A cashless society as a tool for censorship and social control

by Cory Doctorow

The Atlantic had the excellent idea of commissioning Sarah Jeong, one of the most astute technology commentators on the Internet (previously), to write a series of articles about the social implications of technological change: first up is an excellent, thoughtful, thorough story on the ways that the "cashless society" is being designed to force all transactions through a small number of bottlenecks that states can use to control behavior and censor unpopular political views. Feinstein and Burr’s draft encryption bill would essentially make all encryption illegal

by Devin Coldewey
Capitol Washington A draft version of a bill on encryption sponsored by Senators Burr and Feinstein has made its way to the internet, and it’s exactly as bad a proposed law as everyone worried it would be. The suspiciously (but mercifully) brief Compliance with Court Orders Act, as it stands in draft form, is the technological equivalent of requiring all pigs to fly. Read More

Pirates Frustrated After TV Release Groups Swap .MP4 for .MKV

by Ernesto

crypirateWhile pirates may not appear to be the most organized people, the groups that make up the top of the piracy pyramid abide by strict rules.

Every so often they agree on a new set of standards, which determine what a proper release should look like. Most recently, new changes were announced for TV show releases, and these are set to go into effect this coming weekend.

The new rules are announced in lengthy documents, one for HD and one for SD TV-releases.

“Since the last revision of this document in 2012, TV-X264-SD has grown and become a major section that many people contribute to and depend on. This new revision aims to update the standards from 2012 to standards suitable for 2016 and the future,” the intro to the SD version reads.

The rules are intended for Scene groups only. These groups don’t share their work directly to the public, but between themselves on so-called “topsites”. However, most of the time their releases are also the source of TV-shows that end up being shared on public pirate sites.

This means that hundreds of million of people around the world will be affected by the changes, albeit indirectly.

For the most part the rules deal with technicalities regarding release formatting, tagging and various audio, subtitle and video settings. These changes are hardly noticeable to outsiders, except for the “container” part.

mkvcontainer

Instead of using .MP4 as the file format, all releases will be .MKV moving forward. This is the Matroska container which has been the standard for HD releases in recent years.

Some groups have already made the switch over the past few days, causing confusion among BitTorrent users.

“SUDDENLY everything (well many things) is MKV instead of MP4,” one downloader writes, adding “There is no way a way a whole bunch of encoders woke up today and suddenly decided to use MKV instead of MP4. Does anybody have any idea Whats going on?”

mkvlogo Others complain about not being able to watch MKV files on their video players, or branding MKV as inferior.

“All I can figure is that since things were just fine the way they were, a couple of people decided to screw everything up for everyone else,” another frustrated TV fan notes.

Several P2P TV-distribution groups, which are not part of the Scene, were also taken by surprise. However, TorrentFreak is informed that they won’t convert their releases to MP4, as some people have recommended.

Instead, the ETTV group advises TV-show downloaders to convert the videos to MP4 themselves if they want, pointing them to the free Rebox tool that can do this in a few seconds.

“SD tv shows will soon be released in mkv containers. If you’re an mp4 fan you can remux the mkv files to mp4 in 2 simple steps in less than 30 seconds with the app link below,” ETTV writes.

ETTVcomment

Interestingly, there were also massive complaints in 2012 when the SD standards changed from .AVI to MP4. At the time some people were literally outraged, vowing to ban certain sites and groups.

Whether we will see a repeat of this backlash will become clear after April 10, when the rules go into effect.

This time around it may not be as bad. Many video players support the MKV format and a lot of downloaders were already familiar with it, since HD shows have been released this way for years.

Why 40 years of official nutritional guidelines prescribed a low-fat diet that promoted heart disease

Eat This Much Brings Automatic Meal Planning to Android

by Alan Henry
Eat This Much Brings Automatic Meal Planning to Android

Android: Eat This Much, the previously mentioned meal planning app that automatically generates menus and shopping lists for you, used to be iOS only. Now it’s available for Android too, and it’s brought some useful new features along for the ride.

http://lifehacker.com/eat-this-much-...

