A Working Desk For Two & A Dining Table For Six

by Caroline Williamson

A Working Desk For Two & A Dining Table For Six

With the kitchen being the heart of the home, the dining table is a vital piece of furniture. When we’re not eating at it, we’re doing work or the kids are doing homework, so we’re constantly going back and forth between our various needs. However, most dining tables aren’t designed to really work for anything other than eating. Enter the Table for Two. Talk about multifunctional – the Table for Two, designed by Daniel Liss, combines multiple functions into one. It not only acts as a working desk for two people, it’s also a spacious dining table for six.

The tables moveable parts make it easy to switch to other uses. Fold the lids down to make one large surface to dine as a twosome…

Or a whole lot more.

When you need a workspace, flip the lid up to create a divider between the two stations. There’s room to store a power source when needed or hidden away when not in use.

Real Life Instagram by Bruno Ribeiro

Traditional photography with actual cameras has gone way of the handy camera we all have on our smartphones. It also seems we can’t avoid slapping a filter on it via some photo app and sharing it on every social network out there. Instagram is the leader of the pack when it comes to photos, filters, and sharing and London-based Bruno Ribeiro decided to take the idea into the real world with his series of photos called Real Life Instagram. Because we all know how difficult it is to disconnect the digital world from the every day, mundane analog one.

Perth Home · Mark and Christine Baxter and Family

by Lucy

The incredible mid-century WA home of Mark and Christine Baxter and Family, designed by legendary architect Iwan Iwanoff!   The Parker dining table extends to three metres and seats up to 12 for their family get-togethers. The dining chairs are Chiswell, the rug is a Versace pattern, the Italian-designed pendant above is an original fixture and on the table are three Fuga bowls by Sven Palmqvist. Far right, one Mark’s favourite chairs in green – the rare Featherston Cone chair 1955, bought for $25 from a garage sale around the corner. (OMG!!) The artworks on the wall are – left, ‘Carousel of Love’ by Cedric Baxter, top right – Bryant McDiven 1968; bottom centre – a Stormie Mills commission piece painted on back of a drawer, and bottom right – a painting by Alan Baker.  The console in the dining room features (from left) a sculpture cut from a steel girder by Albert Wilson 1974, a Gregory Bonasera piece in black; a white porcelain piece by a WA ceramicist, a Becky Blair work called ‘Night Vision’, an Oiva Toikka Raven, a black and white vase by Paloma Picasso for Villeroy & Boch, a figure sculpture bought for $5 at swap meet.  Photo - Angelita Bonetti, Styling / Production – Anna Flanders.

Painting on console, Night Vision by Becky Blair. An Oiva Toikka Raven (‘bought cheaply at an antique auction because the auctioneer had no idea of its value!’ says Mark). Black and white vase by Paloma Picasso for Villeroy & Boch, a figure sculpture bought for $5 at swap meet.  Photo - Angelita Bonetti, Styling / Production – Anna Flanders.

The formal living room – a homage to Mark’s chair collection! Clockwise from back left – the Elda chair in leather and fibreglass by Joe Colombo 1963, the Rondo chair designed by Gordon Andrews 1956 (famous for being used in Star Wars the movie, while the designer is also famous for designing the Australian currency, says Mark!), Contour Featherston upholstered chairs. The coffee table was designed by a  local WA craftsman in Walliston in the 1970′s. Photo - Angelita Bonetti, Styling / Production – Anna Flanders.

Incredible original decorative brickwork in the TV room.  Plycraft recliner with matching footstool. The artwork above is by Mark’s father, Cedric Baxter and was gifted to his wife Christine by his father as it is her favourite work. The Danish standard lamp was found through the Quokka pages, and the occasional table has an inlay depiction of indigenous Australians and was a unique find in Old Wares in East Fremantle. On the table are a Gambone vase (tall), a Unu vase by Marc Pascal and an Asian tribal head piece of horses. Photo - Angelita Bonetti, Styling / Production – Anna Flanders.

Mark Baxter in his front doorway.  The door is designed specifically for the house – each Ivan Iwanoff house had an individually door designed by the architect. The cabinetry and shelving separates the entrance and the tv room, and stores pieces from Bertil Vallien’s Artist Collection on the top level.  Photo - Angelita Bonetti, Styling / Production – Anna Flanders.

