How Republicans Blocked a Key Obamacare Benefit—Without the Shutdown

by Dave Gilson

With all eyes on congressional Republicans' doomed effort to repeal Obamacare, it's easy to forget that efforts to stymie the law's key provisions are continuing apace at the state level. Specifically, 22 states have decided not to go along with with the Affordable Care Act's provisions for expanding Medicaid coverage to their poorest residents.

Medicaid expansion will kick in next January 1. So far, its uneven rollout is disproportionately affecting minorities, a higher percentage of whom qualify for the federally funded coverage. As the authors of a recent report by the Kaiser Family Foundation explain, "People of color make up the majority of uninsured individuals with incomes below the Medicaid expansion limit in both states moving forward and not moving forward with the expansion at this time." (The 2012 Supreme Court decision that spared Obamacare turned Medicare expansion into a state-by-state decision.)

Under Obamacare, states may offer Medicaid coverage to anyone whose income is at or below 138 percent of the federal poverty line. (The poverty line is currently $11,490 for one person and $19,530 for a family of three.) By that benchmark, 25 million Americans without health insurance are now eligible for expanded Medicare coverage. Of those, 59 percent are people of color.

However, nearly half of the people of color who might enroll in Medicaid live in states that currently are not expanding coverage.

While 47 percent of whites now eligible for the Medicaid expansion live in states that are not increasing coverage, 60 percent of eligible blacks and 53 percent of eligible Hispanics do.

In the states that do not offer the new Medicare coverage, Kaiser predicts that "poor, uninsured adults will not gain a new coverage option and likely remain uninsured."

The 10 Saddest Government Goodbye Notes

by Dana Liebelson

You probably haven't heard, but the US government has shut down as of midnight on Tuesday, and it won't re-open until President Barack Obama and Congress quit bickering over Obamacare. Online, some government agencies appear to be in denial about the shutdown—the US Mint is still tweeting about coin laser imprints, and GOP.gov is running normally. But most of them are shuttering their Twitter feeds and websites, and leaving sad goodbye notes. Without further ado, here are 10 of the most tragic:

1. The NASA's Voyager 2 goes nihilistic.

2. The National Zoo promises that someone's still feeding the animals. But, sorry folks. No pandacam!

3. USA.gov wins the politeness and optimism award.

4. The US Geological Survey doesn't beat around the bush.

5. The Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade informs us that, until his interns come back, small businesses are screwed.

6. US Fish and Wildlife Service leaves duck-stamp enthusiasts hanging.

7. The NSA isn't updating its site, but it's probably still spying on you!

8. The National Archives and Records Administration is basically in chaos.

9. The Government Accountability Office takes the opportunity to remind Americans that it won't be doing any government oversight while the government is shut down.

10. The White House thumbs its nose at Republicans.

6 Risky Gun Storage Products Sold by the NRA

by Eric Wuestewald

This Sunday, the New York Times published an extensive report on children accidentally killed by guns. Most of the tragic examples cited involved kids (almost always boys) coming across an unsecured firearm. As Mother Jones has previously reported, owning a gun has been found to substantially increase the risk of accidental death. Studies have also found that percent 40 percent of homes with guns and kids have at least one unlocked firearm. And an experiment by the American Academy of Pediatrics found that one third of 8- to 12-year-old boys who find a handgun will pull the trigger.

Nevertheless, the National Rifle Association has fought efforts to require safer gun storage. On its website, it even sells various gun storage products that ensure easy access to loaded weapons—without safeguards to protect curious kids (or anyone else). Here are a few:

The NRA Minuteman Concealment Mantel Clock
The NRA Store claims that, "like our revolutionary heroes," this mahogany-stained working clock "conceals an underlying, defensive capability." Simply pulling back on the clock's magnetic front panel allows "quick access" to a gun up to 8 inches long, offering you a "heightened sense of security in your home."

NRA Diversion/Concealment Book Set
These hollowed-out book covers' "elegant spines blend seamlessly with other fine literature" and easily open to store handguns up to 10.5 inches long. They come in two colors: The red set comes with the titles Life and Liberty and The Framework of Freedom. The black set comes with Eternal Vigilance and Rendezvous with Destiny.

NRA Amendment II Peacemaker Wooden Box
With decorations "reminiscent of 19th century Western designs," this pine, birch, and poplar box features images of an American flag, three Peacemaker revolver, and the full text of the Second Amendment on a removable lid covering enough space for a real Peacemaker. The box is recommended for storing a flag, jewelry, documents, or "other items in need of old fashioned American protection" (hint, hint).

