Enjoying the last of summer

by noreply@blogger.com (Murray Dewhurst)
I get the feeling from everyones posts that summer is well overdue in the northern hemisphere. The upside for us is the summer just keeps rolling on! Sadly we can feel it coming to an end and the opportunity to use a batch on Waiheke Island at Easter to enjoy the last of the nice days was snapped up. Waiheke is a small island of about 8000 inhabitants a short boat trip from Auckland that gets swamped at holiday periods. It's quickly becoming more urban than the natural escape destination we like to think it is.

The car ferry from Half Moon bay. The ferry travels around Motukorea Island, one of Auckland's 50 odd dormant volcanoes...

Batch at Omiha, Waiheke Island
The bach. Lots of yachts and launches starting to arrive from Auckand for the weekend. This tree stump made a really good sketching stool...

There just happened to be a fishing competition on at Rocky Bay on the Saturday and we had taken the kids rods. Despite dad (me) being the worlds worst fisherman, they still wanted to enter. Naturally we got no bites and we lost a lot of gear on the rocks.
Tackle box...

Beach cricket and swimming at Palm Beach. The water is still warm for this time of year (around 21°C)...

We checked out the old gun emplacements and tunnels at Stony Batter then headed down the hill to Hook Bay, about a 40 minute walk, for a swim. The view is great, right across to Mt Moehau at the top of the Coromandel peninsular which looks really close from here. We basked in sunshine while an isolated shower moved over Mt Moehau...

Some Waiheke Island 'wildlife'; some persistent sheep who tried to get into our lunch, and a Weka. This one appeared from the bush at Stony Batter, the first Weka I've actually seen in the North Island, probably a result of DOCs reintroduction strategy to the gulf islands.
And below Tuatuas, a delicious shellfood that thrive on surf beaches. To gather tuatua you wait until low tide then do a sort of dance we like to call the Tuatua Twostep a twist like movement while digging your feet into the sand. Traditionally done with a hopeful expression on your face.

More wildlife, the family watching a TV movie...

Pizza stop at Stefanos, sitting out back by the banana palms. I recommend
the Caterina pizza...

The trip back to Auckland, with Motukorea and downtown Auckland behind...

Back to work and roll on winter!

Shut Up and Take My Money of the Day: The QWERTY Sofa

Italian design and architecture firm ZO_loft wants to reinvent the idea of falling asleep on your keyboard ...by turning your couch into a keyboard! Additionally, each key tile contains remote-controlled micro electric motors that make all of them completely adjustable.