Today we have another seriously incredible mid-century home in WA to share, courtesy of our amazing Perth-based team, Anna Flanders and Angelita Bonetti, who we work with closely to ensure TDF gets its fair share of WA homes!  AMAZING work ladies!

This very special family home belongs to design enthusiasts and avid collectors Mark and Christine Baxter and their thirteen year old daughter Aisha, who bought the property in November 1999.  ’I’m not sure if it was wonderful luck or destiny’ says Mark of their good fortune in finding this unique modernist home, designed in 1969 by revered Bulgarian architect Iwan Iwanoff, who was responsible for a number of incredible homes in Perth at that time.  ’We had been wandering the area, looking for a larger home to start a family, and happened upon this house. We drove past it early in the morning and loved it, and when we arrived for the opening later in the day, we bought it within 15 minutes’.

After moving in, Mark and Christine initially had plans to make some minor changes. ‘We planned to remove a raised section between the breakfast bar and kitchen, to gain more bench space, and remove the overhead cupboards’ says Mark.  However, after living in the house for several months it quickly became apparent why Iwanoff had designed the kitchen in the way that he had.  ’What was I thinking!?’ says Mark!

In fact, after living in the house for several months it became more than apparent to Mark and Christine just how clever Iwanoff was. In 1969, Iwanoff designed the house with air flow vent panels that open in both the front and back. This, along with the open layout of the home allows for constant air flow which keeps the house cool in summer. The house also utilises ceilings made of ‘Stramit’ panels, a pressed fibre material. ‘In 1969 these were used only for commercial sound proofing, but Iwanoff used them as a decorative ceiling finish, as well as efficient insulation – all this in 1969!’ says Mark.

Now retired, Mark is (clearly!) an avid collector of all manner of beautiful things, including Australian furniture/chairs, 60 – 70’s art, Scandinavian glass, stylised bulls and horses, kokeshi dolls and many other objects as you see here! ‘The house is the perfect gallery to display my collection’ says Mark. ‘The only drawback is I run out of wall space to hang my paintings, because of the open plan design of the house!’.

Born into a highly creative family, it seems Mark was always destined for a life surrounded by art and design.  ’My father is an artist/cartoonist, my mother is a dressmaker and incredible cook’ explains Mark. ‘I grew up in the ’60s and ’70s surrounded by Featherston chairs, art, sculpture and pottery. My father drove interesting cars like a Renault Dauphine to the iconic Holden Monaro. I believe that the period between 1955 -1975 produced the most stylish architecture, cars and art’.

Inspired by his creative surroundings and family life, Mark’s collecting started in his early years – he would scour second hand / antique stores every weekend, and rummage thru Swapmeets and garage sales. Then came the dedicated ‘Quokka‘ publication (an online trading post similar to Craig’s List), and these days Mark is a regular browser of eBay and Gumtree.  ’I must admit I have slowed down a lot – I’ve run out of room and the cupboards are full to the brim! Most of my time is now spent sourcing items for other people’ he says.

Unsurprisingly for a collector of this caibre (!), Mark has too many favourite pieces to list succinctly!  His chair collection is particularly treasured, and includes his much loved Featherston cone chair, fortuitously found at a garage sale he was passing one Sunday morning.  He’s also very fond of the Kral Australia plywood and chrome chairs in the TV room, and matching sofa, found as three separate elements over several years, and united by Mark, now a complete set!  (Mark is currently restoring the sofa, its not pictured here).

Mark is also a passionate art collector, with an extensive art and sculpture collection.  His early George Kosturkov sculptures are greatly treasured, significant, he says, because Kosturkov and architect Iwan Iwanoff were great mates. ‘I bought my house from the original owner who was also one of Iwanoff’s Bulgarian friends, and in fact the electrician on all his homes’ says Mark. It’s stories like this that keep Iwanoff’s memory alive in WA, and continue to inspire mid century architecture enthusiasts Australia-wide.  Much like Renee Coleman, whose Iwan Iwanoff home we featured back in July, through living in this beautiful, efficiently designed family home, Mark has developed a deep affection for the complex design elements at play here, and the rich history of Iwanoff’s work.  It’s great to see Iwanoff’s legacy so perfectly preserved here, and layered with the Baxter’s own incredible collection of mid century furniture and design – it couldn’t be in better hands!