NRA Concealed Carry Day Planner
Featuring separate compartments for a handgun and a three-ring binder stocked with calendar pages, this tactical organizer also has lockable zippers—but a lock is not included.

NRA Under the Desk Holster
For those who need a firearm handy while checking email or paying bills, the NRA touts this desk holster as an "an easy way to inconspicuously keep your handgun at arm's length." The elastic holster is designed to "safely and securely" fit any size handgun.

Holster Mate
When combined with the NRA Slide Holster, the Holster Mate® allows you to slip your holster off your belt and onto a metal bracket that fits between your bed's mattress and box spring. A hook-and-loop backing is included to eliminate slippage.

Chris - thought you might find this interesting.

The accusations, made over several years in lawsuits that have been merged into two cases, ask whether Google went too far in collecting user data in Gmail and Street View.

Sydney Home · Virginia Mesiti and Scott Otto Anderson

by Lucy

The Surry Hills apartment of Virginia Mesiti and Scott Otto Anderson, and one year old August.  Vintage Børge Mogensen leather lounge, Poul Jensen Z-Chair, designed for Selig in the 60′s – Scott says ‘I eventually found another one of these chairs to make a pair but Gin made me put it in the studio as she felt we had enough seating already :( ‘Virginia responds –  At the time we counted seating for 35 ppl in our living room!’.  Outside on the balcony, a glimpse of the Totem Hanging Pots by Scott and Virginia’s dear friend Kevina-jo Smith, with Helen Fitzgerald & Lucinda Schreiber.  Iconic Sydney Ferry on George Nelson bench / coffee table.  Rug by Armadillo. Scale model Audi TT on rug – another prop for a shoot.  Photo – Sean Fennessy, production – Lucy Feagins / The Design Files.

Dining area. Vintage Eames chairs bought after they were taken from a tech in the UK undergoing renovation – Scott and Virginia added the new walnut dowel bases here. Vintage standing lamp from Mitchell Road Auctions.  Jean Prouvé dining table, a prop picked up after a shoot last year, Aalto vase – a long time favourite. Artwork on wall behind, from Top Left – Warra Warra (Crocodile Skin) woodblock print by Sandy Pascoe from Elcho Island in Arnhem Land; Alfred Jacobsen 19th C. Danish theatre decorations; Two costume designs for the 1970s Broadway production of Carmen picked up at a New York flea market; Three small watercolours from the Tales series, 2009 by Tara Marynowsky (www.taramarynowsky.com); The Gambler by Dennis Magdich, original airbrushed artwork for 1978 issue of Playboy; Two oil portraits by Kelly Murphy (2007) which were gifts painted in our apartment while she was staying there; Untitled (Bow River) Oil on Aluminium (2011) by Fiona Williams; Mongolian Hat illustration picked up by Virginia in Mongolia in 2007; Bears vs Owls, 2008 by Lucinda Schreiber.  Photo - Sean Fennessy, production – Lucy Feagins / The Design Files.

The giant pencil was a beautifully-crafted prop Scott got built for a video clip he directed for Modular Records – the band got to keep the Walkman and cassette that went with it! Jason (Parotia Wahnesi), oil on linen by friend Julian Meagher, 2011. Wästberg Studio Ilse W08 lamp is a prized possession. Ceramic pots bought from the crazy succulents man who does a garage sale every year down the alley in Redfern. Living room detail.  Old Timers watercolour on paper, 2009 by Tara Marynowsky. Despite seeing some of the most seriously amazing houses every week, I don’t often get envious bout other people’s homes, but for todays’ stupendously cool Sydney apartment I shall make an exception.  I could live here in a heartbeat!  This light-filled two bedroom apartment in Surry Hills is home to Virginia Mesiti, a production designer for film and TV, Scott Otto Anderson, a film director and founding partner at Photoplay Films, and August Otto Anderson, their ‘unemployed one year old’ !  With its amazing location overlooking Prince Alfred Park, unusually generous proportions, and considered edit of ridiculously cool artwork, furniture and collectibles, this pad really is the ultimate home for a creative young family.

Virginia and Scott have been here four and a half years.  The original apartments were converted from an old Mambo warehouse in the mid 1980′s.  Last year Virginia and Scott  also undertook some basic renovations of their own in preparation for August’s arrival, re-working their bathroom, laundry and kitchen, and replacing the floors throughout with a European Oak herringbone parquetry. They also took the opportunity to polish the large octagonal concrete column in the living room, which had previously been covered in layer upon layer of lead paint – what an inspired idea!  It’s amazing how this feature alone adds such brilliant texture and interest to the room.

