Xbox One meets PS4? Microsoft to enable cross-platform multiplayer gaming with other consoles

by James Risley

well this is interesting....

If you’re big into multiplayer gaming, you need to buy the same console as your friends to play together. But a new move by Microsoft may end that.

In a note to independent developers today, ID@Xbox director Chris Charla announced that the company is enabling developers to support cross-network multiplayer gaming. He explains, “This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks – including other console and PC networks.”

Xbox & Playstation

In other words, it could the first step in letting Xbox One users play against PlayStation 4 owners online, if Sony decides to open up its network, as well. We’re asking the PlayStation maker for comment on Microsoft’s announcement.

“Of course, it’s up to game developers to support this feature, and Xbox Live players will always have the option of choosing to play only with other Xbox Live players,” Charla said.

Rocket League, the smash hit where you play soccer with a futuristic car, will be one of the first games to enable cross platform play. The initial rollout will just be between PC and Xbox One networks, but Microsoft is inviting other networks (like Playstation Network) to open up as well.

While one of the main selling points of the new Xbox app on Windows 10 has been letting users play with friends on more devices, this doubles down on that approach and puts Microsoft’s console ahead of the PS4 in that respect.

And for Microsoft, which is frequently behind Sony in console sales, this could pump up Xbox One sales among users whose friends all own PS4s. However, Sony will still have to adopt similar measures with Playstation Network for cross-platform multiplayer to really take off.

Bill Gates has long been focused on finding better ways to manage sanitation processes — and build better toilets — for developing nations. A big part of that has included finding ways to conserve water. Now Gates reveals another landmark step in the direction of turning waste into everyday resources. The OmniProcessor, designed and built by Janicki Bioenergy, an engineering firm north of Seattle, takes human waste and turns it into clean drinking water, electricity and clean ash. Gates opens the video by explaining that nearly 2.5 billion of the world’s population doesn’t have access to safe sanitation — a huge … Read More on GeekWire

Winnie The Pooh Face Masks Are Giving People Nightmares

Nightmare.....

(Image Link)

Winnie the Pooh is one of those cute and cuddly characters that should make you feel all warm and fuzzy every time you see him, no matter the incarnation or re-imagining.

But a new line of officially licensed Winnie the Pooh 'relaxation masks' are making people pooh their pants in terror, since they look like something a serial killer would wear while they slay.

(Image Link)

Both the Winnie and Eeyore masks make the wearer feel like they're having a waking heffalump and woozle dream, but they're face isn't melting- it's just the look of a licensed product gone horribly wrong!

(Image Link)

Posting pictures of yourself wearing the frightful mask of Pooh has become a Twitter trend in Japan, where people don't mind putting a little Pooh on their face for the sake of social media comedy.

Asian Cobra Tower Architectural Project

Maybe in Dubai?

App for splitting the bill based on race and gender gives ‘check your privilege’ a whole new meaning

Does your bleeding liberal heart make you feel guilty about your privilege? Do you love receiving praise on social media for good deeds? Do you wish there was something you could do to make up for five centuries of oppression?

The Equipay team presents their app at Comedy Hack Day SF. (Screenshot via YouTube).
The EquiTable team presents their app at Comedy Hack Day SF. (Screenshot via YouTube).

There’s an app for that.

EquiTable (formerly EquiPay) splits the check fairly — and by fairly they mean in accordance with 500 years of racial and gender discrimination.

When it’s time to divide up the check, the app sets the amount owed for each member of the group, based on how much their income is affected by their privilege.

Users can protest the amounts based on inputs like “I’m conventionally unattractive” or “I’m a middle child,” but they aren’t likely to get very far. Selecting “This isn’t an issue anymore” prompts the app to lay down some truth about income inequality and ends with “I suggest you read a Jezebel article or two.”

The EquiTable team took home first prize for the concept at Comedy Hack Day SF last month. Watch their hilarious pitch below.

