Adobe Brings Premiere Clip, A Far More Approachable Version Of The Desktop Video Editor, To Android

by Bertel King, Jr.

GPlay_AdobeVideo_v01_r02

Adobe Premiere has been around for Macs for about as long as I've been alive, and countless video editors swear by it. A bite-sized version came to iPhones and iPads a year ago. Adobe aimed this product at your everyman, not just folks who know how to maneuver panels around a timeline. Now an Android version of Premiere Clip has made its way into the Play Store.

Premiere Clip, as of version 2.0 for iOS (1.0 for Android), attempts to take some of the difficulty out of video editing by automatically producing a video using your photos and recordings.

[Hands-On] Join Is A Neat Beta Pushbullet Alternative From Joaomgcd

by Rita El Khoury

join-hero

Around the Android corners, joaomgcd is known for his automation tools, most of which rely on heavy Tasker integration and require a level of tinkering that most of us lazy people can't bother with. So when Joao released his new app Join and the featureset seemed to closely mirror Pushbullet's upon close inspection, I was intrigued. Not just because of Pushbullet's latest switch to Pro plans, but because the main selling point of the service was its simplicity.

Hang Jewelry or Other Light Items on a Clothespin Board

by Walter Glenn

Hang Jewelry or Other Light Items on a Clothespin Board

A scrap piece of wood, some clothespins, and some glue are all you need to display and quickly access jewelry or other light items.

This simple project idea from Instructables user MotherDaughterProjects pretty much speaks for itself. Glue the clothespins to a piece of wood, let it dry, and then use it to hang jewelry, spare keys, or pretty much any other lightweight item.

And while the project featured here has a pretty rustic look, there’s nothing stopping you from prettying up the clothespins with some paint or wood stain, or just buying some more attractive clothespins to work with.

How to Send a Fax from Your Smartphone

by Thorin Klosowski

How to Send a Fax from Your Smartphone

While email has certainly destroyed the fax machine, most of us still need to send one, maybe two faxes a year to weird, outdated institutions. Thankfully, you can do it with nothing but your smartphone. Here’s how.

Perhaps because of the rarity of need, smartphone fax apps are a treasure trove of scams, convoluted billing systems, and hidden monthly subscription fees. While you can use an app on your smartphone to send faxes, the app still needs to dial into a telephone network to do so.

Because of that, you’ll probably need to pay at least a little bit of money to send a fax, depending on the number of pages you need to send. We didn’t have any luck finding a reliable app that offered more than a handful of faxes for free. Still, these apps can do a lot to make sending that fax easier.

Send a Fax from Android

How to Send a Fax from Your Smartphone

You have a ton of different options for fax apps on Android, and nearly all of them seem like scams. If you just need to send a couple pages, we like Fax Burner, which allows you to send five pages for free (and receive 25, if that’s your thing). Just open up the app, sign up for an account, then select the pages you want to fax from either your phone’s storage. Fax Burner doesn’t have a built-in scanner, but it does have a photo mode if you want to just snap a picture of a document and hope for the best. Otherwise, you’ll need digital copies of anything you need to fax before you use the app. If you need to fax more than five pages, the price jumps to an annual subscription of $80, so it’s really only useful if you need it all the time or just once.

If you need more than five pages and an $80 subscription is too much, FaxFile seems to be your best choice. It uses a credit system for sending faxes. It’s 10 credits per page, and credit packages are available as in-app purchases for $2.49 per 50 credits (five pages), $10 for 250 (25 pages) credits, and up. You can send PDF, DOC, PNG, or JPG files.

Send a Fax from iOS

How to Send a Fax from Your Smartphone

Depending on what you need to do, we have two different recommendations for faxing on iOS. Like with Android, if you just need to send one fax, one time, we like Fax Burner (Free). FaxBurner lets you send up to five pages for free and receive up to 25 pages per month for free.

For a more rounded approach, we like Tiny Fax (Free). Tiny Fax uses a credit system, where you need to purchase credits and use those to send faxes (for 10 credits per page). You can buy 50 credits (five pages) for $2.99 or 250 (25 pages) for $9.99. Tiny Fax packs in a built-in scanner for scanning in your documents, and a cover letter builder to make a professional looking cover letter in just a couple taps. It also connects with Dropbox, Box, and Google Drive so you can easily grab documents from there.

