16 Things You Shouldn't Say To Guys Who Can't Grow Beards

This Incredible App Might Just Make Us All Read Faster

Philip.paulsson

Neat idea, but I wouldn't want to read a book that I'm reading for pleasure like this. Could be useful for studying though, I imagine.

With the Spritz speed reader, you could read an entire novel in 90 minutes.

Here's the technology. Doesn't look much, does it?

It can be integrated onto mobile devices, wearables, apps, and websites. And Frank Waldman, the CEO of Spritz, thinks it'll change the way we take in our information online.

Jena Malone Is As Big Of A "Catching Fire" Fan As We All Are

Philip.paulsson

Is the scene where she's naked on the elevator from a better angle included? Might be worth buying!

The actress reveals the life lessons she learned from playing Johanna Mason as she readies the next phase of her career. Plus, watch an exclusive clip of Malone on set from the The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Blu-ray, in stores March 7.

Getty Images

"Can I just fangirl out for a second?" Jena Malone asked before talking about the Blu-ray for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, as though she were one of its many admirers as opposed to one of its stars. "There is so much behind-the-scenes footage. We had so much fun on Catching Fire that I'm just excited to sit down and watch." And really, who could blame her for fangirling about her own movie, the first with a female lead to top the annual box office in 40 years?

While the power of Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) is undeniable, Malone's character — badass District 7 tribute Johanna Mason — was Catching Fire's biggest breakout, thanks to an intoxicating mix of venom and vulnerability. But what the 29-year-old actress put into the movie paled in comparison to what she got out of it.

"I learned so much about myself through playing Johanna," she told BuzzFeed. "I knew I had strength as an actor, but Johanna taught me how incredibly strong I could be emotionally, that I could intimidate an entire room with just the energy I walked in with. You can really do some damage through how you carry yourself in life."

Which Superhero Are You?

Philip.paulsson

I have a feeling this is because I picked poutine. He's Canadian, right?

You got: Wolverine
"You’re a straight shooter, but you don’t trust people very easily. That’s something that, in your opinion, needs to be earned. You’ve got something of a tough exterior, but you’re a good person, and if you come across as a little too gruff sometimes, well, that’s only because you’re focusing the energy you’d use to be nice on stuff that’s more important."

This Is The Extraordinary Memorial To The Victims Of Norway's Utøya Massacre

Artist Jonas Dahlberg will create a permanent cut in the headland to remember the victims of Anders Breivik.

This is the winning proposal to commemorate the victims of Norway's July 22 massacre, the 2011 attack in which 77 people died after far-right militant Anders Breivik bombed an Oslo government building before committing a mass shooting on the island of Utøya.

The artist Jonas Dahlberg won the competition to build a memorial to the Utøya victims by proposing a permanent cut in the headland at Sørbråten, which overlooks the island.

Jonas Dahlberg Studio

The judges unanimously backed his proposal to create a cut that will "recreate the physical experience of something being taken away" while also reflecting "the abrupt and permanent loss of those who died on Utøya".

Jonas Dahlberg Studio

Visitors will be able to access the cutting and see the names of those who died, which will be engraved on the opposite side of the excavation.

Jonas Dahlberg Studio

The cut will be three-and-a-half-metres wide and will make it impossible to reach the end of the headland. Earth removed from the excavation will be taken to Oslo and used to build the foundation for a memorial to the government workers who died in the capital city.

The judges concluded that Dahlberg's proposal is "radical and brave, and evokes the tragic events in a physical and direct manner".

A Host On The Kremlin-Funded RT Spoke Out Against Russia's Invasion Of Ukraine Monday Night

Philip.paulsson

Good for her!

(If she survives the next week)

“What Russia did is wrong,” said Abby Martin on Monday evening during her show on RT, the Kremlin-funded television network.

youtube.com

"Before we wrap up the show, I wanted to say something from my heart about the ongoing political crisis in Ukraine and Russia's military occupation of Crimea. Just because I work here for RT doesn't mean I don't have editorial independence, and I can't stress enough how strongly I am against any state intervention in a sovereign nation's affairs. What Russia did is wrong. I admittedly don't know as much as I should about Ukraine's history or the cultural dynamics of the region, but what I do know is that military intervention is never the answer. I will not sit here and apologize or defend military aggression. Furthermore, the coverage I've seen of Ukraine has been truly disappointing from all sides of the media spectrum and rife with disinformation. Above all, my heart goes out to the Ukrainian people, who are now wedged as pawns in the middle of a global power chess game — they're the real losers here. All we can do now is hope for a peaceful outcome to a terrible situation, and prevent another full-blown cold war between multiple super powers. Until then, I'll keep telling the truth as I see it."

Dutch Coach Says U.S. Failed At Speedskating Because Of Football, A "Sport That Sucks"

Philip.paulsson

Haha wow.

This guy!

Jillert Anema (left).

Jasper Juinen / Getty

CNBC spoke this week with Dutch speedskating coach Jillert Anema about his country's crazy-dominant performance at the Sochi games — 21 medals, six of them gold, with a 22nd already guaranteed in men's team pursuit. And Anema has a hot take on why the Dutch are performing so much better than the Americans, who've been disappointing from Shani Davis on down, in the sport.

"You have a lot of attention on a foolish sport like American football and you waste a lot of talent, athletic talent, on a sport that is meant to kill each other, to injure each other. ... You're so narrow-minded, and then you want to compete against the world [in other sports] when you waste a lot of time, good talent on a sport that sucks."

Shows how much this guy knows! Getting injured isn't the point of football. It's just something that happens to occur like 40 or 50 times a game, by accident, because of Toughness.

Anema also made some frankly ridiculous comments about the relative value of Olympic medals:

"I think that the gold medal in speedskating is just as valuable as the gold medal in basketball, and we won 22. You'll never win 22 in basketball."

In point of fact, the United States has won 21 of the 28 gold medals awarded in men's and women's basketball, with numbers 22 and 23 on the way the next time the Summer Olympics come around, so think about that, Holland.

Jillert Anema needs to check himself before he "gets dunked on by LeBron and has to go to the hospital"s himself.
