Aesop was right: the tortoise can beat the hare

by Nick Statt

Some days it feels like there's no meaning to the world, that things just happen regardless of rhyme or reason and no solace can be found in anything but the hard, cold realities of entropy and our near-inevitable heat death. Welcome to the Monday after a 2016 presidential debate.

And yet these are salvageable times, when videos like this make their way to the internet and prove our capacity for truth and justice remains intact, exemplified by the purest life forms of planet Earth:

Little is known about this race, save for it perhaps occurring somewhere in Thailand over the course of...

Largest US meat processor invests in veggie burgers that ‘bleed'

by Rich McCormick

The United States' largest meat processor is investing money in a company that makes artificial meat products from vegetables. Tyson Foods has announced that it is spending an undisclosed amount to acquire a five percent stake in Beyond Meat, the company behind the Beyond Burger — a fully vegan product that supposedly "bleeds" like a real beef burger.

Bill Gates has also invested in Beyond Meat

The deal is one of the first major investments by a major player in the meat industry into plant-based proteins, and seems to mark an increase in quality of meat replacement and alternative products. "The quality of the Beyond Burger is amazing," Tyson Foods' Monica McGurk told the New York Times. "We think it's a game-changing product that...

Ask This Question to End Your Job Interview on a Good Note

by Andy Orin
Ask This Question to End Your Job Interview on a Good Note

No matter how well your job interview goes, there’s still an awkward moment at the end when you don’t really know if you should continue the conversation or begin your goodbyes. But if you ask a positive question, you can end your interview on a high note.

Over on Medium, Marshall Darr suggests that when you interviewer is wrapping things up and asks if you have any other questions, you may want to pipe up and ask them about their own experience at the prospective company. Darr suggests you ask something along the lives of:

“I was wondering what your best moment so far at (company name here) was?”

It might seem a little cheesy, but you’ll get your potential employer to discuss what they actually value at the company they work for, with the added plus—perhaps—of subconsciously associating you and your interview with a positive memory. It’s a simple question that can make the closing tone of your interview optimistic. And if your interviewer can’t really come up with any positive memory on the spot, well, that’s a new red flag to consider about your potential employer.

Whistleblower docs: Wells Fargo was opening fake accounts in 2005

by Cory Doctorow

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=Bbq9-SJ74_Y

Dennis Hambek was a Wells Fargo branch manager. In 2005, he found Wells Fargo employees creating fake accounts in their customers' names (in order to meeting the company's punishing sales quotas and avoid being blackballed across the industry). He sent a certified letter about the practice in 2006 to Carrie Tolstedt -- the bank exec who oversaw the fraud and retired weeks ahead of the scandal with a $125,000,000 bonus -- and held onto the receipts. Cyanogen gets a new CEO, announces new Modular OS program

by Ben Schoon

A few months ago, following layoffs at the company, we heard that Cyanogen would be pivoting to apps, but CEO Kirk McMaster quickly shot those rumors down, at least for the time being. Today the company has just made a major new announcement, replacing its CEO and moving away from “full-stack” development…

RBS deliberately crushed more than 1,000 healthy UK businesses to seize and sell their assets

by Cory Doctorow

14059902708_07b29d1be5_b

RBS, the bank that UK taxpayers bailed out during the financial crisis, after its reckless speculation drove it to bankruptcy, ran a fake "restructuring unit" that was pitched to business customers as a way of helping them weather the market turmoil, but was actually a loan-sharking operation that cranked up interest rates and imposed high penalties, deliberately driving healthy businesses into bankruptcy so that the bank could snap up their assets (illegally sharing information between business units so that RBS always beat the other bidders) and then selling them off to keep the bank profitable. Silkworms eat nanotubes, spin super-silk

by David Pescovitz

2d213452d0a3b9b020ebc6012b0266

Nanoengineer engineers at Tsinghua University fed silkworms carbon nanotubes or graphene, both of which are approximately 100 times stronger than steel. The silkworms then spun reinforced silk that, according to Chemical & Engineering News, "twice as tough (as regular silk) and can withstand at least 50% higher stress before breaking."

