BBC Panorama: Are Sharia Councils Failing Vulnerable Women?

by Admin

From BBC News:
BBC Panorama has uncovered fresh evidence of how some Sharia councils in Britain may be putting Muslim women "at risk" by pressuring them to stay in abusive marriages.

In a small terraced house in east London, a woman and her husband argue before an Islamic scholar who sits on a dais above them in a room that looks and feels like a court.

This is Leyton Islamic Sharia Council, and Dr Suhaib Hasan will decide if the woman can have a divorce. Her husband is refusing to grant her one and the couple have been coming here for a year.

She accuses him of refusing to work, ignoring the children and verbally abusing her. He vehemently denies it. When Dr Hasan orders the husband to leave the room, the woman breaks down in tears.

"I hate him, I can't even bear to look at him, he has ruined my life," she sobs.

Dr Hasan sends the couple away for another month to try to save their marriage, with the help of Allah.

new cumbia mix! Rupture vs Sonido Martines

by jace

Internet, what internet? My new mix CD is available only at a taco shop in Manhattan.

1122cover

Yes — Sonido Martines & I each made a 30-minute mix of “cumbia cumbia, not nueva cumbia” for your listening pleasure. The hourlong CD is available exclusively at Tacos Zaragoza in the East Village (14th + A), $8. Treating MUSIC as FOOD.

NOTE: some people have had problems with corrupted CDs. If you’ve purchased a CD and it doesn’t read well, leave a comment with snapshot of the CD. Be sure to include your email address in the field (only I can read it) and we’ll make things better…

For my half-hour I used all cumbias purchased in Brooklyn , so it skews heavily towards cumbias poblanas, mexican cumbias, tunes make in the States. Shoutouts include: Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, New Jersey, Virginia, Baltimore, Las Carolinas, Ellay… kinda functions as a map of where Mexicans are strong in the US! There’s no tracklist but that’s OK because everyone is always shouting out their name anyhow, and my man Talacha comes on as sonidero. Here’s the 1st 10 minutes of my mix.

Jamie's Jungle Book // Chapter Seventeen

by noreply@blogger.com (Tom Root)

DJ Hype - 'Dreams' (Suburban Base Records 1994)

Inspired by the Uncle Dugs show which paid homage to the legendary label that was Suburban Base Records, I decided this week to write about one of the first Jungle tracks I picked up way back in 1994. Prior to Jungle I had been buying Acid House and early Hardcore but as far as Jungle is concerned this is probably my earliest memory on vinyl.

In some respects, release 38 was somewhat of a mixture of styles, what with the devastating Jungle monster that was ‘Roll The Beats remix’ on side A, ‘Dawn of the Fever’ (another Jungle track which sampled KRS-One’s ‘Mad Crew’) and ‘Dreams’ both on the flip. This tune being my personal favourite which was an infusion of Breakbeat Hardcore and Jungle all rolled into one.

I originally assumed Hype sampled vocals for ‘Dreams’ from one of the Nightmare on Elm Street films although conflicting information on the internet suggests it was taken from track by the Rap group ‘Lifers Group’ - a group consisting of men who served life and extended long-term sentences in excess of 25 years. Whatever the sample source though, it really added to the mood of the track, you can picture Hype sitting at a rickety old piano programming some pads while everything around him is getting dark, the wind is picking up... then everything stops for a second before the breakbeats come thundering down. Whatever next, DJ Hype in the next remake of Friday the 13th?.

Most probably overlooked for being on the B side edge and because it wasn’t a Jungle tune, however, for anyone with a love for anything that crossed the line between Breakbeat Hardcore and Jungle then this really is a tune for you. At the time I wished I could have pushed the track over +8 in order for it to fit in with the new breed of Hardcore that was emerging at the time but to be honest it was always going to be best suited at its slower pitch.

North Korean Missile Test Delayed by Windows 8

North Korea’s official news agency announced today that the military’s planned missile test had been put on hold because of “problems with Windows 8.” Intelligence analysts said that the announcement gave rare insight into the inner workings of North Korea’s missile program, which until last year had been running on Windows 95. The announcement from the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) did not indicate a new scheduled time for a missile test, saying only that it was “working with Windows 8 support to resolve the issue.”

[Update: It's Back] Google Boots New Game Hazard Rush From Play Store For SEO Joke, Reminds Us Not To Mess With The Google

by Ryan Whitwam

Play_Store_icon_imageIt was just five days ago that Hazard Rush was released to the Play Store. The developer took to Reddit to make the announcement and offer some freebies. Well, the community was into Hazard Rush, which (according to the app description) is a little like Snake and Geometry Wars. It's the next part of the description that got Hazard Rush banned from Google Play. The developer made a cheeky SEO joke, and that was enough for it to get swept up in Google's Play Store purge.