High-tech kicks: Nike unveils self-lacing shoes, will go on sale later this year

by Taylor Soper

I need this now. Starting to get harder to bend over and tie shoelaces.

Photos via Nike.
Photos via Nike.

Hate tying your shoelaces? Nike has you covered.

The shoe giant today unveiled the Nike Hyperadapt 1.0, its first self-lacing sneaker that is available to the general public.

“Innovation at Nike is not about dreaming of tomorrow. It’s about accelerating toward it,” longtime Nike designer Tinker Hatfield said. “We’re able to anticipate the needs of athletes because we know them better than anybody. Sometimes, we deliver a reality before others have even begun to imagine it.”

The shoe features sensors in the heel that detect your foot, signaling the shoe to tighten. Two buttons on each side allow you to tighten and loosen the fit as needed.

Here’s soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo trying the shoes on:

Nike’s new “adaptive technology” first debuted this past October, when it showed off the 2015 Nike Air Mag that had the self-lacing feature. Those kicks were only available in limited quantity via auction, with proceeds going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

The Hyperadapt, though, will go on sale to members on the Nike+ platform this holiday season in three colors.

20160315_FY16_INNO_SNOWCAP_SILVER_HERO_0029_hd_1600

FY16_INNO_SNOWCAP_WHITE_HERO_V2_0043_hd_1600

The longer-term vision is to have a shoe that automatically tightens or loosens, depending on what activity a person may be doing.

“Wouldn’t it be great if a shoe, in the future, could sense when you needed to have it tighter or looser? Could it take you even tighter than you’d normally go if it senses you really need extra snugness in a quick maneuver?” Hatfield said. “That’s where we’re headed. In the future, product will come alive.”

Other companies big and small are testing their own self-lacing technologies, but Nike certainly has the resources and customer base to push these new products into the mainstream.

Nike has always prided itself on innovation and that was evident when Nike COO Eric Sprunk joined us on stage at the GeekWire Summit this past September. Sprunk explained how it’s possible that customers will be able to download a file for a shoe and manufacture their new kicks at home with a 3D printer.

“Do I envision a future where we might still own the file from an IP perspective — you can’t just have anyone making a Nike product — and have it manufactured in your own home or we do it for you at our store?” Sprunk said. “Yeah, that’s not that far away.”

haha these are awesome

Photoshop is a powerful tool, and learning to use the software can make you feel mighty powerful when you start doing stuff like seamlessly swapping heads or cutting and pasting people in and out of pics with impunity.

Because of this feeling of power many Photoshoppers wind up using their skills for evil, trolling and sometimes even ruining lives by manipulating images for the Dark Side.

But 18th Level Photoshop Wizard James Fridman is different- he's using his trolling powers for good...and because people keep asking him to mess with their pics.

James' Photoshop skills are in such high demand that people keep sending him pics to digitally alter despite the fact that his trollish sense of humor often leaves the subjects looking a little silly.

Elegant New Modern Lighting Designs From Cerno

by Promila Shastri
Ivy Esquero

Really like these! And also - we're done apartment shopping finally! Lighting and furniture finally done!

Cerno Calx Pendant Light

The Calx Pendant Light is distinct for its geometric, faceted shade.

Southern California design studio, Cerno, has just released a new suite of contemporary lamps, each design bearing the characteristic restraint and elegance for which the brand has become well known. Premier amongst them is the Calx LED Pendant Light, a clean, geometric modern lighting fixture comprised of faceted surfaces, and available in three sizes, the largest of which is a sumptuously-sized 36 inches across.  The contemporary pendant lamp’s metal composition—finished in brushed aluminum, brass, or rose gold—has been given a Mid-Century-invoking wood grain finish of natural or dark walnut.  An energy efficient LED light source—another Cerno trademark—emanates from Calx’s gleaming interior, casting downward nuanced illumination, tailor-made for the contemporary dining room.

Camur Pendant Light by Cerno

The Camur Pendant Light by Cerno is amongst the California design group’s latest modern lighting offerings.

