6 Talented Artists Creating Magnificent Miniature Worlds

by alice

Throughout the years, we've seen tons of artists who create whimsical adventures in a miniature-sized world. Using everyday materials as well as toy props, these artists transport us into another world, sometimes even making us questions what is real and what is fake. Today, we've rounded up six of the most talented artists who are equally skilled at setting up miniature scenes as they are about snapping the perfect shot. Most of all these, these six are masterful storytellers, reminding us that magic can exist if we open up our minds and our hearts.

1. William Kass

Architect and photographer William Kass has created a lovely series called Minimize, where he takes miniature toy figures and places them in the regular world. His sweet compositions include men fishing for sushi to a ballerina dancing in a fanciful fountain of a shower head. True to form, each of his photos are more whimsical than the last.

2. Christopher Boffoli

Seattle-based Christopher Boffoli is one of those photographers who's a cut above the rest. His fine art photos of miniature people have now been seen in more than 95 countries and can be spotted in galleries and private collections all around the world. His successful series, titled Big Appetites, not only has its own dedicated website but a book, as well.

3. Matthew Albanese

Perhaps there is no greater artist out there who can create such believable worlds than Matthew Albanese. For the last five years, Albanese has been meticulously making these highly detailed models for his series called Strange Worlds. “When I was young I was always very, very obsessed with movie miniatures and movie magic and things of small scale,” he told Flickr. One of the most mesmerizing shots is of a lightning storm over a lake. Albanese used a piece of plexiglas, painted black, and etched bolts of lightning on it so that light could dramatically flash through.

4. Slinkachu

“I've always been interested in small things," Slinkachu told The Independent. “My dad made me a train set when I was younger but I was never really interested in the trains, it was always the figures, houses and trees that fascinated me.” London-based artist Slinkachu creates magnificent mini-worlds right on the street. The 33-year-old artist has spent the last six years shooting his witty scenes mostly in London. Interestingly, after he is done taking a photo of them, he leaves the little people on the street for anyone to find. With just a bit of superglue on each foot, the tiny models are ultimately left to find new homes..or fend for themselves.

5. Vincent Bousserez

We first came across the clever works of Vincent Bousserez back in February 2009 or 4 1/2 years ago. The Paris-based artist has since shot for luxury brand Louis Vuitton, making a name for himself worldwide with his creative and clever photos. Unlike others, Vincent isn't afraid to push the envelope; though many of his photos appear sweet, a fair share of them have a dark or mysterious undertone. His creative series is called Plastic Life.

6. Kurt Moses

Un Petit Monde is the name of the series Kurt Moses has created where he arranges tiny people in a larger-than-life world. Moses does not use tilt-shit photography or Photoshop, rather, he sets up his everyday scenes in the real world using natural light. The photographer, hailing from St. Paul, Minnesota, loves telling stories through his works, which he wants others to help him actively create. “My goal is simple," he says, "initiate a storyline and capture an evocative photo that allows the viewer to draw their own conclusions about the scenes they are observing.”

in orbit: A Gigantic Floating Installation by Tomás Saraceno

by Caroline Williamson
Kurts90

Finally something cool to see in Dusseldorf!

in orbit: A Gigantic Floating Installation by Tomás Saraceno

Artist and architect Tomás Saraceno (you know, the Cloud Cities guy) created a massive layered installation that’s suspended more than 25 meters (approx. 82 feet) in the air of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen museum in Düsseldorf, Germany. “in orbit” stretches across the piazza under the mammoth glass ceiling of the K21 Ständehaus with its three levels of steel wire netting. Situated on the three levels are six inflated spheres that range in size, with the largest being 27 feet in diameter.

Visitors to the museum can climb around the nets, if they dare, becoming a part of the surreal installation. If you’ve ever wanted to feel like you’re floating amongst the clouds, now’s your chance as the exhibition will be around until Autumn 2014 (estimated).

Whimsical Scenes Created with Real Fish Heads

by Pinar
Kurts90

creepy

Parisian contemporary artist Anne-Catherine Becker-Echivard does a little more than play with her food. The artist's ongoing body of work, known as Les Temps Modernes (translated as Modern Times), presents whimsical scenes featuring actual fish heads, which she later eats. In each eccentric frame, she simulates an absurd dramatization of human activities with the quirky visual aid of fish-headed puppets.

