10 Actors Who Appeared In Music Videos Before They Were Famous

by Zeon Santos

Most of the music videos made in the 1980s and 1990s were made in Los Angeles, where actors and musicians freely mingle before and after their careers had taken off.

This Hollywood connection between pop music and visual media made music videos the perfect platform for launching an actor's career, and some of the most famous faces in Hollywood started out as unknown extras in music videos.

1. Christina Hendricks in Everclear's "One Hit Wonder"-

Christina Hendricks hit the big time when she played the fierce yet sultry Joan Holloway in Mad Men, and some even think playing Kelly Kramer on Beggars and Choosers really launched her career in television.

But nobody seems to remember her portrayal of "Loopy" in the video for Everclear's song One Hit Wonder, probably because she was overshadowed by game show host extraordinaire Wink Martindale.

(YouTube Link)

2. Angelina Jolie in Meat Loaf's "Rock 'N' Roll Dreams Come Through"-

Just because Angelina Jolie has a famous father who was already a Hollywood A-lister by the time she was in high school doesn't mean she got to skip straight to the top.

No, Ms. Jolie had to start at the bottom eating meatloaf like everybody else, err...I mean acting with Meatloaf in the music video for his song Rock 'N' Roll Dreams Come Through! The video came out in 1993, which is the same year she starred in Cyborg 2

(YouTube Link)

The video came out in 1993, which is the same year Angelina starred in Cyborg 2 and co-starred with Amy Smart in the video for The Lemonheads song It's About Time, blink and you'll miss her!

(YouTube Link)

3. Courteney Cox in Bruce Springsteen's "Dancing In The Dark"-

Before she was a sitcom star who was always there for you Courteney Cox was there for Bruce Springsteen to serve as his biggest fan in the "live concert" music video for Dancing In The Dark.

Courteney had the moves, she had the Springsteena look popular with female Springsteen fans in the 80s, and she had the sweet face people adored, so it's not surprising she became one of our best Friends in the 90s.

(YouTube Link)

4. Matt LeBlanc in Tom Petty and the Heartbreaker's "Into The Great Wide Open"-

Courteney's fellow friend Matt LeBlanc also appeared in a music video early on in his acting career, but his appearance was sadly overshadowed by the presence of the already famous actor Johnny Depp.

However, Matt's appearance in the 1991 music video for Tom Petty's Into The Great Wide Open was a notable part of the breakthrough year he became Vinnie Verducci, aka "L.A. Joey".

Aside from Depp and LeBlanc this epic video also stars Gabrielle Anwar, Faye Dunaway, Terence Trent D'Arby, Chyna Phillip and of course Tom Petty himself.

(YouTube Link)

5. Zooey Deschanel in Offspring's "She's Got Issues"-

Zooey Deschanel is now best known for her appearance in Elf, and for being the inspiration for the "manic pixie" look popular in the early 2000s, but ironically enough her second appearance on film was in The Offspring video She's Got Issues.

She was the new girl at nineteen years old yet she'd already mastered the wide-eyed "I'm cute but whaa....?" look we've come to expect from Zooey.

(YouTube Link)

6. Channing Tatum in Ricky Martin's "She Bangs"-

Channing Tatum's appearance in Magic Mike secured his position as a sexy symbol and Hollywood A-lister, but well before his magic mike made him famous he was shaking his thang as a male stripper in Ricky Martin's She Bangs.

(YouTube Link)

7. Liv Tyler and Alicia Silverstone  in Aerosmith's "Cryin'"-

(Image Link)

Liv Tyler's dad Steven Tyler may have inadvertently launched his daughter's acting career when he cast her in the music video for Aerosmith's Cryin', and it probably helped Alicia Silverstone's career along too.

And who's that roguishly handsome fellow who made his acting debut in Cryin' too? Why, it's Josh Holloway of LOST fame!

(Image Link)

Please enjoy this earworm from your younger days that's sure to bring back memories both good and bad. Are they tears of joy or tears of happiness? You decide.