Cerno’s new Camur LED Linear Pendant Lamp has the kind of graceful brilliance sure to appeal to minimalists whose idea of statement lighting is a dearth of embellishment. Camur’s gently snaking horizontal form, an impressive 5 feat in length, is comprised of beautifully grained walnut, and a translucent polymer panel that disperses diffused illumination across a wide swathe. Exactingly composed, Camur’s softly curving walnut side panels are replicated identically in the polymer panel from which illumination emanates, yielding the same shape whether seen from below or viewed face-on. An exceedingly architectural modern lighting statement, the Camur pendant lamp proves ideal for both domestic and commercial interiors.

Amazon debuts first ad-supported show, available for non-Prime viewers

by James Risley
Ivy Esquero

I love this show! Too bad the ads are terrible - why can't they just get regular TV ads instead of terrible digital ads that play over and over. TERRIBLE!

amazon fashion fundAmazon has shown it can go up against Netflix and HBO by offering original content to paid subscribers, but now it’s chasing Hulu and broadcast networks with its first ad-supported original show.

The third season of The Fashion Fund debuted on Amazon yesterday, and anyone can watch it as long as they don’t mind putting up with a few ads. The 10-episode reality show pits fashion design contestants against each other for a $400,000 prize. Of course, you can buy some of the fashion seen on the screen straight from the show’s streaming page.

By offering content without the need for a Prime membership, Amazon is appealing to viewers who don’t want to pay the $99 subscription fee. While advertising will help Amazon make up some of that revenue (Philips Norelco and Philips Sonicare ran ads during the season’s first episode), the product placement of contestant’s clothing brands, only available on Amazon, will also help drive buyers to the company’s online marketplace (and maybe even pay more for free shipping).

It’s unclear if Amazon will continue to debut ad-supported shows to its lineup. New seasons of premium shows like Transparent or Mozart in the Jungle likely won’t have ad breaks anytime soon, but Amazon may work on shows with more product placement options and ad breaks in the future. It could even bring ads to older seasons of its premium shows to get people hooked, opening up the possibility of converting those viewers to Prime users down the line.

The Fashion Fund is available now. All versions include ads, even for Prime users. But non-Prime users can view the show in the browser or any Amazon TV or smartphone streaming app. And just like broadcast TV, you’ll have to wait a week for each new episode.

Man taking selfies with his girlfriend and a gun dies after accidentally shooting himself in the face

by Kurt Schlosser
Ivy Esquero

The selfie isn't the problem - it's the gun.

A Washington man taking selfies with his girlfriend and a gun shot himself in the face and died on Sunday, according to a news report.

The Skagit Valley Herald says the 43-year-old Concrete, Wash., man and his girlfriend were in a house in the 46000 block of Baker Loop Road taking photos of themselves when the incident occurred. The man’s name was not released.

Chad Clark, chief of patrol with the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office, said the man and woman had reportedly loaded and unloaded the weapon several times during the day, taking pictures throughout.

Clark said a bullet apparently remained in the gun the last time the man handled it and the incident is being investigated as an accident.

Earlier this month, CNN reported on a study looking into deaths related to people taking selfies. The study by Priceonomics found that “the selfie seems to serve as an inopportune catalyst — a distractor in situations where the picture-taker should should be focused on safety.”

Uber introduces family plan that lets users add up to 10 people per account

by Madeline Vuong
Ivy Esquero

good for parents and grandparent - not so much for kids

uber-app11

Uber, the on-demand ride-hailing service, today announced a new group feature called Family Profiles, allowing up to 10 people can sign into the same account, which is covered by a single payment method.

Currently, the feature is available in Atlanta, Dallas, and Phoenix, but Uber eventually hopes to expand the service nationally and internationally, the company said in a statement.

It’s the latest move by the popular ride-hailing app to expand its appeal in the face of competition from Lyft and other startups, as well as traditional taxis.

