Me: Well, actually, my personal experience is that Microsoft and Google have done more to empower me in the workplace than the four years of college I took. Him: Wow, there's no way you came up with THAT off the top of your head. Me: ... Me (internal): 1. Oh, you're saying that that's not my actual opinion, and I must be quoting some guy I read on the internet, probably from an article some guy I know sent me. 2. And can we discuss how "on the spot" your "evil empire" comment was? 3. And thank you for intruding into this conversation in the first place.

She hung from the ceiling, a perfect, motionless sculpture of a girl in the process of becoming a fruitbat. Simon glanced up at her periodically, both checking that she was still present, and reassuring himself that the grind of the machines overhead would keep her from hearing what he had to say. It wasn’t that he was keeping secrets from her; River knew everything about her condition, sometimes more than he did. It was that she didn’t like being talked about, and he respected that.
“They weren’t trying to unlock psychic powers or anything like that, no matter what the rumors say,” he said, his voice shaking slightly. Kaylee shifted her weight from foot to foot, disturbed by that tremor in his words. Simon Tam was the best K-scientist she’d ever worked with. For him to sound scared…
“Those people, those monsters…” Simon paused to take a deep breath, relaxing a little at the taste of oil on his tongue. Enough time spent with Kaylee had turned grime into perfume. “They were trying to set up a neural bridge inside a single mind. They wanted to do away with the need for drift compatibility, and privatize the Pilots. Imagine being able to market Jaegers for domestic and commercial use, because you only needed one Pilot, and that Pilot was so doped and dependent that they could never leave you.”
“That’s horrific,” whispered Kaylee. “They…they messed up her brain tryin’ to do something as can’t be done?”
“Oh, it can be done,” said Simon grimly. “They succeeded.

Housing costs are rising faster than wages for lower-income families—a lot faster—and are taking up a greater share of income for these families than for others, a new analysis from the Pew Charitable Trusts shows:
Over the past two decades, spending on housing increased for Americans in all income tiers. In 2014, households in the lower third spent much less in absolute dollar terms (about $9,200) than those in the middle or upper thirds, whose median housing expenditures reached $11,500 and $18,000, respectively. However, the typical lower-income household spent far more on housing as a share of income (40 percent) than those in the middle (25 percent) or at the top (17 percent).
It’s not that low-income families have decided they need luxury apartments, cost be damned. They’re struggling to find a place in a housing market that’s become far more competitive:
Since the start of the housing crisis in 2007, homeownership rates have declined among households in the middle- and upper-income tiers. These decreases have affected the rental market, as former owners became renters, leading to rental vacancy rates at historical lows below 7 percent.4 The diminished supply of rental properties increased the cost of rental housing dramatically; in 2014, renters at each rung of the income ladder spent a higher share of their income on housing than they had in any year since 2004.
Food and transportation expenses have also risen, and with all households seeing a 25 percent growth in expenditures since 1996, lower-income households have ended up in the red, going from having $1,500 left after expenses in 2004 to having negative $2,300 left after expenses in 2014. And it’s no wonder, with a full-time minimum wage job not being enough to make rent affordable in any state in the country.
This may be the only adhd-like symptom I exhibit. I think the funniest example with me is typing tests. If I'm typing something business related, I can BARELY pass. If I'm typing something from a fantasy story, I go much faster.
the one adhd symtom that goes widely unknown is the “all or nothing” thing.
like if i am interested in something, i can devote my entire day for it without getting bored at all and if im not interested in it, paying attention to it even for short time is like torture
like i struggle with watching 5 minutes long video because im not that interested in it but i can watch all extended lotr movies on one sitting without getting even slightly bored (been there, done that) just because i love the lotr lore
I feel like the “makeup is oppressive” crowd and the “makeup is empowering” crowd are referring to two completely different concepts, and it would be helpful to tease them out.
I think those who claim the former are thinking of the “no-makeup makeup” that a lot of women are pressured into wearing just to look presentable. Foundation, concealer, etc. And if we’re talking about that, then I actually agree! There is nothing wrong with wearing it if you want to, but it’s fucked that anyone should be expected to change the way their skin looks just to be considered a respectable member of society. This kind of makeup is also more about adhering to a certain baseline than about expressing yourself creatively, which I imagine must be exhausting: who wants to spend half an hour in front of the mirror only to look like you haven’t done anything at all?
On the other hand, those who claim the latter are thinking of very obvious makeup. Of plummy lips and winged liner and dramatic contouring. If we’re talking about that? Then no, I don’t agree that that’s oppressive. No one spends hours bluing sparkles to their fingernails because they want to fit in with the status quo. That kind of makeup is a very deliberate artistic statement, and it’s demeaning to elide the differences between it and the baseline makeup people wear just to fit in.