Now, when you look closely at these pics (and the brilliantly detailed captions – thanks Vigrinia!) you will notice just how considered every single detail here is.  It’s as if the home has been thoughtfully curated for a character, in the same way I guess Virginia would create a carefully considered environment for a film.  From the artwork, many by friends and family, to the painstakingly sourced vintage furniture, and various props from film shoots, every detail here has a history and a story to tell.  Its no surprise Virginia and Scott had a little trouble narrowing down their favourites pieces!

‘Scott has a bit of a thing for lamps and chairs, but the Wästberg lamp and the Poul Jensen Z-Chair are probably the most coveted’ says Virginia. The Z-Chair was something Scott had been in search of for a long time – he finally found one in LA whilst on a job there. ‘It became quite an effort and expense to get it back to Australia but still brings great joy’ says Virginia –  ’the angles and lines are completely unique for its period’.

Of all the artwork on display here, the giant photograph entitled ‘Stereo, 256 Ferguson Drive’ by Katie Breckon is a particular favourite for Scott and Virginia. ‘It’s one in a series of highly detailed, life-size documentations she’s made trying to recover some sense of loss after her father passed away’ says Virginia, a friend of Katie’s.  ’You can see every fingerprint and smear, it’s like you can almost smell the mustiness of Claytons and Old Port cigars.’

The big pencil is another amazing piece that deserves a mention / explanation! (In fact, Lisa and I have been referring to this house for months as ‘The Pencil House’, such is the charm of this amazing oversized detail!).  This beautifully made prop came from a video clip Scott made a few years ago for Modular Records. ‘It’s solid wood, and you really feel like you will be able to write with it (and are disappointed when you discover you can’t)’ says Virginia!

Of course, over and above the material details, it’s the bare bones and amazing proportions of this apartment that really sing.  ’We get the most magnificent morning light, and love the high ceilings and the original steel-framed warehouse windows’ says Virginia.  Another highlight for the whole family is the enviable location, in close proximity to parks, cafes, and both Virginia and Scott’s studios. ’We bought this place when the park opposite was under construction, and since then they’ve done a complete renovation of the pool, tennis and basketball courts’ says Virginia.  ’Now that Prince Alfred Park has finally opened, it’s like having a 20 acre front yard to play in!’

HUGE thanks to Scott and Virginia for generously sharing their home with today, and I must also thank our Sydney pal, the amazing Xanthe Highfield for the tip-off – what a find!

OK.  Deep breaths, people.  The worst kept secret in Melbourne is finally OUT today – we are SO EXCITED to let you know that our ever popular annual event The Design Files Open House will indeed be BACK in 2013, and… for the first time, we’re taking it to SYDNEY!

Yep you heard me.  This year Open House will pop in Melbourne and in Sydney, two weeks apart!  From November 21st – 24th we’ll occupy the most amazing home in Hawthorn, Melbourne, then we’re packing the whole thing up and moving in to another incredible home in Surry Hills, Sydney from Dec 5th – 8th!  Ooh la la.  Things are gonna get a little crazy!

We made a little film to help promote this year’s event – please do watch it below, and share!  Huge thanks to my dear pal, talented filmmaker Jessica Leski, for making this colourful little teaser, and to Melbourne musician Matt Walters for generously allowing the use of his beautiful track ‘Vacant Heart’ to accompany the film.  Must admit, it’s got a lot of ME in it, but it’s only 1.2 minutes long so I hope it’s bearable :)

The Design Files Open House 2013 Promo film!  Directed and edited by Jessica Leski, with music by Matt Walters.  Watch on Vimeo here.

For the uninitiated, I feel I should probably explain.  The Design Files Open House represents the ultimate ‘Australian home’, with an added bonus – everything is for sale!  From bedlinen to books, artwork, furniture and soft furnishings, everything in the house can be purchased on the spot!  This year we have over 70 local designers, artists and makers involved in the event, including 35 new designers / artists who have never participated before. Many will be creating brand new pieces exclusively for the event!

Today you can browse the brand spanking new The Design Files Open House website to see which wonderful brands, designers and artists are involved in this year’s event!  In the coming weeks, we will also upload a selection of product on the website, so you can see some of the original artwork and product we’ll have in store.  I am truly indebted to the incredible team who designed and built this amazing new website for Open House – Jesse Mallon, Adam Gibson and Andy Sargent at SouthSouthWest, and Pete Brundle and Patrick Campbell at PDA.  These guys are not only the most talented team, but are also surely the nicest blokes in town.  THANKYOU SO MUCH guys – you are the absolute BEST EVER, I mean it!