The modified silks conduct electricity, unlike regular silk. Raman spectroscopy and electron microscopy imaging showed that the carbon-enhanced silk fibers had a more ordered crystal structure due to the incorporated nano materials.

Some questions remain. One is exactly how the silkworms incorporate the nanomaterials in their silk. Another is what percentage of the nanomaterials eaten by the worms make it into the silk instead of being excreted or otherwise metabolized.

The Barnacle means no more boots on your wheel

by Kristen Hall-Geisler
The Barnacle The Barnacle is a new way for parking patrols to immobilize vehicles. Instead of using a boot to keep a wheel from moving, officers can slap a Barnacle across the windshield, suction it to the glass, and arm it with a keypad. The Barnacle is a bright yellow 20-pound piece of plastic that sticks to the windshield with 750 pounds of force. The parking enforcement officer only has to pump the… Read More

Google explains the Pixel’s lack of OIS, confirms that EIS will still work with 4K video

by Ben Schoon

Google’s new Pixel devices are impressive, but at $649 and up, it feels like the company skimped on a couple of things. One of the most puzzling things to skip was in the camera. Despite having “the best camera ever on a smartphone,” it still lacks OIS ─ thankfully, a representative from Google has given us some answers on this…

Check out this stunning 4K footage taken with the Pixel XL [Video]

by Ben Schoon

Update 10/11: After being sent the original footage (thanks John), we’ve determined that it was shot on a Panasonic GH4 and not a Pixel XL. We apologize for this error.

Google spent a lot of time talking about the Pixel’s camera in its presentation earlier this week, and a good amount of that time was spent on video. The company has made some bold claims on how good this phone’s camera really is, and now one lucky user has been given a chance to put that camera to the test, and it’s pretty outstanding…

Here's a first look at Microsoft's new Paint app for Windows 10

by Tom Warren

Details on Microsoft's plans to redesign its famous paint app for Windows 10 started leaking over the weekend, and now an early version of the app has appeared online for anyone to download. Microsoft is completely overhauling its Paint app, and the new version is designed to be a Universal Windows app with pen- and touch-friendly features. While a launch video demonstrates all the new 3D objects support, the leaked app appears to have been distributed in May to Microsoft testers.

I've had a chance to test out the new Paint app, and I'm surprised by the speed of the application. Most Universal Windows apps, Office excluded, often fail to demonstrate the potential for the platform and rarely include advanced features that are often found...

Feast your eyes on this new batch of spectacular photos of Mars

by Loren Grush

Thanks to the Indian Space Research Organization and a little help from the Planetary Society, we just got a new batch of spectacular photos of the Red Planet. The images come from the Mars Orbiter, a spacecraft launched by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in 2013. The Mars Orbiter successfully inserted itself into Mars orbit on September 24th, 2014, making ISRO the fourth space agency ever to put a spacecraft into orbit around the Red Planet. Since then, the spacecraft has been gathering images of the Martian surface, as well as studying the planet’s atmosphere and all the nearby space particles.

ISRO released the first year’s worth of data from the Mars Orbiter on September 17th, which you can access here. But as an added...

Poop 101: A beginner’s guide to reading your own poop

by Rachel Becker

The next time you ponder your poop before you flush, one thing to keep in mind is that your feces passed through a lot of important organs on their way out. (And if you don’t take a peek, well, congratulations on your moral superiority, I guess?). So it might be possible that your stool can tell you when there’s something wrong with the squishy internal Rube Goldberg machine that converts food into feces.

Ponder your poop before you flush

I have a lot of questions about what this external nugget of evidence says about the inner workings of my body: is that the shape it’s supposed to be? When did I eat that corn? Why is it blue? (That only happened once.)

The quick and dirty version of the digestion process starts as soon as we take a...

Danny Rand is the ultimate weapon in the first full trailer for Iron Fist

by Kwame Opam

Marvel's Iron Fist hits Netflix in just a few months, but fans still haven't seen much of Danny Rand in action. That changed at New York Comic Con today, where we got our first real look at the power of the Iron Fist. Here, we see Danny return to New York, and learn that he's been trained to become a living weapon. And since he has no trouble punching through walls with his bare hands, that much is clear.

