CyanogenMod 10.1.2 Is Another Small Security Update, Patches Second Master Key APK Vulnerability

by Jeremiah Rice

nexusae0_cyanogenmod-10-1-m-series-builds-rolling-out-now-for-select-devices-more-coming-soon_thSecond verse, same as the first. Two days ago the CyanogenMod ROM team announced a security update to the CM 10.1 platform, incorporating the "Master Key" security patch that Google had already issued back in February. Yesterday another, more intricate exploit in the same vein was posted by a Chinese blog, and again, Google has rapidly moved to patch the problem in Android... which won't be much comfort to those running an older release.

Apple Ends Stupid "Appstore" Trademark Lawsuit Against Amazon, Probably Because It Was Really Stupid

by David Ruddock

7998c8f5838d65d0b1800c0dabef5a3f

While of only tangential relation to Android (the Amazon Appstore is an Android app store after all), when Apple filed a lawsuit against Amazon over 2 years ago for infringing its trademark on "App Store," I got a bit perturbed. Their reasoning? Well, basically there wasn't much in the way of good legal argument for the case from day one. In fact, Apple probably knew the likelihood of a victory was low, and has been biding time hoping that Amazon would cave to a settlement demand.

RSS App gReader Updated To v3.3.4, Adds Support For The Old Reader

by Ryan Whitwam

unnamedAs you're reading this, the world has changed. After years of faithful service, Google Reader has ceased operation. Ever since the announcement was made services like Feedly have been revving up to take its place. The Old Reader is another alternative that doesn't get as much attention, but it's got some admirers. The uber-popular RSS reader app gReader has just been updated with support for The Old Reader to help ease the transition.

OUYA Android Console Officially On Sale Today For $100 - Best Buy, Target, And OUYA Store Now Shipping

by Jeremiah Rice

ouya smallThe day has finally come, true believers. The OUYA console is real, it's on sale, and you can have one of three online retailers send one to your doorstep. The $100 gaming SoC-in-a-box got its celebrated start on Kickstarter, but as of today you don't need to be among its backers to buy one. The OUYA storefront, Best Buy, and Target are all allowing orders to go through at the moment - Gamestop and Amazon are also retail partners, but the former isn't allowing you to add the item to your cart, while the latter is showing "out of stock."

All the US and Canadian stores list the OUYA at $99.99, while UK gamers can pick it up for the same price in pounds.

Privacy Guard (Formerly Incognito Mode) Has Been Merged Into CyanogenMod, Will Appear In Nightlies Starting Today

by Bertel King, Jr.

CyanogenModPrivacy Guard, the feature formerly known as Incognito Mode for apps, will make its way into CyanogenMod starting tonight. Steve Kondik, Mr. Cyanogen himself, has merged the ability to enable Privacy Guard support into all future nightly builds. Just to be clear, this new feature is not included in the 10.1.0 RC or stable releases currently available. Only those who like to walk on the wild side are getting their hands on this feature right away.

CyanogenMod-Privacy

As the former name puts quite clearly, Privacy Guard enables users to run specific apps in what is essentially an incognito mode. The option can be enabled in the App Info panel.

Why I Don’t Believe in Life After Death

by vorjack

Patheos asks What do I Really Believe?, and uses it as a round-up for various posts on certain topics. One topic is the afterlife: What Really Happens When We Die?

Tough for an atheist to answer this question in any depth. I usually default to my wife’s answer, “we rejoin the nitrogen cycle.” But it seems like something more is called for, so let me lay out why I’m not moved by most of the discussions of life after death.

Alright, a couple of points.

First, if we’re going to talk about life after death, I’m only interested if it means I get to experience it. I’m not trying to be selfish, I’m just trying to make the point that if something that is not me survives, like some mindless “spark of life” or shard of the infinite that loses all individuality, then I don’t care because that’s not really me that is surviving.

What does have to survive? Let’s be clear that I am the whole of my being: my thoughts, my memories, my personality and so one. I see those things as interwoven, so I don’t believe that I could drink from the river of Lethe and really still be me. My experiences, retained in my memories, shape my personality and make up who I am.

Second, some background: many members of my family suffer from mental illnesses. I’ve become very familiar with the effects of lithium and other such substances. I know that a sprinkle of this chemical and a pill of that chemical can completely alter someone’s personality. I’ve learned that we are material, and that who we are is chemistry.

I’m open to the idea that the material is not all there is. But whatever your theory for the spiritual aspects of humanity, it has to explain my relatives and their experiences. Further, it has to explain all the evidence we have that the physical brain gives rise to our minds. Under the euphemistic heading of “natural experiments,” there are hundreds of cases where accidental damage to the brain has altered a person’s perceptions, memories, personality, emotions – the whole self.