(YouTube Link)

8. Adam Savage in Billy Joel's "You're Only Human"-

Before Adam Savage became a Hollywood practical effects mastermind and a Mythbuster he was an aspiring actor playing a nerdy drowning guy in the video for Billy Joel's You're Only Human. Once a nerd always a nerd!

(YouTube Link)

9. RuPaul in The B-52's "Love Shack"-

RuPaul is the unrivaled queen of drag culture, and these days his star power seems to be getting brighter and more fierce by the minute, but before he started organizing drag races he was hangin' at the Love Shack.

I know this song is a real earworm, but it's so worth it to see RuPaul doing his thang back in the day!

(YouTube Link)

10. Jenna Elfman in Depeche Mode's "Halo"-

Jenna Elfman is best known for starring in sitcoms like Dharma & Greg and Accidentally On Purpose, but before she was the wacky girl next door she was a totally a la mode- Depeche Mode, that is.

Here she is in the video for Depeche Mode's Halo, from the hit album Violator.

BONUS- Andy Warhol in The Cars' "Hello Again"-

Here's a totally radical video for The Cars song Hello Again, featuring a totally bizarro cameo by Andy Warhol!

The Style-on-a-Budget Guide to a Fall Wardrobe Update

by Marlen Komar
Ivy Esquero

Kinda glad I'm not around for this Fall. What the hell are these outfits?!

Thrift stores often get a bad rep, because when people think of charity shops, they envision moth-bitten sweaters and squeaky shopping cart wheels; '80s razzle dazzle beading and broken old toasters. And to be fair, yes, a lot of that goes down in secondhand stores. But there is a lot of gold tucked in between all those shoulder padded blazers and hand-knit sweater vests. And with fall upon us, hitting those one dollar racks is a great way to update your wardrobe on a tight budget. To prove it, I've found 15 pieces for $100 and created 12 outfits with them. Ahead is the breakdown, but before we jump into the fun stuff, let's go over the prep work necessary in order to come out heavy with bags. It's not all just blind luck!

Filipino Artist Turns Old Flip Flops Into Action Figures

by Zeon Santos
Ivy Esquero

Tsinelas!

There are quite a few steps involved in the making of action figure, including sculpting, molding, assembly and painting, which is why it's virtually impossible for one person to put out their own line of action figures.

But there's an artist in the Philippines who doesn't need a factory or machines of any kind to create his line of action figures- he just needs flip flops, scissors, a razor blade and some glue.

Filipino artist Elmer Padilla creates his awesome foam "action figures" out of old flip flops, which helps him make a little money to feed his family and helps clean up waste in Manila, where old flip flops are a major water pollutant.

Elmer's figures may not have as much poseable "action" as regular action figures, but his versions of the Transformers, Hellboy, Deadpool and Predator are so cool looking kids will definitely have fun playing with them.

The Boys of Bolshoi by Kurtiss Lloyd

by Costanza
Ivy Esquero

Sharing for the ballet moves

Contemporary Japanese Fishing Cabin by Masato Sekiya

by Julie
Ivy Esquero

normally like these modern structures, but this one feels claustrophobic to me

I miss these guys so much

New Stranger Things Ads Recreate Movie Posters From The 1980s

by Zeon Santos
Ivy Esquero

still too creepy for me, but these are cool

The Netflix original series Stranger Things made such a splash it almost singlehandedly made the major TV networks change their mind about the validity and profitability of streaming video, plus it's just a damn good show.

Stranger Things doesn't need to advertise to bring in viewers at this point, and people have been talking about the show non-stop since the season 2 premiere date was announced, but Netflix decided to create some cool promo posters anyway.

And as expected they looked to movie posters from the 80s for inspiration, creating slick looking posters starring Eleven and the gang based on posters from Jaws, A Nightmare On Elm Street, Stand By Me and more.

Stranger Things season 2 premieres on Netflix on October 27th, just in time for Halloween!

15 Best Asia destinations in November of 2021

by Roger Wade
Ivy Esquero

@andrew

In many ways November is the best month to visit Asia because most of the top destinations such as Bangkok and Hong Kong have excellent weather, but the big crowds don't start coming until just before Christmas. You can see on the list below that you have many excellent choices of destinations this month, and hotel prices are close to their yearly lows in many of them. In some cases it's better to visit in the second half of November because the beginning of the month can still be a bit rainy.

