22 Years Ago Today, Nolan Ryan Beat The Shit Out Of Robin Ventura

by Barry Petchesky
Patrick Kennedy

So awesome

You charge the mound because you’re furious. Because you want to hurt someone. You know you’ll be ejected, fined, suspended, but it’s all worth it for brief taste of revenge. You never do it thinking that it all might go horribly wrong, and you might wind up on the receiving end of one of the most iconic beatdowns in sports history. Robin Ventura was one of the finest third baseman to ever play the game of baseball. I can’t hear his name without picturing him in a headlock, being whaled upon by a 46-year-old man.

Junior Seau's Family Banned From Speaking At His Hall Of Fame Induction

by Timothy Burke
Patrick Kennedy

Ugh.

"The NFL, obviously, is keen to keep any mention of CTE or chronic brain injury out of the conversation; while the Pro Football Hall of Fame is an independent entity, the NFL is its biggest patron and the induction ceremony is an NFL Network production. The Hall of Fame executive director told the Times that 'Our mission is to honor the heroes of the game and Junior is a hero of the game. We’re going to celebrate his life, not the death and other issues.'"

Junior Seau’s induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame next month will feature a video celebrating his on-field accomplishments, but no mention of his football-caused brain injuries or his self-inflicted fatal gunshot wound in 2012. It also will not feature any words from his family members.

YouTube tweaks Android app to hide vertical video users' shame

by James Vincent
Patrick Kennedy

About dang time.

As sensible and not-at-all-reactionary lovers of tech, we all know that people who record videos vertically are the worst. But astoundingly, despite the opprobrium of millions of nerds, lots of people still shoot footage this way, presumably for the entirely sensible reason that that's the way you hold your phone. Apps like Periscope and Snapchat have embraced vertical footage and now YouTube is recognizing its worth too, fixing the way it shows full-screen vertical videos in its Android app.

Instead of uselessly rotating the footage 90 degrees when you click full-screen, YouTube now actually expands the video to fill your phone or tablet's display. As you can see with screen captures from this video, the new full-screen method (on the right) looks much better than the old way:

From left to right: a vertical video not playing in full-screen; how full-screen used to work; how it looks now.

The tweak is available in version 10.28 of the YouTube Android app (which you can find on APK Mirror if it's not yet available for you in the Play Store), although we're not sure when or even if the change is coming to iOS. The real question, though, is whether or not this will encourage bad habits. Vertical video would be fine in a world in which everyone only used their smartphones, but the orientation is still going to annoy people who watch YouTube and the like on horizontally-orientated laptops, monitors, and TVs. Of course, the easiest solution is just not caring at all. Good luck.

Newswire: Once again, Paul Rudd managed to get Mac And Me over on Conan O’Brien

by Marah Eakin
Patrick Kennedy

I love that he still does this. Here's the recent clip: https://youtu.be/H9fqZlo60_8

And here's its history: https://youtu.be/6bNzAgJMYVE

For the past god knows how many years because Paul Rudd doesn’t age, every time the actor appears on whatever show Conan O’Brien happens to host, he slips in an absolutely ridiculous clip from the terrible McDonald’s-sponsored film Mac And Me. It’s a whole thing. Most of the time, the clip is disguised as being from whatever movie Rudd’s ostensibly promoting, though O’Brien’s grown wise to Rudd’s game and seemingly still holds out hope that one of these days the actor might just show a clip from some new movie and not some dumb E.T. knockoff.

Thankfully for fans, though, Rudd perseveres. He was a guest on last night’s episode of Conan and, true to form, brought along a “clip” from his “new movie,” assuming Ant-Man somehow involves a kid in the runaway wheelchair. Rudd played like he wouldn’t ...

The Weakerthans break up

by brooklynvegan

Weakerthans

Anyone who follows The Weakerthans probably realized they've been slowing down -- they last played live in 2013 and last released an album in 2007 -- but now drummer Jason Tait broke the news that the band is officially broken up. He tweeted the following:

Word is getting out that The Weakerthans are done. Here's the song we used to take the stage to for years. Bye bye. https://t.co/00jrQ0oNNJ

— Jason Tait (@JasonjTait) July 14, 2015

Bummer! Maybe they'll come back after The Front Bottoms and Modern Baseball get famous and The Weakerthans' nasally, folky punk gets re-evaluated as prescient.

Singer John K. Samson has stayed active as a solo artist, most recently writing and performing a live score for the Neil Young-inspired piece, For the Turnstiles. He also was recently working on new music with Christine Fellows.