Every person on a Family Profile must first have an individual Uber account to join. Since Uber doesn’t serve minors, that means that all the users on Family Profiles must be over 18. In other words, parents can pay for their college-age kids to get rides around campus, but they can’t pay for their middle school children to take Uber to a dance.

The feature works like this: An Uber user selects up to 10 contacts to receive an invitation to join the Family Profile. Then, when any of those people want to order a ride, they can select the Family Profile as their default payment method. The original organizer gets receipts for all rides billed to the Family Profile. Though everyone on the group plan can use one payment method, only the original organizer can see specific payment details like credit card number.

And there’s good news for college students who don’t want mom and dad always knowing where they’re Ubering: as members of a Family Profile, users can still add their own payment methods for personal trips. Those trips won’t be billed to the main family card, and receipts for their trips will be sent to their personal accounts.

Uber’s new family plan builds upon its existing group payment plan, Uber For Business, designed for employees who want to expense their trips.

Google wins patent for ‘bus detection,’ less than a month after its self-driving car hit a bus

by Monica Nickelsburg

ha - kinda funny

Oh, the irony. Just a few weeks after Google’s self-driving car hit a bus in its hometown, the search giant received a patent titled “Bus Detection for an Autonomous Vehicle.”

To be fair, the patent mainly pertains to school buses, which the cars can detect based on word and color cues. In February, Google’s self-driving car hit an ordinary city bus, when both the driver and the car wrongly assumed they would be allowed to merge. No one was hurt in the collision.

The patent, originally reported by CNet, includes the ability to detect school buses based on relative size, as well as other cues. Google originally applied for the patent in 2014, so the timing is just a funny coincidence.

Minecraft will be the backbone for a new platform designed to help test and improve artificial intelligence applications, Microsoft announced on Monday.

The new platform, called AIX, will be made available to researchers who are trying to help AI think with the same sophistication and complexity as humans, Microsoft explained in a post. In one example, a research team is using Minecraft to train an AI “agent” how to climb to the highest point in the virtual world, using the same types of resources as a human would when doing the same thing.

Microsoft MinecraftMinecraft is an attractive environment for AI testing and can become a research “playpen” because it presents endless possibilities, “ranging from simple tasks like walking around looking for treasure to complex ones like building a structure with a group of teammates,” the company said in the post, adding that the game is also a lot cheaper than building robots to try to navigate physical obstacle courses.

“The things that seem really easy for us are actually the things that are really difficult for an artificial intelligence,” said Robert Schapire, a principal researcher at Microsoft Research who is part of the team using AIX in Microsoft’s New York lab, in the Microsoft post.

Microsoft researchers and a small group of academics have been part of a private test period but the company will make the platform widely available via an open-source license sometime this summer.

Microsoft’s new platform comes as Google DeepMind’s AlphaGo AI program recently has generated a lot of media attention. In a contest of the ancient Chinese game of Go, Google’s program defeated champion Lee Sedol in three consecutive games, winning the $1 million five-game match. On Sunday, Sedol struck back with a consolation win.

Since buying Mojang, the company that developed Minecraft, in 2014, Microsoft has found multiple uses for the game. It became the bedrock of Microsoft’s educational strategy after the software giant also acquired MinecraftEdu, a version of the game created for the classroom.

The Life of Philip K. Dick

by Donnia
Ivy Esquero

So I need to really read his novels - i love most of his movies and currently loving The Man in the High Castle on Amazon. Anyone read his books?

New Zillow tool helps determine ideal window to sell your house faster and for more money

by Kurt Schlosser
Ivy Esquero

Seems really useful for home sales

Seattle house
When spring has sprung in Seattle, and much of the country, Zillow says the timing is right for houses to sell faster and for more money. (Kurt Schlosser / GeekWire)

Determining the right time of year to sell your home is a tricky prospect for would-be sellers, and getting it right could influence the final sale price significantly, according to Zillow. Now the Seattle real estate media company is providing a new tool, called Best Time to List, and revealing the ideal timeframe for the country’s 25 biggest metro areas.