Finally, the verdict: I do not see how the being that I am could survive the shutdown of the system that my personality arises from. I cannot fathom how there could be a life after death that would be consoling or meaningful. I’m open to suggestions, but I don’t understand how we can get beyond the above points.

Samsung Makes The Ativ Q Official – A 13" Dual OS, Notebook/Tablet Hybrid With An Insane 3200x1800 Display

by Cameron Summerson

1[8]

Dual OS devices featuring Windows 8 and Android are nothing new (if anything, they're becoming more and more common), and Samsung decided it was time to throw its name into the we can do two things at once arena with the just-announce Ativ Q. At its core, the Ativ Q is a 13.3-inch laptop/tablet hybrid, but the real allure here is its insane 275PPI display that runs at a massive 3200x1800 resolution.

1

The Q is running on Intel's latest Haswell processor line, though it wasn't clear exactly which model is powering the device. It also packs an S-Pen, and – get this – will allow users to pin Android apps to the Windows 8 desktop.

Skinny Puppy – Weapon

by Oliver Chesler

Skinny Puppy’s new album is about to be released. Like a lot of old Industrial or EBM bands I lost faith that I would hear much new stuff that I would be interested in. However, when I heard the song 101 (2011) by the SP related Ohgr project I knew somewhere the old fire existed. Well here we have the new album Weapon and Skinny Puppy bought some of their old equipment back, dusted off other toys left in closets and return to their roots. You can hear a full preview of the new album at Revolver Mag (link). Listen to the songs Wornin’, saLvo and the new version of Solvent and you are transported.

Mindf*cker: Actual footage of Rev. Jim Jones preaching at The People’s Temple

Here’s something you don’t see everyday, footage of Rev. Jim Jones and a few hundred members of his People’s Temple. One of their actual services. It’s astonishing. Thirty fly-on-the-wall minutes of an expert brain-washer in action.

This was shot sometime in the 1970s and is presumed to have been recorded during a service at the People’s Temple’s Redwood Valley “home church” (there were several dozen satellites churches in California and about 3000 People’s Temple members).

At first you hear some testimony and praise from some members of the congregation about how great Jim Jones is and then some gospel singing. When the crowd is all good and worked up, the good Reverend steps up to the pulpit to harangue them with a sermon about socialism. Then more gospel music, then more preaching about Marxism.

Jones’ idol was Mao Zedong and the reason he got into the religion racket in the first place—which he was quite open about—was to infiltrate it. Religion was the vehicle for Jones to demonstrate his Marxism in the 1950s and initially he did so by organizing things like soup kitchens for the homeless and other charitable works. By the 1970s, the Peoples Temple was running nine residential care homes for the elderly, six organizations for orphaned children and a state-licensed 40-acre ranch for the mentally disabled.

Jesus was a Communist, he taught. Jones himself was the “ultimate socialist” and often hinted that he was a prophesied revolutionary messiah, a reincarnation of Jesus, Gandhi, Father Divine and Lenin!

Jones studied Mao’s moves during the Cultural Revolution carefully and used the same propaganda/mind control techniques that the Chinese Communist Party had perfected, in particular the “we’re the vanguard of a new age” and “us vs. them” aspects of “outcast” group think. Since he was so paranoid himself, this talent came easily to Jim Jones.

When you look at the composition of the followers in the videotape, at first it looks like all of the People’s Temple members were black, but then the camera finds an entire contingent of young white people sitting together who are dressed conservatively. Whenever Jones starts hitting the high notes about socialism, these folks stand up and cheer like Pentecostal apparatchiks.

Nearly 80% of the People’s Temple congregation was comprised of working class blacks. If you examine the format of the service, Jones kept the trappings of “old style religion” that his African-American followers would have felt at home with at the same time they were being politically re-indoctrinated. One of Jones’ standard dramatic tropes was to throw the Bible on the ground and stomp on it, telling his African-American followers that the white man’s version of Christianity was a boot on their necks.

“This black book has held down you people for 2000 years. It has no power.”

The young white people were the inner circle and had law degrees and other skills that would be useful to a barely disguised flim-flam man like Jones. Some knew how to work the public relations levers or deal with politicians or were good at keeping Jones’ various mail order scams going. Most were Communist “true believers” and felt that they were a part of an exciting social movement. Many of them also acted as de facto social workers, interacting with the State of California on behalf of the poorer members. The praise being heaped on Jones at the beginning of the tape should be seen in that context. By helping the less fortunate deal with the state’s often cruel bureaucracy or by getting them much-needed medical care, housing, food and so forth, Jones became a beloved and trusted father figure, gaining their loyal attendance at his church even though he often openly admitted to being an atheist!

It was ingenious. And it was utterly insane.