Those looking for beaches will be happy to see Phuket and Goa on the list, but there are many great cities that also have fine weather in November. You have so many great choices in southeast Asia that this is the perfect time to start a longer visit that spans several countries if you have the time.

This article was updated in July, 2021.

Important November 2021 Holidays

  • November 25 – Thanksgiving Day in the USA (major public holiday)

COVID-19 situation

As of the July, 2020 edit of this article, the COVID-19 situation is pretty bad through most of the world. Many travel destinations on the list below are closed to those from outside of the regions, but quite a few are now getting ready to accept visitors. Needless to say, you'll want to check the most current information for any destination before you book.

15 Best destinations in Asia for November

Bali, Indonesia

  • November avg high: 87°F/31°C
  • November avg low: 78°F/26°C
  • November avg precip: 6.1″/15.3cm

November is the start of the rainy season in Bali, but the first half of the month still tends to be dry, and the island is used to dealing with the quick downpours pretty efficiently. If you really dislike having to dodge 30-minute deluges then go in the first half of the month or go somewhere else.

Good news is that November is not one of the busier months in Bali, so hotel prices are low and Kuta Beach isn't as crowded as it is in June and July. If you want something more like Bali used to be before it became overdeveloped, head to Lovina on the northern coast.

  • Good 3-star hotels in November from $28 for two people
  • Good 4-star hotels in November from $90 for two people
  • Hostel dorm beds in November from $8 per person

Hong Kong

  • November avg high: 75°F/24°C
  • November avg low: 67°F/19°C
  • November avg precip: 1.4″/3.5cm

Hong Kong gets an insane amount of rain in the summer, and November is the first of its 5 dry months. November is also the warmest of those 5 dry months, so it's arguably the best month of the year to visit. Hotels won't be particularly crowded, although business-oriented hotels are pretty full most of the year.

You may have heard that Hong Kong is now one of the world's most expensive cities, and in some ways that's true, especially if you want to buy or rent a luxury apartment. But for hotels you can still get pretty good deals even for places that are well located. And if you follow the local workers into the noodle shops and such, you can eat pretty cheaply and authentically as well.

  • Good 3-star hotels in November from $173 for two people
  • Good 4-star hotels in November from $186 for two people
  • Hostel dorm beds in November from $35 per person

>>>Check current hotel promotions for Hong Kong
>>>Hong Kong prices and travel tips

Tokyo, Japan

  • November avg high: 62°F/17°C
  • November avg low: 49°F/9°C
  • November avg precip: 3.6″/9.0cm

If you look at those temperatures you might wonder how Tokyo wound up on this list for November. One problem Tokyo has is that the summers are quite hot and fairly rainy, so spring and autumn can actually be more pleasant for visitors.

Tokyo used to have a reputation as one of the world's most expensive cities, but prices have barely changed in the last 25 years and now it's similar to a mid-level European city in prices. In other words, you can find pretty good hotel and restaurant deals here if you look around a bit.

  • Good 3-star hotels in November from $138 for two people
  • Good 4-star hotels in November from $267 for two people
  • Hostel dorm beds in November from $25 per person

Luang Prabang, Laos

  • November avg high: 84°F/29°C
  • November avg low: 64°F/18°C
  • November avg precip: 1.1″/2.8cm

After an extremely rainy few months, much of the northern part of southeast Asia dries off in November and has very pleasant temperatures as well. In fact, November is probably the best month to visit Luang Prabang and many of its neighbors because the weather is just about perfect and the tourist crowds don't typically flood in until mid December.

Luang Prabang is a fantastic bargain considering how nice it is, and it's one of the highlights of the whole region. You can get very nice hotels here for the price of a dorm bed in Amsterdam, and you can eat for a day for the price of a couple beers in most European cities.