HUGE THANKS to Mark, Christina and Aisha for sharing their amazing home with us today!

Formal Loungeroom details.  Amazing Elda chair, artwork above is ‘Thunderbirds’ by Marjorie Bussey (a friend of Mark’s family). The floorstanding lamp is Italian, bought at a market.  Photo - Angelita Bonetti, Styling / Production – Anna Flanders.

The carpet throughout the formal living area is original, installed in 1969! ‘It’s due for replacement’ says Mark, ‘Our dog Gypsy actually gets lost in it! We can’t find her when she lays down into it because they are the same colour!’. The console is an Australian design and features artworks by West Australian artist Guy Grey Smith and Brian McKay, a collection of blue glass pieces are by Bertil Vallien, a blue bird by Oiva Toikka for Iitala; and bottles by Kel Engman for Kosta Boda. The artwork above is ‘Kangaroo Paws’ by English artist Becky Blair from Gadfly Gallery, and a work by Renis Zusters. On the coffee table is John Russell’s Black Velvet coffee set and a low vessel by Melbourne ceramicist Gregory Bonasera.  Photo - Angelita Bonetti, Styling / Production – Anna Flanders.

The red display unit, sitting between the TV Room and formal lounge is a 1928 Bauhaus typewriters desk B21 by Marcel Bruer for Thonet that Mark bought at auction for $5 – he really is the king of second-hand designer finds! The artwork above is an interpretation of a boab tree by Charlene Carrington. ‘I love the boab tree’ says Mark. ‘I also love horses and bulls, so collect the more stylised interpretations of those animals’. The green horse here is Fantoni, and the glass one is by Kosta Boda. The wooden figure Mark found at auction, the Krenit bowls are part of a collection of different colours and the lamp was found at a swap meet. Photo - Angelita Bonetti, Styling / Production – Anna Flanders.

These two chairs are the mirror image of two that Mark’s parents bought when first married. ‘When I was young, I loved them. My parents still have them and one has been bequeathed to me and one to my brother’ says Mark. In the meantime, he collected two for himself, which started his own chair collection. The chairs are both Featherstons – a R152 Contour chair 1951 (left) and TV Chair 1953 (right). Mark made the sidetable – he found the base, then used the end of a wine barrel for the top. In the cabinetry is a collection of Kosta Boda bottles, while the demi-tasse cups and saucers are his wife Christine’s collection.  On the cabinetry, a work by WA sculptor Tony Jones, and a collection of Fantoni ceramic bulls.  Photo - Angelita Bonetti, Styling / Production – Anna Flanders.

Formal lounge looking to TV room.  R152 Contour chair 1951 and TV Chair 1953.  It may come as a surprise to hear that the sofa is from IKEA. True!  However, it is temporary, whilst Mark restores a Kral lounge that will eventually replace it.  Photo - Angelita Bonetti, Styling / Production – Anna Flanders.

A corner in the TV room, situated at the front of the house. The bookcase, filled with Mark’s favourite magazines and auction catalogues, is from IKEA (‘Good design is good design, no matter where it comes from’ says Mark, ‘and IKEA has some great designers working for them’. Also in the bookcase are different coloured Carnaby vases by Holmgaard, and above is a starburst clock found at a garage sale. The chair is by Kral of Melbourne and has a matching sofa that Mark is restoring. The fan on the Danish sidetable is the “Otto” by Sunbeam. Photo - Angelita Bonetti, Styling / Production – Anna Flanders.

The red chair is the Featherston Scape chair. ‘A friend was on holiday in Albany about 12 years ago and he saw it. He knew I wanted one, so bought it for me and delivered it all the way back to me in the back of his car’ laughs Mark.  Photo - Angelita Bonetti, Styling / Production – Anna Flanders.