Iron Fist is the fourth Marvel series to hit the streaming network, and the final solo outing before next year's The Defenders. There, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist will team up to take on the supernatural threat growing under New York since Daredevil season one. Judging from the action we've already seen, that...

Should you upgrade to the Google Pixel from the Nexus 5X?

by Marc Lagace

There's a ton of hype surrounding Google's new Pixel, but should you upgrade from last year's Nexus 5X?

If you picked up the Nexus 5X last year, you were likely swayed by one reason or another — appreciation for a smaller size screen versus the Nexus 6P, or simply nostalgia for its Nexus 5 predecessor. You might also enjoy the soft-touch plastic backing which helps you maintain your grip. However, if your experience actually using the phone on a daily basis has been anywhere similar to that of the AC writers who gave their thoughts on the Nexus 5X three months on, you may share their common complaints about inconsistent performance, limited storage space and some questionable moments when using the camera.

But it's a new year, and that means a new phone launch from Google. Unless you've been living under a rock, you know the Nexus name has been replaced by Google's new Pixel line up. Assuming you're interested in upgrading to a phone around the same size as the Nexus 5X, should you get the Pixel to replace it? Let's explore.

Let's first compare the specs:

Category Pixel Nexus 5x
Operating System Android 7.1 with Google UI Android 7.0 Nougat
Display 5-inch 1920x1080
AMOLED

Non-removable
Fingerprint sensor Yes Yes
Dimensions 143.8 x 69.5 x 8.6 mm 147.0 x 72.6 x 7.9 mm
Weight 143 g 136 g

Hardware

As you would expect given the pricing and its late-2016 release, the Pixel offers better specs in nearly every category, and continues that into the overall build quality. The Pixel features an aluminum unibody build with Gorilla Glass 4 on the front, and a panel of glass along the top one-third of the back where the camera, LED flash and fingerprint sensor reside. Compared to the plastic featured in the Nexus 5X build, the Pixel resides in a completely different class. While some may like that the Nexus 5X bucked the trend of an aluminum unibody design as found on the Nexus 6P, there's simply no denying how slick and cool the Pixel is — plus it's also available in three distinct color styles.

The Pixel's hardware and specs reside in a completely different class.

Internally, with the Pixel you get a Snapdragon 821 processor and 4GB of RAM to ensure everything runs smoothly. The Pixel's 5-inch screen is slightly smaller than the 5.2-inch screen found on the Nexus 5X, which means you'll enjoy better pixel density for a crisper viewing experience. When it comes to the camera Google is making a lot of bold claims, and though the hardware is very similar to the Nexus 5X the big change here is going to be overall camera performance and that's a big deal.

Software

Each Pixel will ship running the latest version of Android, version 7.1. The Nexus 5X was one of the first phones to receive the Nougat update, so chances are you've already updated your Nexus to the latest OS.

However, as we've reported earlier there are a number of new features that will remain Pixel exclusives for the forseeable future. This includes the revamped Pixel Launcher. The Pixel and Pixel XL will be the first phones to ship will Google Assistant, which may well prove to be a real gamechanger in the way we interact and use our phones. Pixel users will also get free, unlimited original-quality cloud backup for all your photos and videos via the Google Photos app — and that includes 4K video. And the Pixel phones are the first to be specifically designed and shipped with Google's Daydream VR platform.

The experience on the Pixel won't be too far removed from the Nexus 5X, but there are enough new features here that you may be taking an extra look.

Bottom line

The Pixel is the first phone "Made by Google," and by all accounts will be an amazing device with awesome specs and cool new features you'll want to check out. But on the flip side of all that hype, the Pixel is not cheap. Starting at $649 for the 32GB version and getting as high as $849 if you upgrade to the 128GB of storage and get Google's device protection, the Pixel line up is significantly more expensive than what you paid for your Nexus 5X.

This might price out a portion of the Nexus fan base, but if you're still rocking the Nexus 5X and aren't scared off by the steep price of the Pixel, then it's definitely worthy of your attention, and your hard-earned dollars.

