by ufunk

by ufunk

Vancouver-based artist Ed Spence is making some of my favourite work right now. I dropped by his studio a couple weeks ago and I couldn’t leave without buying a piece. Let me explain to you what you’re looking at.

Ed takes a photograph of a crumpled piece of reflective paper. Then he prints the image and cuts out a section of it using a blade. He carefully cuts up the section into small “pixels” and re-arranges them based on colour. So if you were to run your hand along the finished photograph you would feel the texture of the cut pieces.

You kinda have to see these in person to really get the full effect. Really fantastic stuff! Lots more images below. The one I bought is the next one down.

kardafricanz:

This is Iceberg, the first white orca whale on earth. Scientists studying a pod of orcas saw his pure white dorsal fin breaking the surface and followed him, thinking that this was a trick of the eye. But Iceberg is the first reported albino killer whale, living in a large pod. Behavioural experts believed that orcas would exile a whale that did not look like the rest of the pod, but since Iceberg was born, his pod has accepted him and he is living a happy and healthy life.

Proving that whales are smarter than people.

Social Pool by Alfredo Barsuglia

by Anke Nunheim

In the middle of the California desert and a few hours away from LA you’ll find the minimalist art sculpture Social Pool by viennese artist Alfredo Barsuglia. It’s an 4qm wide pool in the Mojave desert, open for anybody to use, but neither signs nor paths lead you there. The white, geometric sculpture just allows for one or two people to stand or sit on either of its sides. Barsuglia stipulated that only one person or small party at a time can use the pool, and for no longer than 24 hours. MAK Center for Art and Architecture has the only key for the cover of the pool and the GPRS data. The visiting season is May 1st through September 30th, seven days a week. Reservations are recommended.

In a globalized world where anything is accessible anytime it was Barsuglias intention that the visitors who are on their long way to the pool, come to rest, find time to think about their life and social values and reflecting their own reality.