Once you get the pages you want to fax in order, simply tap the giant start button, pick your pages, enter the fax number, then tap the “Add Cover” page to add a cover letter. Tiny Fax will tell you how many credits you need to send your fax, which you can purchase right in the app. Tap the send button and you’re all done.

11 Actual “Rooms” For Rent In SF That Are More Than Your Midwestern Mortgage

by Sarah Buhr
SFneighborhoods_DA8 Let’s be honest, every apartment for rent in San Francisco is more than the average Midwestern mortgage. An ordinary 35-44-year-old homeowner in the U.S. hands over about $1,073 per month for their house payment, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The SF average for a one bedroom apartment is nearly three times that, at $2965 per month. Of course, the high rent has much to… Read More

This Video Explains How You're Doing Your Laundry Wrong

by Eric Ravenscraft

Doing laundry is one of those tasks we do so often we don’t really question how we might be doing it ineffectively. It’s just habit. This video explains some of the most common ways we do laundry wrong.

As the video explains, most of the ways we do laundry wrong boil down to simple unawareness. We don’t necessarily need to use as much detergent as we do, since more detergent doesn’t make clothes cleaner. You can also wear some clothes multiple times before washing. While it might not feel as fresh, over washing can wear out clothes faster, despite little tangible benefit. Most clothes can handle being worn for more than 12 hours before they’re so filthy they need to be soaked in sudsy water and run through a giant metal heating tumbler, after all. Check out the video for more handy tips.

Android dialers, ranked

by Jerry Hildenbrand

Wait, Jerry. What are you doing? Nobody calls anyone on the phone in these modern times. Get with it!

Easy fam. A lot of us still make calls — try getting hold of a bondsman at 2 a.m. without a phone. And anyway, the people making Android phones include all this stuff, so the least we can do is look at it. Right? Be quiet, you know I'm right. Let me do this without you cracking wise for once.

Anyhoo ... back to dialers. They are more than just a way to enter some digits on a modern smartphone. Sure, you can call up Domino's so you don't have to shut the PlayStation off and make some food, but your people — the ones in your contacts because one day you might want to talk to them — are usually just a tap away because of the way Android dialers tie into your contacts. There are also some settings to make things more (or less) useful, and everyone wants a call log so they can keep track of who they called and who called them. Be quiet, yes you do.

Now that I've convinced you all that the dialer is one of the most important parts of your Android, let's have a look at how the big five do it.

Google+ Rolls Out Updates To Web Redesign, Including Three Column View And Replying To Comments In Context

by Martim Lobao

hero

The Google+ redesign from last week may look pretty, but it's also missing a lot of features that were available in the classic layout.  This is true of every product revamp or relaunch: there will always be a tradeoff between getting all the bells and whistles of the new version and keeping the things you're used to on the old one. There's a whole help page that lays out most of the changes and features that the redesign still lacks, ranging from the simplification of profile pages to the (temporary) removal of polls from the web version.

Google 'right to be forgotten' requests keep piling up

by Adi Robertson

Europe's "right to be forgotten" rules remain a growing issue for Google. Today, the company released its twice-yearly transparency report, detailing the requests it's received for copyright takedowns, user data, and the removal of search results that point to inadequate or irrelevant information about a European citizen. Since the policy was put into place last May, Google reports that it's received 348,085 total requests to remove links, covering a total of 1,234,092 URLs. Around 42 percent of the links (excluding cases that are still pending) ended up being removed.

These results represent a relatively steady increase since mid-2015, when Google last provided an update on link removals. In July, the company reported receiving around...

Don't Launder Foam Pillows, Spot Clean Them Only

by Melanie Pinola

Don't Launder Foam Pillows, Spot Clean Them Only

Washing your pillows in the washing machine can make them look like new again and not yellow. While we’ve advocated properly laundering your pillows before, this does not apply to foam pillows.

Good Housekeeping explains that to clean foam pillows, you should instead vacuum them or tumble them in the dryer on the air-only cycle to remove dust. Spot-clean any soiled areas and let air dry. Also:

Some foam pillows include instructions for hand washing. If you choose to follow them, be very gentle. Wet foam is heavy and tears easily. To help pillows stay cleaner longer, use liners under your pillowcases and wash them monthly.

