Computer Rooms
Book put together by Goto80 features photos of computer set ups, personal spaces of computer culture:
This is what computer culture really looks like. A collection
of photos that show the messy reality behind the shiny online facade. Where we make our living and spend our free time. And try to be creative. Or maybe even worse.Very few people get to see these spaces. It’s not the kind of place we take photos of, or show to visitors. Maybe we don’t even see it ourselves. It’s a sort of secluded area hidden in plain sight, full of secrets, now on display in this book.
The project began in 2009, when I started to collect photos of 8-bit computers. Gradually, I got more interested in the context rather than the machines. For me this book is actually not about technology. It’s about the things around the computer - the room and the context. Our living conditions. Because it’s in places like this that books are written and scientific research is done. These kinds of places lead to political actions, fantastic music, art, new friends, inventions, love, and so much more. This is IRL!

Mr Crackles, Darlinghurst [26]

YOU GUYS!! I THINK IM IN LOVE!! His name? Mr Crackles!!
Mr Crackles (155 Oxford Street, Darlinghurst) is a magical place run by ex Wharf chefs Carlos Justo and Sam Horowitz and it is all kinds of amazing. Think unicorns and rainbows amazing. Their bread rolls are sourced from Laurent Bakery and the caramel apples on the counter are from Dem Apples Pty Ltd but everything else is made in house and it smells incredible.
Look at that pile of crackle!!! Just look at it! Bask in its glory!
AND YOU CAN BUY IT BY THE CUP!!! And all for the heart stoppingly low price of $5! Insert all the superlatives of crunchy, golden and just plain delicious right here because damn just one bite and I was hooked. You will be too. Unless you’re vego then well, maybe skip this..
But we couldn’t just eat crackling now could we? (Well I could but Noods wouldn’t let me..) The Classic Pork Roll with Vietnamese Salad ($10) is a must, the crusty bread houses the Banh Mi style pickled vegetables but instead of the weird processed flat slices of meat it’s stuffed full of tender, juicy nubbins of pork and topped with pieces of that glorious crackling. The rolls come in 2 sizes ($7 for the small) but really, just get the normal size. Orrrr I may try the Manwich ($15) next time which has double the meat and half the salad mmm
We also got the roll of the month, the Philly Cheese Beef ($10), which had slices of tender corned beef, pickles and Philly cream cheese. I loved the corned beef buuuut I must admit that my mind automatically assumed the roll would be more like a Philly Cheese Steak, you know, with melty cheese? It was still tasty though!
We ended up getting the small Wagyu Beef roll ($7) for the road which was filled with braised meaty goodness, beetroot, spinach and relish. Normally I have issues with beetroot but oddly the flavours worked and I regretted getting the small roll not the normal size lol
Mr Crackles opens till the wee early hours on Fri & Sat which means no more dodgy late night maccas runs down Oxford St! I want to try the rest of the menu esp the Hotdogs and the Lamb Rolls but I know it’ll be hard to go past the Classic Pork Roll…
How to Pronounce Haute Couture
Fergus NoodleI already shared this in Sharetron but it is still funny. Are we using Sharetron? Are we double sharing? What is happening?

