Chauffeurs can get uppity, and it's no wonder: They're entrusted with driving your six-figure luxury vehicle, and just as you sit in the back with an empty seat next to you, so too is there an empty seat next to the chauffeur up front. This may give them the illusion of parity, or that they'll one day have a companion to sit next to them and keep them company on those long drives to the airport, and that sends the wrong message.

But not with Volvo's XC90 Excellence Lounge Console concept, designed for the discriminating executive.

The designers have ripped the front passenger seat out altogether and replaced it with a multifunctional object. At first glance, it's a shoe cabinet.

This conveniently deprives the chauffeur of a place to keep his personal effects, with the added bonus of allowing the passenger to take their shoes off and place their aromatic feet much closer to where the chauffeur can smell them.

A pop-up tray contains a 17-inch LCD monitor and doubles as a jewelry tray, with a large mirror that flips out of the rear.

There is also a lockable compartment where you can store an array of expensive watches that cost more than the chauffeur's annual salary; it cannot hurt, we think, to mention this aloud as you bring each watch out to model it.

Admittedly the design is not perfect, as the executive may wish to sit on the left-hand side and still stretch out. Ideally there would be some way for a left-riding passenger to recline, extending their shoeless feet to either side of the chauffeur's head. But until they work that out, we'll have to settle for this:

Appearing by holograph in a lecture at the Sydney Opera House on Saturday, physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking said that Zayn Malik could still be a member of One Direction — in a parallel universe, that is. 

The Sydney Morning-Herald reports that the esteemed scientist was asked how his theories could apply to the all-important Zayn Malik situation. Fans, there might be a light at the end of the tunnel.

"My advice to any heartbroken young girl is to pay close attention to the study of theoretical physics, because one day there may be proof of multiple universes," Hawking told the Sydney crowd. "It would not then be beyond the realms of possibility that somewhere outside of our own universe lies another different universe, and in that universe Zayn is still in One Direction."

See? Every cloud has a silver lining. There could be a parallel universe where McDreamy is totally fine, the Seinfeld finale never happened, and Reese and Ryan never split up. Totally on board with this alternate-reality theory. 

We can just imagine legions of tweens popping into the library for a copy of A Brief History of Time. Meanwhile, we're trying to wrap our heads around the fact that Stephen Hawking is up on the latest boy-band news.

I'd never heard of freeline skates before...they're like little skateboards, one for each foot. This video shows how they're used for tricks and such:

That looks hard, much more difficult than skateboarding or inline skates. But maybe not, once you get the hang of it? Can't beat the portability though...they'd slip right into a small bag when you're not using them. (via @matiasfrndz)

Happy 89th birthday, Queen Elizabeth! While the official party won't be until June, the actual day is the perfect time to look back at some of the best reasons to celebrate the matriarch today and every day.

1. She's a road warrior.
The makers of the next Fast and Furious sequel should consider calling the Queen if they need another driver. Back in 1998, she gave Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah a surprise when she hopped behind the wheel of a Land Rover and drove him around one of her Scottish estates. Saudi Arabia may ban women from driving, but that didn't stop her from showing her fellow royal how things are done in Britain. She also knows her way around a car engine; during World War II, she worked on trucks as part of the women's branch of the British army.

2. She took her turn as a Bond girl.
When London hosted the Olympics in 2012, Queen Elizabeth made a very special appearance when she and Daniel Craig did some "skydiving" into the Opening Ceremonies. Of course, she had a stuntman, but the joke was a good example of her sense of humor, which is famous even if she mostly keeps it behind closed doors.

3. She has staying power.
Elizabeth's long reign has given her the chance to meet 12 British prime ministers and 12 U.S. presidents. She's probably had certain hats for more years than most presidents spend in politics.

4. She knows the importance of a good alarm.
The Queen probably doesn't hit the snooze button — she keeps a personal bagpiper to play her a wake-up tune in the morning.

5. She's an animal lover — but she has her limits. 
The Queen has received all sorts of exotic animals as gifts (beavers, an elephant), and she claims ownership of all of the nation's swans, but she's still best known for her pack of corgis, the Welsh herding dogs that have become synonymous with the Monarchy and cute things on the Internet. But now that she's getting on in years, the Queen recently made the decision to stop taking on new pets. Elizabeth is reportedly concerned about having too many animals underfoot.

6. She's so important, the whole nation is freaked out by the thought of losing her. 
And, no one knows exactly what will happen when she dies. When Queen Elizabeth eventually passes away, the country will experience social and economic upheaval, and a new King will have to be crowned. We're talking disruptions of billions of pounds, and potentially days of commemoration and coverage. There hasn't been anything like it in decades, and no one seems to know quite how to prepare, which is fitting for such an icon.