  • Good 3-star hotels in November from $35 for two people
  • Good 4-star hotels in November from $100 for two people
  • Hostel dorm beds in November from $6 per person

>>>Check hotel deals for Luang Prabang

Bangkok, Thailand

  • November avg high: 89°F/32°C
  • November avg low: 74°F/23°C
  • November avg precip: 1.9″/4.8cm

Bangkok is very rainy in summer and it's insanely hot in March and April. In other words, November through February are definitely the best months to visit, and November is the quietest of those months. The big crowds don't start appearing until mid December, so those who can visit in November will have some of the better attractions to themselves.

Hotel deals in Bangkok in November are also very appealing, and you can probably afford a much nicer place than you thought. It's even reasonably cool (relatively speaking) in the evening this time of year, so wandering the night markets is more enjoyable than it is during the hot months.

  • Good 3-star hotels in November from $58 for two people
  • Good 4-star hotels in November from $73 for two people
  • Hostel dorm beds in November from $8 per person

>>>Check hotel deals for Bangkok
>>>Bangkok prices and travel tips

Phuket, Thailand

  • November avg high: 88°F/31°C
  • November avg low: 75°F/24°C
  • November avg precip: 6.9″/17.3cm

The rainy season in Phuket runs through the middle of November or so, and it can be pretty bad so you might want to come later in the month. If you do arrive in the second half of November you'll practically have the place to yourself, and hotel deals will be easy to come by.

Even more than with the cities above, the beach crowds don't usually arrive in Phuket until Christmas or so. This means that this is probably the best time of year to visit, with nearly perfect weather and small crowds even on the popular beaches.

  • Good 3-star hotels in November from $41 for two people
  • Good 4-star hotels in November from $94 for two people
  • Hostel dorm beds in November from $10 per person

Chiang Mai, Thailand

  • November avg high: 86°F/30°C
  • November avg low: 66°F/19°C
  • November avg precip: 2.1″/5.3cm

Chiang Mai is a popular stop between Luang Prabang and Bangkok, which are also both on this list. And November is a very nice month for weather and smaller crowds, so it's an ideal time to visit. In case you aren't familiar with it, Chiang Mai is arguably Asia's best travel bargain any time of year, and the November hotel rates are even more reasonable than usual.

This is a city to linger in for those on longer trips because it's big enough to have everything and yet it's not as crowded and frenetic as Bangkok or other larger cities. Aside from the dozens of large temples, Chiang Mai isn't a particularly pretty place, but there are great outdoor activities and hikes all around so there is plenty to like about it.

  • Good 3-star hotels in November from $59 for two people
  • Good 4-star hotels in November from $94 for two people
  • Hostel dorm beds in November from $7 per person

>>>Check hotel deals for Chiang Mai

Siem Reap, Cambodia

  • November avg high: 89°F/32°C
  • November avg low: 73°F/23°C
  • November avg precip: 2.0″/5.0cm

If you are lucky enough to be on a November trip around southeast Asia then you should really look into adding Siem Reap to that trip. The November weather is very pleasant, and once again, the crowds are very small this time of year. In case you aren't familiar with it, Siem Reap is the fun little town you stay in while you visit the nearby Angkor Wat temples, which are arguably Asia's best single sight.

Siem Reap is another enjoyable place to hang around in because it's very mellow and yet there is a lot to see and do. Hotel deals are always good, and in November your money goes further than it does during the busy months just ahead.

  • Good 3-star hotels in November from $27 for two people
  • Good 4-star hotels in November from $45 for two people
  • Hostel dorm beds in November from $5 per person

>>>Check hotel deals for Siem Reap
>>>Siem Reap prices and travel tips

Hanoi, Vietnam

  • November avg high: 76°F/24°C
  • November avg low: 66°F/19°C
  • November avg precip: 1.6″/4.0cm

If you are doing a longer trip around southeast Asia in November you might also want to add Hanoi to the trip. Not only is it a fascinating city that is the launching point for trips to nearby Halong Bay, but it's also far enough north that you actually get nice evening temperatures. Most other destinations in the region are hot all year, so it's nice to mix a cool one in if you can.

