Gisella Perl was forced to work as a doctor in Auschwitz concentration camp during the holocaust.

She was ordered to report ever pregnant women do the physician Dr. Josef Mengele, who would then use the women for cruel experiments (e.g. vivisections) before killing them.

She saved hundreds of women by performing abortions on them before their pregnancy was discovered, without having access to basic medical supplies. She became known as the “Angel of Auschwitz”.

After being rescued from Bergen-Belsen concentration camp she tried to commit suicide, but survived, recovered and kept working as a gynecologist, delivering more than 3000 babies.

I want to nail this to the forehead of every anti-abortionist who uses the word “Holocaust” when talking about legal abortions.

Martin Luther King's Hate Mail Eerily Resembles Criticism of the Black Lives Matter Movement

People who point out systematic injustice are not directly attacking me.
People who point out systematic injustice are not directly attacking me.

Martin Luther King's Hate Mail Eerily Resembles Criticism of the Black Lives Matter Movement:

alwaysbewoke:

“What about the violence by blacks in these cities? What is this Black Power business? If it is a threat to Whites– why should Whites not retaliate? Why should Whites hire Blacks?”

“Hang your head in shame. You are responsible for all of these riots and havoc in this country today.”

“The hatred between the race is now at an all time peak and will get worse as the niggers continue to beat, rape and murder white women and girls. A former friend of the negro, now a nigger hater”

“You don’t point out any FAULTS at all of your own people, just the whites.”

“How can you be a minster and have such hatred in your heart for the ‘white’-race and the Nation in general? Do return that ‘Nobel-peace-prize’ that we bestowed upon you, (as a great honor) so we can give it to some one who really deserves it.”

“Your own people..one day soon, I hope, will find out what you really are. It certainly must take unmititgated gall to ask the public, particularly “WHITEY” for funds to keep you and your ilk rolling along in the manner to which you have become to visibly accustomed. Your false image is beginning to catch up with your as well as others. I believe and contribute to any cause for advancing human dignity. With the best of bad luck to you, I am, Whitey”

“It would be well if every American Negro compared his position and opportunity with that of his race in other countries. He would find that in none does the Negro have the advantages the United States gives him. As justified as may be many of the demands Negroes make, they are not the only matter of importance in the world.”

People are being mean to Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder about those poisoned kids in Flint

by rss@dailykos.com (Vann R Newkirk II)
ThePrettiestOne

He's right though, rather than confronting him or his family in public spaces to heckle him, we need to be working together to solve the problem in Flint, and the other problems we're having in the state.

IMPEACH THE FUCKER.

Apparently Rick Snyder is upset that people dare to heckle him in public places about the state’s negligence in and disastrous response (or lack thereof) to Flint’s lead crisis, which may have exposed thousands to a lifetime’s worth of lead problems. CBS Detroit reports:

The governor told WWJ Newsradio 950’s Charlie Langton he was confronted by hecklers on more than one occasion — once, while dining in a restaurant in Ann Arbor. People are blaming him for what happened in Flint.

“I mean, I did have my meal, I didn’t just leave,” Synder said. “But, yeah, I was heckled and other things like that have been going on for some time now….And from a personal perspective, I’ve had things aimed even at my family.”

Ann Arbor resident Laura Tanner told The Ann Arbor News that she and a friend gave Snyder an earful at the Old Town Tavern. She said she yelled “How was your water? Was it clean?”

“That’s really unfortunate,” Snyder said, “and that’s where I wish all this energy would be going into helping solve the problem and help the people of Flint.”

Snyder said when those like filmmaker Michael Moore say they want to see him resign, prosecuted or worse, it’s hard on him.

“It makes you feel terrible, Charlie; it doesn’t help. But I am going to stay focused on the problem,” Snyder said.

What does the governor expect? Roses to be thrown at his feet for trying all he can? There is ample evidence from emails and other sources that his administration contributed to the decisions that led to Flint switching to the Flint River source, and then in downplaying or even actively mocking citizen fears about the polluted water they were drinking. It is ironic that Snyder now wishes that all of the energy from angry citizens would go into helping Flint when it was foot-dragging and an active campaign by his employees to minimize evidence of lead. The political will has only seemingly caught up with the will of citizens once national coverage led to calls for Snyder to resign.

