William Orbit told Rolling Stone: "When I first played it in my studio, I opened a trove of delights provided by the greatest of musicians...Hearing Michael Jackson's vocals was stirring. So vivid, so cool, and poignant, it was like he was in the studio singing live. With Freddie's vocal solo on the mixing desk, my appreciation for his gift was taken to an even higher level."

September 18th, 2014: Hey, remember when I wrote a choose-your-own-path version of Hamlet called To Be or Not To Be? SURE YOU DO. (YOU CAN BUY THIS BOOK RIGHT NOW, BY THE WAY). Well that book was launched through Kickstarter and one of the rewards was me painting a painting for you (I am a terrible but enthusiastic painter) and a very classy gent named Boyd Multerer backed at that level! It took me a while to paint it (and even longer to mail it, I'M SORRY BOYD) but it arrived yesterday and now I can share it with you! The request was "T-Rex playing Xbox" so now T-Rex playing the Xbox One is CANONICAL. Thank you Boyd!

Do You Actually Enjoy Your Job?

Philip.paulsson

And in the vein of work-related posts, I went from the worst job, telemarketer, to the best job:
"You got: Loves It, Can’t Live Without It
You love what you do, the people you work with, and the company you work for. You really lucked out, and only worry about somehow losing this sweet gig."

Which is kinda true. Though it's been getting a little worse lately.

We promise not to send your result directly to the HR department of your company.

Minnesota Man Films TSA Attempt To Screen Him After He Lands

Philip.paulsson

Getting another screening *after* you get off a plane is pretty fucking stupid.

Kahler Nygard, 22, was asked to step aside for screening of his “body and bags” after his flight from Minneapolis landed in Denver. A TSA official said the incident is under review.

When Kahler Nygard's flight from Minneapolis landed in Denver Saturday, he was called to exit ahead of other passengers.

"No, I have not committed a crime," he said into his cell phone camera as he walked past rows of passengers.

youtube.com

He was met by a TSA officer who asked him to step aside for screening that may not have been completed in Minneapolis.

youtube.com

TSA officers do not have the authority to make arrests. In the video, Nygard asks if he is being detained, or if he is free to go.

"No, you are not, sir," the officer said.

The officer later clarifies that Nygard is not being detained, but if he does not comply with instructions, local police will be called.

Denver police never contacted him, Nygard told CopBlock.org.

Fox 9 in Minneapolis reported that Nygard was on a secondary screening list, which should have gotten him a more thorough security check before he boarded.

The TSA would not discuss the watch list or whether Nygard was named on it. Some red flags may include buying a one-way ticket or paying in cash, the station reported.

Nygard said he used to be on a no-fly list, but the reason for the additional screening was not known.

This Video Will Make You Hallucinate And This Is Why

Philip.paulsson

That video. Woah. Not sure I'd call it a hallucination though....

Important: Do NOT watch this if you’re prone to seizures.

youtube.com

What happens is that the nerve cells that signal motion in a single direction begin to get tired after several seconds. According to the IllusionWorks website:

Your brain represents a sensory quality, such as motion, brightness, color, or depth, not in terms of the firing of one group of neurons, but in terms of the electrical activity of one group of neurons relative to the electrical activity of another group of neurons. For example, the activity of neurons coding for clockwise motion relative to the activity of those coding for counterclockwise motion.

Clockwise motion is signaled by the fact that the neurons coding for clockwise movement fire more strongly than neurons coding for counterclockwise motion. If the clockwise neurons now fire less strongly because their electrochemical batteries run down after several seconds or more of continuous activity, the balance between these two groups is disrupted.

It's also known as the Loch Ness effect.

It's also known as the Loch Ness effect.

Over 150 years ago a scientist named Robert Addams looked at a waterfall on the side of the loch, which lies in the Scottish Highlands. He noticed that if he stared at it for long enough, it appeared as if the ground next to it was moving upwards.

Video: Liquid Metal Flows Into Different Forms, T-1000-Style

A team of researchers report that they understand a property of a liquid metal that allows them to manipulate it like the T-1000 from Terminator 2 and even build "scale models" of the violent automaton.

Chemists at North Carolina State University have observed that when they apply an electric charge to a gallium alloy (which is naturally liquid at room temperature) in water, they are able to manipulate its shape. After three years of studying the unusual reaction they figured out how it works: an oxide coating on the surface forms when the voltage is applied, then disappears without a trace when the voltage is removed. This coating changes the surface tension of the metal where it meets the water.

"Scientifically this is one of the most exciting projects I've ever worked on because nothing in the literature explained it," Dr. Michael Dickey, an investigator on the study, tells Popular Science.

"On a fluid droplet two primary sources dominate shape and behavior," Dr. Dickey says:  "Gravity and surface tension. If you can control surface tension you can control the shape of the liquid."

Dr. Dickey says modifying the shape of liquid metals could have broad practical applications. Circuits could transform in real time to do different tasks. Mirrors in cameras and telescopes could change shape to refine focus. And, in the long run, similar techniques might be discovered in other materials.

The gallium alloy's oxide surface is too strong in air to allow for the same effect out of water, but researcher believe a similar effect might be produced in other materials under different conditions.

Don't expect a T-1000 marching (or slithering or galloping) down your block any time soon though. In the gallium alloy this effect is only possible on very small scales. Once too much mass gets involved, says Dr. Dickey, "gravity takes over" and the whole system collapses.

You can watch a video of the process below:

The little-known Soviet mission to rescue a dead space station

by Ars Staff
Philip.paulsson

If you've got the time, this is a pretty cool story.

The view of Salyut 7 from Soyuz T-13 after undocking and beginning the journey home.

The following story happened in 1985 but subsequently vanished into obscurity. Over the years, many details have been twisted, others created. Even the original storytellers got some things just plain wrong. After extensive research, writer Nickolai Belakovski is able to present, for the first time to an English-speaking audience, the complete story of Soyuz T-13’s mission to save Salyut 7, a fascinating piece of in-space repair history.

It’s getting dark, and Vladimir Dzhanibekov is cold. He has a flashlight, but no gloves. Gloves make it difficult to work, and he needs to work quickly. His hands are freezing, but it doesn’t matter. His crew’s water supplies are limited, and if they don’t fix the station in time to thaw out its water supply, they’ll have to abandon it and go home, but the station is too important to let that happen. Quickly, the sun sets. Working with the flashlight by himself is cumbersome, so Dzhanibekov returns to the ship that brought them to the station to warm up and wait for the station to complete its pass around the night side of the Earth. [1]

He’s trying to rescue Salyut 7, the latest in a series of troubled yet increasingly successful Soviet space stations. Its predecessor, Salyut 6, finally returned the title of longest manned space mission to the Soviets, breaking the 84-day record set by Americans on Skylab in 1974 by 10 days. A later mission extended that record to 185 days. After Salyut 7’s launch into orbit in April 1982, the first mission to the new station further extended that record to 211 days. The station was enjoying a relatively trouble-free start to life. [4]