The app still works the way it always has—you can give Eat This Much some basic information on the type of diet you’re trying to follow, whether it’s high protein and low carb, vegetarian, paleo, keto, and so on, and the service will spit out a grocery list and a meal plan for all of your meals over the course of the week. You can even tweak and customize that meal plan (to some degree, premium users get the most control, and more on that in a moment) to swap in and out foods you don’t like, minimize how often certain items are suggested to you, and even add items to your pantry so Eat This Much tries to use what you have before telling you to buy something else.

Since we last mentioned it, the service has added thousands of new recipes, updated its interface, and added branded foods to its database as well so you can eat your favorites or get some of your favorite meals suggested to you when it builds you menu.

The app is still freemium, meaning a ton of great features are available in the free version, and more now than before. For example, some features like blocking specific foods, custom recipes, and so on used to be premium-only, but they’re available to everyone now. Premium users however get the ability to use the weekly planner, which unlocks the option to plan meals for each day of the week, make grocery lists based on your mix and match menus, and set up leftovers so you don’t get a lunch recipe for the day after you make a big meal. Premium subscriptions are $9/mo or $84/yr, and every user gets a free trial so you can see if premium works for you before you pay. Hit the link below to check out the Android app, or just learn more.

Self-driving truck convoy completes its first major journey across Europe

by James Vincent

This morning, a fleet of self-driving trucks arrived in the Dutch port of Maasvlakte, completing a cross-continent journey that organizers say demonstrates the future of transport in Europe. Huawei announces the P9 and P9 Plus with dual Leica cameras

by Phil Nickinson

Huawei is betting a partnership with Leica will help their new cameras stand out in the crowd.

Dual-lens smartphones have been a hot topic over the last couple of months, and Huawei is hot on LG's heels with an impressive pair of new smartphones to show off exactly that. To help drive these selling points home, Huawei has stamped the Leica brand on the back of the phone and offered up some Leica-styled imaging modes in software. Dubbed the P9 and P9 plus, Huawei's new phones aim to demonstrate the company's design and engineering prowess side by side with the ability to do something unique and impactful with smartphone photography.

Huawei has worked hard to position these phones as top-tier devices, and they are priced as such.

The two big focus points for Huawei in announcing the P9 and P9 plus are the evolution of their industrial design and the new partnership seen in the camera. Rather than a brand license like we've seen from other smartphone manufacturers in the past, Leica and Huawei claim a collaborative effort aimed at delivering " an uncompromising commitment to imaging excellence". To deliver this, the P9 and P9 plus offer a pair of 12MP sensors behind Leica SUMMARIT lenses. For the P9, those cameras sit on the other side of a 5.2-inch 1080p display powered by a Kirin 955 and a 3,000 mAh battery. Huawei has split the P9 into two versions, one with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage, and one with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage. The 5.5-inch P9 plus is packing a slightly larger 3,400 mAh battery, and comes only in a 4GB model with 64GB of onboard storage.

Huawei has worked hard to position these phones as top-tier devices, and they are priced as such. The 3GB P9 will be available on April 16th for €599, while the more capable 4GB version will run you €649. If you're looking for the larger P9 plus, Huawei plans to make it available on the same day for €749.

Huawei P9 Debuts in London with Dual Camera Lens, Reinvents Smartphone Photography in Collaboration with Leica

New Huawei Flagship Device Combines Groundbreaking Innovations and Exceptional Design, Setting a New Standard in Smartphone Photography

London – April 6, 2016 – Today at an exclusive launch event at London's Battersea Evolution, Huawei Consumer Business Group unveiled the much anticipated Huawei P9 and P9 Plus. Created in collaboration with Leica, the dual-lens P9 sets a new standard in smartphone photography.

The Huawei P9 is the first smartphone co-engineered with the global iconic brand, Leica Camera AG. The P9's dual-lens camera takes smartphone photography to the next level, allowing people to capture both vivid colors and striking black and white images. Huawei's new B3 Talkband wearable wristband also made its global debut.

