Conspiracy theories, wonky rumors, doubts buzz around Zika, hassle WHO

by Beth Mole
Philip.paulsson

That's the prettiest mosquito I've ever seen!

With notable gaps in scientists’ understanding of Zika, there have been plenty of pet theories, ridiculous rumors, doubts, and fears to fill the spaces. Among the ideas circulating as the mosquito-born virus continues to spread in the Western hemisphere, rumors have swirled that Zika’s emergence is the making of mad scientists who unleashed genetically engineered mosquitoes or that it's from drinking water “tainted” with a harmless, mosquito-killing insecticide. Another theory says it's a Scrooge-like plot by the one percent to decrease the surplus population.

While the World Health Organization and other experts have quickly smacked down those more far-fetched explanations—usually with responses that include “ridiculous,” “not credible,” and “no scientific basis”—other theories have been a little harder to bat away as scientists await more data. In particular, there’s lingering speculation that the commingling of Zika and dengue viruses may be to blame for Zika’s suspected link to microcephaly—a birth defect that leaves babies with malformed heads and brains. On the other hand, there are persistent rumblings among media and some scientists that the alarming uptick in microcephaly in Brazil, which is currently seeing an explosive outbreak of Zika, may simply be due to poor medical reporting.

Amid the competing chatter and conjecture, the WHO is attempting to coordinate emergency international efforts to fight the virus’ spread, treat those affected, and keep the facts straight. On Wednesday, the organization put out a $56 million plan (PDF) to get it all done—with the largest chunk, $15.4 million, going to communications. As part of those communication efforts, "[n]ews and social media channels will be monitored and analysed to identify audience concerns, knowledge gaps, rumours, and misinformation,” the agency wrote. The rest of the money will go to surveillance, mosquito control, healthcare for the affected, research, and coordination.

This Mom Caught Her Little Girl Turning Her Baby Sister Into A Zebra With A Permanent Marker

by Allison Bagg

“I love being zebras!”

Amy Herrmann knew her kids were up to no good when it was unusually silent in the house. She looked for her kids, only to discover her 3-year-old had drawn on her 18-month-old sister with permanent marker to turn her "into a zebra."

The Australian mom filmed the aftermath of her daughter Sovereign's art project on her sister Pippen and posted it on Facebook. It has since been viewed nearly 10 million times.

When Hermann asked Sovereign what was going on, she was like, "DUH! Mom, the baby is a zebra now."

When Hermann asked Sovereign what was going on, she was like, "DUH! Mom, the baby is a zebra now."

Obviously.

Hermann told BuzzFeed News she works as photographer and visual artist, so their home is "generally quite creative" — but she said she's not sure where the "zebra" idea came from.

"We do a lot of drawing and painting, though not usually on our baby sister," she said. "I worked as a face painter for some time also, so it's possible that's where the idea to transform her sister came from too. Though she usually requests to be a tiger, so the zebra explanation was quite unexpected."

The Only Known Jaguar In The U.S. Is Roaming Around Arizona

by Jason Wells
Philip.paulsson

Looks like I'm going hunting next time I go visit my Mom in Arizona!

The jaguar’s Spanish names translates to “The Boss.”

Video footage of the only known wild jaguar in the U.S. was released Wednesday, showing the large cat roaming in wooded areas near Tucson, Arizona.

The roughly 7-year-old animal is an extremely rare track for researchers.

While El Jefe is one of only four or five jaguars that have been spotted in the U.S. over the last 20 years, he is the only one to actually be documented, according to the Center for Biodiversity, which released the footage.

Researchers used a specially trained scat detection dog in their effort to catch El Jefe on video, spending three years tracking the big cat in rugged mountains, collecting data, and refining camera sites.

"Studying these elusive cats anywhere is extremely difficult, but following the only known individual in the U.S. is especially challenging," Chris Bugbee, a biologist with Conservation CATalys, which works with the center on the project, said in a statement.

Center for Biological Diversity / Via Facebook: CenterforBioDiv

A Canadian mining company is pushing to develop a massive open-pit copper mine in the heart of El Jefe's territory, and destroy thousands of acres of federally protected jaguar habitat in the process, according to the Center for Biological Diversity.

Researchers have been able to determine that El Jefe is currently an adult male jaguar and in prime condition.

"These glimpses into his behavior offer the keys to unlocking the mysteries of these cryptic cats," said Aletris Neils, executive director of Conservation CATalyst. "Every new piece of information is important for conserving northern jaguars and we look forward to building upon on these data so that we can collectively make better decisions on how to manage these fascinating and endangered cats."

21 Most Anticipated Movies From The Cannes Film Festival

Philip.paulsson

Can someone remind me to put these all on my netflix queue once these movies are actually out? So in say...8 months? Thanks guys!

From Salma Hayek as a heart-eating queen to Matthew McConaughey as a suicidal traveler, it looks like it’s going to be a good year at the world’s greatest film event.

The Cannes Film Festival is glamorous, glitzy, and famous as an uncompromising showcase of the best cinema in the world. Even if you don't get to go (and it is not easy to do so), it's worthwhile to keep an eye on a place where the movies that will shape the year first make their premieres. BuzzFeed News will be reporting from Cannes this year, and here's a list of some of the film we can't wait to see.

