Installation by Kustaa Saksi & Gert Wingårdh

by Glenn

Fresh from the FFF inbox images of Swedish architect Gert Wingårdh’s and Finnish illustrator Kustaa Saksi’s collaborative installation at the Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair (Stockholmsmässan, 5-9 February 2013).

1120 stacks of paper
44000 suspension points
700000 sheets of A3′s

The installation will set the stage for talks on design and architecture at this years fair.

“The design suggests a church interior, with rows of high tables in front of an ‘altar’ where panels hold sway. The table tops are made of a mirror laminate and balance on stacks of A3 paper sheets – 700,000 in total. The entire dome-like structure consists of stacks of paper sheets that hang from the roof in a Venetian blind-like construction. The lowest sheet in each stack carries part of a gigantic illustration that forms the dome-shaped ceiling. [...] Precision in all the preliminary work is crucial. 1,120 stacks consisting of a total of 11,000 A3 sheets in 44,000 points of attachment are being installed across an area of 200 sqm and are then gradually hoisted up.” — Sanna Gebeyehu

“It will be particularly interesting to collaborate with an architect, as at one time I seriously considered this as a career choice. We both work with communication, only with different forms of expression and on different scales. [...] I’m fascinated by architecture and antique ceiling paintings in temples all over the world, and the way they’ve attracted people to share their thoughts and ideas. I’ve wanted to create a similar esthetics, mixed with orientalism, art, mathematics, science and psychedelia, by depicting communication as Darwinistic evolution. Constantly on the move and a work in progress, like bacteria and marine animals when they crawled out of the depths of the sea millions of years ago,” says Kustaa Saksi, the illustrator behind the work.

The behind the scenes footage sheds more light on the monstrous task of setting up the installation.

Urban Geode Street Art

by Jaime Derringer

Urban Geode Street Art in art Category

I am so totally in support of this urban geode street art project. Created by LA artist Paige Smith AKA A Common Name, the geodes are small art installations made from shiny paper.

Located in different cities created inside crevices, cracks, holes and are absolutely awesome to behold. I’d be so excited if I came across one of these as I was walking down the street – it’s like a tiny surprise. I love that she’s creating natural formations out of man-made environments and filling its urban decay and deterioration with something beautiful.

She’s lately been experimenting with making resin casts of her shapes. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.

What Does the Interior of the World’s Largest and Most Expensive Family Home Look Like?

by Diane Pham

green design, eco design, sustainable design, Mumbai, Mukesh Ambani, 1 billion house, Vastu Shastra, Antilia, Perkins and Will, Hirsch Bedner Associates, worlds most expensive home, Nita Ambani

The completion of Antilia — the world’s largest and most expensive family home — certainly caused a stir when we first reported on the sky-scraping abode back in 2011, with readers (and we here at Inhabitat) calling the Ambani family out for its excess. While exterior shots could be readily found on the web over the last couple years, not much surfaced when it came to the interior. Well, it looks like Curbed has delivered our first look coupled with some crazy details as to what is hidden inside this towering construction. From nine high-speed elevators to an ice-room able to produce snow in blizzard-like proportions, this 27-floor home is packed full of ridiculous amenities and then some.

Casa del Agua is a new artisan bar concept in Mexico City where you can go for a drink of rainwater! Meet Sam, the Cat with Eyebrows

Meet Sam, the Cat with Eyebrows

Well... ALMOST eyebrows.

Although he looks permanently worried, hopefully this cool cat can learn to take it easy and relax. Maybe a nice cup of tea and favorite movie will help? Or a massage? Jeez, calm down, Sam, you're making me anxious.