The above advice is contrary to some advice over at Deadspin, but it might depend on the type of foam pillow you have. When in doubt, just spot clean because foam pillows crumble apart pretty easily.

Amazon Resets an Unknown Number of Passwords Due to Leak

by Thorin Klosowski

Amazon Resets an Unknown Number of Passwords Due to Leak

If you received an email from Amazon today saying your password has been reset, you’re not the only one. ZDNet is reporting that a number of people were notified by Amazon that their password has been reset due to unidentified reasons.

Based on emails from a number of ZDNet readers it sounds like Amazon’s taking a precautionary approach to a possible leak. Amazon’s not saying exactly what the issue was and hasn’t responded to media requests, but ZDNet says the emails clarify that Amazon has no reason to think a third party got their hands on any passwords:

In the email, Amazon said it “recently discovered that your [Amazon] password may have been improperly stored on your device or transmitted to Amazon in a way that could potentially expose it to a third party.”

It adds: “We have corrected the issue to prevent this exposure.” The email said it has “no reason” to believe passwords were improperly disclosed to a third party but issued a temporary password out of an “abundance of caution.”

So, if you got that email, be sure to change your password now. If you didn’t and you use a password manager, now’s probably as good a time as any to change your Amazon password just to stay on the safe side (and make sure that password isn’t used elsewhere). With all that holiday shopping going on this week, now’s also an especially good time to enable Amazon’s new two-step authentication.

Why we enjoy stroking animals and popping bubblewrap

by Jamie Flook

pals

In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, one of the central characters is Lennie, a man with some form of mental development disability who enjoys petting mice and puppies. Only he enjoys it so much he can’t stop and often ends up squashing them literally to death.

The thing is, evidence suggests that the mice and puppies were probably enjoying the petting before Lennie’s fat fingers squashed them. In 2013 researchers from the California Institute of Technology published the results of a study done on mice that showed there is a specific type of sensory cell in skin that responds to careful stroking. The lead researcher on the study suggested we could one day have a skin lotion that makes us feel better.

It’s all very well that mice enjoy being stroked, but why did Lennie -- and why do many other people -- derive pleasure from stroking soft animals? Numerous research studies suggest that during stroking, receptors in the skin send signals to various parts of the brain. This can be measured using MRI scans of the brain during stroking that show increased neuronal activity associated with increased blood flow. The affected areas of the brain light up even when the person involved is unconscious.

I think Lennie should have been given a stress ball or something to occupy him, although I’ve no idea if it would have been a sufficient alternative to petting mice. Sometimes such toys are not always what they seem: https://youtu.be/6BL_vxrGyoU

As we know, there are plenty of materials that are lovely to touch. Silk, velvet, and polar fleece to name but a few. What factors affect whether or not our skin receptors will respond positively to such materials? I contacted Marilyn DeLong, a professor of apparel studies at the University of Minnesota. I wondered if personality might play a small part in how people respond to touching certain materials.

“Of course personality plays a part in how people respond to touching materials" she said. "When you have interest in touching, your prior experience in touching similar or different materials, your response to touching various materials -- are all involved.”

I was racking my brain, probably firing off all kinds of neuronal chaos, trying to think of other factors that might affect our reactions to touching materials. I was thinking about how people touch materials - for example, gently and slowly stroking materials as opposed to rubbing them quickly. I asked DeLong if this would have much effect on how people feel about a material?

“How people touch materials is critical. There are more ways to touch than fast and slow, however. In addition to stroking, a designer would likely pick up a material and squeeze gently to learn about its resiliency, lift it up and move it to determine drape, examine it visually for its perceptible tactile qualities, for example. Experience plays a large role in touch - experience is a good teacher and can result in shortcuts in the process of touching. One learns quickly that a material that feels soft upon first encounter could become scratchy and result in discomfort over time.”

When one thinks about the materials that feel nice to the touch, plastic would probably not make many people’s lists. However there is one plastic product that engages many of us in very pleasurable touching: that lovely stuff known as bubblewrap.