Parts of Vietnam are still getting some rain in November so this may not be a perfect month to tour the whole country. But the two largest cities, including Ho Chi Minh City (below) are nice enough and you can get cheap flights between them. Hanoi is the cheaper of the two and many think it's more interesting as well. The food in Hanoi is arguably some of the best in all of Asia, with French influences easy to spot within the more traditional Asian elements.

  • Good 3-star hotels in November from $53 for two people
  • Good 4-star hotels in November from $59 for two people
  • Hostel dorm beds in November from $7 per person

>>>Check hotel deals for Hanoi
>>>Hanoi prices and travel tips

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

  • November avg high: 88°F/31°C
  • November avg low: 73°F/23°C
  • November avg precip: 4.5″/11.3cm

November isn't the driest month in Saigon, as it's usually called, but it's not bad and the storms tend to move through quickly. At least the evenings are reasonably cool in November, and if you come later in the month you might not see any rain at all.

This is a very large and busy city that is quite a bit more spread out than Hanoi. Hotels in the central area are also more expensive, but it's still probably worth staying in the center because getting around is not terribly easy unless you are comfortable riding pillion on a motorbike behind a local who speaks basically zero English.

  • Good 3-star hotels in November from $27 for two people
  • Good 4-star hotels in November from $78 for two people
  • Hostel dorm beds in November from $11 per person

Malé, Maldives

  • November avg high: 84°F/29°C
  • November avg low: 75°F/24°C
  • November avg precip: 9.1″/22.8cm

If you are looking at the numbers above you'll notice that November is a pretty rainy month in the capital of the Maldives. The good news is that it's not a very rainy month at most of the private-island resorts that this country is most famous for. Honestly, Malé itself is a bit of a dud and there isn't much to see or do. So you probably want to head to one of the island resorts instead anyway.

The Maldives isn't cheap either, and you may know that it has over 90 resorts with water villas. Those start at around US$300 per night and go way up from there, but you can get island and beach rooms at many of those same resorts starting much closer to US$100 per night. It's a unique destination that many people dream of doing at least once in their lives. There are some really nice bargains at all-inclusive resorts, especially for those who enjoy drinking on holiday.

  • Good 3-star hotels in November from $81 for two people
  • Good 4-star hotels in November from $148 for two people

Pokhara, Nepal

  • November avg high: 70°F/21°C
  • November avg low: 48°F/9°C
  • November avg precip: 0.1″/0.3cm

Nepal is one of the trekking capitals of the world, and Pokhara is the trekking capital of Nepal. November is one of only about 4 months with warm and dry weather here, so it's a perfect time to visit.

Another interesting thing about Pokhara is that it's one of the world's cheapest cities for basic expenses such as hotels, food, and drinks. If you want to do a multi-day trek with a good outfitter that will cost quite a bit extra, but if you want to just chill in a lovely lakeside town it will cost almost nothing.

  • Good 3-star hotels in November from $17 for two people
  • Good 4-star hotels in November from $77 for two people
  • Hostel dorm beds in November from $5 per person

Delhi/New Delhi, India

  • November avg high: 83°F/28°C
  • November avg low: 53°F/12°C
  • November avg precip: 0.3″/0.8cm

Delhi has some pretty extreme weather most of the year, but November is nearly a perfect month with warm days, cool nights, and almost no rain at all. This crowded city feels even more crowded and very dusty when it's hot, so visiting this time of year is a better idea.

There is plenty to see and do in Delhi (and New Delhi at its heart), including the famous day trip to Agra to visit the Taj Mahal. Most of India has very nice weather in November so this is a perfect time for a longer visit. The fairly new metro system in Delhi is very impressive and the new airport also makes visiting easier.

  • Good 3-star hotels in November from $34 for two people
  • Good 4-star hotels in November from $71 for two people
  • Hostel dorm beds in November from $6 per person

  • November avg high: 90°F/32°C
  • November avg low: 72°F/22°C
  • November avg precip: 1.3″/3.3cm

Goa is another Tropical beach area that has extremely rainy summers, but by November you can expect almost no rain at all. And of course the crowds don't start piling in until mid December or January, so you can have some of the beaches here almost to yourself.

