Google Pay app for Android.

The app, which begins rolling out today, is just one part of everything we’ve got planned. We’re currently working on bringing Google Pay to all Google products, so whether you’re shopping on Chrome or with your Assistant, you’ll have a consistent checkout experience using the cards saved to your Google Account. We’re also working with partners online and in stores, so you’ll see Google Pay on sites, in apps, and at your favorite places around the world.

As we continue to expand to even more devices and services, the new app offers an exciting glimpse of what’s to come. Here’s a closer look.

Helpful info while you shop

Google Pay’s new Home tab gives you the info you need, right when you need it. See your recent purchases, find nearby stores, enjoy easy access to rewards, and get helpful tips.

gpay_udpated2

A new spot for your stuff

The Cards tab is an easy way to keep everything you need at checkout organized and at the ready. It’s where you’ll store your credit and debit cards, loyalty programs, offers, and even that stack of gift cards from last year’s birthday.

gpay_launchx

A faster way to pay your fare

Use Google Pay on transit in cities such as Kiev, London, and Portland (with more coming soon), and stop worrying about your pass once and for all. Now all you need at the turnstile is the device that’s already in your hand.

Tap Success

Google security and encryption

Like all Google products, Google Pay comes with strong security protections to safeguard your account and personal data from security threats. In other words, it’s got your back.

All your favorite features

Longtime Android Pay fans, fear not: the features you love aren’t going away. You’ll still get all your bank’s perks and protections, plus an extra layer of security, since Google Pay doesn’t share your actual card number when you pay in stores. And those online payment forms that take forever to fill out? Just choose Google Pay at checkout and pay with a few quick clicks instead. Learn more at pay.google.com/about/

And more features are coming. If you live in the U.S. or the UK, you’ll be able to use it to send and request money within the next few months. In the meantime, the Wallet app is now called Google Pay Send, and we’re giving it a fresh coat of paint to go with the Google Pay brand.

Want to accept Google Pay for your app, site or business? If you’re a developer, you can work with our processor partners and find all the tools you need on our developer site. And if you’re a business owner building a site for yourself, we’ve partnered with Shopify to make integration even easier.

Ready to try the Google Pay app? Get it on Google Play today.

Chrome now automatically cleans up messy URLs when you share them

by Ryan Whitwam

As you traverse the internet, you will often encounter URLs that have tracking or referral junk tacked on the end. You probably don't want all that garbage included when you share a link, and Chrome recently started taking care of that for you. As of v64, the browser trims off unnecessary strings at the end of URLs.

The URL streamlining happens automatically when you use the Share menu in Chrome (but not Chrome Custom Tabs).

Snake climbs a thin wire fence and then slithers along the top of it

by Rusty Blazenhoff

I've never seen anything like this before and neither had Matt Dunbabin, the owner of the Bangor Vineyard Shed in Dunalley, Tasmania, who shot this now-viral video of a Tasmanian tiger snake slithering along the top of a wire fence.

Dunbabin said there are plenty of snakes in southern Tasmania, but he had never witnessed one climbing a fence, he told The Mercury.

“Certainly not along a strand of wire on the fence, it seemed really bizarre..."

“They’re a part of the landscape that is great to see, and it’s fascinating to see behaviour that you just don’t normally see, it’s quite amazing.”

Incredible footage from 1929 of old folks born in the 1800s

by Rusty Blazenhoff

In 1929, from Maine to California, and spots in-between, some spry senior citizens were interviewed for Movietone newsreels. This video is a compilation of those interviews. Keep in mind when watching that everyone featured was born before the mid-1800s. In the reels, you'll hear them recollect stories from their past and see glimpses of what their life as an elderly person is like.

The footage is from the University of South Carolina's Moving Image Research Collections and was cleaned up and put on YouTube by guy jones.

Here's another one. It features similar interviews but moves into the year 1930. Watch for the farmer at the 2:10 mark, as he doles out some timeless wisdom about "work" vs. "play": https://youtu.be/1cGEe2makeM