Laura Tanner and her friend made the most salient point of all. Ann Arbor—where the Governor resides—doesn’t have to worry about clean water. Not only is it lead-free, it comes from a pristine water source and doesn’t have the kinds of odors, colors, or general nastiness involved with what state officials kept pressing Flint residents to shut up and drink. For better or for worse, Snyder represents the state government, especially the actions by executive branch agencies. Maybe he should try eating to-go next time if he doesn’t want to be criticized in public?

old school hate mail

Imagine how pissed you have to be to engrave a rock

Ok but there was this guy called Ea-nasir who was a total crook and would actually cheat people ought of good copper and sell them shit instead.
The amount of correspondences complaining to and about this guy are HILARIOUS.

Are you telling me we know about a specific guy who lived 5000 years ago, by name, because he was a huge asshole

More like 4000 years ago but yes. Ea-nasir and his dodgy business deals.

And we haven’t even touched on the true hilarity of the situation yet. Consider two additional facts:

  • He wasn’t just into copper trading. There are letters complaining about Ea-nasir’s business practices with respect to everything from kitchenwares to real estate speculation to second-hand clothing. The guy was everywhere.
  • The majority of the surviving correspondences regarding Ea-nasir were recovered from one particular room in a building that is believed to have been Ea-nasir’s own house.

Like, these are clay tablets. They’re bulky, fragile, and difficult to store. They typically weren’t kept long-term unless they contained financial records or other vital information (which is why we have huge reams of financial data about ancient Babylon in spite of how little we know about the actual culture: most of the surviving tablets are commercial inventories, bills of sale, etc.).

But this guy, this Ea-nasir, he kept all of his angry letters - hundreds of them - and meticulously filed and preserved them in a dedicated room in his house. What kind of guy does that?

[ source ]

every time this post comes across my dash (which is often) it has even more cool info attached to it

Here, by the way, is Leo Oppenheimer’s translation of the tablet at the top.

Tell Ea-nasir: Nanni sends the following message:

When you came, you said to me as follows : “I will give Gimil-Sin (when he comes) fine quality copper ingots.” You left then but you did not do what you promised me. You put ingots which were not good before my messenger (Sit-Sin) and said: “If you want to take them, take them; if you do not want to take them, go away!”

What do you take me for, that you treat somebody like me with such contempt? I have sent as messengers gentlemen like ourselves to collect the bag with my money (deposited with you) but you have treated me with contempt by sending them back to me empty-handed several times, and that through enemy territory. Is there anyone among the merchants who trade with Telmun who has treated me in this way? You alone treat my messenger with contempt! On account of that one (trifling) mina of silver which I owe(?) you, you feel free to speak in such a way, while I have given to the palace on your behalf 1,080 pounds of copper, and umi-abum has likewise given 1,080 pounds of copper, apart from what we both have had written on a sealed tablet to be kept in the temple of Samas.

How have you treated me for that copper? You have withheld my money bag from me in enemy territory; it is now up to you to restore (my money) to me in full.

Take cognizance that (from now on) I will not accept here any copper from you that is not of fine quality. I shall (from now on) select and take the ingots individually in my own yard, and I shall exercise against you my right of rejection because you have treated me with contempt.

The more things change, the more they stay the same…

Plumbers union members from across the country install water filters in Flint

by rss@dailykos.com (Vann R Newkirk II)

As governments still bumble in the response to the Flint water crisis, in which potentially thousands of residents of Flint, Michigan, were exposed to lead after a switch to the Flint River as a drinking water source, help is coming from some unlikely sources. ThinkProgress reports that plumbers from across the country came together this weekend to install filters and new faucets in Flint homes for free:

On Saturday, 300 plumbers from unions across the country descended on Flint to install new faucets and water filters for free.

Many Flint residents needed new faucets because their existing faucets were so old they could not accommodate water filters provided by the state.

The effort was coordinated by the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry, known as the United Association. The fixtures were donated by the Plumbing Manufacturers International.

As ThinkProgress notes, this step is but one of many that needs to be taken. Filters alone can’t protect people from lead exposure, as some homes tested for levels 25 times that of the maximum filtration ability of faucet filters. However, this provides some optimism for a way forward: as the state government whose negligence led to the crisis continues to form committees and wrangle for more funding, local heroes, activists, nonprofits, and citizens across the country are pitching in to take the infrastructure steps to make Flint drinking water safe again.

My pledge for Black History Month

I already put this out on Twitter, but for here, too:

  • For the month of February, I solemnly promise that all TV, movies, and books that I consume will have at least one main black character.

  • Not sidekick, not recurring character, not background character. MAIN character.  On the main title.  In every episode #consumeblackmedia

  • I want to challenge my fellow nerds, especially white nerds, especially white women nerds, to only #consumeblackmedia for this month.