Since the crowds are small in November you can get fantastic deals on hotels here. During the prime months the better beach resorts here can feel somewhat pricey, but in November you can get some of those same places for much less. Choose your exact destination here carefully though, because some are mostly party people and others are mostly families.

  • Good 3-star hotels in November from $42 for two people
  • Good 4-star hotels in November from $83 for two people
  • Hostel dorm beds in November from $4 per person

Mumbai, India

  • November avg high: 92°F/33°C
  • November avg low: 69°F/21°C
  • November avg precip: 0.2″/0.5cm

Mumbai isn't really known as a tourist city and it's also India's most expensive city for hotels and restaurants. But this is also where many longhaul flights into India will land, so many people will spend their first 2 or 3 days here. In November it's bone dry, which is nice compared to the famous monsoons that will have just concluded.

There is plenty to see and do here for at least three days or so, but all of India's big cities are so crowded that most people become tired of them quickly. In other words, don't plan on spending a week or more here, at least unless you've been here before.

  • Good 3-star hotels in November from $82 for two people
  • Good 4-star hotels in November from $99 for two people
  • Hostel dorm beds in November from $11 per person

A Polished Condo in Singapore With Carefully Considered "Clutter" — House Call

by Apartment Therapy Submissions
Ivy Esquero

Singapore! Also Andrew - I like their floors.

Name: Mario and Loki the Mini-Poodle
Location: Singapore
The basics: 5 years, owned— 1, 000 square feet

Mario's apartment is a mix of clean minimalism with a touch of curated mess, inspired by a trip to New York. With a neutral color scheme that uses black and white as an accent, the space is full of relaxed urban sophistication. It is also full of one very cute dog.

America's Favorite Home Retailer Might Surprise You (No, It's Not IKEA)

by Tara Bellucci
Ivy Esquero

So it's Costco (72) then Ikea (70). Here is how a few others fared: Target came in third with 68 percent, T.J. Maxx scored 64 percent and Kohl's 63 percent. TJX's home specific store, HomeGoods, snagged 62 percent and Bed, Bath & Beyond had 56 percent. I guess i forget Costco.

If you had one guess as to America's favorite home furnishings retailer, what would you pick? If it's blue and yellow and rhymes with "idea," then, I'm sorry, you're wrong. One company eeked out a win over the Swedish retailer, and which one it is might just surprise you.

Stunning & Inspiring Portraits Around the World

by Team Fubiz
Ivy Esquero

beautiful

This Is The Last Slave Leia Cosplay We'll Ever Need

by Zeon Santos

I thought Slave Leia costumes had been done to death until I saw this extra sexy version by Bearded Leia cosplay, which features the shaggy dog of the gender swap world and his handler.

The best part about this cosplay isn't the beard, or the fact that Bearded Leia is comfortable enough with his body that he's down to wear a golden bikini at a Con. No, the best part by far is that totally tubular Jabba the Hutt balloon sculpture!

by Zeon Santos
Ivy Esquero

I <3 him

Butterfly in the sky, I can go twice as hiiiigghh, take a look, it's in a book, a reading rainbooowww.... Did reading the lyrics put the theme song in your head?

Then you grew up watching Reading Rainbow, and you probably miss hearing LeVar Burton read books to you, knowing like I do that any audiobook he doesn't narrate is missing that LeVar magic.

If this describes you then you're going to be psyched to hear LeVar Burton is back and reading short stories for adults on his new ART19 podcast LeVar Burton Reads!

Here's the intro to get you hooked on LeVar again-

SpongeBob and Patrick Would Be Nightmarish in Real Life

omg nightmare

Whenever SpongeBob characters are shown "in real life" in the show or movies, they always appear as their real-life counterparts, be it a kitchen sponge, a starfish, a squirrel or a squid. But what if the characters were real with the same physical characteristics as the cartoons?

Well that's what artist Miguel Vasquez dreamed up in his incredible 3D creations. As you can see -the result is absolutely horrifying.

by Danielle Blundell

@baisley - here you go

Working from home is kind of the ultimate dream. You can wear your pajamas all day if you want, you never have to pack a lunch and the commute couldn't be better. The only issue is whether you have a solid workspace or not, because I think productivity does depend somewhat on your surroundings. The good news is that even if you don't have a full room to dedicate to an office, there are plenty of smart ways to sneak a hidden workspace into your home.