Gypsy the dog strikes a post in Mark’s home office!  Teak panelling and views over the front garden define Mark’s home office. The desk is by Fred Ward and was originally designed for the National Library in Canberra – Mark found it listed on Gumtree and bought it cheaply. The Danish desk lamp was secured through a swap of some Scandinavian pottery with a good friend, and the Vitra chair was bought at an office furniture auction. Mark started collecting Barbie dolls for his daughter, but couldn’t resist collecting some favourite toys of his own, such as Mario, Captain America, Andy Capp and Astro Boy, which now surround him in the office. He also loves motor racing so collects models of cars driven by his favourite drivers! Photo - Angelita Bonetti, Styling / Production – Anna Flanders.

This hallway leads to the private areas of the home – three bedrooms and a bathroom. A rare Featherston bedroom stool sits against the wall. Artwork above by Majorie Bussey. The hallway is also lined with Mark’s art collection.  Photo - Angelita Bonetti, Styling / Production – Anna Flanders.

George Kosturkov sculpture on the wall of the outdoor seating area.  ’This hung in the back of a second-hand shop for 20 years, then Mark swapped it for a table he no longer wanted.  Many years later, the owner of the shop saw Mark and said he now realised what a great deal Mark got with the swap! However, at the time, George Kosturkov was not readily known.  It pays to do your research!  Photo - Angelita Bonetti, Styling / Production – Anna Flanders.

The garden is a whirl of green, Mark says he is currently redesigning it,so it’s in reconstruction mode!  Mark’s fabulous big sputnik pots line the verandah. Photo – Angelita Bonetti, Styling / Production – Anna Flanders.

Color Combo: Pink, Grey, Black & White

by Theresa Gonzalez
Tifmurray

I like this color combo too - maybe our bedroom?

I generally tend to go with a neutral palette in my home for a more calming effect (which is what I want from my space). But pink always seems to sneak in there. It's weird, because I never wear pink.

THE-WES-ANDERSON-COLLECTION

as most of you know, i am possibly the numero uno Wes Anderson fan. we’re getting married one day, he just doesn’t know it. but i think wes would get me and my quirky ways like nobody else will, so it should just happen pretty organically. once he meets me. anyways — as happens with me when discussing my future husband, i digress. there’s a new book out that is all about my charming wes — The Wes Anderson Collection! the heart of the book is a long interview with wes, his filmography and a guided tour through a true artist’s mind. it’s written by New York Magazine TV critic Matt Zoller Seitz, who shares a behind the scenes look into all of wes anderson’s films, including the royal tenenbaums, The Darjeeling Limited, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Moonrise Kingdom to name a few — as well as his life and career, including unpublished photos, and artwork. too bad we’re not on our honeymoon yet, or those pics might be included in the book, too! i ordered it anyway, and volume two should probably include us for sure. just you wait. oh, and by the way, wes wanted me to let you know — he’s hard a work on a new film, the grand budapest hotel. more on that soon.

A Visit To Urbanspace Interiors

by Marni Katz

looks cool, and in Texas!

A Visit To Urbanspace Interiors

Urbanspace Interiors, a shop and interior design firm in downtown Austin is the subject of this month’s Design Store(y) column. Originally a real estate company founded by Kevin Burns, Urbanspace branched into design when Emily Basham-Hoelscher joined the firm. The airy space showcases a colorful mix of modern furniture, accessories, textiles, and lighting by established and up-and-coming designers.

Why did you pick this city and neighborhood?

There’s nowhere like the urban core of Austin. It has its own individual flavor, personality, and sense of opportunity. The inspiration drawn from having your showroom in the heart of this great city is endless. Our showroom is also housed at the crossroads of a number of vibrant downtown districts. The Whole Foods Market global HQ is across the street, we are a stone’s throw from our gorgeous Lady Bird Lake, and in the center of the best condo and residential neighborhoods of Austin’s urban core. We feel like we are in the perfect place to engage with our community and inspire Austin with modern design.

A Visit To Urbanspace Interiors in interior design home furnishings Category

Where did you get the name for the store?

We opened the furniture store in 2009 under a different brand, but in 2011 we decided to officially merge with the Urbanspace brand that was established a decade prior. We realized what an incredible opportunity we had to combine the interiors and furniture business with our original real estate business. We are able to take our clients from securing the perfect place, to customizing their space, to helping them embrace living in our amazing downtown neighborhood.

Has it changed much since then? How?