Becker-Echivard's configured photos reflect social and political issues with a sense of humor, mimicking the everyday lives of people. She is especially keen on recreating the assembly lines of laborers, commenting on our industrialized consumer society. She manages to address fairly serious topics in a playful manner. Dr. Didier Rouzeyrol poetically describes the artist's work: "German romanticism rescued by French lightness. // Sometimes innocence. // Sometimes intoxication. // The funny images, are never only funny. // The sad images, are never only sad. // There is always something else."

Intimate Photos of Lions Captured with a Rover Robot

by Pinar

The Serengeti Lion is a multimedia series by photographer Michael “Nick” Nichols and videographer Nathan Williamson that captures the Vumbi pride in Africa with the use of a robot. The project states: "A remote-control toy car and a rugged robot tank gave them an unobtrusive way to make images up close and at low angles. Two cameras were mounted on each device; Nichols controlled one and Williamson the other, a pairing that let the collaborators create a synchronized dance of photo and video."

Through the collection of images and the interspersed looping videos, we see a three-dimensional view of lions acting not only like the wild, roaring beasts we know them to behave like, but also as big cats lying around and gazing about like curious creatures. Of course, they do still have their untamed nature, but there's something intriguing about seeing these predators in their downtime. Being able to view footage of the ferocious felines staring right back at us with a questioning though nonthreatening look is a unique first-person point of view.

The two men behind the project made sure to incorporate their technology into the surroundings without actually disturbing the lions to catch their candid expressions. The lions were introduced to the sturdy robot, built to withstand an aggressive beating, who appeared to eventually show little interest in it. Williamson says, "[T]he lions were dignified and just arrogantly ignored it most of the time." Due to the robots' fairly seamless integration, the project was able to get in close and provide an intimate look at how these lions and their cubs soak in the rain, play in the sun, patiently sit in a field, and hunt at night.

Be sure to check out the fascinating videos over on the project's website.

It's back! Can you believe it's already been three years since we wrote about Red Bull Illume, the world's biggest photography contest for action and adventure sports? (Remember the incredible winners?) Beginning in June, Red Bull has been slowly leaking its top 250 finalists, and today, we're happy to announce that the gallery has been complete! We just spent the last few hours looking over each image and all we can say is, "Wow!"

Similar to last time, there are 10 different categories in this contest: Close Up, Creativity, Energy, Experimental, Illumination, Lifestyle, Playground, Sequence, Spirit, and Wings. From tens of thousands of entries, 50 finalists will be announced and invited to attend a grand ceremony in the city of Hong Kong where the winners will be unveiled. Though you'll have to wait for August 29 for all that, you can enjoy our top 20 right here. We love how each of these is either inspiring (in terms of travel and extreme sports) or artistic (check out the cool shadows and unique perspectives)!

Adorable Series of Babies Sucking on Lemons for the Very First Time

by alice
Kurts90

when life gives you lemons...

Starting to make its way around the web is this incredibly adorable series called Pucker of babies sucking on lemons for the very first time. Photographer David Wile captured the babies' priceless expressions which will make you do everything from purse your own lips to laugh out loud. Wearing just a bib on top and set against a blue background, the babies really show all of their emotions. Of course, it's safe to say that no babies were harmed in this production. In fact, some even seemed to enjoy the sensory shocking experience!

If you'll remember, David Wile is the same photographer who was behind Splash, the fun photo series documenting the hilarious expressions of people and animals who got a bucket of water poured on their heads. My guess is that he loves seeing authentic reactions.

Quirky Illustrations with Funny Messages

by Pinar

Minneapolis-based graphic designer Phil Jones, aka murraymullet, creates playful illustrations of objects and pets that will leave you smiling. The quirky drawings give a voice to inanimate objects like a trash can, transforming the waste receptacle into a refined connoisseur exclaiming, "Everything you bring me is garbage."

Even when Jones' characters aren't accompanied with a speech or thought bubble, there's a universal understanding of his funny message. A shocked and teary orange kissing an equally disturbed tube of toothpaste speaks volumes as we all know the wretched taste of their combination after brushing one's teeth.

A ‘Green’ Oasis in the Heart of Singapore

by twistedsifter
Kurts90

@les Davisons - new homestead for you!

Completed earlier this year by architecture and design firm FARM, Wall House is an oasis in the heart of the concrete jungle. Located in the highly urbanized city-state of Singapore, the home is surrounded by lush greenery with trees throughout and multiple green roofs.

The landscape design takes its inspiration from the philosophy of classical Chinese Gardens, where views are borrowed through cutouts and vistas and where sight lines and spaces begin to overlap.

