Norway’s new pixelated banknotes are gorgeous

by Jason Kottke
Steve Dyer

HAHAHA YIKES WOW

Norway Banknotes

Norway Banknotes

Back in 2014, I posted that Norway would start using new banknotes in 2017 featuring an abstract pixelated design on the reverse of each note. Time did the only thing it knows how to do so here we are in 2017 and the bills will begin circulating later this year. The overall theme for the notes is “The Sea”:

Norway’s long, gnarled coastline has shaped the identity of Norwegians individually and as a nation. The use of marine resources, combined with the use of the sea as a transport artery, has been crucial to the development of Norwegian society.

And each particular note has its own subtheme:

The 50-krone banknote: The sea that binds us together
The 100-krone banknote: The sea that takes us out into the world
The 200-krone banknote: The sea that feeds us
The 500-krone banknote: The sea that gives us prosperity
The 1000-krone banknote: The sea that carries us forward

The final design concept by Terje Tønnessen was chosen from among several finalists. I love the final design but also really like the concept by Aslak Gurholt with a children’s drawing on the back of each note echoing the illustration on the front.

Norway Banknotes Gurholt

Also of note (ha!): Norges Bank crowdsourced several aspects of the design process but managed to do it in such a way as to avoid the Boaty McBoatface problem.

Khizr Khan Canadian Trip Canceled: ‘His Traveling Privileges are Being Reviewed’

by Andy Towle
Steve Dyer

what in fresh hell

Khizr Khan

Gold star father Khizr Khan has canceled a speaking engagement in Canada and was notified that “his traveling privileges are being reviewed” according to a notice from the event organizer:

Khan told CTV News Monday afternoon that he has “no comments at this time.”

An advertisement from Ramsay Talks had stated that Khan’s speech would be about “the appalling turn of events in Washington – that we don’t all end up sacrificing everything.”

The news comes amid the rollout of a revised Muslim travel ban from Donald Trump.

The Facebook post:

As Politico notes:

Khan became a national name when he blasted then-Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump from the stage of the Democratic National Convention, telling the GOP candidate he has “sacrificed nothing” and, as he held up a pocket-size Constitution, asked Trump if he had even read it.

Khan has been a U.S. citizen for more than 30 years, and his son, Humayun Khan, a University of Virginia graduate and Muslim American Army captain who died in Iraq in 2004, was posthumously awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart

Steve Reich is calling

by Jason Kottke
Steve Dyer

playing this thru speakers to make coworkers mad

Oh, this is just a little brilliant. Steve Reich is a composer famous for his experimentation with musical looping and phasing. His 1967 piece Piano Phase featured a pair of pianists repetitively performing the same piece at two slightly different tempos, forming a continually evolving musical round. Seth Kranzler took this idea and made a Reich-like piece with two iPhones ringing at slightly different tempos. Here’s a video of the effect in action:

Man, this is nerdy on so many levels and I am here for it.

A magically levitating helicopter, courtesy of a camera frame rate trick

by Jason Kottke
Steve Dyer

FACT CHECK: Heavier-than-air flight is impossible.

When you perfectly match a video camera’s frame rate to the rotation of a helicopter’s rotors as it takes off, it looks like it’s magically floating away on the breeze. Here’s an older video of the same effect that I probably posted back in the day. Here’s an explanation of the effect:

Since each frame has to ensure the blade is in the same position as the last it therefore needs to be in sync with the rpm of the rotar blades. Shutter speed then needs to be fast enough to freeze the blade without too much motion blur within each frame.

Here the rotor has five blades, now lets say the rpm of the rotor is 300. That means, per rotation, a blade is in a specific spot on five counts. That gives us an effective rpm of 1500. 1500rpm / 60secs = 25.

Therefore shooting at 25fps will ensure the rotor blades are shot in the same position every frame. Each frame then has to be shot at a fast enough shutter speed to freeze the blade for minimal motion blur.

This is basically the same technique used by John Edmark for his strobe light sculptures.

95-Year-Old Comes Out as Gay, and He’s Looking for Love: WATCH

by Andy Towle
Steve Dyer

hopping off of cherv's

90 years in the closet and he gets subjected to DAVY FUCKING WAVY, THE WORST SCUM IN THE UNIVERSE

95 gay

Davey Wavey spoke with Roman Blank, a 95-year-old Holocaust survivor who is the subject of a forthcoming documentary, On My Way Out. Roman lived his entire life as a married, closeted gay man, and decided to begin living that truth last year.

