YOU’RE A GOOD GUY, BILL, AND THAT’S WHY THIS IS GOING TO BE HARD FOR ME TO SAY.
YOU KNOW HOW THINGS HAVE BEEN AROUND THE OFFICE, WITH THE BUDGET DIFFICULTIES, ALL THE CUTBACKS …
WORD CAME DOWN FROM UPSTAIRS, BILL. IT’S NOTHING PERSONAL. YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE THAT. IT’S JUST THAT WE’RE GONNA HAVE TO LET YOU GO.
I’M SORRY. YOU KNOW YOU’LL BE MISSED.
PLEASE DON’T START LOOKING AT ME LIKE THAT. IT’S NOT MY CALL. LOOK, YOU WANT ANOTHER HEINEKEN? IT’S ON ME. THE WHOLE TAB’S ON ME TONIGHT.

Shortest Attention Span Ever of the Day

Two grand masters of irreverence come together.
In the early 1990s, two titans of the artfully cynical and subversive joined forces in an extraordinary collaboration: Legendary cartoonist and album cover artist R. Crumb illustrated two short books by Charles Bukowski, Bring Me Your Love (public library) and There’s No Business (public library). Crumb’s signature underground comix aesthetic and Bukowski’s commentary on contemporary culture and the human condition by way of his familiar tropes — sex, alcohol, the drudgery of work — coalesce into the kind of fit that makes you wonder why it hadn’t happened sooner.
In 1998, a final posthumous collaboration was released under the title The Captain Is Out to Lunch and the Sailors Have Taken Over the Ship (public library) — an illustrated selection from Buk’s previously unpublished diaries, capturing a year in his life shortly before his death in 1994.

Staggering Facts, Figures and Statistics about Facebook – Infographic
While I was sleeping a few days ago a shepherd in Uzbekistan logged onto the the internet, created a Facebook account and then took a photo of his favourite sheep to become the one billionth person on the planet to join Facebook.
It most probably happened on his iPhone that had been bought online because someone told him on Twitter about a special discount deal at an online store.
We live in a world that we barely recognise from only 10 years ago that now includes mobile science fiction defying devices called smart phones and strange terms and activities such as tweets, likes and pinning.
We think nothing of starting up Skype (with over 650 million registered users) and having a video call with a friend or colleague in Iceland while sipping on a chardonnay. It is a global mind meld with multi-media telepathy.
Just last Thursday Facebook officially announced that they had passed this significant milestone. The number is sizeable and the moment is worth noting but it is the other facts and figures that accompany this social media trivia titbit, that put into perspective how much social networks have woven themselves into the fabric of our lives. These include photos downloaded, the total number of friend connections and songs downloaded.
The Other Statistics
While Flickr, Instagram, Pinterest and other photo sharing sites are significant the Facebook ecosystem makes them look like an afterthought along with the other accompanying facts.
- 219 billion photos have been uploaded onto Facebook (including that sheep photo)
- Since the Facebook “like” was introduced in 2009 (yes, it was only 3 years ago and now it is ubiquitous) we have hit that button 1.13 trillion times
- There have been 140.3 billion friend connections (no mention of how much “unfriending has ocurred)
- 17 billion location-tagged posts, including check-ins
- 62.6 billion songs have been played 22 billion times which is 210,000 years of music
- Average age of a Facebook user is 22 years
- Facebook now has 600 million mobile users
In 2008 (which is only 4 years ago) Facebook only had 100 million users. It isn’t time to relax though as there are still over 6 billion more people to sign up.

Monk’s Notes
Steve Lacy played soprano saxophone in Thelonious Monk’s quintet for 16 weeks in 1960. He took down the pianist’s advice in a spiral notebook:
“Monk’s tunes were ideal and difficult, and interesting, intriguing, and satisfying,” Lacy remembered later. “I started and I’ve never stopped looking into his music.”

The Silence of Dogs in Cars
No doubt I have some die-hard dog lovers reading this blog, along with myself. I’m not sure how these photographs will go down. I can only admit that I’ve left my dog in the car for short periods of time when popping into a shop to do an errand, because I assumed they wouldn’t allow animals. But most of the time, I assumed this because I was in a rush. I could have brought my dog with me. I really could have.
These cinematic images are by Martin Usborne for his new book, The Silence of Dogs in Cars. Usborne, an editorial and fine-art photographer based in London, set up each scene with dogs he met through friends or while walking his own dog, a miniature schnauzer
A word from the photographer Martin Usborne:
I was once left in a car at a young age.
I don’t know when or where or for how long, possibly at the age of four, perhaps outside Tesco’s, probably for fifteen minutes only. The details don’t matter. The point is that I wondered if anyone would come back. It seems trivial now but in a child’s mind it is possible to be alone forever.
Around the same age I began to feel a deep affinity with animals – in particular their plight at the hands of humans. I remember watching TV and seeing footage of a dog being [mistreated]. What appalled me most was that the dog could not speak back. It’s muteness terrified me.
I should say that I was a well-loved child and never abandoned and yet it is clear that both these experiences arose from the same place deep inside me: a fear of being alone and unheard. Perhaps this is a fear we all share at some level, I am not sure.
The images in this series explore that feeling, both in relation to myself and to animals in general. The camera is the perfect tool for capturing a sense of silence and longing: the shutter freezes the subject for ever and two layers of glass are placed between the viewer and the viewed: the glass of the lens, the glass of the picture frame and, in this instance, the glass of the car window further isolates the animal. The dog is truly trapped.
This is sort of a metaphor for how we silence animals in our lives
When I started this project I knew the photos would be dark. What I didn’t expect was to see so many subtle reactions by the dogs: some sad, some expectant, some angry, some dejected. It was as if upon opening up a box of grey-coloured pencils I was surprised to see so many shades inside.
I hope that these pictures are engaging and perhaps a little amusing. I want to show that there is life in the dark places within us.
I will stop writing now and you can stop reading. Words can only get us so far. After all, we are all animals.
Martin, Sept 2010
I hope this encourages us all to think twice about leaving our animals in cars and how we treat them in general…