The large property consists of a two-story block with the main living and master bedroom area, and a single-story block housing the entertainment areas of the house. The two volumes are linked together through a huge central courtyard.

Amazing Body Art Inspired by Nature

by Pinar

Fine art body painter Johannes Stötter blends his subjects into their surroundings by skillfully applying paint to their skin. He uses the human form as his canvas to both camouflage into their environments and mimic forms found in nature. The illusionary subjects in Stötter's growing collection of creations range from fruits and vegetables to trees, rocks, and wildlife.

Each piece that the artist completes reflects a unity between man and nature. His latest masterpiece uses five people, carefully composed within the frame, to depict a frog. Each person is positioned so perfectly that it is hard to even recognize the contours of their separate bodies at first. Check out the video, below, to see the five people disassemble from their collaborative effort.

15 Volcanic Eruptions as Seen from Space

by twistedsifter

A volcano is an opening, or rupture, in a planet’s surface or crust, which allows hot magma, volcanic ash and gases to escape from the magma chamber below the surface.

They are generally found where tectonic plates are diverging or converging. A mid-oceanic ridge, for example the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, has examples of volcanoes caused by divergent tectonic plates pulling apart; the Pacific Ring of Fire has examples of volcanoes caused by convergent tectonic plates coming together. Volcanoes can also form where there is stretching and thinning of the Earth’s crust in the interiors of plates.

There is no consensus among volcanologists on how to define an “active” volcano. The lifespan of a volcano can vary from months to several million years, making such a distinction sometimes meaningless when compared to the lifespans of humans or even civilizations.

Scientists usually consider a volcano to be erupting or likely to erupt if it is currently erupting, or showing signs of unrest such as unusual earthquake activity or significant new gas emissions. Most scientists consider a volcano active if it has erupted in the last 10,000 years (Holocene times). There are about 1500 active volcanoes in the world – the majority along the Pacific Ring of Fire – and around 50 of these erupt each year. An estimated 500 million people live near active volcanoes. [Source]

In the gallery below we look at a selection of Earth’s volcanoes from above. These stunning images were captured from various satellites as well as crew members aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The views from space offer a unique perspective of one of nature’s most awesome and terrifying events.

1. Sarychev Volcano, Russia

Photograph by NASA

A fortuitous orbit of the International Space Station allowed the astronauts this striking view of Sarychev volcano (Russia’s Kuril Islands, northeast of Japan) in an early stage of eruption on June 12, 2009. Sarychev Peak is one of the most active volcanoes in the Kuril Island chain and is located on the northwestern end of Matua Island.

Prior to June 12, the last explosive eruption had occurred in 1989 with eruptions in 1986, 1976, 1954 and 1946 also producing lava flows. Commercial airline flights were diverted from the region to minimize the danger of engine failures from ash intake. This detailed photograph is exciting to volcanologists because it captures several phenomena that occur during the earliest stages of an explosive volcanic eruption.

The main column is one of a series of plumes that rose above Matua Island (48.1 degrees north latitude and 153.2 degrees east longitude) on June 12. The plume appears to be a combination of brown ash and white steam. The vigorously rising plume gives the steam a bubble-like appearance; the surrounding atmosphere has been shoved up by the shock wave of the eruption. The smooth white cloud on top may be water condensation that resulted from rapid rising and cooling of the air mass above the ash column, and is probably a transient feature (the eruption plume is starting to punch through). The structure also indicates that little to no shearing winds were present at the time to disrupt the plume. By contrast, a cloud of denser, gray ash — most probably a pyroclastic flow — appears to be hugging the ground, descending from the volcano summit. The rising eruption plume casts a shadow to the northwest of the island (bottom center). Brown ash at a lower altitude of the atmosphere spreads out above the ground at upper right. Low-level stratus clouds approach Matua Island from the east, wrapping around the lower slopes of the volcano. Only about 1.5 kilometers of the coastline of Matua Island (upper center) can be seen beneath the clouds and ash.

STS068-218-007 (30 September-11 October 1994) — (Kliuchevskoi Volcano) The crewmembers used a 70mm camera to photograph this northeasterly looking view of the plume from the Kamchatka peninsula’s newly erupted volcano. The eruption was photographed from 115 nautical miles above Earth. Six NASA astronauts spent a week and a half aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour in support of the Space Radar Laboratory 2 (SRL-2) mission.

3. Pavlof Volcano, Alaska

Alaska Pavlof Volcano from space aerial nasa

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) photographed these striking views of Pavlof Volcano on May 18, 2013. The oblique perspective from the ISS reveals the three dimensional structure of the ash plume, which is often obscured by the top-down view of most remote sensing satellites.