Colt Defender Tactical Pen With LED Light

by FerFAL

Even though Tactical Pens are all over the place these days I’m not much of a fan. They carry much of a stigma and could even get you in trouble in airports and other places where the security is tight, while not being that much different in terms of their use as an improvised defensive tool compared to any other pen of solid construction.
Having said that, I looked around for some time and decided to give the Colt Defender Tactical pen a try. I can say I’m pleasantly surprised by it.

Rather than just a self-defense tool, which is usually how they are marketed the Colt Defender has features that could also come in hand during certain emergency scenarios.
Glass Breaker: The hard carbide tip would break glass with ease. I’m thinking of getting out of cars after accidents, escaping buildings due to threats, fire, shootings. The overall sturdiness of the pen means it can be used as a poking/prying/tearing tool too. Not ideal but better than nothing to break through wooden doors or dry walls.

LED light: While not very powerful, its still a button battery LED light. It is bright enough to find your way around a building after a blackout. The LED is located in the clipped cap, so you could use it as a headlamp thanks to the clip if you have a baseball cap to go with it.
DNA collector: DNA would be all over the pen, but on the end where you have the LED light you have a jagged crown around the emitter. Its not too sharp so as to cut through pockets and such, but if jammed against soft tissue (think bad guys face) it will cause lacerations.
Aluminum Kubotan: The shape is somewhat similar to other tactical pens, tapered towards the ends. One end has the glass breaker carbide tip, the other will have the cap with the jagged DNA collector or the exposed tip of the pen. The aircraft grade aluminum construction is very solid.
Writing: And yes of course, it also writes. It uses a Parker refill, easy to find. The cap just clicks into place, which is MUCH more convenient for constant daily use than screw-on caps. The pen feels a bit heavy, but unless you write short novels or do lots of sketching its not something that will bother you.

In conclusion, I think it’s a nice solid pen that could do well in some of these roles that aren’t just limited to self-defense applications. It could also come in handy for breaking and some limited prying, as well as having a small LED which could be of great use if needed for someone that may not carry a flashlight at all times.

Todd Bentley Heals the Lady Bits

by vorjack

We post a lot of clips from preachers who are an embarrassment to mainstream Christianity: Cindy Jacobs, Pat Robertson, Bryan Fisher, and so on.

Todd Bentley is in a league of his own. I’m convinced that fringe lunatics are embarrassed by Todd Bentley. Somewhere in the shriveled lump that is his heart, Fred Phelps is ashamed to be part of the same religion as Todd Bentley.

This is from Bentley’s latest email blast seeking to raise money for his ministry in Uganda. He tells the story of a recent healing:

They brought a woman that had been to all the witch doctors and all the magic soothsayers and whatever she could do to get healed because she had breast cancer. The doctors could do nothing to help her. So she went to the witch doctors and she got involved in all the magic. She said, “I just want to be healed.” She was a notable woman of government. Everybody knew who this woman was, and they knew she had cancer.

After they failed to get her healed, medically and witchcraft, she needed to have surgery to remove one breast. They totally removed one breast from cancer. She was in the crowd that night with maybe six or seven thousand people. As she was standing in the crowd, the power of God came all over her and she grew a brand new breast. They brought her onto the platform and I had never seen anything like this in my life.

This woman was weeping and crying and screaming and jumping up and down. She was excited. The people were like, “What happened to this woman? Is this possible?” Right after that, they brought two more people onto the platform. The woman was born without the parts that a woman needs, and the man as well because of a cancerous tumor. Both of them were instantly healed. This man and woman both received a reproductive miracle in their body. All the reproductive organs and parts grew back in the meeting at the same time that this woman’s breast came back.

The next day when I showed up, all the witch doctors and all the people that believed in witchcraft showed up at the meeting because they said, “We need to meet the white man that has power to make breasts grow.”

“God came all over her …”

… I’m just gonna let you fill in your own joke here. Try not to get us kicked off of Patheos.

Seven years after his role as co-animator on Katsuhiro Otomo’s 1988 landmark feature ‘Akira’, Studio 4°C founder Kōji Morimoto revisits some familiar visual themes in this colourful music video for Ken Ishii’s ‘Extra’…

Akira appears to be Morimoto’s second time working with Otomo. He was also animator for ‘Construction Cancellation Order‘, a short story written and directed by Otomo for the 1987 anthology film ‘Neo Tokyo’. At just under 20 minutes, it’s good company for some extended coffee break action…

Hyperkin Retron 5 Uses Android To Emulate 9 Classic Consoles For Under $100 (No, You Can't Buy It Yet)

by Ryan Whitwam

Retron 5_SNES_ConsoleThe E3 gaming show is usually about showing off the latest and greatest in gaming, but Hyperkin is sticking to the classics. This company has been working on the mother of all classic consoles, and a playable prototype version is on the floor at E3. Whereas most retro game consoles use hardware to imitate the original system, the Hyperkin Retron 5 is doing it with software emulation based on Android.

hyperkin00018

It's called the Retron 5 because it has five slots. There are four slots on top (some of which perform double duty) to support original NES, SNES, Genesis, Famicom, Super Famicom, and Mega Drive cartridges.