A groundbreaking moment for event guests included a first look at an exclusive trailer of the new Huawei P9 TV commercial starring Henry Cavill and Scarlett Johansson, Global Product Ambassadors for the Huawei P9 series. Showcasing the connection between two global stars in Shanghai and Hollywood, the trailer symbolizes the partnership between Huawei and Leica and the intersection of color and black and white. Cavill was joined at the P9 launch by iconic photographers Mary McCartney and David Guttenfelder from National Geographic as well as BBC Global News CEO Jim Egan, Condé Nast Chairman and Chief Executive Jonathan Newhouse, Vogue China Publisher Anita Chang and Huawei UK Board Members Sir Andrew Cahn and Dame Helen Alexander.

"Huawei is excited to give P9 users the best smartphone photography experience by leveraging the unrivalled capabilities of Leica, the leader in the world of imaging for more than 100 years," said Richard Yu, CEO, Huawei Consumer Business Group. "Consumers around the world use their smartphones to take billions of pictures each year, making photography critical to user experience. P9 users can now capture images with unmatched clarity, richness and authenticity, with a masterfully designed and powerful smartphone that looks and feels incredible."

Reinventing Smartphone Photography Integrating the design values and engineering excellence of Huawei and Leica in a smartphone photography system co-engineered by the two companies, the P9 brings together best-in-class hardware and software, from optical lenses, to sensors, to image processing algorithms, empowering users to capture the highest-quality images.

Key to the P9's superlative imaging capabilities is a dual-camera design that fully unleashes the power of Leica's optical lenses, renowned for precision and attention to detail, and subject to the industry's most stringent quality screening requirements. The RGB camera on the P9 specializes in capturing color, while the monochrome camera is outstanding at acquiring picture detail. The two rear cameras of the P9 work in tandem to enable users to create images of superior detail, depth and color. The P9 truly excels in low-light conditions, as the dual-camera design guarantees more light and detail can be captured.

Each picture taken by the P9 carries the unique emotional resonance and timelessness that are the hallmarks of Leica, as users may choose between three film modes: Standard, Vivid Colors and Smooth Colors, depending on their personal preferences. With meticulous calibration of the P9's camera parameters, each film mode faithfully renders the authentic color and style of Leica. By selecting the monochrome mode, P9 users can use their devices as a true monochrome camera to capture powerful and evocative black and white images of superior quality. Deploying Huawei's Hybrid Focus technology, the P9 captures images with superior speed, accuracy and stability. The P9 supports camera focusing based on three methodologies – laser, depth calculation and contrast – and automatically selects the one that yields the best result in any given environment.

The wide-aperture photography feature on the P9 allows users to experiment with innovative visual effects to create unique images and content. The P9 makes it easy to adjust the camera aperture to create bokeh and other depth-of-field effects, while keeping the main object in sharp focus.

"Leica and Huawei share an uncompromising commitment to imaging excellence, and our partnership will put outstanding photography into the hands of more consumers around the world," said Oliver Kaltner, CEO, Leica Camera AG. "We are deepening our collaboration to give users a more optimal smartphone photography experience."

Taking Industrial Design to a Higher Level

The P9 is a masterpiece of state-of the-art industrial design, with the same minimalist design DNA as earlier products in Huawei's acclaimed flagship P-series of premium smartphones. Each P9 device is a perfect construct of superior-grade 2.5D glass and an aerospace-class aluminum, with diamond-cut edges rounded out by carefully balanced curvatures.

The 64GB version of the P9 comes in a stunning and unique Haze Gold finish, setting new industry standards in industrial design, with the use of techniques including brushed hairlines and metal polishing at micron-level precision to create a translucent metal surface. Additionally, the Ceramic White version of the P9 is smoother than the painted bodywork of premium cars, reflecting and refracting light to present different shades of awe-inspiring colors as ambient conditions change.

Power and Performance

The P9 is equipped with the power, connectivity and speed that today's high-end smartphone user expects from Huawei. With a 5.2-inch 1080p display, the P9 is powered by the new Kirin 955 2.5GHz 64-bit ARM-based processor for leading-class mobile performance. The 3,000mAh high-density battery offers P9 users outstanding mobility and battery life.