Liverpool Agree £49M Sterling Deal: Rodgers Confirms Player Departure

by Noel C
Patrick Kennedy

Nice piece of business for LFC.

At his first pre-season press conference, Brendan Rodgers confirmed a fee had been agreed for Raheem Sterling and that the player is now set to join Manchester City.

Having landed in Bangkok ahead of tomorrow’s match against a Thai All Star XI, Brendan Rodgers sat down to speak to the media for the first time ahead of the coming season. Unsurprisingly, following news of a £49M fee being agreed with Manchester City, the subject people wanted to head about most was Raheem Sterling.

"The situation is very simple," said Rodgers, feely acknowledging that Sterling’s departure was quite nearly settled with just the medical and player’s signing of a reported £200k per week deal still to go. "The club has agreed with another club a deal for Raheem to be transferred, and subject to medical it will go through."

Though none of that is surprising, it serves as one final piece of confirmation. Barring something truly strange, Sterling will officially be a City player in a matter of days at absolute most. What will be surprising, and perhaps even a touch controversial, will be Rodgers’ claims he had a strong relationship with the player until the end.

"Contrary to what was written, Raheem and I have stayed very strong in our relationship right up until he left," said the Liverpool manager. "There are no issues there. I spoke to Raheem at length before I left yesterday, and there is no problem at all, and like I said, the two clubs have now agreed a deal for him."

Bayern Munich turn on Douglas Costa-Cam at training [Video]

@ Davison - I remember this guy from years-ago version of Football Manager. Good to see FM got it (maybe-kinda) right.

Bayern Munich switched on Douglas Costa-Cam at training today.

The club’s media decided to home in on their new Brazilian attacking midfielder, who signed from Shakhtar Donetsk for €30 million.

Having gone a little stale and predictable last season, Guardiola is hoping Costa can bring some fresh energy and creativity to Bayern.

The 24-year old appeared to be concentrating at his absolute maximum in order to absorb Pep Guardiola’s coaching style and philosophy.

Newswire: Wil Wheaton to narrate the audiobook of Ready Player One author’s new novel

by Sam Barsanti

Today in news that could only be nerdier if it were also directing a movie about Han Solo, Prince Nerd of Nerdopolis, Wil Wheaton, will be narrating the audiobook version of Armada, Ready Player One author Ernest Cline’s new novel—which will be in stores next week. Armada is essentially a new version of The Last Starfighter or Ender’s Game, in that it’s about a kid who is so good at video games that he gets enlisted in an actual spaceship-based war, but the big twist this time around—like Ready Player One—is that this kid is obsessed with popular culture and goes out of his way to remind the reader of that. In other words, when a spaceship shows up, he doesn’t say, “Oh, wow, a totally original thing.” He says, “Oh, wow, just like in The Last Starfighter.”

Newswire: Danish music festival to turn pee to beer and back to pee

by Caitlin PenzeyMoog
Patrick Kennedy

It's the ciiiircle of liiiiife...

“From piss to pilsner” is the name of the project that will collect the urine of more than 100,000 attendees of the Danish music festival Roskilde, store it in special tanks, and ship it out to nearby barley farms to fertilize the plants used in local beer production.Yes, in the environmental utopia (well, at least compared to the U.S.) that is Denmark, getting wasted while camping at a music festival allows you to practice sustainability, help local farmers, and contribute to local beer production.

“If everything turns out as planned,” reads the Danish Agriculture & Food Council website, “guests at the Roskilde Festival 2017 will be served beer fertilized with their own urine.” To help out, festival goers need only pee in a long metal trough instead of anywhere else in the field, which leads to the only problem with this win-win-win-win situation: What about the ladies ...

So a while ago I was either watching a video on youtube or reading an article where someone was quoting Sojourner Truth, and I don’t even remember what the thing was, but in the comments section someone had written “look up her picture, she was OLD” and then they said something mean about her looks.  I thought, I mean, it’s pretty amazing to accuse and dismiss someone born in 1797 for being old and not hot enough to listen to.

Clickhole's parody newsgame simulates the gay love fest of ancient Roman battles

You are a seasoned Roman general in the year 31 AD. Your biceps and eight-pack glisten in the sunlight as the gods smile down upon you and promise bloody victory. Only you and your army stand between the Germanic invaders and your beautiful Roma. So you reach for your battle axe, grab a statue of Romulus and Remus suckling at their wolf-mother's teat, and kiss your boyfriend, Antonius, hard on the lips.