This year we’re thrilled to have five wonderful Major Event Sponsors supporting The Design Files Open House 2013.  Once again we have partnered with our pals at Jardan and MINI to bring the event to life, both of whom have been with us since 2011 – we are so grateful for their ongoing support!  Additionally, for the first time we’re incredibly lucky to have the support of South Australian winery Petaluma, Australia’s leading paint brand Dulux, and iconic Australian lifestyle brand Country Road.  We’ll be working with Country Road to kit out our gorgeous Open House crew with new uniforms!  We’re working with MINI to customise a very special new Mini Paceman for the garage (more news on that soon!).  We’ve devised Four ‘Colours of Open House’ by Dulux, to ensure this year’s homes are filled with fantastic Dulux colour!  And Petaluma will be on hand between 3.00pm and 5.00pm at both events to offer all Open House visitors a complimentary wine tasting in the afternoons.  MASSIVE!   HUGE THANKS to our Major Event Sponsors for their generous support of this project.  We absolutely couldn’t do it without them!

SO, dear readers.  The next 2 months are set to get a little mad around here!  We’ll be ordering and receiving and barcoding stock.  We’ll be working with a handful of our favourite local designers on some exclusive products especially for Open House, and chatting to our artists to commission the perfect artworks for both our Melbourne and Sydney locations.  We’ll be chatting to Market Lane about the coffee set up in our Melbourne garden, and the amazing Cookes Food to dream up the yummiest catering for our opening night and media events.  And we’ll be working with The Project Agency and EVH to spread word of this year’s event far and wide!

But YOU guys have only ONE TASK ahead.  Simply put a note in your diary, and make sure you come visit us, in either (or both!?) locations!

Thankyou ALL for your endless support of this project and everything we dream up!  We can’t wait to get this show on the road, and meet you all in Melbourne and Sydney!

At Home With Jennifer Bewerse

Polka dot bathroom!

Dream living roomWe are happy to welcome Jennifer Bewerse to the blog today to share her lovely home with us!At Home With Jennifer Bewerse via A Beautiful MessAt Home With Jennifer Bewerse"My husband Tim and I live with our chubby cat, Maggie, in our San Diego rental.  It’s a beautiful two-story detached house full of light and is just a short bike ride from the ocean. We have a wonderful landlord (that even lets us paint!) so we count ourselves as super lucky ducks. We spend most of our time in the main living space on the first floor, which includes the living room, dining nook, kitchen, and a half-bathroom. A few of the features that sold us on this rental were the wood floors, nice kitchen (especially for a rental!), and tons of natural light." Little plants in the window Those oversized scrabble pieces are great"Our best projects have come from working together, like the Scrabble tiles hanging in our kitchen. For a while I was obsessed with decorative letters, but Tim thought it was strange and random. As a compromise, he suggested we make an art piece based on Scrabble, one of his favorite board games. I get to enjoy my letters and he gets to enjoy the nostalgia of one of his favorite games—we both love it!" Love the vintage details in this home In love with the large house plant"I would have to say my favorite find in our space is our 1930s Philco Radio. When Tim found it in an antique store on Cape Cod, it was in really bad shape with missing knobs, a ripped grill, and completely ruined electronics. We made it our goal to help the old guy sing again. Tim ordered reproduction knobs online, I replaced the grill with some burlap, and we replaced the speakers together. The best part? We were able to install Bluetooth, so now it can stream music from laptops or iPhones. It’s an especially fun feature for parties – we love surprising our friends when we turn on our vintage radio with our phones ;)" Plants make everything betterLove the dotty wall"As a freelancer, I work from home a lot. Several days of the week you’ll find me nested on our couch typing away on the computer. I also have a little space in the living room where I practice—our living room has nice acoustics and (thankfully) our neighbors love the cello!  Once Tim comes home from work, we spend most evenings together in whatever room fits our mood, whether it’s the living room for a movie night or to listen to records, or the kitchen for a cocktail.