Huawei is also unveiling the P9 Plus, featuring a 5.5-inch Press Touch display and a larger 3,400mAh battery. The P9 Plus also offers dual-IC Rapid Charge, giving users six hours of talk time after a 10-minute charge.

Leveraging Huawei's industry-leading capabilities in telecommunications, the P9 and P9 Plus offer unrivaled new features including a virtual-triple-antenna architecture, designed for users who need robust and seamless connectivity to cellular and Wi-Fi networks to fully harness the power of the mobile Internet no matter where they are in the world.

The P9 and P9 Plus also protect users' privacy and information security with Huawei's world-leading biometric fingerprint recognition technology. The enhanced fingerprint sensor allows users to personalize and safeguard their devices by significantly lowering the possibility of fraudulent or accidental device access, while also ensuring users can quickly and securely access their smartphone.

Welcome to Mossberg, a weekly commentary and reviews column on The Verge and Re/code by veteran tech journalist Walt Mossberg, now an Executive Editor at The Verge and Editor at Large of Re/code.

A decade ago, the release of a new desktop web browser, or even a significant new version, was a big a deal. Consumers and reviewers eagerly waited for more speed, and for cool new features like tabbed browsing or address-bar searching.

But those days are gone. The last major new cross-platform desktop browser to debut was Google’s Chrome, in 2008, which now leads the market. Web browsing itself has moved mostly to mobile devices, where the typical user employs the platform’s built-in browser: mobile Chrome on many Android phones and...

Shine a Light Below Your Paper Cutter to See Exactly Where the Blade Will Cut

by Eric Ravenscraft
Shine a Light Below Your Paper Cutter to See Exactly Where the Blade Will Cut

Paper cutters are precise tools for slicing paper, with one minor deficiency: You can’t always see where the blade will cut. For some models, you can fix this by shining a light beneath the paper.

As reddit user VolcanoHoliday points out in the photo above, by shining a light below the paper, you can see exactly where the edge of a paper cutter ends and thus where the blade will cut. Unfortunately, this only works on larger paper cutters like this one where the blade drops to cut along the edge. Smaller paper cutters like this one where a smaller blade slides along the paper don’t have a drop off edge that you can shine a light behind. However, if you have to use one of those larger paper cutters regularly, mounting a light could help you be more precise.

More Money Won't Fix Your Financial Problems If Your Habits Suck

by Eric Ravenscraft
More Money Won't Fix Your Financial Problems If Your Habits Suck

Everyone wants more money. More money means less stress, we assume. Except that’s not necessarily the case. If your habits suck, making more money just means you have more to waste.

Personal finance site The Smarter Dollar took a survey of 73 readers and found that 40% said their biggest problem with money was “not having enough of it.” While this is a real problem for many people, the site pointed out that in many cases, not having “enough” money may actually a perception problem:

What exactly is having more money going to bring you? Happiness? Less stress? Pride? “Just having more money” isn’t going to do a damn thing for your happiness and stress level... Want to know how I know? Because I know all of you who responded, and 90% of you make over $50,000 a year.

For reference, the median income in the US is $51,939 as of 2014, though for most states individually, it’s much lower. In fact, $50k is enough to qualify as middle-class in every single state. Of course, everyone’s situation is different—for example, $50k in New York City isn’t going to be a lot, no matter what the median is for the state—but the broader point is that “I don’t have enough money” is just as much of a perception problem as a financial one.

Rather than saying you don’t have “enough” money, The Simpler Dollar suggests taking stock of your situation and finding out what you need. How much money do you make versus your expenses? Where can you reduce your major expenses to increase your savable income. If you’re aiming for a specific lifestyle, how much money will you need to make that work?

Most of us rarely answer these questions, instead pursuing a lifestyle independent of our financial ability to do so. However, once you decide how much life you want to buy, you can determine exactly how much money you actually need. Then you can start solving the problem of making more until you have “enough.”