How to set up a Wi-Fi hotspot on an Android phone

by Alex Dobie

How to share your Android phone's mobile data connection with laptops, tablets and other devices.

Setting up a Wi-Fi hotspot is an easy way to share your phone's data connection with another device, like a tablet, Mac or PC. Tethering to your phone over Wi-Fi is often easier than using a cable, and you can have multiple devices connected if need be.

Android has had Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities built in for years now, though depending on your carrier, or the model of phone you have, it may work slightly differently. In this article, we're going to cover the most common options — stock (unmodified) Android, and Samsung Galaxy phones.

NOTE: Tethering can quickly drain your battery, and use a lot of mobile data, so be careful!

On a Nexus 5X or 6P

How to enable Wi-Fi hotspot

  1. Tap the Settings icon in your home screen or app drawer.
  2. Under Wireless & networks, tap More.
  3. Tap Tethering & portable hotspot.
  4. Tap the toggle next to Portable Wi-Fi hotspot.

You'll also find a shortcut in the quick settings area.

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to view notifications.
  2. Swipe down again to see quick settings.
  3. If the Hotspot shortcut isn't already there, tap Edit, then long-press on Hotspot and drag it to the grid of tiles.

How to configure your Wi-Fi hotspot

If it's your first time using the Wi-Fi hotspot feature, you might want to set your own network name and password, or change other settings.

  1. At the Tethering & portable hotspot menu, tap Set up Wi-Fi hotspot.
  2. Here you can enter your network name and password. (Tapping show password often makes it easier to type.)
  3. You can also select the AP Band, though you can usually leave this at the default 2.4GHz. (5GHz sometimes works better in crowded areas with lots of Wi-Fi traffic, but has shorter range.)

Note: You can also disable network security from this menu if you need to, but that's usually a bad idea.

On a Samsung Galaxy S7

How to enable Wi-Fi hotspot

  1. Tap the Settings icon in your home screen or app drawer.
  2. Tap Mobile hotspot and tethering
  3. Tap Mobile hotspot, then hit the toggle at the top of the screen.

You'll also find a shortcut in the quick settings area.

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to view notifications and quick settings.
  2. If you don't see Mobile hotspot, you might need to swipe down again to see all quick settings.
  3. To change the position of quick settings shortcuts, tap EDIT, then drag mobile hotspot to where you want it.

How to configure your Wi-Fi hotspot

If it's your first time using the Wi-Fi hotspot feature, you might want to set your own network name and password, or change other settings.

  1. At the Mobile hotspot menu, tap MORE in the top right corner of the screen.
  2. Tap Timeout settings to choose how long the phone waits before turning off the hotspot, if nothing is connected to it.

  3. Or tap Configure Mobile hotspot to choose your Network name and password (tapping show password often makes it easier to type complex passwords).

Note: You can also disable network security from this menu if you need to, but that's usually a bad idea.

Google is vigorously marketing the Pixel in central London, New York, and around the world [Gallery]

The Luke Cage Playlist

by Eric Ravenscraft
The Luke Cage Playlist

Netflix’s latest Marvel show Luke Cage just dropped and its already a hit. Among the many reasons it’s receiving praise is its killer soundtrack. Very mild spoilers follow.

Music is woven into the very heart of Luke Cage. Each episode title is a reference to a track from East Coast hip hop duo Gang Starr. Several episodes include stage performances intertwined with the episodes themselves, featuring legendary talent like funk/soul singer Charles Bradley, and R&B musician Raphael Saadiq.

One of the most defining musical moments, though, is when Luke Cage encounters Wu-Tang Clan member Method Man (yes, the real one) in a convenience store, while preventing a robbery. Afterwards, Method Man dedicates his new single Bulletproof Love to Luke. That track kicks off the below playlist, curated by Marvel itself, packed with the kind of musical talent that gives Luke Cage the artistic heart at the show’s core.

Welcome to our Featured Playlist series. Each week, we’ll share a new themed playlist, embedded for your convenience! You can copy the track list to your service of choice, or listen right here. Have a sweet playlist of your own? Share it with us in the comments below!