The description read:

Sit on the edge of your bus, train, subway, office or toilet seat as you evade enemies, trigger bombs, and collect multipliers in pursuit of your high scores.

Brad Paisley And LL Cool J Present ‘Accidental Racist’

by Travis

Brad Paisley’s new album, Wheelhouse, features collaborations from a number of music artists, including Charlie Daniels and Dierks Bentley, but he could have brought Michael Jackson back from the dead for a new version of Thriller done only in armpit farts, and people would still probably be talking about “Accidental Racist” featuring LL Cool J.

An ode to how white and black people have misconceptions about each other from rebel flag t-shirts to gold chains, “Accidental Racist” has caused a shitstorm on the Internet that Paisley probably didn’t expect. That said, EW got a very lengthy, rambling response from Paisley in advance about why he recorded this song and the basic gist is:

It just doesn’t do any good to blatantly do things and be like, ‘Just get over it.’ That’s not what we’re saying. This is a very sensitive subject, and we’re trying to have the discussion in a way that it can help.

Discussions about race relations are great. We probably need them now more than ever. But do we need them in a hokey country music song with a terribly out-of-place rap that feature the line “RIP Robert E. Lee”? God I hope not.

To the man who waited on me
At the Starbucks down on Main
I hope you understand
When I put on that t-shirt
The only thing I meant to say
Is I’m a Skynyrd fan

The red flag on my chest is somehow like the elephant
In the corner of the South
And I just walked him right in the room

Just a proud rebel son
With an old can of worms
Looking like I’ve got a lot to learn
But from my point of view

I’m just a white man
Coming to you from the Southland
Trying to understand what it’s like not to be
I’m proud of where I’m from
But not everything we’ve done
And it ain’t like you and me to rewrite history
Our generation didn’t start this nation
We’re still picking up the pieces
Walking over eggshells
Fighting over yesterday
And caught between southern pride
And southern blame

They called it Reconstruction
Fixed the buildings, dried some tears
We’re still sifting’ through the rubble
After 150 years
I’ll try to put myself in your shoes
And that’s a good place to begin
It ain’t like I can walk a mile
In someone else’s skin

‘Cause I’m just a white man
Living in the Southland
Just like you, I’m more than what you see
I’m proud of where I’m from
And not everything we’ve done
And it ain’t like you and me to rewrite history
Our generation didn’t start this nation
And we’re still paying for the mistakes
Than a bunch of folks made
Long before we came
Caught somewhere between southern pride
And southern blame

(LL Cool J’s rap)
Dear Mr. White Man, I wish you understood
What the world is really like when you’re living in the hood
Just because my pants are saggin’ doesn’t mean I’m up to no good
You should try to get to know me, I really wish you would
Now my chains are gold, but I’m still misunderstood
I wasn’t there when Sherman’s March turned the south into firewood
I want you to get paid, but be a slave I never could
Feel like a new-fangled Django dogging invisible white hoods
So when I see that white cowboy hat, I’m thinking it’s not all good
I guess we’re both guilty of judging the cover, not the book
I’d love to buy you a beer, conversate and clear the air
But I see that red flag and I think you wish I wasn’t here

I’m just a white man
(LL: If you don’t judge my do-rag)
Coming to you from the southland
(I won’t judge your red flag)
Trying to understand what it’s like not to be
I’m proud of where I’m from
(If you forget my gold chains)
But not everything we’ve done
(I’ll forget the iron chains)
It ain’t like you and me can rewrite history
(Can’t rewrite history, baby)
Oh, Dixieland
(The relationship between the Mason-Dixon needs some fixing’)
I hope you understand what this is all about
(Quite frankly, I’m a black Yankee, but I’ve been thinking about this lately)
I’m a son of the New South
(The past is the past, you feel me)
And I just want to make things right
(Let bygones be bygones)
Where all that’s left is southern pride
(RIP Robert E. Lee, but I’ve gotta thank Abraham Lincoln for freeing me, know what I mean)

Virginia Governor Candidate Supports Anti-Oral Sex Law

by vorjack

Via Mother Jones:

Last month, three judges on the US Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit deemed a Virginia anti-sodomy law unconstitutional. The provision, part of the state’s “Crimes Against Nature” law, has been moot since the 2003 US Supreme Court decision overruled state laws barring consensual gay sex, but Virginia has kept the prohibition on the books.

Now Virginia attorney general and Republican gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli is asking the full 4th Circuit to reconsider the case. Cuccinelli wants the court to revive the prohibition on consensual anal and oral sex, for both gay and straight people. (The case at hand involves consensual, heterosexual oral sex.)

This deserves a joke from the late, great Molly Ivins:

The seventy-third session (1993) of the Texas Legislature is pretty much typified by the following Warren Chisum story, Representative Chisum being the Bible-thumping dwarf from Pampa who has added such “je ne sais quoi” to the proceedings this year.