According to Zillow, local market variations and weather patterns can affect the buying season, but new analysis suggests homes sold in late spring (May 1-May 15), sell around 18.5 days faster and for 1 percent, or $1,700, more than the average listing.

San Francisco, with a median sold price of $1.15 million, boasts a $12,200 premium for sellers who get the window right (May 16-31). In Seattle, where weather is a factor throughout much of the year, houses moved 20 days faster than average if sold in the May 1-15 timeframe.

Low inventory is heavily influencing the market today, according to Dr. Svenja Gudell, Zillow’s chief economist.

“Faced with increasingly competitive markets, many buyers are forced to consider several homes and make multiple offers, elongating the home shopping experience,” Gudell said in a news release. “By listing homes further into the shopping season, sellers may attract buyers who are increasingly eager to purchase and may be more willing to pay a premium for the home.”

Best Time to List estimates how much more money a seller can make by changing the listing date on their individual home. According to Zillow Blog, the tool is live for 71 million off-market homes, and registered Zillow users can find it by clicking the “Sell Your Home” on the home details page for an individual home.

House hunting? Here’s how far your dollar goes in America’s top 5 tech hubs

by Monica Nickelsburg
Ivy Esquero

The pictures are more representative than the numbers...

Photos via Zillow.

If you live in a region with a thriving tech industry, you’ve probably noticed your dollar doesn’t go as far in the housing market as it used to.

svenja-828c5e
Svenja Gudell

There are a few factors causing rent and home values to rise, says Svenja Gudell, chief economist at Zillow, the Seattle-based real estate media company. Most notably, when tech companies do well they hire — and they tend to hire young people who look to buy or rent entry-level homes. This increases demand faster than inventory can be supplied.

“The tech sector’s been doing really well,” said Gudell. “We’ve seen a lot of job growth in tech and a lot of income growth in tech as well, so a lot of these cities have attracted new people…Inventory is pretty tight given how many people are looking for homes, especially first-time home buyers. If you think about a lot of the millennials that are active in tech, buying their first home, they’re having an especially hard time breaking into those markets and affordability is becoming a real issue.”

Gudell also noted that many people who lost their homes in the 2008 crash are still renting, and many who would like to buy a home in these regions can’t afford to do so.

“They’re staying renters,” she said. “You have millennials that would like to buy but they can’t because there are not a lot of homes for them to buy, so you just have a lot more renters now and there aren’t enough rental units out there. So, over the last two or so years, we’ve seen very rapid rental appreciation.”

Booming tech industries certainly affect the housing market, but some of these regions are seeing faster appreciation than others. GeekWire used Zillow data from January 2016 to compare how far your dollar goes in the nation’s top tech hubs. Continue reading for the results.

Inventive Fairytale-Like Book Sculptures

by Hoel
Ivy Esquero

i love this, but also hate it because of the book destruction

Adorable Hand-Drawn Porcelain Dinnerware

by Katia
Ivy Esquero

I really like the traditional style meets silly/modern imagery.

Michael Bloomberg won’t run for president, as tech and Republican leaders discuss stopping Trump

by Greg Sandoval
Ivy Esquero

These guys are Republicans? Among the tech notables who gathered on an island off the coast of Georgia last weekend for the American Enterprise Institute’s annual World Forum were Apple CEO Tim Cook, Google co-founder Larry Page, Napster cofounder and Facebook investor Sean Parker, and Tesla Motors chief Elon Musk.

For a while at least, it appeared the tech sector might have rallied around a Michael Bloomberg campaign. The former mayor of New York and billionaire tycoon who made his fortune in technology, said in January he would consider a run, and at least to some in the tech sector, Bloomberg seemed liked an attractive alternative to Republican frontrunner Donald Trump.