Why do so many people feel a sense of satisfaction when popping bubblewrap? Yes, it feels squidgy and makes a small bursting noise of air when the bubble is popped, but what is happening within us when we engage in such eccentric behavior? I got in, er, touch with Dr. Tiffany Field of the Touch Research Institute in Miami to briefly touch on the subject. I asked Dr. Field if she had any idea why people derived pleasure or contentment from popping bubblewrap or stroking animals.

“Both those activities involve stimulation of pressure receptors under the skin which leads to a relaxation state, e.g. slower heart rate and decreased stress hormones and the feedback from these activities is also pleasurable - the popping sound of the bubblewrap and the pleasurable sounds from the animal.”

In 1992, psychology Professor Kathleen M. Dillon published a paper on her study about why people enjoy popping bubblewrap. She hypothesized that it may have something to do with your fingers releasing muscle tension when engaging in bubblewrap popping. She also noted in her paper that the ancient Greeks used to carry "worrybeads" (small smooth-surfaced stones or pieces of amber or jade) around with them to enjoy the calming effects of stroking them.

I also asked Dr. Field for her opinion on why evolution has resulted in many of us deriving pleasure from popping bubblewrap, stroking soft furry animals, velvet. etc? I haven’t covered human-to-human touch here because I feel the benefits are more obvious but Dr. Field alluded to it in her answer: “In our "no touch" culture we find touch experiences as substitutes for human-to-human touch.”

The central theme of Of Mice and Men is loneliness, so in light of what Dr. Field says, we can probably conclude that this at least partially explains why Lennie enjoyed petting mice so much. However, if his traveling partner George had bothered to take the time to invent bubblewrap, he might have saved Lennie and his animals a whole world of trouble. It turns out that there is evidence to suggest that cute animals make some people feel aggressive. At least that’s according to two psychology graduates of Yale University in this paper. They found that if you show pictures of cute animals to people while they are popping bubblewrap, the subjects end up popping significantly more bubbles. I found out about this study via this site, which also features a photo of a teacup dog which is so cute, you might want to bite your screen.

Don’t open it, I’m warning you.

Insulin Pill is coming

by Om Malik

Researchers at University of California, Santa Barbara have developed a new way to deliver insulin to diabetics — by a pill, instead of injecting oneself with Insulin, usually in the stomach. Over 29 million Americans have diabetes. As a diabetic, this is a great development, though I personally have found that restraint and quality of diet is a good way to minimize dependence on Insulin. Give the Gift of Fitness With These Workout Tools and Gadgets

by Beth Skwarecki and Stephanie Lee on Vitals, shared by Andy Orin to Lifehacker

Give the Gift of Fitness With These Workout Tools and Gadgets

Whether you’re hitting the gym, the trails, or the road, a few well-chosen accessories can make the difference between an okay workout and a really awesome one. Here are some of our favorite gifts for the jock in your life.

Umoro Shaker Bottle

Chugging a protein shake or two is an easy and convenient way to hit your protein needs as an active individual. Originally conceived as a Kickstarter project, the Umoro shaker bottle ($29) levels up this convenience with features that tick off several crucial checkboxes, including: being leak-proof and durable, having a snazzy look, and—here’s the coolest part—having a hidden compartment that holds your protein powder (or any other special drink mix). That means you don’t have to mix your powder until you’re ready, at which point you press a button at the top of the lid; which then drops the shaker ball and powder into the water. Fancy!

CRON-O-Meter Food Tracker App

Give the Gift of Fitness With These Workout Tools and Gadgets

We’re big on the idea of keeping a food diary or tracking your food for a more accurate picture of your eating habits, and greater weight loss success in general. At first glance, CRON-O-Meter can be on the pricier side for an app ($2.99 on iOS and Android), which might make it less appealing in comparison to other free apps like MyFitnessPal. We prefer CRON-O-Meter, however, for its cleaner interface and greater customizability, and the fact that it offers a prettier overview of both macronutrients and micronutrients.