  • Your ongoings will still be there in March.  Those to be read books will still be on the pile.  Black main characters.  Black creators.

  • I have a feeling this is going to be hard, and that’s a crying shame.  I have a feeling I’m also going to find some new, awesome stuff.

  • Be aware.  Be conscious.  #consumeblackmedia for Black History Month.

  • I’m going to make sure to document what I am reading and watching, and I’d love it if other folks did the same.

  • And if there’s a better hashtag than #consumeblackmedia I’m all for it.

  • And I won’t forget: I want to focus on black creators too, if I can.  Black authors, black artists, black musicians, black-owned media.

If anyone has any suggestions, hit me up.  I know I’ve got stuff on the to be read pile, and my ST:TOS re-watch is LONG overdue, but I am up for anything.

Sometimes people use “respect” to mean “treating someone like a person” and sometimes they use “respect” to mean “treating someone like an authority”

and sometimes people who are used to being treated like an authority say “if you won’t respect me I won’t respect you” and they mean “if you won’t treat me like an authority I won’t treat you like a person”

and they think they’re being fair but they aren’t, and it’s not okay.

This is so well put I am stunned

Tips for respecting children’s spaces, competence, and general existence from a preschool teacher:

  • Listen to them
  • Ask them, “Do you want to say hi to your auntie/grandma/cousin/dad/whatevs” (Hint: they will be honest and this can result in a simple hello or a hug or a silly “No!” depending how comfortable they feel)
  • If they don’t want to hug you realize it’s not that they don’t love you it’s that they don’t know you/don’t feel like hugging.
  • Just like every other person who doesn’t want a hug
  • In the event that you need to move a child EXPLAIN TO THEM WHY and WHAT YOU ARE DOING don’t just move them like PROPS they are CHILDREN and NOT props
  • For instance, “I’m going to move your chair over so we have room at the table for everyone!”
  • Or  “Sorry there was a person running by I didn’t want you to get smushed so I had to pick you up!”
  • Remind them that they are people not objects using your actions
  • Asking children to do something they don’t want to do but NEED to do often doesn’t work, instead give them a choice, “Do you want to eat bok choy or yams?”
  • NOT “Do you want to eat your vegetables?”
  • “Do you want to brush your teeth in the bathroom or the kitchen”
  • This exercises their ever-growing free will and is especially useful during TERRIFIC TWOS okay TERRIFIC not TERRIBLE they’re TERRIFIC
  • Children will copy you, MODEL FOR THEM
  • Being over enthusiastic IS beneficial for them understanding emotional and social competence
  • “I hung this picture uneven, that makes me sad, hmmm! Oh goodie, I found my mistake! Now I can fix it, I’ll feel much happier when I’ve fixed it!”
  • You think it sounds ridic yeah well hearing you do that children around you just learned to not get so discouraged by their mistakes and that it’s okay to try to fix them
  • ADULTS CAN APOLOGIZE TO CHILDREN
  • You make a mistake that hurt a child, APOLOGIZE and show them how to do it properly and genuinely
  • Realize children are fully competent and are capable of making meanings from YOUR implications about race, culture, gender, ability, sexuality, EVERYTHING
  • Many three year olds know what the N-word is, what gay means, can identify which children are visably disabled, and YOUR REACTIONS of their answers of questions about their culture
  • Children like to talk about themselves so do not ever dismiss what they say about themselves as illegitimate just because it sounds silly or unlikely sometimes it’s true
  • Stop talking about how you hate children, just leave them alone if you don’t understand them you don’t have to be complete jerks to PEOPLE you’ve never met
  • I will post more and if people have question PLS ASK ME I WOULD LOVE TO ANSWER WHAT I KNOW

This is spot on. 10 years as a nanny and this is pretty much what I did. Also guiding them with questions to help develop critical thinking skills:

  • “Yes, it does look like fun to climb on top of your cozy coupe, but what do you think might happen if you climb on something with wheels?”
  • “And if it rolls away with you on top, where do you think you might go?”
  • “What do you think it would feel like to fall off and hit your head?”

It might sound patronizing but children’s prefrontal cortices develop last, and this portion of the brain allows us to think critically, plan, and exercise self control. You can’t expect them to understand the consequences of their actions right off the bat, but using questions helps them to move through, step by step, potential outcomes of their behaviors.