The Lobster

The Lobster

Dogtooth, Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos' 2009 feature about a trio of twentysomething siblings whose parents have raised them in careful isolation, was the kind of movie you laughed uncomfortably during and had terrible nightmares about later. His new movie sounds even more absurdist, taking place in a dystopian future (as if there's any other kind) in which captive single people are given 45 days to find a partner or risk being transformed into an animal. Lanthimos is working with international stars for The Lobster, which will be his first in English, and it stars Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, Blue Is The Warmest Color's Léa Seydoux, Ben Whishaw, and John C. Reilly.

Protagonist Pictures

Tale of Tales

Tale of Tales

John C. Reilly's clearly been putting in some time with international filmmakers — in addition to The Lobster, he'll be appearing alongside Salma Hayek, Vincent Cassel, and Toby Jones in Tale of Tales, from Italy's Matteo Garrone. The English-language film is loosely based on a 17th-century collection of fairytales. But Garrone, whose previous work includes biting fare about his home country like Reality and organized-crime saga Gomorrah, is not one to turn out a Disney-style movie, and the international trailer is packed with striking, disturbing imagery, including Hayek eating a giant heart.

Archimede / Le Pacte

The Sea of Trees

The Sea of Trees

Gus Van Sant's last film, the Matt Damon-John Krasinski fracking drama Promised Land, came and went without generating much of a stir. His minimalist new movie looks to be more provocative, starring Mr. McConaissance himself as an American man who travels to the Aokigahara forest at the base of Mount Fuji in Japan to kill himself in a location so notorious for this that it's also called the "Suicide Forest." Ken Watanabe plays a fellow would-be suicide that Matthew McConaughey's character meets among the trees. The "two men in the wilderness" angle suggests shades of Van Sant's 2002 film Gerry, though given the set-up, this film is likely to start in a darker place.

News in Brief: Takeout Burrito Shielded From Cold As Though It Were Week-Old Newborn

Philip.paulsson

Hahha I definitely do this.

NEW YORK—Clutching the tinfoil-wrapped bundle tightly to her chest as she emerged from a local taqueria, area woman Caroline Parrish tenderly shielded her takeout burrito from the cold as though it were a week-old newborn, sources confirmed Friday. “I’ll get you home soon, my love—just a few more minutes,” whispered Parrish, nestling the rolled mass of spicy steak and beans within the folds of her jacket to ensure it could not be chilled by the wind as she carefully sidestepped patches of ice and affectionately cradled her cherished lunch item to ensure its fragile form was fully supported. “Don’t worry, I’ve got you.” At press time, Parrish was terrified to realize her burrito had been switched with someone else’s.

Idaho bill calls for Bible in schools for astronomy, biology, geology

by John Timmer
Philip.paulsson

This is why we're screwed as a country.

Politicians are often criticized for not living up to their promises. For the Idaho Republican Party, however, doing so may end up leaving schools open to constitutional battles.

Last year, the state Republican party's central committee officially endorsed using the Bible in the state's public schools. Although the Bible has valid educational uses in a number of classes, the resolution included a huge laundry list of possible topics where it could apply, and those included a number of sciences, specifically astronomy, biology, and geology.

At the time, it wasn't at all clear how an ancient religious text would inform modern scientific understanding. But that hasn't stopped the Idaho Senate's Education Committee, which has proposed a bill with language that precisely mimics the central committee's document. The only significant additional text in the bill involves repealing existing Idaho education law in order to make room for the Bible.

Errr, untrue. It only comes with 100GB of cloud storage.

How has this not been invented yet?!

This is the Robin. It's a new Android phone that has smart software, so you don't have to worry about running out of space.

Robin is made by a company you've never heard of called Nextbit. I know what you're thinking: Another Android device? Aren't there already thousands of those? (24,000, actually.)

But Robin is different for two reasons: it's really freaking pretty and it runs a unique version of Android that analyzes how you use your phone, then sends stuff you don't need (like an app you haven't opened in months or a photo from a week ago) to ~the cloud~ (AKA a giant building full of servers).

Nextbit

I had the chance to try out Robin for a week, and was immediately hooked.

I had the chance to try out Robin for a week, and was immediately hooked.

I was sold before I even turned on the device. The mint version's hardware is playfully colorful. I'd describe its aesthetic as "minimalist kawaii." ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's sleek. It's eye-catching. Its material is soft to the touch. It's just... really attractive, which is not an adjective I typically use to describe Android devices.

The phone is definitely a conversation piece. This morning, while I was waiting in line for coffee: "Cute case. What is it?" "No, it's a phone, actually." "No way, really?" (Yes, way.)

Nicole / BuzzFeed

The phone's software is awesome, too. When Robin is plugged into a charger and connected to Wi-Fi, it'll backup apps and photos automatically so you never have to delete content to make room for more.

Skiers hit the slopes in LED snowsuits and it looks so, so awesome

Philip.paulsson

That is pretty sweet.

After the insane amount of snow that hit the U.S. over the past week and reports of more to come, the powder is bound to be fresh for skiers and snowboarders hitting the mountain this weekend.

If you need any more reason to get psyched before carving up the slopes, here's a cool video from a while back of two skiers who know how to do it with high-tech style. Thanks to a couple of LED-laden snowsuits, their night skiing becomes a masterpiece of extreme visual coolness in this video commissioned by Philips to promote its Ambilight technology.