Jaybird Bluetooth X2 Earbuds

Give the Gift of Fitness With These Workout Tools and Gadgets

A lot of us love rocking out to our favorite songs for a better workout, but the last thing we need is to have the cord getting in the way or earbuds falling out right before that sick bass drop. While there are a number of sport-specific earbuds, Jaybird Bluetooth X2 earbuds ($180) knock it out of the park with a combination of quality sound, earbud design that helps them stay put in your ears (no matter the size), and Bluetooth.

http://www.amazon.com/Jaybird-Sport-...

Road ID Wristband

Give the Gift of Fitness With These Workout Tools and Gadgets

If you get a little uneasy when your loved one goes mountain biking where they could break their neck, or running on the shoulder of busy roads, you can put your mind at ease just a teensy bit with a Road ID ($20 and up). This wristband can hold a ton of information for emergency workers, either on the band’s tag (mine has my name, emergency contact numbers, and some medical info) or via an access code that leads to information on the Road ID web site. There is also a gift card option, since the daredevil jogger in your life will probably want to customize the band herself.

RooSport Magnetic Pocket

Give the Gift of Fitness With These Workout Tools and Gadgets

If there’s anything more frustrating than running pants with no pockets, it’s running pants with slightly-too-small pockets. Instead, stuff your phone, keys, and snacks into a RooSport ($27), which attaches to your clothes with a magnetic clip. It’s like a fanny pack’s cooler cousin: Since it rides just inside your waistband, it doesn’t bounce; and thanks to the clip you don’t have to fuss with a belt to hold it up.

http://smile.amazon.com/RooSport-2-0-M...

Exolite Sonic Musical Earmuffs

Give the Gift of Fitness With These Workout Tools and Gadgets

Jack Frost may be cute when he nips at your nose, but we’re more worried about your ears. It’s hard to keep them warm while enjoying your tunes, but the Exolite Sonic Ear Warmer from 180s ($35) has you covered. They’re warm and fleecy, with a pocket you can tuck over the top of your ears to keep the headphones in place while you’re rocking out to “Don’t Stop Me Now.”

http://smile.amazon.com/180s-Exolite-S...

Smartwool PhD Run Socks

Give the Gift of Fitness With These Workout Tools and Gadgets

Just what everyone wants: socks for Christmas. Hear me out—Smartwool socks ($18, men’s and women’s) are warm and soft, never itchy, and the compression around the instep keeps the socks perfectly in place. They fit so well, in fact, that even the blister-prone among us can cover mile after mile with no ill effects. Anybody who’s used to buying their socks by the six-pack will have a hard time dropping the cash on these bad boys, but surprise them with a pair and they’ll be a convert. Take your pick of styles and cushioning levels: the thinnest ones are great for warm-weather runs, while a thicker pair that covers the ankle is perfect for blizzard conditions.

An Army colonel is in trouble for complaining that a $500k gas station cost $43 million to build

by Mark Frauenfelder

CNG-Station

Army Col. John Hope blew the whistle on a task force that spent $43 million to build a useless gas station in Afghanistan. The Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction says the useless gas station should have cost about $500,000. As a result of pointing out the doubly wasteful project, Hope has “been singled out for retaliation and retribution” for “speaking truth,” said Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) in a letter to Defense Secretary Ashton Carter.

The gas station is useless because it supplies natural gas to cars that have been converted to run on natural gas. But there are hardly any cars that run on natural gas in Afghanistan, and the cost to convert a car to run on natural gas is $700. The average annual income in Afghanistan is $690, according to the Washington Post.

More from the Washington Post:

The high cost of the gas station has angered many in Congress. Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) has scheduled a hearing on it for next month. And Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) said it was one of the worst cases of wasteful spending that she has ever seen.

“There are few things in this job that literally make my jaw drop,” she said in a statement. “But of all the examples of wasteful projects in Iraq and Afghanistan that the Pentagon began prior to our wartime contracting reforms, this genuinely shocked me.”

The contractor, Central Asian Engineering Construction Company, originally bid $3 million to build the gas station, which is already an order of magnitude too much to charge. How they ended up charging $43 million is a mystery. I wonder who owns Central Asian Engineering Construction Company?

What a great day for Jordan and Jordanians! Thanks to Google Street View, we can now share the rich, proud and varied history of our country with anyone who has an Internet connection. With more than 30 historical sites available to explore virtually, people all over the world now have a window into our beautiful Kingdom in the heart of the Middle East.