With Fight For The Glory Of Rome!, parody site Clickhole satirizes the attempts at a 'choose your own newsgame,' which many like the BBC have tried to use toward more serious ends. While debates over the marriage between news media and interactivity rage on, one thing remains pretty certain: choose your own adventure newsgames tend to lack a certain... weight when recreating the horrifying realities of something like an unwanted pregnancy. Buzzfeed tries to offset the self-seriousness of the choose your own newsgame in its very own Buzzfeed way, with thrillers such as Can You Survive A Day In The Life Of A House Cat? and Can You Survive This Party As An Introvert?.

But with Fight For The Glory Of Rome!, Clickhole outshines the competition in blinding brilliance. I'm not sure how or why, but it appears Clickhole is one of the only content creators—parody or not—who understand what this bastardized version of a classic videogame genre needs to actually work. Because the key to the choose your own adventure newsgames lies neither in an emotional draw (which is what BBC relies on) nor narcissism (which is what Buzzfeed typically relies on). The heart of the choose your own adventure newsgame lies in immediate and visible consequences to your actions. And, boy, does Fight For The Glory Of Rome deliver on that front in the most delightfully spectacular ways.

For example if the player bristles at the fact that your character turns out to be gay, the game gives you the option to demand a sexy female wife; even though, as FGoR! insists, "this Roman adventure is just as good whether you're gay or straight. It's a thrilling tale of blood and conquest, and your sexuality is completely beside the point." Still want that sexified lady-wife? Well, the game presents you with a middlefinger fail screen and text that reads: "Go fuck yourself, you bigoted fuck. Game over. You lose." While those seem like some harsh words, they ring with a sort of sweet truth. Just imagine the people insisting on a lady-wife in FGoR! are the same people who argue that all-white high fantasy is "historically accurate."

the love between a man and a man is presented as the furthest thing from ridiculous

Though FGoR! was published before Pride month and last Friday's historic supreme court decision, Clickhole's approach to the well-documented homosexuality of ancient Roman armies reads as sincere and from a place of love rather than mockery. Of course, ridiculous things always happen around the relationship. But the love between a man and a man is presented as the furthest thing from ridiculous, especially in a world with intervening gods and random scuffles with squirrels. As the player, you are made a better general by having your love and second in command, Antonius, by your side. He frequently helps you defeat foes, in otherwise impossible battles.

FGoR! shines in everything it sets out to do. As a satire of the choose your own newsgame pseudo-genre, it often leaves the player with cumbersome blocks of information dumps. As a choose your own text adventure, this is a pretty exciting and robust narrative system, all things considered—I mean, at certain times, it even requires checkpoints (which obviously come in the form of impassioned kisses between you and Antonius!). But above all, as a hybrid war epic-bromance-rom-com, this genre-bending tale will engage all walks of people with all sorts of interests.

You can play the 'clickventure' Fight For The Glory Of Rome! for free on your browser.

Monopoly getting movie penned by writer of Gattaca and The Truman Show

by Brian Crecente
Patrick Kennedy

If this can follow Rich Uncle Pennybags through a dystopian subconscious-controlled universe where he doesn't realize his entire existence is created and crafted as a reality show, then I'm on board.

Following in the footsteps of Hasbro's game-to-movie epic Battleship, the toy-maker today announced a deal with Lionsgate to bring Monopoly to the big screen.

No, I'm not kidding.

The good news is that the project has somehow attracted Andrew Niccol, who wrote the scripts for both The Truman Show and Gattaca, to write the boardgame's screenplay.

The movie will be produced by Lionsgate and Hasbro's Allspark Pictures and financed by Lionsgate.

"Hasbro is a partner with incredible global reach, one of the most compelling brand portfolios in the world, and a signature brand in Monopoly that has multigenerational appeal," Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-president Erik Feig said in a prepared statement. "Andrew Niccol is the ultimate...

Behold, 55 hours of music from the 90s, focused on alt-indie music, organized in chronological order. For logistical reasons, it's split up into three playlists:

Here are some notes on the list's construction as well as links for the Spotify versions. I was 16 in 1990 and this was exactly the kind of music I listened to for most of the decade. I'm actually afraid to listen...I don't know what secrets these tracks will unlock in the dark reaches of my soul.

punk drummer Brooks Headley opened mega-hot, Helen Mirren-approved all-veggie Superiority Burger in the E. Village

Universal Order of Armageddon

Brooks Headley has drummed in a bunch of punk bands, including Universal Order of Armageddon and Born Against. Lately, though, he's been known for his cullinary skills. He was Pastry Chef at Mario Batali's fanciest restaurant, Del Posto, where he won the James Beard Award for "Outstanding Pastry Chef" in 2013. Having been a vegetarian on the road with nothing to eat, he began playing around with a veggie burger recipe. He told Wondering Sound last year:

I've eaten a lot of veggie burgers, and they're usually pretty terrible. We were playing around [in the kitchen] one day a couple of years ago, and I ended up figuring out this [recipe], and tweaking it, and then feeding it to the people who worked in the kitchen -- just, "Hey, try this thing I'm making in the back." And we're talking about in the middle of service, you know? We have a five-minute break, so you'll throw some stuff together, throw it on some bread. It was funny, because when the meat cooks started to request veggie burgers, I knew I was onto something. The meat guys are the meat guys. They don't eat any fucking vegetable, period. It kind of developed that way. Now it's this fun thing I get to do every once in a while, if I can convince someone to let me take over their space. That [project] definitely is through music. I mean, I wouldn't be into veggie burgers if it wasn't for punk rock.
He opened the Superiority Burger pop-up on Eldridge St. last year which was an instant, line-forming hit. He left Del Post in order to open a permanent Superiority Burger location, at 430 East 9th St between 1st and A, which opened last night. Eater sent their three (omnivore) reviewers, all of which sang its praises. Says Robert Sietsema (himself formerly of NYC indie rock band Mofungo):
As the menu board excitedly proclaims, throwing punctuation to the winds, "Everything is vegetarian a lot is accidentally vegan just ask!" The namesake burger ($6) is quite a different animal than the one that first appeared on the scene two years ago. The present patty looks just like beef and has a nutty and grainy texture and savor. The bun is squishy and the toppings are limited to mustard and dill pickles, making it more Whataburger than White Castle. It is unqualifiedly delicious.
Not 100% up to full-speed, Superiority Burger is currently open from 6-10 PM.

Done Deal: Arsenal have agreed a £10.9m fee with Chelsea for Petr Cech [Sky Sports]

by Benjamin Newman
Patrick Kennedy

@asdavison - Thoughts?

Over twenty four hours after the Daily Mail first announced that Arsenal had signed Petr Cech from Chelsea, Sky Sports have repeatedly the ‘done deal’ on Tuesday night.

According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal paid Chelsea £11m for Cech.

Sky Sports have basically confirmed that final price tag, reporting that the Gunners shelled out £10.9m for the 33-year-old stopper.

It’s worth noting, that at the time of writing neither Arsenal, Chelsea or Petr Cech himself have announced the imminent transfer.

Noticeably, Petr Cech earlier on Tuesday retweeted a message that stated he’d personally confirm the transfer when the ink was finally put to paper.

Whenever the signing eventually gets confirmed once and for all, the deal could be enormous for the Gunners.

For arguably the first time since David Seaman, Arsenal will have a top class goalie between their sticks: a player whom John Terry believes will help Arsenal to an additional 12-15 points in the 2015-16 season.

Read the tweet from Sky Sports below, together with video from SSN on the story.

The Stonewall Inn Is Now Officially a New York City Landmark

by Greg Morabito
Patrick Kennedy

Very awesome

What an awesome way to kick off Pride Week 2015.

This morning, the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission unanimously agreed to give The Stonewall Inn official New York City landmark status. The bar — which was the stage for historic gay rights protests in 1969 — is the first-ever space to get the city landmark designation because of its connection to LBGT culture. As Newsweek notes, the Stonewall is already a National Historic Landmark, and it's a member of the National Register of Historic Places. But the city landmark status will further protect the tavern from any developments in the neighborhood that could affect the building.

Michael Devonshire, a member of the Landmarks Preservation Commission, remarked: "This fantastic spot represents that period of strength and dignity for the LGBT community that absolutely deserves our resignation and protection." The decision coincides with the start of LGBT Pride Week in New York City.

Head over to Curbed NY for a full play-by-play of today's decision.

Newswire: Horrible sounding 90sFest to help Williamsburg reach peak irony this fall

Wow this is awful

Williamsburg, Brooklyn may have just reached peak irony. This September, the neighborhood so hip that it’s not even hip anymore will host 90sFest, a celebration of all things 34-year olds remember and 23-year-olds kind of, sort of at least remember the concept of. With musical headliners like the bread-addled Smash Mouth, Coolio, Lisa Loeb, Naughty By Nature, Tonic, and the surviving members of Blind Melon, the fest promises hours of passable aural entertainment. That is assuming, of course, that these bands just play their hits and get off the stage. Pauly Shore is emceeing that stage as well, because of course he is.

Other annoying-sounding activities at 90sFest include a Mario Kart tournament and an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest crowd forcing themselves to dance the “Macarena” at once. Admission starts at $60 (!) and runs all the way up to $150 for VIP tickets ...
