So, these tweets happened.

The way I see it, “Slave Leia” embodies the objectification, sexism, and fetishization of Princess Leia in that metal bikini in Return of the Jedi, while also highlighting that she was passive and helpless at the mercy of Jabba the Hutt.

“Leia the Huttslayer” is a badass who takes matters into her own hands and strangles the life out of that disgusting sexist slug that dared to control her with the very chain he tried to leash her with. (Also, it’s way more metal, and if a girl’s gotta wear a metal bikini she’s earned a metal epithet to go with it.)

So, this is doing the rounds.

Huttslayer indeed

There are two kinds of magic...

unseenphil:

…as practiced in these parts. There’s Cunning Magic, and Clever Magic. Now you might think as these mean the same thing, but as it happens, there’s a very important distinction.

Cunning magic is for the wise. Old wisdom, common sense. A cunning man or woman knows the old folk ways. They can treat bold hives, cure common ailments, fight curses, (or make ‘em, when needful.)  It ain’t necessarily exciting, but it gets the job done, and most everyone knows to go see their local cunningif there’s a breech birth or a sick child. Cunningfolk are respected, but since they make their homes with the regular folk, they’re apt to be blamed if anything goes wrong in town.

Clever magic is for the foolish, at least if you try to rely on it.  It’s the magic you luck into, that you swindle out of angel or a devil, or overhear by an accident. It’s a secret word that can make someone not leave the outhouse for 3 days if you whisper it in their ear, the secret sigil you can carve on a rifle to make it never miss, the bag that can hold death itself. But Clever magic always has a hidden cost, and will slip out of your hands or be used against you if you’re not careful, and many folks who get their hands on a bit of clever magic aren’t. The Clever are often heroes, but often as not disgraced ones.

There are other kinds of magic out there, but trust me; if you want to make a bargain at the crossroads for the sort of power that fella offers, you’d best be Clever, or the price will be way too high.

“Way to go Carrie! Carrie Fisher wore the famous Star Wars slave bikini when she was 27. She’s now 59 and back as General Leia Organa in “The Force Awakens.”

Apparently, some viewers thought she should look exactly as she did 32 years ago. Fisher has been the subject of online body-shaming and hateful social media posts following the opening the film.

She responded with her own tweets: “Please stop debating about whether or not I aged well. Youth and beauty are not accomplishments, they’re the temporary happy by-products of time and/or DNA. Don’t hold your breath for either.” Fisher admitted earlier this year that she was pressured to lose 35 pounds for the role. “Nothing changes, it’s an appearance-driven thing. I’m in a business where the only thing that matters is weight and appearance. That is so messed up. They might as well say get younger, because that’s how easy it is.”

“What I didn’t realize, back when I was this twenty-five-year-old pinup for geeks in that me myself and iconic metal bikini, was that I had signed an invisible contract to stay looking the exact same way for the next thirty to forty years. Well, clearly I’ve broken that contract. Partly because, in an effort to keep up my disguise as a human being, I had a child at some point. And then, in an effort to stay sane for said child, I took pounds and pounds of medications that have the dual effect of causing water retention (think ocean, not lake) while also creating a craving for salad—chocolate salad. So yes, in answer to your unexpressed question, sanity does turn out to come at a heavy price.”

kismetics:

I love my dad.

He’s a bit older and doesn’t spend much time online so he’s not really aware of the #NotAllMen #YesAllWomen thing or that ‘meninism’ is a term being used now.

But the other day I was explaining to him that women are speaking out about sexism and rape culture because YES ALL WOMEN experience these things; and that quite a lot of men were responding with “Okay, but NOT ALL MEN are like that.”

And my father’s response was just,
“Okay so if you’re a man who says he’s not ‘like that’ then you should be trying to do something about men who ARE, instead of complaining that women are tired of being treated like crap.”

[Rey] actually had more real-life experience as an on-your-own desert scavenger than both Luke and Anakin before any of their adventures began. In his first scenes, Luke whined about going to get more Legos or whatever at Toshi station. In her first scenes, Rey rappelled through the innards of a mother fucking star destroyer and then beat the shit out of some desert bad guys.

And she’s the one who’s not believable as the hero?

fuckyeahreyandfinn:

“What makes me love Finn so much,” he says, “is for years and years, the definition of a hero has been such BS.” Not only was the valiant protagonist a handsome, able-bodied, white male—a type that is gradually receding in mainstream culture, as “The Force Awakens” proves—he always exuded an unwavering sure-footedness, both unrealistic and unexciting to Boyega.