Situated in the Aleutian Arc about 625 miles (1,000 kilometers) southwest of Anchorage, Pavlof began erupting on May 13, 2013. The volcano jetted lava into the air and spewed an ash cloud 20,000 feet (6,000 meters) high. When photograph ISS036-E-2105 (top) was taken, the space station was about 475 miles south-southeast of the volcano (49.1° North latitude, 157.4° West longitude). The volcanic plume extended southeastward over the North Pacific Ocean.

4. Manam Volcano, Papua New Guinea

Manam Volcano, Papua New Guinea from space aerial nasa

Photograph by NASA/Jesse Allen

Papua New Guinea’s Manam Volcano released a thin, faint plume on June 16, 2010, as clouds clustered at the volcano’s summit. The Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on NASA’s Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite took this picture the same day. Rivulets of brown rock interrupt the carpet of green vegetation on the volcano’s slopes. Opaque white clouds partially obscure the satellite’s view of Manam. The clouds may result from water vapor from the volcano, but may also have formed independent of volcanic activity. The volcanic plume appears as a thin, blue-gray veil extending toward the northwest over the Bismarck Sea.

Located 13 kilometers (8 miles) off the coast of mainland Papua New Guinea, Manam forms an island 10 kilometers (6 miles) wide. It is a stratovolcano. The volcano has two summit craters, and although both are active, most historical eruptions have arisen from the southern crater.

5. Puyehue-Cordón Caulle Volcano, Chile

Puyehue-Cordon Caulle Volcano chile from space aerial nasa

After awakening on June 4, 2011, the eruption at the Puyehue-Cordón Caulle Volcanic Complex continued through at least June 6th. Located in Chile, just west of the border with Argentina, Puyehue-Cordón Caulle emitted a plume of light-colored ash that stretched along the edge of the Andes. Hours earlier the prevailing winds had shifted, forming the prominent kink visible in the plume.

This natural-color satellite image was acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard Terra on the morning of June 6, 2011. At the time the Buenos Aires Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) reported that the ash plume reached an altitude of 40,000 feet (12,000 meters).

7. Nyiragongo Volcano, DR Congo

Two East African volcanoes, Nyamuragira and Nyiragongo, account for 40 percent of all recorded eruptions in Africa. The two volcanoes sit along the edge of the Western Rift, part of a giant crack in the Earth’s crust that runs for thousands of miles from the Middle East southward to central Africa. In addition to their shared tendency to produce unusually fast-moving lava flows, the two volcanoes have an even rarer trait in common. The crater of each has periodically contained a lava lake, a huge volume of molten lava pooling in a high-walled summit crater. The lava lakes can drain during eruptions, either spilling over the rim of the crater or bursting from a fissure or vent on the flank.

This high-resolution images from the commercial Ikonos satellite shows the craters Nyiragongo. According to the Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program, the most recent lava lake in the Nyamuragira crater drained during an eruption in 1938; the remnants of that activity are the lighter-purple lavas, mostly in the southwestern part of the crater.

The lava lake in Nyiragongo has drained and refilled several times during eruptions in the past few decades. Evidence of its simmering presence is provided by the plume of smoke and/or steam that billows from crater. In 2002, Nyiragongo’s lava lake drained during a flank eruption on the southern slopes. That lava flow raced into the city of Goma, killing several dozen people.

8. Shinmoe-dake Volcano, Japan

Ash has been the primary hazard from Shinmoe-dake Volcano since it began erupting on January 26, 2011. This natural-color satellite image shows an ash plume stretching eastwards from the volcano, and looping around the city of Miyazaki. The ash has caused flight cancellations, halted trains, and closed schools in the region. The image was acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer aboard the Terra satellite on February 4, 2011.

9. Merapi Volcano, Indonesia

At 2,911 meters, the summit of Merapi Volcano and its vigorous steam plume rises above a bank of stratus clouds on its southern flank on August 24, 2003. One of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, it has been almost continuously active for nearly ten years, including periodic pyroclastic flows (hot ash and rock debris) and avalanches. The volcano is located less than 25 miles north of the city of Yogykarta in central Java. More than 50,000 people live adjacent the treacherous southwestern slope, where volcanic material often sloughs from the unstable summit. Note the deep ravines on the eastern slopes providing rich soils and moisture to the agriculture below.