Throughout the ages, ancient civilizations have left their footprints in Jordan. Reminders of the Silk Road which linked the regions of the world in commerce. Ancient cities, such as the Romans’ Jerash and the Nabateans’ Petra. Significant religious sites, like Mount Nebo and the River Jordan. And, to this day, we continue to discover such footprints.

With Google Street View, would-be visitors, or those just curious to learn more about our ancient lands, can explore Jordan’s unique historical heritage online. That’s one of the reasons I love this technology. Not only does it connect millions of people from all corners of the world, it provides a lens on the past. And when we understand more about each other’s stories and cultures and histories, we realize that we are more alike than we are different. That’s why we must preserve these treasures for future generations. They’re a doorway to our shared narrative.

To this day, after too many trips to count, Jordan’s ancient archeological site, the Rose-Red city of Petra, still fills me with awe. Concealed in majestic mountain gorges, visitors can wander through the entire city of Petra, imagining what life was like in the thriving trading center and capital of the Nabataean kingdom. Carved by hand into vibrant red, white and pink sandstone cliffs, it has, miraculously, survived earthquakes to withstand the test of time. Film buffs might recognize it from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade when Harrison Ford and Sean Connery joined forces in their quest to find the Holy Grail. Now, you can step back in time and take a narrated tour of this hidden gem, exploring the tombs, sites and amphitheater that span an area the size of lower Manhattan.

Jerash is the second most visited site outside Petra. It’s considered one of the best preserved examples of Roman architecture outside Italy. With one click, you can stroll through its ruins, walk its streets, sing in its theaters and contemplate life in its baths and temples. Before you leave, remember to send a message through the city’s ancient whispering columns!

Mount Nebo, located 10 km west of the Roman Byzantine town of Madaba, is one of the most revered holy sites in Jordan. While you’re close to Madaba, step into its historic church to view the Madaba Mosaic Map, the oldest known geographic floor mosaic in art history.

The Madaba Mosaic Map, created in 6th century AD, originally contained more than 2 million tesserae!

What could be more relaxing than a float in the world’s saltiest waters? A visit to the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth, is known to be a very therapeutic experience, thanks to its oxygen-rich water and mineral-mud.

While you’re exploring, don’t be surprised if you find a medieval castle right in the middle of the desert. We’ve got many—from crusader castles like Al Karak, to Ajlun Castle built by Saladin, to Umayyad desert castles Qasr Amra and Qasr Al Kharana.

Jordan remains a haven of peace and moderation in the Middle East. So, please, come and visit us. Meet and talk with our warm and hospitable people. Taste our cuisine. Learn some Arabic. Relax in the therapeutic waters of the Dead Sea and the Ma'in Springs. Marvel at the rich colors of Wadi Rum, the spectacular desert backdrop to "The Martian." Walk in the footsteps of our forebears. There’s so much to see and experience.

There’s something for everyone in Jordan. And I couldn’t be happier that now, thanks to Google Maps, we can share our rich cultural heritage with the world. Visit g.co/Jordanhighlights to start your tour. As we say to all our visitors: ahlan wa sahlan. Hello and welcome.

Detour is taking its city-wide virtual tours to more cities soon

by Lauren Goode

It's been nine months since Andrew Mason, the founder and former CEO of Groupon, first launched Detour, an iOS app that offered a collection of walking tours throughout San Francisco. Now he's relaunching it as a packaged tour guide of San Francisco, with a new technology engine that changes the guides as users move around. He's also revealing more details around plans to monetize his latest project.

Detour 2.0 is a "multi-part documentary" of San Francisco, as Mason is calling it, that is downloadable as a $25 walking tour guide. It bundles 10 different walks, some of which offer historical perspective on a neighborhood or tourist attraction and each is narrated by well-known journalists and local activists. Previously, walks were...

EE wants to help customers block intrusive adverts on smartphones

by Rich Edmonds

No one likes adverts, but they do help fund various services and online properties (including Mobile Nations!). While many see them as a way to support the content they enjoy, there are times when adverts can be intrusive or downright obstructive, especially on mobile. UK mobile operator EE is stepping in to lend customers a hand.