“It’s a bit of a narrow kind of definition, and for me it was a conscious choice to keep Finn as normal as possible,” he says. “He doesn’t consider himself a hero, which is something I quite like. Have you seen the way Superman flies around? That man knows he’s a freaking superhero! Chill, man.” - John Boyega for Backstage

Random Name Thought

ThePrettiestOne

It actually makes sense, since he's a commoner who married into a politically powerful family. It might not be so much a feminist thing as a classism thing.

star-anise:

librationpoint:

So “The Force Awakens” has a lot of stuff going on with names. Finn doesn’t have one at all until he meets Poe, Rey has just one and doesn’t know anything about her family. Kylo Ren replaced his while trying to convince himself he can be as badass as Vader. (Good luck with that.) Poe Dameron is the only person in the younger generation with two names - even Hux and Phasma have just the one we know - and he’s also the only one who knows who he is, what he’s doing, and in general has his shit together.

Meanwhile, Leia is still explicitly Leia Organa, no ‘Solo’ hanging off it. A lot of people assume that Ben’s original name is Solo, and yet there’s no actual evidence for that. When we meet Han, Rey asks if he’s really Han Solo, and his response is “Well, I was.”  Sooooooo…. I think what I’m trying to get here is that, if anyone took the other’s name in that marriage, it was Han. People just keep calling him Solo because that’s what he’s famous by.

ThePrettiestOne

Gods, I wanna go half an hour without crying about this movie, people...

Ugh god I just need to talk about how important Finn Dameron shut up is right now, okay?

He starts out a young black man with his entire humanity denied to the point where he doesn’t even get a name, okay, he’s literally nameless, faceless canon fodder, one of thousands.  And he’s assumed to be violent, it’s assumed that he will get bloody on command, that he’s obedient and savage at the same time.

And instead he’s soft.  Not weak, but kind.  Not cowardly – he’s not afraid of the violence.  He refuses violence.  He sees innocents hurt, he sees his friends fall, and then he rejects literally years of training and brainwashing.  His mind and soul are both powerful things, forces for the light side, immutably so.

He rebels successfully - cleverly, with a plan that’s simple but effective.  He doesn’t just go AWOL, he rescues someone in the process.  He is a moral compass from the start, pointing us towards true good.  He is the worlds worst liar, dear god, and when he claims to be part of the rebellion it’s not just because it’ll get him to where he needs, to be, but because he desperately wants to be seen as a good person.  No – he wants to be a good person.  No wait – he is a good person, and now he has the opportunity to show it.

And they try to kill him for it.  Over and over and over.

He will engage in violence, sure. but when he does it’s in defense of his life and his friends and his new family.  When he’s on the run, beyond hungry and thirsty and should be hiding, he creates a stir and tries to rescue a girl when everyone else was ignoring the attacks.

More than anyone else in this movie, Finn’s instincts are to do the right thing, every time.  He is shown as so inherently good it’s indisputable. He is the purest of the heroes.

And then on top of all that, he’s the one who gets hurt.  He’s not an unstoppable warrior, he’s just human, well practiced but fallible, who falls and is the one who has to be rescued.  And he gets rescued, by the people he showed his heart to, by the ones who are there for him as much as he was there for them.  He doesn’t fall by the wayside – he survives, and his new family is there to hold his hand while he sleeps.  He is loved.  He is lovable.  In every sense of the word – he is inherently worthy.

UGH FINN IS SO IMPORTANT MORE FINN META

zombb-8:

januariat:

guys someone talk to me about poe dameron - best pilot in the resistance, top dog, guns-blazing male protagonist - and how he was so kind. how he took an ex storm trooper at face value and with unconditional, immediate trust and even a fierce kind of joy- yeah, you go buddy! fight the darkness. i’m here to help you. i’m here to work with you. i’m not here to take control- we won’t get out of this unless we work together.

how he didn’t treat him with suspicion or macho posturing despite the fact that he’s a top tier pilot and has probably been at war with people like FN 2187 for years. how the first thing he does once they’re out of immediate danger is give him a name, treating him like a person worthy of respect and not like another faceless white mask. how he is patient with a panicking Finn even under the incredible stress of a life or death situation, ensuring he knows what to do and being endlessly positive and encouraging instead of berating him when he falls short.

how he gets out of his jet at the end of the big firefight and sees BB8 and his whole face just lights up. how he unselfconsciously runs to BB8 like a kid, automatically lowering himself to BB8′s level.

how he doesn’t need to be the spotlight, the center of attention. when they gather around the hologram to strategize, star pilot and battle veteran poe dameron shuts up and listens.

how he never has a Trek-reboot Jim Kirk-style playboy sequence, no endless string of girls. not even a hint, and you know they could have stuck it in there if they wanted to. how we never see him treat another being, human or otherwise, with anything less than respect, optimism and good nature. i’m just. i mean. do you realize how significant this is?

you guys, if poe dameron is the future of male protagonists in big action movies, sign me the fuck up.

I WAS ALREADY IN LOVE WITH HIM I DIDN’T NEED THIS POST TO REMIND ME