8 Best Asia destinations in August of 2021

by Roger Wade
Ivy Esquero

@baisley - Bangkok for National Day week? Long weekend?

Finding a good place to visit in Asia in August is challenging, in spite of the fact that it's such an enormous continent. Almost all of the best tourist destinations are along the coasts, and especially close to the equator, and almost all of them are very wet in August. There are a few great exceptions, which are listed below.

In a very few cases a destination will have its best weather in August or at least this time of year, but in most cases it's just a matter of that it's always hot in that place, and August isn't really any worse than the rest of the year. The larger cities are also usually easy to visit because you'll be spending much of your time indoors in the air conditioning anyway.

Important August 2021 holidays in Asia

  • August 12 – Queen’s Birthday Holiday in Thailand (major public holiday)
  • August 15 – National Liberation Day of Korea (major public holiday)
  • August 15 – India Independence Day (major public holiday)

Best destinations during COVID-19

As we all know, there is a global pandemic going on still in early 2021. Many countries are still closed to outsiders, but a surprising number are still open for visitors.

8 Best destinations in Asia for August

Bali, Indonesia

  • August avg high: 83F/28C
  • August avg low: 76F/24C
  • August avg precip: 0.9″/2.3cm

Almost all of Asia is insanely hot and rainy in August, and Bali (being slightly in the southern hemisphere) is one of the few places that is nearly dry and cooler than average for the year. Bali is also quite popular in August for this reason, so you won't be getting lonely if you come.

Most people head to the very crowded beach area of Kuta, Legian, and Seminyak, or the purpose-built resort area in the south called Nusa Dua. The arts and crafts capital is Ubud, which is in the foothills so it's even a bit cooler. More adventurous travelers will head to Lovina on the north coast, which is as mellow and pleasant as all of Bali used to be twenty years ago. We include Bali on our guide to the best unusual destinations around the world.

  • Good 4-star hotels in August from $84 for two people
  • Hostel dorm beds in August from $12 per person

Tokyo, Japan

  • August avg high: 87F/31C
  • August avg low: 76F/24C
  • August avg precip: 6.1″/15.3cm

As you can see above, Tokyo is very hot in August, and it does rain a bit as well. The good news is that Japan is great with air conditioning and most of the sights are indoors so you won't be out in the heat all that much anyway. Tokyo always feels 10 years in the future for most of us, and it's not nearly as expensive as it used to be either.

All of Japan is interesting in its own way, and getting out of Tokyo is wise if you have the time. It's easy to take high-speed trains to Kyoto and Osaka, which are also very interesting, not to mention a bit cheaper as well.

  • Good 3-star hotels in August from $94 for two people
  • Good 4-star hotels in August from $164 for two people
  • Hostel dorm beds in August from $23 per person

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

  • August avg high: 90F/32C
  • August avg low: 74F/23C
  • August avg precip: 6.1″/12.5cm

Kuala Lumpur is similar to Bangkok and Singapore (see below) in that it's hot every day of the year, so August is just another month. It can be a bit rainy in August as well, but fortunately the storms rarely last more than an hour or so, and there is plenty of shelter all over the city. Kuala Lumpur is my favorite Asian city after 5 or 6 visits because it's an affordable mix of so many different cultures, and it's modern enough to be easy to visit.

If you are flying a long way to get to KL you probably also want to visit more in Malaysia so you should consider Penang in the north and Malacca on your way down to Singapore. It's all hot in August, but they are used to it here at least.