For us, if something isn’t easy to use, it will probably collect dust or create a mess. In fact, if there’s a consistent mess in our home, trying to be neater doesn’t usually make a difference. For a long time jackets and shoes were a constant mess—they didn’t have a designated place, so we tended to throw them wherever. When we finally got a coat rack and a little crate for our shoes it was easy to keep things clean. I guess it’s an obvious solution, but we spent a lot of time trying to be 'more clean' before it dawned on us!" Adorable dining nook"For us, decorating our home has been about balancing style, function, time and money. I’m so grateful Tim has a strong opinion about how we live in our space and that we’ve been able to communicate and find solutions neither of us would have thought of on our own. I can’t begin to describe how happy it makes me when Tim comes home, sinks into our couch and says, 'I love our space…'” Jennifer Bewerse"When we moved into our rental about a year and a half ago it was big, bright, clean and exciting, but also basically a plain beige box without any personality. Initially, I was anxious to 'finish' all the rooms right away, but with a busy life as a freelance cellist that just wasn’t realistic. Instead, we’ve slowly made changes that have worked with our schedules and budget. Patience is paying off with a space that is totally 'us', filled with treasures we'll be able to enjoy for years to come. Slowly bringing in beautiful plants, paint colors, and vintage or second-hand furniture allows us to savor every little improvement."

a modern textile-filled home in Los Angles

by Amy Azzarito

There are more windows than wall space in Sonja Rasula and Jonathan Sager’s home in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Echo Park, which means, no matter where you find yourself standing, you have a view of the trees, the hillside and the sky. During the two years the couple have lived here (with their two dogs, Apollo and Aleister), they worked to fill the space with elements of color, lots of textiles (both new and vintage) as well as with items they’ve collected over their years together. Earlier this year, Sonja started CAMP, a creative business conference that takes place in a summer camp environment and next month she opens her BIG new project, an 18,000 sq ft building in LA’s Arts District called The Unique Space! She’s renovated a historic old factory building to essentially be a huge utopian workspace: it has private offices and studios for rent, there is 3000 sq ft of  co-work space to encourage creativity/innovation/socializing, and the building boasts a kitchen and communal dining area, a resource library, lounge, bar, conference room, rooftop terrace and in 2014, they’ll be adding a photo studio. (There’s even have a fleet of Linus bicycles for the co-work members to use!) Jon is equally as busy as an industrial designer/project manager who works for  The Guild. With all that activity outside the home, Sonja wanted to create a modern yet eclectic space that felt comfortable and relaxing. A big thank you to Laure Joliet for the lovely photographs! -Amy

Image above: We painted the room in Decorator’s White by BEHR. The white chest is from West Elm. I had the sofa custom-made here in Los Angeles by Rosa Beltran, a Los Angeles interior designer who can help anyone make beautiful locally-made furniture.

Image above: Our bedroom is very simple, with white walls and just our bed and two nightstands. Because I love textiles so much, I rotate pillows and blankets every couple months so I get to use them all! That cat pillow was actually my parents from the ’70s and the colorful blanket is another antique find. The mid-century modern style nightstand is actually from West Elm, as is all the bedding (other then the vintage blanket).

cozy fall recipes

I’ve been seeing all kinds of cozy pumpkin-ey goodness going around pinterest lately. Which makes me just a teeny bit homesick to get back to my own kitchen (and my own bed, for that matter)… both of which seem oh so far away right … Go to the recipe...

Claire Rosen’s Striking Portraits of Birds

by Julia Sabot

Claire_Rosen_Photography

Birds of a Feather by NYC-based Claire Rosen, is a portrait series of live birds ranging from the common Parakeet to the exotic Hyacinth Macaw. The birds are posed against complimentary vintage looking wallpaper to encourage optical illusion and visual blending.

At the time Rosen had just finished a series of taxidermy animal still life images for a residency in upstate New York at the Millbrook School. The series, which was photographed on all black, was very dark and she wanted to work on something a bit lighter. She began brainstorming about less traditional background options and came up with the idea to use vintage wallpaper. She gathered inspiration from Victorian Optical Illusion Postcards, hence her blend of bird and background.

Portraits of the Fabulous ‘Sun City Poms’

by Sophie Chapman-Andrews

Todd_Antony_Photography

London-based photographer Todd Antony recently spent some time in Sun City, a retirement city boasting 37,000 residents situated near Phoenix, Arizona, where he came across ‘The Sun City Poms’. They were very happy to be photographed striking their best pose against the immaculate backdrop of their sunny paradise.

Antony says on his blog that spending time with these ladies made him consider how Americans view the aging process; at one end of the spectrum are the child beauty pageants (kids trying to fast-track their years) whilst at the other end are these fabulous pom pom ladies who are successfully and gracefully holding them back.