Roman tells Davey that he’s looking for the right companion:

“Yes…I don’t care [what he looks like]. I don’t look at the face. I look at the heart. Somebody to lean against, somebody who feels the heart ticking…and nobody can do that unless you love them.”

Writes Davey:

Roman’s story is very complex. On one hand, it’s the triumphant story of a 95 year old man coming out of the closet – and shedding the weight of a nine-decade secret. That is certainly something worth celebrating!

On the other hand, Roman’s story is also deeply emotional and, at times, quite difficult. At some level, it’s the story of lost opportunities. You can’t help but wonder, had the circumstances been different, how Roman’s story could have ended differently. And you also feel for Roman’s wife. While they undoubtedly loved each other in a deep way, both Roman and his wife deserve passion and sexual intimacy. Did they have that despite Roman being gay? I don’t know.

But despite the story’s complexity, Roman’s desire to feel the heartbeat of someone who loves him is fundamentally human. It’s a simple yearning that drives all of us. In it, we see Roman’s humanity. And we see ourselves.

I think there’s a lot to take from this video.

There’s a sense of history in understanding how far we’ve come, and the struggles that this man must have experienced.

There’s gratitude for the LGBT people who marched and rallied and bleed and sweat so that today’s world is different – and that fewer people feel compelled to live in the shadows or closets.

But there’s also raw humanity. Whether you are queer or not, listening to Roman stirs something in all of us. And at a time when the world often feels divisive and divided, it’s good to be reminded of our common humanity.

So about a year ago me and my friend Nathan were walking around the “Pick-a-Part” in Clarksville Tennessee… We were searching for car badges and a spoiler to put on his trashy conversion van. While going through the lot we found what is probably the single greatest car to ever drive on any road in the world.

You are looking at… a Dora the Explorer themed gangster car… I’ve seen spongebob themed cars, Newport themed cars, sports team themed cars, but THIS.

trumps them all.

OH BUT IT GETS SO MUCH BETTER!!!!

You see… there has to be a reason that a car like this…

Would end up in the junkyard… SO me and Nathan did some looking around and tried to figure out why…

I still can’t believe the decals on this…. wait…

HOLD ON ONE FUCKING SECOND!

OH!

OH MY FUCKING GOD!

YES! SOMEONE ACTUALLY GOT SHOT WHILE DRIVING THEIR DORA THE EXPLORER CAR IN CLARKSVILLE TENNESSEE!

And THAT, is the single greatest thing I’ve found in a junkyard to this day.

okay this is totally wild but i RECOGNIZE THIS CAR

and i actually have a picture of it from its functioning days - this is dated 2012 -

Van Gogh’s Starry Night painted on top of water

by Jason Kottke
Steve Dyer

:extremely Howard Hsu voice: HENNNNGNGGHHGHG

Artist Garip Ay recently painted van Gogh’s Starry Night (along with his self-portrait) on top of water. Ebru, or paper marbling, is an art form where paint or ink is splattered or “painted” on the surface of water. Typically the painted scene is then transferred to paper with the finished product resembling polished marble stone. But Ay records his marbling on video and the effect is pretty cool.

See also the art of making marbled paper, which is well worth your attention.

Beyoncé, Gavin Grimm, Russian Flags, CPAC, Moonlight, Mariah Carey, Steve Bannon: HOT LINKS

by Andy Towle
Steve Dyer

Please watch the first video of Laverne Cox just being the epitome of charm and grace! Also there's a hot dude saving a puppy further on but that is secondary concern.

STUMPED. Should Laverne Cox use the men’s room? “On last night’s episode of MSNBC’s Hardball, Weber appeared (via satellite) alongside two trans women: activist/actress/icon Laverne Cox and Mara Keisling, executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality. The show’s host Chris Matthews asked Weber, point blank, if Cox should use the men’s room.”

Gavin GrimmGAVIN GRIMM. Transgender teen moves forward with SCOTUS case: “Lawyers for Gavin Grimm, a transgender teen who is barred from using the boys’ bathroom at his Virginia high school, told the Supreme Court Thursday that his challenge to the school board policy should go forward, arguing that the restrooms ‘must be equally available to all boys and all girls, including boys and girls who are transgender.'”

CELEBS REACT. To Trump’s anti-trans action.