11. Mt. Etna, Italy

When this southward-looking photograph was taken by the Expedition 2 crew aboard the International Space Station, the city of Catania (in shadow, ~25 km SSE of the volcano) was covered by a layer of ash and Fontanarossa International Airport was closed. On that day an ash cloud was reported to have reached a maximum height of ~5.2 km. Plumes from two sources are visible here–a dense, darker mass from one of the three summit craters and a lighter, lower one. The record of historical volcanism of Mt. Etna is one of the longest in the world, dating back to 1500 BC. Two styles of activity are typical: explosive eruptions, sometimes with minor lava flows, from the summit craters and flank eruptions from fissures.

12. Eyjafjallajokull Volcano, Iceland

Eyjafjallajokull Volcano Iceland from space aerial nasa

NASA’s Terra satellite flew over the Eyjafjallajokull Volcano, Iceland, on May 6 at 11:55 UTC (7:55 a.m. EDT). The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer instrument known as MODIS that flies onboard Terra, captured a visible image of the ash plume. The plume was blowing east then southeast over the Northern Atlantic. The satellite image shows that the plume is at a lower level in the atmosphere than the clouds that lie to its east, as the brown plume appears to slide underneath the white clouds.

13. Chaiten Volcano, Chile

Photograph by NASA

After more than 9,000 years of silence, Chaiten Volcano in southern Chile erupted on May 2, 2008. The plume of ash and steam rose 10.7 to 16.8 kilometers (35,000 to 55,000 feet) into the atmosphere, reported the Smithsonian’s Global Volcanism Program. According to news reports issued by the AFP news service, ash blanketed the town of Chaiten, 10 kilometers away, forcing the town’s 4,000 people to evacuate by boat.

On May 3, ash and steam continued to billow from the volcano. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this photo-like image of a long, cloud-like plume flowing southeast from the volcano’s summit on May 3 at 10:35 a.m. local time (14:35 UTC). The plume rises high over the Andes Mountains, drifts across Argentina, and dissipates over the Atlantic Ocean. Ash closed schools, roads, and an airport in Argentina, hundreds of kilometers away from the volcano, said AFP.

14. Kliuchevskoi Volcano, Russia

STS068-214-035 (30 September 1994) — One of the first photos taken by the crewmembers on launch day of the Space Shuttle Endeavour was this 70mm frame of the Kliuchevskoi volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia. The volcano was near its peak at this time. The large, black eruption plume billows from the summit, as ash is being deposited on the snow-covered region to the east and southeast (north is to upper left). A small steam plume rises from the peak of Bezymianny just south of Kliuchevskoi (or just right of center). As various members of the six-person crew were using handheld cameras to record the eruption, hardware in Endeavour’s cargo bay was taking radar data of the event in support of the Space Radar Laboratory (SRL-2) project.

Car Covered in Chalkboard Paint Invites People to Draw On It

by Pinar

Chalkboard paint is often used to turn a wall in an office or school into a chalkboard, but college student Philip Romano decided to cover his 2004 Hyundai Elantra in the black matte material to transform his vehicle into an art project on wheels. Equipping the car with a vanity plate that reads "DRAWONME," Romano makes sure to further entice passersby with plenty of chalk, inviting them to draw on the mobile blackboard, whenever he parks his car.

He has found great success in getting people to cover the car, from top to bottom, in colorful drawings and text (some saying "Thanks for this"). The 20-year-old has left his car in various neighborhoods throughout New York, but gained great recognition once he parked it out in from of MoMA, where the line to draw on it reportedly went around the block. Since then, Romano's own mother has taken photos of people participating in the ongoing project and uploaded them to Imgur.

If you like this story, check out the man who invited people to Sharpie his van.

VANCOUVER FROM ABOVE

vancouver aerial from above Picture of the Day: Vancouver From Above

In this breathtaking aerial photograph by Evan Leeson, we see the beautiful city of Vancouver, Canada as viewed from a helicopter going from Victoria to Vancouver.

Vancouver is a coastal seaport city on the mainland of British Columbia, Canada. The metropolitan area, with more than 2.3 million residents, is the third most populous metropolitan area in the country and the most populous in Western Canada. With 5,249 people per square kilometre (13,590 per square mile), the City of Vancouver is the most densely populated Canadian municipality among those with 5,000 residents or more.

Vancouver is one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities in Canada; 52% of its residents do not speak English as their first language. For more than a decade, business magazine assessments have ranked Vancouver as one of the most liveable cities worldwide, and the Economist Intelligence Unit acknowledged it as the first city to rank among the top-ten of the world’s most livable cities for five consecutive years. [Source]

Overlooking Vancouver are the North Shore Mountains. Their southernmost peaks are visible from most areas in Vancouver and form a distinctive backdrop for the city.

Hilarious Look at the Everyday Life of Wookiees

by Pinar
Kurts90

@andrewrose - new headgear for our next walk through nyc?

Portland, Oregon-based photographer Mako Miyamoto (aka neon werewolf) playfully explores the everyday lives of Wookiees. The funny images feature the giant, hairy beasts as they kick back, relax, and have some fun. Each episode in his growing collection presents a different adventure, from the mundane and ordinary to the less mundane but still pretty standard activities.

Unlike Chewbacca, the woolly sidekick in the Star Wars franchise, these Wookiees aren't in the business of fighting Stormtroopers. With the exception of the few menacing crooks looking to rob a diner, these furry fellas are just looking to have a good time at the roller rink, celebrate a birthday with cake, have a rejuvenating yoga session, sit down for a delicious meal outdoors, re-enact their favorite karate moves on the beach, and even get in on the Hadoukening photo meme.

Modern Electric Scooter Revolutionizes Urban Mobility

by Jacob Paul Wiegmann
Kurts90

I'll take one please...

With urban environments becoming more and more congested, there has been an increase in more eco-friendly and space saving alternatives. German-based company Scrooser hopes to revolutionize the way we travel around our cities with their now successfully funded Kickstarter project. The Scrooser is an electric scooter that is similar to a push scooter rather than a motored one. This is because it uses an amazingly engineered impulse drive that quadruples the power of your kicks to a top speed of 15mph. The power source is a standard lithium ion battery found beneath the floorboards. It takes three hours to fully charge and can go for up to 35 miles in distance.

A noticeable detail of this design are the fat wheels which adds to its manageable but cumbersome 60 pound weight. The smooth ride has been compared to the feeling of snowboarding. Other features of this unique mode of transportation are its full aluminum frame, LED running lights, ignition lock, and a cable lock built into the frame so you won't have to worry about anyone stealing your new ride. For just shy of $5,300, you can own your own Scrooser by donating to their Kickstarter campaign, which has already destroyed their set production goal of $120,000. Check out their promotional video below to learn more.

Surreal Photos That Make You Look Twice

by twistedsifter

Erik Johansson is a full-time photographer and retoucher from Sweden, now based in Berlin, Germany. The wildly successful artist does both personal and commission work for big brands around the world. His latest commercial project with Adobe had Erik doing live photoshopping at a modified bus stop. The campaign went viral, with over 15.5 million views to date on YouTube.

Erik has also done a TED talk in London, and it’s clear that the sky’s the limit for this incredibly talented young artist (born in ’85). Johansson states:

“I don’t capture moments, I capture ideas. To me photography is just a way to collect material to realize the ideas in my mind. I get inspired by things around me in my daily life and all kinds of things I see. Although one photo can consist hundreds of layers I always want it to look like it could have been captured. Every new project is a new challenge and my goal is to realize them as realistic as possible.”

Below you will find a small sample of Erik’s artwork. For the latest, be sure to check him out at the many links below. If you like what you see, prints are also available for purchase at Fine Art Pub.

Introducing the Hybrid-Electric Flying Car of the Future

by Katie Hosmer
Kurts90

when can I pre-order...

If you ever watched the Jetson's and longed to drive one of those flying cars, you will be super excited to see that the future is upon us. Massachusetts-based startup Terrafugia recently revealed plans for the TF-X, a hybrid-electric flying car that will just blow your mind. The company states, "We need the safety of commercial aviation, the convenience and flexibility of a car, and the freedom of the open sky. We need a practical flying car." And so, they have put that idea into action.

Plans for the four-passenger vehicle include collapsible, electrically-powered rotors that will allow for vertical take-off and landing, fold-up wings so that the car can also be driven on public roads, and a gas turbine that will power a rear propeller for longer-range flights. On the ground, the TF-X will run on electric motors powered by battery packs or, in hybrid mode, by energy generated from a turbine. The car will be able to travel 500 miles at up to 200 miles per hour and will be equipped with a parachute for any emergency landing needs.

One five-hour session will provide driver's with the necessary pilot's license to operate the vehicle, but, if all goes as planned, the machine should be able to fly entirely by itself, navigating everything from take-off to landing. The plans are still quite new and won't actually be produced for at least 8-10 more years. However, when they are ready to hit the skies, interested passengers will be able to purchase one of these futuristic machines for an average of $279,000.

Tiny Human Sculptures with Immensly Exaggerated Features

by Katie Hosmer

Born in Argentina, visual artist Gerardo Feldstein builds sculptures featuring wacky human figures with disproportionately large hands or feet. Made out of wire and wood, the pieces portray strangely intriguing moments when perspective is distorted.

Through his work, Feldstein challenges his viewers to make sense of what we see. The tiny headed figures with exaggerated features do all kinds of everyday things like point, climb ropes, and reach for things. It's a wonder how these bizarre little guys maintain any sort of balance. Feldstein says, “I see the sculpture as an extension of myself, my characters do, dramatize things I want and I can do."

Bonsai Versions of the World’s Tallest Tree

by twistedsifter
Kurts90

I want one of these!

Bonsai is a Japanese art form using miniature trees grown in containers. Similar practices exist in other cultures, including the Chinese tradition of penjing from which the art originated. The Japanese tradition dates back over a thousand years, and has its own aesthetics and terminology.

The purposes of bonsai are primarily contemplation (for the viewer) and the pleasant exercise of effort and ingenuity (for the grower). A bonsai is created beginning with a specimen of source material. This may be a cutting, seedling, or small tree of a species suitable for bonsai development.

While there are many popular species for Bonsai, I am fascinated by the use of Coast Redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens), as they are the tallest trees currently on Earth.

Common names include coast redwood, California redwood, and giant redwood. They are evergreens and can live 1200–1800 years or more, reaching up to 379 feet (115.5 m) in height (without the roots) and up to 26 feet (7.9 m) in diameter at breast height. An estimated 95% or more of the original old-growth redwood forest has been cut down due to its excellent properties for use as lumber in construction. [Source]

Hyperion is the name of a coast redwood in Northern California that was measured at 115.61 metres (379.3 ft), which ranks it as the world’s tallest known living tree. It was discovered August 25, 2006 by naturalists Chris Atkins and Michael Taylor. [Source]

Below you will find a small gallery of beautiful Bonsai Redwoods. There are many more examples online, but a great place to start is at the Redwood Empire Bonsai Society where they feature an extensive collection from countless Bonsai exhibits in the U.S.

Playful Diversions on the Streets of France by OakOak

by twistedsifter
Kurts90

great creativity!

OakOak is a street artist from Saint-Étienne, France, whose playful diversions bring smiles to those who come across his work. The Outsiders Gallery sums up his style nicely:

Pen-pusher by day, street art superhero by night, Saint-Étienne sensation OakOak’s hilarious, imaginative, irreverent and sometimes a little macabre street work has filled column inches from BBC Brazil to Beijing’s biggest daily newspaper… Daubing simple graffiti and paintings on urban features – often the broken ones – OakOak does what street art does best, amuse and inspire people of all ages and demographics by appropriating the city’s less appealing elements.

OakOak is a street artist, but he is not a fine artist painting in public. His work, either on the streets of his native St Etienne, France, or made on his travels, is opportunistic and never “authorised”. He is completely untrained in art and works full-time in an office. Whilst his favourite artist is Amedeo Modigliani, he cites his main influences as football, comic books, video games and his home town. “I like this city, her atmosphere” OakOak says of Saint-Étienne “and I wanted it to look nicer. It was an industrial city with many coal mines; now it’s in regeneration and still quite poor. But it’s easily travelled by foot with awkward aspects ideal for art. I saw shapes everywhere, and wanted to realise them.”

Amazing Two-Story Bike Strolls Through Los Angeles

by Pinar
Kurts90

how the hell does he get up there...

More than just your average bicycle, Richie Trimble's self-built STOOPID TALL bike stands at 14.5 feet tall, making the rider's seat nearly two stories above the ground. It's no wonder why the bike turned heads last week as Trimble rode the towering two-wheeler through the streets of Los Angeles for CicLAvia VI: CicLAvia To the Sea. Accompanied by his fellow Los Angeleno cyclists, the professional cinematographer stood out in the crowd, even among other tall bikes.

With a GoPro camera strapped to his chest, the adventurous rider documented his vertigo-inducing ride on the custom made bike. Managing to keep his balance at the top, after climbing its criss-crossing beams, Trimble was actually aided by fellow cyclists as they rode ahead and made a pathway for him to ride through traffic. Other photographers in the flock of bikers also snapped their lenses to capture the amazing spectacle making its way from La Cienaga to Venice beach. Trimble was actually able to make a 20-mile ride before the chain on the Big Boy bike gave out and he had to grapple onto a telephone pole and drop to the ground.