Our showroom is always evolving, and we are constantly working to find new lines for our collection; pieces that are new to Austin, to Texas, and sometimes to the USA. Recently, we have introduced a number of incredibly talented up-and-coming New York City- and Austin-based designers and artisans. Overall, we believe that modern design should be eclectic, warm, and speak to the many parts of your personality. We pair high-end European design with pieces from local artists. We want to keep it fresh and not only cherish long-standing design brands, but help uncover what’s around the corner in the design world.

What’s one of the challenges you’ve had with the business?

We’re a very small team, which is good in that we are incredibly passionate and devoted to what we do and what we bring to the marketplace. However, it’s challenging to be pulled in a number of different directions at once, between the showroom, website, and interior design projects. It’s not an unusual day to be working on new blog posts and website improvements, a residential kitchen remodel, a new restaurant design, meeting with potential new lines for the showroom, and hosting a team of architects and designers for happy hour in our space. All in one day! Juggling everything can be a challenge for us, but each day is different and never boring!

What other stores have you worked in before opening this one?

I worked in retail shops while I was in design school in the late 1990s, and I had my own interior design business for several years. Urbanspace Interiors has given me the perfect setting to create my dream job. I’ve been able to search the world for amazing design (both online and in real life travels) to help create an inspirational showroom for our clients, co-design a beautiful e-commerce website, and work on countless residential and commercial interiors over the last five years. I am truly grateful that this is my job.

A Visit To Urbanspace Interiors in interior design home furnishings Category

What’s your favorite item in the store right now?

That’s a tough one. It’s probably a tie between our Pig Table by Moooi, which is our unofficial Urbanspace mascot, and captures the whimsical essence of our showroom, and the Tacchini Dressed sofa, which sums up how we think contemporary design should feel–warm, inviting, and like you’ve met your furniture soul mate.

A Visit To Urbanspace Interiors in interior design home furnishings Category

What is this season’s inspiration?

We just got our first cool front in Austin, and fall always inspires texture. I love getting to play with amazing woven fabrics from Maharam and Knoll, as well as incredible pillows and throws from Missoni Home and Tabula Rasa. It’s also the perfect time to hang out and relax outside, so it always inspires me in creating outdoor spaces.

A Visit To Urbanspace Interiors in interior design home furnishings Category

Are you carrying any new products and/or undiscovered gems you’re particularly excited about?

This year we brought some new lines to Austin by young, up-and-coming designers mostly based out of NYC, including Gabriel Scott, Bec Brittain, Inigo Elizalde, and Tabula Rasa. We also love our local creatives who make such cool stuff, like Matthew Winters’ Light Boxes (Y’ALL is a crowd favorite down here in Texas, although DANG is mine). Also, Eagle’s Nest Artistry’s live-edge tables made from reclaimed trees here in Austin—even Pecan Trees from Zilker Park.

A Visit To Urbanspace Interiors in interior design home furnishings Category

What’s been a consistent best seller?

Consistent best seller hands down is Missoni Home. We have the exclusive rights to market the line in Austin but it’s not just a best seller locally. Missoni Home is also the best seller on our nationally reaching e-commerce site. Clients and customers also love accessories from Seletti and imm Living. They have such cool pieces that bring a big smile to your face and a playful wink to your home decor. Furniture wise, the Tacchini Dressed Sofa and Moroso Fjord Ottomans are always favorites, along with the stunning and sculptural Matthew Hilton Light Extending Table.

A Visit To Urbanspace Interiors in interior design home furnishings Category

Does the store have its own line?

We make custom pieces all the time, and our own collection is the next step that we can’t wait to get into. We’ve spent the last few years learning what is already existing in the marketplace and talking to our customers about what they need. We want our collection to be a creative expression of who we are as a brand, as well as really fill the void we feel exists. The first step has been the Commuter Bike Rack, which was designed in-house, along with the industrial designers at Austin’s Sarabi Studio. We wanted to create something that was first and foremost incredibly functional and efficient, since many of our clients live in condos and need somewhere to store their bike and helmet outside of the parking garage and condo foyer. Naturally, we also wanted it to be beautiful and an integrated into the overall design elements of a home.

A Visit To Urbanspace Interiors in interior design home furnishings Category

Any special events coming up?

