Dear Confused,

Is one not allowed to like bacon AND exercise? I get that it's kind of ironic, but still...

Creationist Complains That His Side Isn’t Getting Equal Time on Cosmos

by Hemant Mehta
Lrbever

Because there's no room for Creationists when there's science at foot!

Creationist Danny Faulkner (below) of Answers In Genesis appeared on the “Janet Mefferd Show” late last week to complain about how Cosmos is being totally unfair. You see, it’s just promoting science. It’s not giving equal time to bullshit.

Mefferd: Do they do any interviews with scientists themselves during this whole thing? And do they ever give a Creationist any time?

Faulkner: Well, no. Creationists aren’t even on the radar screen for them; they wouldn’t even consider us plausible at all. I don’t recall having seen any interviews with people — that may yet come — but it’s based upon the narration of the host and various types of little video clips… cartoons, things like that.

Mefferd: Boy, but when you have so many scientists who simply do not accept Darwinian evolution, it seems to me that that might be something to throw in there. You know, the old, “some scientists say this; others disagree and think this,” but that’s not even allowed.

Faulkner: No, there’s not even the recognition that abiogenesis, belief in that is contrary to good science… Consideration of special Creation is definitely not open for discussion it would seem.

Of course, Faulkner has this crazy idea that Creationism and evolution are deserving of equal time even though only evolution is backed up by the evidence… and considering how little time is allocated to legitimate science programming these days, we should be seeing Neil deGrasse Tyson making the argument for equal time, not a Creationist.

Tell you what: I’m sure Cosmos will give you equal time on the show as soon as pastors start giving equal time to atheists in church. That makes just as much sense as whatever Faulkner said.

Faulkner is the same guy, by the way, who recently tried to explain away the whole gravitational waves discovery by saying science changes, so let’s not put our trust in it.

Poll Results: Who is the Best New Supporting Character?

by Sethisto
Lrbever

They did a poll to see the best supporting character of season 4 was. Take a look at who won.

Look at how excited Maud is.  You guys really made her day.  I'm pretty sure 9/10 ponies expected Coco Pommel to win.  Or at least I did.  Way to disappoint me.  Cocobestpony.

NEXT POLL: We have a recommended poll from someone named Nihongon.  Do you watch the MLP Intro song when viewing episodes?  Hit it up on the side bar!

Are we bibliotaphs?

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Coulter_-_San_Francisco.jpg

bibliotaph
n. a hoarder of books

In the rare book collection of the archives at Caltech is a copy of Adrien-Marie Legendre’s 1808 text on number theory. It comes from the collection of Eric Temple Bell, who taught mathematics at Caltech from 1926 to 1953. Inside the book is an inscription in Bell’s handwriting:

This book survived the San Francisco Earthquake and Fire of 18 April, 1906. It was buried with about 600 others, in a vacant lot, before the fire reached the spot. The house next door to the lot fell upon the cache; the tar from the roof baked the 4 feet of dirt, covering the books, to brick, and incinerated all but 4 books, of which this is one. Signed: E. T. Bell. Book buried just below Grace Church, at California and Stockton Streets. House number 729 California Street.

During the Great Fire of London in 1666, Samuel Pepys came upon Sir William Batten burying his wine in a pit in his garden. Pepys “took the opportunity of laying all the papers of my office that I could not otherwise dispose of” and later buried “my Parmazan cheese, as well as my wine and some other things.” I don’t know whether he ever recovered them.

deGrasse Tyson continues to be a growing hero of mine.

SkeptiSketch‘s latest video takes an awkwardly-worded, downright-weird question asked of Neil deGrasse Tyson at one of his talks, and the fabulous response given by Tyson, and puts it all together with a stunning visual:

How Bill Nye Changed the World

You can induce hallucinations with a ping pong ball and a portable radio!

Lrbever

wow

You can induce hallucinations with a ping pong ball and a portable radio!

The human brain is all about interpretation. It gathers information coming in from the senses and interprets it as something meaningful to the person owning the brain. This might be a pain response to a hot surface or a pleasure response to an appealing visual effect.

Because the brain is so heavily reliant on being fed information from the senses, when you deprive it of this flow, strange things can happen. Spend some time in a sensory deprivation tank and you will likely start to hallucinate at the very least.

But, you can achieve a similar result with some every day household items. Grab your portable radio and tune it off station until you get a steady flow of static. Now, take a ping pong ball, cut it in half and tape one half over each of your eyes. Lie down next to the radio and wait.

After a little while the brain will start to get bothered about not receiving any meaningful information from your two most powerful senses and it will start creating things on it's own.

The effect is known as the Ganzfeld effect and while results will vary per person, most folk report seeing vivid hallucinations within a few minutes.