Fergus NoodleI think judges would be be unable to do this. In Australia they moved to make the family court more friendly for people and I remember watching a video of some court proceedings and the magistrate was obviously assisting one party and our tutor was like this is a bad idea, there will be another trial after this. What people need to do is contact an organisation that provides free legal assistance.
Mr. Presley lost his job in the recession and fell way behind on support payments for his four children. In 2011, he was jailed after a court proceeding without a lawyer in which he said he could not pay what he owed. He was brought back to court, shackled, every month or two. Each time, he said he still could not pay. Each time, he was sent back.
A year later, he contacted a public defender who handles only criminal cases but who sent his case to the Southern Center for Human Rights. Atteeyah Hollie, a lawyer there, got him released that same day, helped him find work and set up a payment plan.
An important service lawyers can provide defendants like Mr. Presley is knowledge of what courts want — receipts of medical treatment, evidence of a job search, bank account statements. On their own, many people misstep when facing a judge.
In Adel, Ga., a town of 5,000, child support court meets monthly. On a recent morning, a dozen men in shackles and jail uniforms faced Chuck Reddick, a state prosecutor, on their second or third round in court.
Left unsaid here is that American judges are apparently unwilling or unable to puzzle out “If I send a guy to jail he probably can’t pay his child support” on their own, or are unwilling or unable to tell defendants “Have a family member or friend provide the court with evidence of a job search and you’ll be released.”
One of the things I think about a lot is the gulf between what America is and what we want America to be. (To illustrate, most recently I pointed out that people want America to be a land of hip restaurants, but it is a land of Applebee’s.) This is the second comment on that NYT article:
Using my taxpayer dollars to defend someone accused of a crime is a whole different ballgame than giving someone free legal counsel when they can’t pay their mortgage. No more entitlements - people need to step up to the plate and take personal responsibility for the issues in their lives.
This is not a country where that is an uncommon opinion. This is not a country where it is some tragic mistake that you do not stand a chance at a reasonable bail if you do not have an attorney with you. This is a country where you can spend a year in jail when there are simple steps that will get you released in a day. This is America, dude.
Roti Wrapped Smoked Bean Feast
This is an excellent recipe that I created, which has brought a huge smile to my face, because my young discerning daughter is the best barometer I have in the short term when I have just created something new, and my partner is even more discerning. They both gave it a resounding thumbs up ! And I also know I have high standards to meet when I think of you all out there. As you may have noticed by now, I am not conventional or a conformist in my kitchen – if a particular ingredient springs to mind and ‘feels right’, then I add it, and 99.9% of the time, it works. This gives me the confidence to create just about anything. Onwards we go – enjoy and share with your loved ones – or, just be a little cheeky and treat yourself to the lot ! And please come back with your comments here. Thanks !
Serves around 3 people
INGREDIENTS FOR THE SMOKED BEAN FEAST SAUCE
around 2 Tbsp olive oil
3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 medium red onion, finely chopped
1 400g tin borlotti beans (around 2 cups) – feel free to soak and boil your own beans
1 tsp smoked paprika (try Chiquilin in the US, or this link for the UK)
1 cup tinned sweetcorn (of your choice)
salt to taste
1 tsp curry powder
1 tsp margarine of your choice
4 to 6 medium chestnut mushrooms, sliced thinly
1 small to medium sized red pepper, chopped small
METHOD
- Heat your olive oil in a skillet pan, then fry your onion and garlic for a couple of minutes, mixing frequently.
- Then add your spices, and allow them to give off their flavours.
- Next, add your mushrooms and margarine, and allow them to cook.
- Now add your red peppers, and allow to cook for around 2 to 3 minutes, stirring every so often.
- Finally, add the rest of your ingredients, lower the heat, and allow to cook through for 15 minutes. Then give it a good stir, taste for salt, and leave covered on the heat for a further 5 minutes.
- Your filling is now ready – allow it to rest, and make your roti in readiness for your meal.
Plain Roti
INGREDIENTS
2 cups plain unbleached flour
150 mL (5 fl oz) water – a little more if needed
2 Tbsp plain oil – vegetable or other of your choice (make sure it’s not a strong one, as it won’t work) – you can use canola if you wish
METHOD
- Place the flour in a food processor, and add the liquid a little at a time, until a ball is formed.
- Take the dough out of the processor, coat the ball with flour, wrap in cling film (plastic), and place in the fridge for a couple of hours.
- Remove from fridge, and, using clean hands, break off pieces large enough to form 2 inch balls.
- Roll them into round rotis on a clean surface, around 6 to 7 inches in diameter.
- Fry each one in a dry non-stick pan, pressing down with a piece of kitchen roll, to prevent your fingers from burning.
- When the pastry kind of bubbles up, turn it over and do the same thing.
- Remove each one, and place on a hot plate kept warm whilst you make the remaining ones.
- When your first one is ready, lie it down on a large flat plate, and stuff it with the bean filling. Roll it to your preference – if you wish, you can wrap grease-proof paper it. Repeat the same process with the other roti, and serve. Enjoy !