Oh, and praising good behaviors instead of just applying labels:

  • In addition to “you’re a great climber!” try “Great job figuring out how to climb to the top of that wall! You saw that your arm couldn’t reach the next handhold so you used your legs to push yourself up instead!”
  • or in addition to “you’re a talented singer” try “I’m proud of how hard you’ve worked to learn that song. You stuck with it and kept trying until you memorized it and could do it exactly how you wanted.”

Don’t just reward kids for doing well, teach kids how to do well by praising the behaviors that worked for them.

I love this.

I need to show this to my parents (but I won’t). I was expected to show responsibility for my actions as a toddler. (Also, that fall really, really hurts. I have no clue how much damage a faceplant on a stone floor can do, because instead of an er trip, I got two black eyes and, “Shouldn’t'a done that!”)

Ten hard truths about the Flint water atrocity

mostlysignssomeportents:

Years before the complaints from Flint’s citizenry about their water provoked action from the state, Governor Rick Snyder spent $440,000 to supply better water to the GM factory, where the new water supply was corroding the car parts on the assembly line.

The Flint disaster was caused because the governor’s office decided to save $100/day on additives that would have prevented the corrosion in the lead pipes.

While the crisis was unfolding – and even today – the Pentagon was given a green light to conduct unannounced military exercises in Flint, literally bombing abandoned houses and conducting live-fire house-to-house fighting exercises next door to the already brutalized, already neglected population of Flint.

These three damning facts, and seven more, are presented by Michael Moore, who has been incandescent about the unfolding horror in his hometown.

https://boingboing.net/2016/01/31/ten-hard-truths-about-the-flin.html

Rick Snyder and every single person who allowed this to happen in Flint deserve to be in jail.

But don’t give me fucking crumbs and expect me to be satisfied. Everyone wants to eat a full meal at the goddamn table, you feel?

Dissecting a fat hating meme

ThePrettiestOne

Also, reminder: Fat-shaming is positively correlated with obesity. The more fat-shaming a person has to deal with, the more likely they are to become obese. If you really want to help fat people, you'd keep your negative opinions to yourself.

WHICH. IS. WHAT. DECENT. PEOPLE. DO. IN. THE. FIRST. PLACE.

sleepydumpling:

ok2befat:

joebelladonna:

ok2befat:

CN for fat hate & a photos of human organs.

.

.

.

So, you may have seen the below- some of the text is chopped off- it also includes language about fat “strangling” organs (pretty sure, not a thing).

Where does this photo of a heart come from? It’s from a slide show about heart transplants, photo number 9.

The photo’s original text is below.

This is a healthy heart, being transplanted INTO a person who needs a heart transplant.

It is NOT a heart taken out of a dead fat person who died of Fat Heart, which is not a thing.

Fat haters lie. They do it all the time.

Never forget that.

This is the stupidest thing I’ve read in a long time.

Sure, “fat heart” isnt a thing but being obese does cause heart problems as the heart has to grow in order to pump more blood around the body which causes it to strain and struggle just for doing its job.

This is a real picture of a normal heart next to the heart of an obese person’s.

Why do people constantly want to encourage being obese despite the many health risks it carries?

Fat haters lie.

image

“Martti Tenhu, chief medical examiner in Helsinki, Finland, illustrates the differences between a normal human heart and one enlarged by alcoholism and high blood pressure. Covered in scar tissue, the enlarged organ is nearly twice the normal size. Such alcoholic cardiomyopathy weakens the heart so that it is unable to pump blood adequately.”

Alcoholic cardiomyopathy is a disease in which the chronic long-term abuse of alcohol… leads to heart failure.”

The original photo is from the National Geographic and does not mention the size of the person who had the enlarged heart.

Fat haters lie.

For a group of people who yell about science all the time, they sure do love clipping off the actual text included with the original photos and replacing it with dishonest garbage.

If you take the time to double check their sources, this is basically how it always goes.

They will say anything to advance their bigotry. Don’t listen to them.

It’s ok to be fat!

They lie, and when caught they keep on lying.

I love how just saying “it’s okay to not believe the people saying you should loathe fat bodies, fat people aren’t morally offensive” is somehow the same as ~advertising obesity~ to fat-hating people.

“Yknow I wasn’t GONNA be fat, but all this messaging telling me not to shun and taunt fat people has me convinced…time to get fat!” Like…that’s. Not how bodies work? Is it? And so what if it was?

Hey. It’s okay to be a fat person. On account of how a fat person is A PERSON. So. It’s really that simple. Making it more complex than that is a lot of unnecessary energy. Why u so mad at fat people? (Don’t answer, I don’t care)
