Goat Kicked Out Of Tim Hortons For Loitering Without Buying Anything

by Laura Northrup

ctv_goatIn defense of a loiterer who sought shelter in the vestibule of a Tim Hortons outlet in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan, there is no sign that says, “No Goats Allowed.” They ban skateboarding and biking, but not seeking shelter in that area while being a goat. Yet store employees called the Mounties anyway, probably because the goat was loitering without even buying a coffee.

The animal first entered the store through the automatic doors, since those don’t have any kind of species lock on them. Employees tried to encourage it to go back outside, but it wouldn’t stay. Police suspect that the animal was looking for a warm place to sleep.

The officers finally brought the goat to their vehicle, but it resisted “arrest” and was unhappy to lose its donut-scented sleeping spot. The officers brought it to a local vet, where it stayed overnight until the officers finally located the farm where it belonged.

The goat has returned home, probably to regale its barnyard friends with thrilling stories of automatic glass doors, double-doubles (that’s a coffee with two creams and two sugars) and frosted pastries.

Why Does The Flu Vaccine Suck This Year?

by Matt McCarthy on Regressing, shared by Meg Neal to Gizmodo

Why Does The Flu Vaccine Suck This Year?

Did you get your flu shot? I didn't really want to (I hate needles) but as an infectious disease physician at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, it would be exceedingly poor form if I opted out. My job requires it, and I recommend the vaccine to just about every patient, every day. The shot doesn't actually hurt, and if you look at the terrifying data—influenza kills between 3,000 and 50,000 Americans every year—it seems insane not to get immunized. Annual vaccination reduces your chance of dying from the virus by more than 40 percent! But on Wednesday, the Centers for Disease Control announced that this year's vaccine kinda sucks. To be specific, it's less than 50 percent effective against the predominant strain of circulating virus. So what went wrong?

The OXD Mirror: Plastic Plates Remixes a Runway Anthem and more

by Occupy the Disco

Disciples - 'Catwalk (Plastic Plates Remix)'

Collectively, the three of us at Occupy The Disco are all fans of the voguing and ball scene era (as documented in the classic Paris is Burning) and the music that inspired the mainstream rise of club music.  It's no surprise that a dance song titled 'Catwalk' is a direct homage to that voguing and runway culture.  The song is the title track of London-based Disciples' sophomore release. Plastic Plates, who you've all seen us feature on here more times than I can recollect, gave the track an even more runway-appropriate take by removing some of the hardness of the original track while infusing in beats worthy of a fierce strut, hair flip, or fan wave.

More new music  AFTER THE JUMP...

Continuing on the trend of high-energy, dance-able songs, New York City's The Knocks are back with a new single featuring the X Ambassadors called 'Comfortable'.  They hooked up with Rogue Vogue who, true to their name, remix and create original vogue-worthy tracks as they've clearly done for 'Comfortable.'

On the heels of his label French Express' showcase at Miami's famous Winter Music Conference today, Jonas Rathsman has released 'Hope I'm Wrong'. It's a vocal-centric club banger that manages to incorporate kiddie Casio keyboard loops into a sophisticated dance track. Rathsman, though relatively new to the nu-disco scene, has shown a unique command of lush sounds, beautiful vocals and stellar production in just a short period of time.

Todd Terje returns with a surprising track featuring vocals from Bryan Ferry, lead singer of Roxy Music and known for solo work like 'Slave to Love.' The sweet track has classic 80's synths and the feel of a midtempo ballad.  Not quite what you'd expect from Terje, but it's lovely nonetheless.

'Planet Love' by Outboxx is an energetic and highly danceable track from the Bristol-based duo. They've sought out in their work to fuse back jazz's smokiness along with key-driven hooks that are a direct throwback to the classic days of house music. I look forward to hearing the rest of the tracks to come from their EP, also titled Planet Love

NYC Is Tracking RFID Toll Collection Tags All Over the City

by Soulskill
In the northeast U.S., most of the tolls people encounter when driving make use of a system called E-ZPass to let them pay the tolls electronically. Drivers are given small RFID transponders that are scanned in tollbooths, at which point the toll is automatically deducted from a pre-paid account. One hacker got curious whether the RFID tags were being scanned elsewhere, so he tweaked his E-ZPass to blink a light and make a noise every time it was read. He tested the streets of New York City, and wasn't surprised to see it light up in plenty of places where there were no tollbooths to be found. From the article: "It’s part of Midtown in Motion, an initiative to feed information from lots of sensors into New York’s traffic management center. A spokesperson for the New York Department of Transportation, Scott Gastel, says the E-Z Pass readers are on highways across the city, and on streets in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island, and have been in use for years. The city uses the data from the readers to provide real-time traffic information, as for this tool. The DoT was not forthcoming about what exactly was read from the passes or how long geolocation information from the passes was kept. Notably, the fact that E-ZPasses will be used as a tracking device outside of toll payment, is not disclosed anywhere that I could see in the terms and conditions. When I talked to the E-ZPass Inter-agency Group — the umbrella association that oversees the use of the pay-toll-paying tags in 15 different states — it said New York is the only state that is employing this inventive re-use of the tags. ... 'If NYDOT can put up readers, says [the hacker], 'other agencies could as well.'"