  • Good 3-star hotels in August from $44 for two people
  • Good 4-star hotels in August from $55 for two people
  • Hostel dorm beds in August from $7 per person

>>>Check hotel deals for Kuala Lumpur
>>>Kuala Lumpur prices and travel tips

Singapore

  • August avg high: 87F/31C
  • August avg low: 78F/26C
  • August avg precip: 7.7″/19.3cm

If you are visiting KL (above) you should also visit Singapore on the same trip if you can. Hotels in Singapore are at least twice as expensive as in KL, but it's a place you have to see yourself to believe. The food is excellent and it can be quite cheap if you eat at the famous hawker centers rather than the air-conditioned sit-down restaurants. When searching for cheap hotel rooms in Singapore be aware that many of the cheapest ones have no windows at all. I find that annoying.

Singapore is known as a shopping city, but there is plenty more to do here as well. The Chinatown area is filled with stand-out temples and other sights, and some of the best food in the region is there as well. You can cool off in the enormous casino in the basement of the Marina Bay Sands, and take a short tour of the rooftop infinity pool for a reasonable price as well.

  • Good 3-star hotels in August from $108 for two people
  • Good 4-star hotels in August from $139 for two people
  • Hostel dorm beds in August from $12 per person

Colombo, Sri Lanka

  • August avg high: 86F/30C
  • August avg low: 77F/25C
  • August avg precip: 4.7″/11.8cm

Colombo is obviously the capital of Sri Lanka, but it's not a place you want to spend your whole visit to the country. It's just here as a placeholder for a visit to anywhere in southern Sri Lanka, which has pretty decent weather in August compared to almost anywhere else in Asia.

Sri Lanka has interesting hill towns and scenic forests in its interior, and some very nice beaches along the southern coast. You can easily spend two weeks in this country and wish you had longer. There aren't many hostels and cheap hotels, but you do get pretty good value if you can spend a bit more than that.

  • Good 3-star hotels in August from $55 for two people
  • Good 4-star hotels in August from $83 for two people
  • Hostel dorm beds in August from $10 per person

Bangkok, Thailand

  • August avg high: 91F/33C
  • August avg low: 77F/25C
  • August avg precip: 7.8″/19.5cm

Bangkok has the unfortunate record for being the hottest capital city in the world on average, as it's hot every day and almost every night of the year here. August is a scorcher and it does rain a bit, but this city is used to it and it's easy to find shelter for the 30 minutes or so that that storms typically last.

In addition to all of the famous temples and other sights, Bangkok has about 20 large shopping malls, most of them next to each other in the Siam Square area in the center. With this in mind you can spend all day inside, searching for bargains and having lunch, and then go out in the evenings when it's not so ridiculously hot anymore.

  • Good 4-star hotels in August from $42 for two people
  • Hostel dorm beds in August from $12 per person

Malé, Maldives

  • August avg high: 84F/29C
  • August avg low: 79F/26C
  • August avg precip: 6.9″/17.3cm

Similar to Sri Lanka (above), Male is just the capital city of the Maldives, and not a place you want to spend more than a day or two at most. You might know that the Maldives has most of the world's water villas and overwater bungalows. Those start at about US$300 per night, but there are beachfront and garden rooms at good resorts on nearby islands that start closer to US$100 per night.

August is a bit rainy in parts of this huge island chain, but the good news is that the storms almost always last 30 minutes or so, and often they take place overnight. The weather here is almost the same all year round, and since most people spend their time on the beach or out over the water, there is usually a pleasant breeze that keeps you comfortable.

  • Good 3-star hotels in August from $78 for two people
  • Good 4-star hotels in August from $144 for two people

Nha Trang, Vietnam

  • August avg high: 89F/32C
  • August avg low: 79F/26C
  • August avg precip: 2.1″/5.3cm

Most of Vietnam is very wet in August, but somehow the southern beach city of Nha Trang doesn't get the flooding rains that most of the rest of the country does. This is a very pleasant beach town that feels like a bit of a secret, partly because so few people have ever heard of it until they plan a Vietnam trip for the first time.

Hotels, food, and alcohol here are very cheap, even by southeast Asia standards. You won't find the glamorous shopping centers and chain restaurants like you find on Phuket, but if you don't need those sorts of things you'll probably enjoy it here a lot.

  • Good 3-star hotels in August from $20 for two people
  • Good 4-star hotels in August from $30 for two people
  • Hostel dorm beds in August from $6 per person