A first-person point of view of the unconventional yet exciting ride can be observed in Trimble's captured footage, which can be seen in the video, below.

Super Mario Bros. Hilariously Re-Imagined as Hipsters

by Pinar
Kurts90

hahaha... silly hipsters

Illustrator Sam Milham, aka idrawcartoons, transforms four beloved characters from the Mario Bros. video game franchise into a gang of irony-loving hipsters. The 22-year-old's renderings of Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Bowser are spot-on re-imaginings of the cast. Milham humorously captures a side of them that includes everything from suspenders, scarves, and smokes to mustaches, thick-rimmed glasses, and an SLR (presumably non-digital).

The artist is currently taking requests for more characters to re-invent through his Tumblr. Hopefully, Hipster Princess Peach won't be too far behind this set. Perhaps she'll even have her own typewriter and ironically eat an organic peach.

Injecting Paint in Bubble Wrap to Create Pixelated Portraits

by alice
Kurts90

most impressive is that he can suppress the urge to pop the bubble wrap...

In all our years of running My Modern Met, we've seen our share of amazing pixelated portraits. Humans (and even animals) have been made out of everything from crayons and computer keys to lipsticks and cake sprinkles. Artist Bradley Hart uses a different approach. His material of choice is one we don't often come across unless we open up a box or unwrap a delicate present. Bradley Hart works with bubble wrap.

Using ordinary syringes, Hart injects each individual bubble with acrylic paint. The process is not only time consuming, it's incredibly complex. While his finished pieces are unbelievably impressive, one can't truly appreciate his works unless one can visualize the process. Below, see behind-the-scenes pictures that show his boxes of syringes, his make-shift artist palette, or one of his paintings in progress.

From now till March 29, you can see some of Hart's works up close at gallery nine5 in New York. Called What? Where? When? Why? How?, it's Hart's first solo exhibition with the gallery.

"On the one hand, the bubble refers to dots or pixels, the building blocks of the technological world that surrounds us," states the gallery. "Pixels on computer screens store our memories with social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The process of injecting bubble wrap with paint in order to create one coherent picture, references pixilation as a combination of 1’s and 0’s that result in an image for us to consume. On the other hand, when a likeness of a loved one is injected into bubble wrap, the material’s inherent purpose is underscored – an image is being preserved as a memory in an object that is utilized for protection and safeguarding."

Animals Morphed Together to Create Hilarious New Species

by Pinar
Kurts90

the shark definitely looses its ferociousness with pugface

What if different species could mate? Redditor gyyp imagines just what that would look like and shares his Photoshopped creations for the world to look on in disbelief and wonder. The photo manipulator's Weird Animals collection pairs ducks with elephants, pugs with gorillas, guinea pigs with eagles, sharks with horses, killer whales with penguins, and the list goes on.

Gyyp's mastery in photo manipulation allows the mind to realistically visualize and process the monsters this digital Dr. Frankenstein has created. The head of one creature blends seamlessly into the other, regardless of actual size or whether they are land or sea dwelling animals. Some of the amalgamated beasts are frightening while others make you wish they actually existed (why isn't there a cuddly guinea pig lion?), but mostly they're just very, very weird.

Hilarious and Heartwarming Animals on 500px

by alice

dancing bear is awesome

In dreams I can fly

I thought we'd close out the week with something a little lighthearted. As many of you already know, 500px is a great website to not only share your latest photos, but to also get inspired. For us, it's a place to discover talented photographers. We've found some of our very favorite animal photographers from this site including ones we've shared with your right here at My Modern Met. Who could forget Japan-based Ben Torode and his adorably cute kitten, Daisy, or Russia-based Nikolai Zinoviev and his incredibly awesome photos of bears?

Today, we decided to bring together some of our very favorite animal photos from 500px. In continuing our series of the hilarious and the heartwarming (see snow dogs and dog portraits), we bring you these sweet storytelling shots. While some, like the one above, only come with simple captions, others are accompanied with a great backstory.

For What, no butter OR salt (immediately below), photographer Barb D'Arpino writes on her 500px page, "We had fastened a cob of corn on a snag for the birds to enjoy. We sat down to dinner and out of the corner of my eye I noticed movement on the corn. Imagine my surprise when I saw Eleanor stuffing her cheeks with kernels until she looked ready to explode. It didn't take her long to strip the cob. Grabbed my camera, snapped a few pictures and the rest is history :+)"