Our showroom is such a visually exciting space, and we lend it to local members of the community to host private events throughout the year. We also use the showroom for customer appreciation events, pop-up art installations, and parties surrounding Austin events such as Formula One, Austin City Limits festival, and South by Southwest Interactive and Music festival.

Do you have anything from the store in your own home?

Heck yes. In my home, I have Missoni in my bedroom and bathroom, as well as some accessories from DL & Co., imm Living, and Seletti. I also have a Moroso side table, and I’m saving for the perfect Moroso Lounge chair.

DDW13: A Visit to Vlisco Textiles

by Katie Treggiden
Tifmurray

Whaaaaaaat - i love that pic of the woman reclining and posing upright in the same gown.

DDW13: A Visit to Vlisco Textiles

You might assume that Vlisco was a West African company selling to the Dutch, but in fact quite the opposite is true. Vlisco have been making traditional batik fabric in Holland since 1846, when Pieter Fentener van Vlissingen founded the company. Because genuine Indonesian batik was very labor-intensive and therefore expensive, he spotted an opportunity to automate the dyeing process to make the fabrics more affordable.

DDW13: A Visit to Vlisco Textiles in style fashion Category

Combining Dutch craftsmanship with West and Central African fashion, taste and style, the fabrics were known colloquially as ‘Hollandais’ (from the French for ‘Dutch’) and have been sold by local vendors to wealthy Africans for more than a century.

DDW13: A Visit to Vlisco Textiles in style fashion Category

Each design starts with a hand drawing (like the ones pictured above) by one Vlisco’s team of designers who might be based in Eindhoven, but who come from countries as diverse as Mexico, Cameroon, France, Britain and of course the Netherlands.

DDW13: A Visit to Vlisco Textiles in style fashion Category

The designers might find their inspiration from Africa—whether it’s from landscapes, every day objects, traditional kente cloth or tribal art—but increasingly they are also drawing from international trends, Islamic geometrical patterns, modern music and pop art.

DDW13: A Visit to Vlisco Textiles in style fashion Category

Creative Director Roger Gerards said: “A lot of our designs are named by our consumers. As soon as they’ve given names to them, they’ve adopted the product as their own, as if they have baptized it. We are the father making the product, but our consumers are the ones that name them—there is a huge emotional connection there.”

DDW13: A Visit to Vlisco Textiles in style fashion Category

“The designers are so autonomous and free that we can make these bold designs that really differ from each other. They really inspire me. Pattern designs are the source for the whole brand, and how we communicate,” Roger said.

DDW13: A Visit to Vlisco Textiles in style fashion Category

“We have a huge archive as a company and have collected archives from other companies too. We have Indonesian fabrics dating back to 1850,” says Roger. “But we’re on the verge of becoming a new Vlisco, and we’re giving a glimpse of that during Dutch Design Week. We’ve developed bags and scarves in Italy; a completely different collection from the current West African fabrics.”

DDW13: A Visit to Vlisco Textiles in style fashion Category

“We’re certainly going global, which means we will be selling products worldwide—products other than just fabrics, products born of our unique design laboratory,” says Roger.

Libratone Loop Versatile Home Speaker

by Jaime Derringer

Libratone Loop Versatile Home Speaker

Libratone is a Danish audio company that creates sound systems with a three-pronged approach: wireless technology, hi-fi quality, and Scandinavian design. Their latest design, called Loop, is a modern wireless speaker that not only claims to have breathtaking stereo sound, but it looks pretty darn nice on your bookshelf, too.

The flexibility of Loop is what’s most interesting about its design. The speaker was made to be extremely slim with a special stand or wall mount option: so easy for you to take it from the shelf to the wall.

Loop doesn’t hide in the background. Breaking free from the “hide the technology” tradition in interior design, its colorful wool textile and round shape makes it stand out a little more on your wall, shelf or windowsill making it feel more like a standout accessory than a wallflower.

Is it a Pencil or is it a Stylus? It’s Both!

by Caroline Williamson

Is it a Pencil or is it a Stylus? It’s Both!