GOVERNORS STEP UP. To protect transgender students: “Both New York governor Andrew Cuomo and Connecticut governor Dannel Malloy have taken steps to protect the rights of transgender students in their states.”

COACHELLA. Beyoncé out.

NEW LEAK. Draft bill for GOP Obamacare replacement.

ZACHARY QUINTO. Actor uses Oscar Wilde Award speech to call out Trump: “I feel like as far as we’ve come in the last 120 years, there are protests going on tonight about the reversal of protections for transgender children in this country.”

BANNON ADMITS. Cabinet members selected to destroy their agencies.

A MILITARY OPERATION. Trump did not mean the actual military

RUSSIAN FLAGS. Confiscated at CPAC. “People attending the Conservative Political Action Conference could be seen waving small Russian flags emblazoned with the word “Trump” during President Trump’s speech.”

kids_trumpXXPENSIVE. Trump’s family costs taxpayers in one month as much as the Obama family cost in a year. “The president’s three trips have probably cost the federal Treasury about $10 million, the Washington Post estimates, based on an October 2016 Government Accountability Office analysis of White House travel. By comparison, Barack Obama’s travel expenses averaged just $12.1 million during each year of his presidency. In total, Obama’s eight year travel bill came to $97 million and unbelievably, Donald Trump is on pace to outspend him in less than one year.”

PORTLAND. Man says he was beaten for being gay: “The man says he remembers going to happy hour at a local bar, where he believes he was drugged. He says he was escorted out of the bar and from there his memory is fuzzy.”

NEW HAMPSHIRE. State Senate passes ban on gay conversion therapy.

Brian BrownFAKE NEWS? NOM claims that the recent study that revealed LGBT suicides have dropped with the rise of marriage equality is fake news: “But like much of the fake news coverage this study has generated, the study itself leads people to a fake conclusion: that somehow the enactment of same-sex ‘marriage’ results in reduced teen suicide attempts, especially for LGBT teens. In fact, the study proves nothing of the sort. Indeed, some data in the report suggest the opposite may be true in states that have had experience with same-sex marriage the longest.”

MoonlightMOONLIGHT. Secrets from the most suspenseful scene.

DANCING WITH THE HAS BEENS. Hillary said no. “For Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, the mirrorball trophy is no consolation prize. In the new issue of Us Weekly, a Dancing With the Stars source reveals producers asked the 69-year-old politician if she would be interested in strutting her stuff on season 24 of the ABC ballroom competition. Says the source: ‘She said no.'”

BEY KIND. Beyoncé voices support for LGBTQ students.

MARIAH CAREY. She performed “One More Try” as a tribute to George Michael, in Dubai..

LAKE RESCUE. Icy pooch saved, but not before buff dude gets an ice bath.

CHINA. Siberian tigers take down a drone.

FRIDAY FLASH. Sean Samuels.

North Korean tragedy markets in everything

by Tyler Cowen

The Indonesian woman arrested for suspected involvement in the killing of the North Korean leader’s half brother in Malaysia was duped into thinking she was part of a comedy show prank, Indonesia’s national police chief said Friday, citing information received from Malaysian authorities.

Tito Karnavian told reporters in Indonesia’s Aceh province that Siti Aisyah, 25, was paid to be involved in “Just For Laughs” style pranks, a reference to a popular hidden camera show.

He said she and another woman performed stunts which involved convincing men to close their eyes and then spraying them with water.

Here is the story, via Ray Lopez.

Gaping California Glory Hole Open for First Time in a Decade: WATCH

by Andy Towle
Steve Dyer

Congratulations to California for being GLORIOUSLY DAMP

glory hole

The ‘Glory Hole’ spillway has overflowed in California’s Lake Berryessa for the first time in 10 years, due to heavy rains in the state, and the unusual water sphincter has been captured in majestic drone footage.

The Register writes:

In this case, the spillway is in the lake created by the building of the Monticello hydroelectric dam in 1963, which has been filling up in recent weeks as the California countryside has been lashed with heavier than usual storms.

The glory hole, a 72-foot (22-metre) in diameter spillway capable of swallowing up 48,400 cubic feet of water per second, is now in operation and is drawing spectators keen to get an eyeful.

“I would say it’s a big drain in the lake,” said Sarah McBride, a public affairs specialist with the Bureau of Reclamation. “It’s unusual to see a spillway like that. We have people coming out there. It’s definitely a sight to see.”

Aside from public interest, the unusual spillway is also generating some fun headlines:
