Director Alex Garland Explains Why Ex Machina Is So Disturbingly Sexy

by Charlie Jane Anders

You've probably seen some pretty sexy robotic imagery from Ex Machina — and yet, it's kind of weird and off-putting as well. The new film from 28 Days Later and Dredd writer Alex Garland, takes the "sexualized robot" archetype and makes it weirder. We talked to Garland about why his robot is both sexy and disturbing.

Government Report Confirms Vegan Lifestyle Really Is Better for Your Body and Your Planet

by sophie.kleeman@gmail.com (Sophie Kleeman)

Put down the pork chops, America. Let go of the cheese.

According to the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee's 2015 report, Americans should be eating a diet higher in plant-based foods and lower in some animal-based foods. The federally appointed committee's study found that besides the health benefits, a vegan diet also is also better for the environment, being associated with fewer greenhouse gas emissions and less use of energy, land and water.

Other diets, such as vegetarian and pesco-vegetarian, also had higher predicted health scores and higher estimated sustainability scores. Nevertheless, diets with no animal products at all — dairy or meat — were far better for the environment than any alternative.

VICE Premiere: Listen to Cold Cave's Haunting Deep Cut 'Nausea, the Earth, and Me'

by Charlie Ambler

It's pretty hard to do anything new these days. The easiest cop-out is to make derivative garage rock or vaporwave and then, if you dress enough like Mac Demarco or Mike tha Ruler, you might end up getting a record deal. That said, some people have a special knack for hat-tipping past styles without being a totally derivative caricature. That's a real feat in 2015. Cold Cave, the electronic music project of Deathwish Inc. hardcore musician Wesley Eisold, is one such diamond in the rough.

Eisold has spent the greater part of eight years developing his own special blend of 80s-influenced darkwave, tinted with synth-pop and plenty of experimental noise and electronics. So we're proud to remind you of the existence of "Nausea, the Earth, and Me," which will appear on Cold Cave's upcoming vinyl LP, Full Cold Moon, a compilation of Eisold's scantily-released EPs. A few of these EPs had limited CD releases back in 2013, but this is the first time it's getting put on wax. It'll drop on June 16 by Deathwish Inc. So put on your eyeliner and crucifix, say a prayer to your poster of Robert Smith, and listen to some Cold Cave.

Find more info about Cold Cave's vinyl release of Full Cold Moon visit DeathWishInc.com.

We Really Like This Mashup Of Carly Rae Jepsen and Nine Inch Nails

by Matt Delhauer

Oh, the mash-up. If there were one thing the internet can’t seem to get enough of, it is slamming two near-opposite pieces of pop culture together to create something ironically beautiful. The music mashup is an editing art form in and of itself and, when done right, can truly surpass the source material. This seems quite true of the mash-up made by YepImTheToaster (YITT for short) that marries the newest Carly Rae Jepsen hit, “I Really Like You,” with the classic Nine Inch Nails song “Head Like A Hole.”

This is not the first time Mr. Reznor and Ms. Jepsen have met in the world of musical combination, and thanks to the constant love seen by mash-ups, there is a chance it won’t be the last. Whether it is t-shirts that blend company logos with comic book characters, placing the audio from one film or TV show over the video of another, or combining songs from different artists, this cultural shift of re-purpose and recycle is almost the calling card of the millennial artist. When it comes to music mash-ups, it is usually the pop songs of the time that get mixed in with pieces of heavy metal or industrial music to create a song that is quite confused on what its emotional tone is. Strangely enough, it seems Trent Reznor is a favorite source of many mash-up artists. Some may remember we covered the video that combined his song “The Perfect Drug” with Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” a couple of months ago.

While the dark and heavy tone of Reznor’s music may make it a tempting target for parody, it could also be attributed to the ease at which his material can be obtained. Reznor has long been an advocate for those to discover their own abilities and sounds in music and has previously offered full work-print files of his songs for fans to cut and mix how they see fit. With what we have seen made by these mash-ups, we can only hope to see more in the future.

What is your favorite music mash-up? Who else do you think would pair well with a Nine Inch Nails song? Let us know in the comments below.

Watch Jon Snow Absolutely Ruin Seth Meyers' Dinner Party

by Kelly Faircloth

this is actually amazing

Poor Jon Snow. He just hasn’t had many opportunities to develop great conversational skills, sulking back and forth across the Wall. That’s the basis of this Late Night with Seth Meyers sketch, which plunks Jon down in a New York City dinner party. It’s not exactly his forte.

A guide to all 456 deaths (including a pigeon) on Game of Thrones

by Alex Abad-Santos

HBO's Game of Thrones is a story of grand design. There are what seems to be a million moving parts, dozens of characters, a bevy of different families, and at least 37 different subplots going on at a time. Keeping up can be daunting but is ultimately enriching for those loyal fans who can follow along.

That's what makes the Washington Post's illustrated guide to the 456 GoT deaths so very good. The Post catalogued each death, the episode in which it happened, the killer, the deceased's allegiance, and the method for all of the characters, including a pigeon:

(The Washington Post)

The Post's work is an impressive feat that makes you appreciate the work and research that went into watching each episode, and the time it took to compile all this data. It's a good refresher to read before this Sunday's season premiere. Though for the sake of all the people involved in this extensive project, we hope they'll get to watch at least a few episodes, take a breath, and relax before the bloodbath begins.

Head on over to the Washington Post for a full look at their database of death.

Does This Couple Have The Best Married Name? Or the Absolute Worst?

by Mark Shrayber

while i'm still glad i didn't go for bridget bordeaux this is still pretty amazing

When preparing for marriage, ample time needs to be spent on the question of whether to change your last name, hyphenate it or just leave the entire thing alone. One Illinois couple, now gaining national attention, has decided to go all in with their new last names. And you know what? I’m loving it. Or having it my way. Wait, which one is which?

I Draw Animal Watercolors Inspired By My Time Spent Living In The Wild

by st.janie

My name is Janie Stapleton, and I’m an artist. What I do is go outside, paint, then go outside again.

Five years ago, my uncle told me to stop thinking about a career, and asked me “What do you want to see outside every morning?” At the time, I was on my way to Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. But after that, I ran away to the woods and launched myself into the world of primitive skills. There I studied herbal medicine, lived in a bark tipi, made fire with sticks, trapped animals with deadfalls, and drank an obscene amount of tea. For almost three years, I didn’t touch my brushes once. I thought that I was done painting.

But as I studied what I love, I began to need art again. So I returned to my paintings. Now my life has become a rhythm of wilderness wanderlust and long hours spent painting afterwards. I stumbled into a life that feels well lived and it all started with, “What do you want to see out the window every morning?“.

I wanted to see the woods…

Rescued Fennec Fox Reunites With Its Best Friend – A Cat

by Dovas
Bridget

as usual the cat does not give a fuck

Unusual animal friendships are always adorable, and this friendship between Rupert, a rescued wild fennec fox, and William, a big black cat at the International Primate Rescue shelter in South Africa, is no different.

Volunteers at the shelter captured video footage of the two best friends being reunited after spending some time apart. Rupert was hand-raised since he was 4 weeks old with William at his side. Rupert’s clearly very excited to have his friend back at his side!