But Bloomberg announced Monday that he doesn’t think he could win and won’t enter the race. Where does that leave the tech sector? Well, some of the industry’s biggest players, were huddled last weekend with leaders of the Republican party to discuss ways to stop Trump, The Huffington Post has reported.

They were joined by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), political strategist Karl Rove, House Speaker Paul Ryan, and Sens. Tom Cotton (Ark.), Cory Gardner (Colo.), and Tim Scott (S.C.), the Post reported.

According to the Post, conservative columnist Bill Kristol wrote in an email from the conference: “A specter was haunting the World Forum–the specter of Donald Trump,” borrowing the opening lines of the Communist Manifesto. “There was much unhappiness about his emergence, a good deal of talk, some of it insightful and thoughtful, about why [Trump has] done so well, and many expressions of hope that he would be defeated.”

It certainly won’t be Bloomberg who defeats him.

In a piece posted to the web site of the news service he owns, Bloomberg said “When I look at the data, it’s clear to me that if I entered the race, I could not win.” Bloomberg added he believes he might win some states but he acknowledged that his candidacy might help Trump or Sen. Ted Cruz win the presidency. That is a scenario Bloomberg said he could not risk.

Bloomberg, who has an engineering degree, built his fortune, estimated to be worth $41 billion, on the Bloomberg Terminal, the computer system that provides real-time financial information to scores of bankers, stock traders and analysts. He used to say that as the CEO and founder of the company that bears his name, he operated New York’s most successful tech venture.

Crazy subject - but the shots are very cool

Cabins Series by Tristan Pereira

by Donnia
Ivy Esquero

@Andrew - you over cabins?

Snow White looks a little spaced or missing a few chromosomes

Welcoming and Ingenious Designer Cabin in Norway

by Hoel
Ivy Esquero

I really like that this just fits into the rocks - and it looks warm even though it's surrounded by stone.

Nate Silver says Trump’s rise violates academic theories and precedent ‘in so many ways’

by Taylor Soper

oh boy...even Silver is stumped....

BOSTON — As editor and founder of FiveThirtyEight, Nate Silver makes a living by predicting the outcomes of sporting events and political elections. But even his exhaustive statistical forecasting models could not accurately project how far Donald Trump would get in the Republican presidential nomination race.

Silver discussed Trump’s unprecedented rise at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, spending a half-hour on a non-sports-related topic that has dominated headlines over the past several months.

“There are a lot of complicated lessons on the rise of Trump,” he said. “A lot of things have to come together for something like this to happen, and they have.”

Silver said there were three arguments his team made for why Trump was unlikely to be the Republican Party nominee.

The first was that Trump was in a media bubble. Silver noted that there were moments in his campaign where Trump was getting 70 or 80 percent of network news coverage in a field of 17 candidates.

“There was some notion that when he got more coverage, the polls went up, and there was a positive feedback loop,” Silver said.

He said that argument is an important part of the story, but not sufficient enough to explain why exit polls show that Trump’s supporters have been behind the candidate for so long.

“The media bubble theory is somewhat wrong, but you can’t talk about Trump without talking about the role media played,” Silver added.

The second theory was that Trump was a “factional” candidate” who would win support in the way former candidates like Pat Buchanan, Mike Huckabee, and Ron Paul did in the past.

“I don’t mean to put them together, but they got 20, 30 percent of the vote,” Silver said. “That theory might actually be right — Trump has not won a majority in any of the states.”

The third theory revolved around the fact that Republicans, many who dislike Trump, would “stop him somehow.” But Silver noted that the party was too disorganized and dysfunctional early on in the race.

“You’re not supposed to have 17 candidates running,” he said. “There weren’t very many endorsements and people weren’t getting off the sidelines in the GOP until very late in the game.”

Silver said there are some historical examples similar to what’s going on with Trump, dating back elections during the 1960s, 1930s, or 1890s — “periods of social upheaval,” he noted.

But the Trump situation is certainly unique.

“It’s not that he just violates some academic theories — he violates precedent in so many ways,” Silver said.