The Texas Senate had a rare moment of courage early in the session when it voted to remove homosexual sodomy from the revised version of the penal code. All were astonished.

Their vision made its way over to the House, where Chisum promptly rose and introduced an amendment to reinstate the damn thing. The Housies were afraid everyone would think they were queer if they didn’t vote for Chisum’s amendment, so they did.

Then some scholar explained to Chisum that unless he reinstated the ban on heterosexual sodomy as well, the law would be declared unconstitutional. So Chisum promptly got up and did just that.

Whereupon we had one of the more bizarre debates in the history of the Lege, with assorted avant garde members rising at the back mike to say, approximately, “Uh, Warren, uh, suppose I am in bed with my lawfully wedded spouse and I, like, kind of misaim and wind up in the wrong hole. You don’t want to send me to prison for that, do you?”

Chisum would stoutly reply, “Yes, I do. It’s against nature and The Bible.”

So the Housies were afraid everyone would think they were perverts if they didn’t vote for it, and they did. Chisum then shook hands with his ally, Talmadge Heflin of Houston, in celebration of this double triumph, and the Speaker had to send the Sergeant-at-arms over to reprimand them both.

Because under Chisum’s own amendments, it’s illegal for a prick to touch an asshole in this state. [From Nothin' But Good Times Ahead]

Don’t nobody go kissing Candidate Cuccinelli.

12" of the Week // Fracture and Neptune - 'Clissold' Machinedrum VIP

by noreply@blogger.com (Tom Root)

There seems to have been for a little while now, a small group of producers developing on the far left of the dnb spectrum. They are not wholly bred from dnb per se but seem to be pushing the very limits of what can be bracketed into its sphere through a number of well-established and respected channels. That to me is a very exciting prospect. Firstly it means their music is easily accessible to those who are already fans of ‘dnb’. Consequently it broadens the horizons of those who might not take the time to look/listen to the smaller niche labels that operate on the fringes of the genre. Secondly it kind of hints towards what we’ve always known here at EDJ – that drum and bass music has a huge amount of potential and near limitless evolutionary possibilities. The fact that some of these producers are already well established and proven in other genres kind of gives them instant credence as well. Maybe that’s a bad thing though; does it impair the listeners perception of what is to come before it is listened to? It’s a challenge eternally faced, human nature drives us instinctively towards preconceptions because they add context to our circumstances. I heard this tune from this guy the other day (non-dnb) it had this kind of vibe, it was done extremely well because of x, y or z factor therefore I expect those same positive attributes to shine through in this dnb tune I’ve heard of (but not yet heard). What if they don’t? Does it instantly turn you off? Do you persevere? Is it not easier to just go back to something tried and tested and not invest the necessary time, breaking down those barriers of perception?

This week, one of the ripest of fruits from the aforementioned group of producers hits our shelves and ticks all the right boxes, regardless of any preconceptions. Machinedrum has been doing his thing for a good while, solo on labels like Planet MU but also as one half of Sepalcure on Hotflush over the last couple of years. You couldn’t get two more esteemed labels in the contemporary sphere and the diversity of sound produced between the two is a testament to his talent that needs little explaining by me! This week he drops the last of Astrophonica’s experimental VIP series on a one sided 10”. The VIP in question is that of ‘Clissold’. It was the first tune Astrophonica released and had previously been doing the rounds for some time. It was due to drop on DJ Flight’s Play:Music label but for reasons unknown never did. It was your classic Fracture and Neptune cosmic funk work out, full of Emu squelch and razor sharp breaks. So if anticipation for the original was high, a VIP more than three years later has had people practically salivating.

As previously hinted towards, it doesn’t disappoint. With more shuffle and skittishness than the original it is certainly step away from its jungle homage and one towards that of the juke-step mentioned last week re: the OM Unit/Sam Binga EP on Exit. It’s not that it brings the original up to date as it were. It just adds more of a sound de jour to the musical palette. The result is that it gives it a different spin, comes at it from a different angle I suppose. The Emu squelch is still prevalent (thankfully) and probably still just about maintains itself as the defining characteristic. As a package though the whole composition is rife with quality, from the rave like keys on the intro which replace the somewhat more laid back guitar licks from the original to the way that the such intricate percussion weaves its way in out of the fx and bass so seamlessly. It’s more floor friendly as well, mainly thanks to the sonic power of the beats and depth of bass but also because of the way it somewhat rides the crest of current popularity of all things juke infused.

The vinyl has been limited to 300 copies and unfortunately/refreshingly these have all sold out of Astrophonica’s Surus store. Cue frivolous scouring of the World Wide Web to try and get you one of the few remaining copies!
