The Godmother of Rock & Roll: Sister Rosetta Tharpe Live in Manchester, 1964

by Maria Popova

“I’m singing, oh I’m singing in my soul, when the troubles roll, I sing from morn’ till night, it makes my burdens light…”

Sister Rosetta Tharpereconstructionist, gospel music’s first superstar, the godmother of rock and roll, “the original soul sister,” Literary Jukebox hero — was born on this day in 1915. No better way to celebrate her spirit and legacy than with her legendary, electrifying 1964 live performance of “Didn’t It Rain” at the Manchester train station, complete with her iconic white coat and electric guitar.

Sister Rosetta’s remarkable story unfolds like never before in the 2007 biography Shout, Sister, Shout!: The Untold Story of Rock-and-Roll Trailblazer Sister Rosetta Tharpe (public library). It opens with gospel singer Ira Tucker’s perfect depiction of her spirit:

When you talked about Rosetta Tharpe you talked about a ball of energy. This woman would come out on the stage she’d have people laughing, she’d talk to them in a way that it was almost like she was related to them. And when she finished her act, they were standing. You know, they would love this woman. And she was a lovable person. I mean she was an approachable person. Even though she was a diva too, you know, because she did play the diva role.

Also of note and delight, the 2003 tribute album Shout, Sister, Shout!.

If we are speaking of cult bands, Psychick TV must be in top five (with TG and Coil). Collaborating with such artists as Burroughs, Gysin, Jarman (he made a backdrop videos for their live performances),... can make them avantgarde legends but if you google any of names listed above you will find that everything about them is pure surrealism.
This is a video from their 1983 performance at Atonal festival December 2nd, 1983 in Wild-West Berlin by United Video Studio.
It's a little bit tame (no sexual provocations this time, folks) but good.

On screen lettering shows 2 long messages(harangues), the first one starts with "A moment of crisis" and the second with "PsychicTelevision", both of them are in Spanish. As are these interviews.Translate and Subtitle anyone?

When introducing the program, Paloma Chamorro, program director warned about the content and encouraged sensible or not educated minds to change the channel or do a different activity out of the TV. This intro is included in the Orridge, Jarman & Valls interview.

8 Transmissions 8 crosses the borderline between entertainment and instruction, switching the viewer between the accessibility of pop videos and depth of ritualistic forms and images. These videos are celebratory, drawing a modern parallel with pagan rites of initiation.

7 Psychic TV - Just Like Arcadia
8 Psychic TV - Joy

Notes
The filming for 'Joy' began with a live show at Manchester Poly in October 1988, and I suspect was originally destined to end there. However, Karen Bentham created an art promo out of the title track and the rest, as they say, is history.

Next came the filming of a promo for 'RU Xperienced' - shot in Derek Jarman's beautiful garden in Dungerness. Karen's film making style was very much suited to the various outputs of the band and P-Orridge family and this became the beginning of a collaboration that was set to last for the next few years.

Described by some as a video masterpiece, 'Joy' ended up as a very colourful and artistic mix capturing Psychic TV in a number of guises.

Maple Syrup 1987 & 1989
ImageHost.org
Recorded live in Toronto during the PTV North American tours of 1987 and 1989. Two of the many faces of PTV are presented here. This unique footage captures the essence of the concert itself and is presented as documentation not entertainment. The visual limitations of the recording are juxtaposed with archive footage severing the normal 'safety and comfort' of the commercial pop video where illusion becomes the norm. This is PTV as it is, confronting and confounding.

Notes
'Black' was filmed live at the Subterrania Club, London, in March 1991, capturing the band at the height of their acid-phase. Again Karen's visual attack turned the film into something completely different being described as "transforming the normal sterility and division of the artist/audience dynamic into a truly awesome vision of collaborative participation". Anyway it looked pretty good.

by noreply@blogger.com (Gonçalo Pena)

Mamute is dead. In the process lots of bones that once formed the structure of his massive body, are now scattered like litter.