From the company with an unforgettable name that brings you quirky, but useful, accessories—SUCK UK—comes the Sketch Stylus. It may look like an ordinary pencil but it’s actually a stylus that works on your touchscreen devices. One side is a working pencil but the “eraser” is actually a built-in stylus made from ECR (Electro Conductive Rubber) that works with your iPad, iPhone, and other devices.

make it a-door-able...

back door?

Oh Joy | Metallic Stripe Door DIY

You might know that I have a thing for contact paper. First with my home studio, then Ruby's room, and then my new studio. The thing with contact paper is that when you're using it for its traditional and functional use as drawer liners or cabinet liners, you often have a ton left over because you have to buy a whole roll just to fill a couple drawers. So with my love of decorating with contact paper, I'm going to show you a super easy way to use those leftover scraps of contact paper you might have in your house from other projects and put them to good use in another way...by decorating your door. I'm using gold contact paper because I had a ton leftover from my new studio toe kick project, but you can use any color or pattern contact paper (or a mix of whatever you have)!

Oh Joy | Metallic Stripe Door DIY

1. Start by cutting the contact paper into strips that are at least 2" longer than the width you need (that way you can have the bit of excess fold onto the door sides for a seamless look. My strips are 4" wide, but you can make them skinnier or wider based on your preference.

2. Next, place strips one-by-one until you reach the desired amount of coverage. I decided to cover the whole door with evenly spaced stripes. With each piece, simply smooth out any air bubbles in each piece as you go.

And voila! It's so easy and super cute! And the best part is—it's totally temporary. So if you rent your home or if you just want to change it a year later, you can with no harm done to the door.

P.S. See more of my favorite doors right here...

CANVAS Seating by YOY

by Caroline Williamson

CANVAS Seating by YOY

CANVAS is a project by YOY, a Tokyo-based design studio headed by Naoki Ono and Yuki Yamamoto, that will kind of blow your mind. I mean, these seats look like a painting on canvas but you can actually sit on them! The frame is made from wood and aluminum that is covered with an elastic fabric that can withstand the weight of a person.

Images of a chair, an armchair, and a sofa are printed onto the elastic fabric that is stretched around the frame making it look like a painting. Lean the “painting” against the wall and you have yourself an actual chair you can sit in.

Quick Meal: Sweet and Spicy Soba Noodles

by A Beautiful Mess
Tifmurray

Soba noodles. Time to try!

Sweet and spicy soba noodles (click through for recipe) More often than not Trey and I come home from work and are super hungry. I'm sometimes on the verge of "hangry". It's that feeling when you start to get grumpy/angry, because you're so hungry. So we need to make dinner, and fast!

This dinnertime crunch usually results in us making something in the pasta/stir fry department. Trey could eat the same dinner for weeks in a row. I am a little more picky. I am always tweaking or adjusting past dishes we've made. I just like variety, what can I say? Sweet and spicy soba noodles (click through for recipe)This will for sure be making it onto our fast dinners rotation. It's super quick to make, pretty healthy and involves ingredients that we usually have on hand anyway. Except for soba noodles. I will just have to remember to buy those more often. Turns out they are awesome! Since the weather is starting to cool down, I served this dish hot. But this could easily be adapted into a cold pasta dish too, as soba noodles are awesome cold. Warm soba noodle recipeSweet and Spicy Soba Noodles, serves 2-3

6 oz soba noodles
6 oz cooked shrimp (or shredded chicken)
1 red bell pepper
3 cloves garlic
1/4 cup chopped green onion
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup soy sauce
2 tablespoon rice vinegar
1 tablespoon sesame oil
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (add a little more if you really like it spicy!)
2-3 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds

First cook the soba noodles in boiling water for 5-6 minutes. Drain and set aside.Sweet and spicy sauceRemove the tails from the shrimp (optional, but I hate doing this afterwards while eating). Slice up the red pepper. Cook these together in a hot skillet with a tablespoon or so of olive oil just until the peppers start to soften. Then, add the cooked noodles to the pan and turn the heat down to low/medium.

In a small bowl combine the honey, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, ginger, red pepper flakes and minced garlic. Stir to combine. Pour over the noddles, shrimp, and peppers. Cook for 6-8 minutes until the liquid has reduced some. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and green onions.Sweet and spicy soba noodles (click through for recipe) Dinner is served, in around 30 minutes or less. Score! Enjoy. xo. Emma