New mix: Mala and classic garage

by admin

This is a mix I’ve wanted to do to for a while – mainly because I wanted to listen to it . Yes, this is the sort of thing OneMan does so well, and has been doing for ages, but I think this is still really worth doing. Mala in particular has always had a really strong garage swing and this really brings it out. All classic tunes obviously – it starts deep and heavy, slowly moves up to the really intense section around Mountain Dread March, and then moves nicely into a load of 4×4 garage.

Enjoy – it’s here: http://www.grievousangel.net/GAMixes/Mala_And_Garage_By_Grievous_Angel.mp3

Evolution of AOKP in 4 minutes

by Gergely Szell

Well as you might have noticed, AOKP is slowly getting more and more organized with everything we do. First individual builds, then came Gerrit, nightlys finally showed up…well now we officially have a bug tracker to go along with everything else.

I am happy announce bugs.aokp.co! Please head on over and register an account NAO! In the projects section we have the AOKP section for anything generic in relations to the ROMs, all the individual devices laid out so the bugs will go to the correct maintainers, and also a section for any bugs/ideas/nit picks about any of our websites you might have.

Overall this gives us a greater ability to keep an eye on everything and make sure nothing gets lost in all the madness. As always, if you have any issues with anything, feel free to drop us a line via twitter or IRC and there is always the forums. Have fun and happy bug hunting!

Erick Son of Erick Fails Science Forever

by vorjack

There was a recent Pew Survey that showed a growth in the number of households in which women are the primary breadwinners.

The number of single mother households is up, but the number that is creating headlines is that the number of married women earning more than their spouses is also up. (no mention of married lesbian couples here, so I guess this is all hetero marriage.)

Pew also found that, “Most people reject the idea that it is bad for a marriage if a wife out-earns her husband.” You would not get that impression from the news media. The local and national news have been talking about this survey, usually in their shocked voices, and giving the impression that this is a big and frightening development.

Not surprisingly, the most absurd reactions are coming from Fox News. Here’s Erick Erickson, conservative media pundit and editor of RedState.com, talking to Lou Dobbs:

This is confused, but I think the central quote here is this:

I’m so used to liberals telling conservatives that they’re anti-science. But liberals who defend this and say it is not a bad thing are very anti-science. When you look at biology — when you look at the natural world — the roles of a male and a female in society and in other animals, the male typically is the dominant role. The female, it’s not antithesis, or it’s not competing, it’s a complimentary role.

I think the best reaction comes from Tod Kelly at League of Ordinary Gentlemen:

Normally this is where I make the comment that conservatives need to be careful about saying stuff like this because it could hurt them with the female vote in the next election. But this? This is so astoundingly terrible that I think it might create a rip in the space-time continuum and hurt them not just in future elections, but in past elections and elections in other dimensions as well.

See also Megan Kelly’s reaction to this. She rakes Dobbs and Erickson over the coals:

Keyprop Phone Stand Reaches $30K Kickstarter Funding Goal On Last Day, Revolutionizes Phone Standing

by Bertel King, Jr.

Photo1Every now and then I stumble across a product that I'm instantly frustrated with. I was living my life perfectly contentedly, but now that I've seen this thing, I must have it. For the next ten minutes, that thing is the Keyprop phone stand that just secured funding on Kickstarter at the last moment. This is a tiny stand that works with all smartphones and is always there when you need it.

The concept behind Keyprop is elegantly simple. It's a key-shaped stand that fits comfortably on keychains and props phones up by plugging into their headphone jacks (or the lightning dock on the iPhone 5).

Kurt Cobain’s Daughter Takes On The Kardashians

by Travis

Kendall Jenner is an aspiring model and the 17-year old sister of Kim Kardashian, and she spends a lot of her time Tweeting about her food, jewelry, fashion accessories and her Land Rover, most of which would not have been possible without big sis making amateur porn movies. So when she Tweeted on Tuesday night, “just wish things could be easier sometimes mann”, she probably would have expected a little backlash if anyone in her family existed in this reality.

But before she deleted the Tweet, Frances Bean Cobain, of all people, ripped her to shreds about “CANCER, famine, poverty, draught, disease, natural disasters, Death” before thanking her parents for providing her with a high IQ. Kendall responded with the typical “You don’t know me” routine while claiming that “i give back as much as I can” because she prays for people.

But all I’ve taken away from this is that Courtney-fucking-Love raised a better daughter than Kris Jenner.
