Valerii Danevych is a carpenter from Kiev, Ukraine. He comes from a family of cabinet-makers that have been crafting wood for generations. A highly skilled artisan, Danevych did not feel challenged anymore and began to explore how to build mechanical/moving items completely out of wood.

It wasn’t until 2005 that Valerii began to research watchmaking. Three years later, he completed his first functional wooden pocket watch. Since then he has completed a series of functional wooden wristwatches, wall clocks (with pendulums) and table clocks. All are made entirely out of wood with the sole exception of a metal spring needed to propel movement.

Tanbo art is a Japanese creation in which people plant various types and colors of rice and ‘grow’ a giant picture in rice paddy fields.

It all started back in 1993 when the village of Inakadate, about 600 miles north of Tokyo, was looking to create a project that would ‘revitalize’ the local economy. They needed a way to attract tourists and Japanese rice field art was born.

 

 

 

 

Every April, the villagers meet and decide what to plant for the year. Prior to planting, farmers sketch out the designs on computers to figure out where and how to plant the rice. In 2007, over 700 people helped to plant the design. In Inakadate, the fields used are approximately 15,000 square meters (3.7 acres). The best time to view the rice field artworks is in September. Four different types of heirloom and modern strains of rice are planted and cultivated to create the paddy art. For example, purple and yellow-leafed kodaimai rice is used along with local green-leafed tsugaru roman varieties. [Source]

 

 

 

 

Following Inakadate’s example, other villages such as Yonezawa in Yamagata prefecture, have started to create their own tanbo art. The growing attention and competition has made competing villages go bigger each year, also incorporating more contemporary figures in Japanese culture like Naruto and Mazinger Z. In this perfectly framed photograph by Sam Javanrouh, we look skyward from a beautiful courtyard in Siena, Italy. Sam took great care in locating the absolute center of the courtyard and must have been laying on the ground (or had a tripod that could look straight up), as the angle is perfect!

Siena is a city in Tuscany and its historic centre has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The historic centre is one of the nation’s most visited tourist attractions. Jake Evill wants to use 3D printing to revolutionize the way we treat fractured bones. Instead of the typical bulky, itchy and smelly plaster or fiberglass casts we use today; Evill is proposing a custom, 3D-printed, lightweight, ventilated, thin, recyclable and washable design.

Jake is a recent graduate from the Architecture and design faculty at the Victoria University of Wellington. He majored in media design with a minor in industrial design.

In a recent interview with Dezeen, Jake explains:

“At the moment, 3D printing of the cast takes around three hours whereas a plaster cast is three to nine minutes, but requires 24-72 hours to be fully set. With the improvement of 3D printing, we could see a big reduction in the time it takes to print in the future.”

 

The project was done in collaboration with the University’s orthopedic department. He is currently seeking funding to further develop this exciting concept. For more be sure to visit Jake’s official website below.

In this perfectly timed photograph by Redditor AJ192, we see lightning strike at the exact moment a firework lights up the night sky.

The photograph was taken at a firework show at the Rio Rancho High School in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, United States. The image was captured last night during the fourth of July celebrations (Independence Day in the United States). It was posted to Reddit earlier today and reached the top spot on the front page for a period of time.

The Sifter has previously featured a photo that captured both lightning and fireworks at the same time, but it was not perfectly aligned like the image above.

 

 

 

 

 

Joongwon (Charles) Jeong is a hyperrealist painter from South Korea. A freelance artist and illustrator, Jeong studied Visual Communication Design at the Hongik University of Fine Art & Design in Seoul.

Jeong’s preferred medium is acrylic on canvas which he says is so versatile and its effect ranges from “thick, oil-like texture to watercolour splashes.”

With solo and group exhibitions in Seoul, Jeong is also quite popular online, especially on deviantART and Facebook where you can see much more of his incredible work.

Jeong lists his favourite artists as: Michleangelo, Titian, Holbein, Norman Rockwell, Sebastian Kruger, James Gurney, and Drew Struzan. Internationally known for his captivating, three-dimensional visual illusions, Argentine artist Leandro Erlich (previously featured here and here) has been commissioned by the Barbican to create a new installation in Dalston.

Resembling a theatre set, the detailed facade of a Victorian terraced house – recalling those that once stood on the street – lies horizontally on the ground with mirrors positioned overhead. The reflections of visitors give the impression they are standing on, suspended from, or scaling the building vertically.

Sited on a vacant lot on Ashwin Street, Erlich will design and decorate the façade to resemble the houses that previously stood on the block. Erlich’s installation will be accompanied by talks, workshops and live performances, exploring themes related to the project, including architectural history, urbanism, and perception, which will be developed in collaboration with local organisations (more info here).

 

Leandro Erlich’s Dalston House runs from June 26, 2013 – August 4, 2013 at 1-7 Ashwin STreet, Dalston, E8 3DL. Admission is free and the installation is open: Mon to Wed 11am – 6pm; Thu and Fri 11am – 8pm; Sat and Sun 10am – 8pm.

In this macro photo, we see a ‘micro’ origami crane folded using the tip of an X-Acto knife. The crane measures: 6mm square paper, 4mm wingspan, 3mm body; and was done by animator Joaquin Baldwin and posted to Reddit yesterday.

The paper used was a super fine piece called colored Gampi paper. He says it took him about 30 minutes. You can find additional shots of the miniature crane here.

Sabine Pearlman is an Austrian photographer currently based in Los Angeles, California. Educated at the Pratt institute, the Otis College of Art and Design and Santa Monica College, Pearlman’s series entitled, Ammo, has been sweeping across the Internet. On her website, Pearlman states:

“This series of ammunition cross-sections was photographed inside a WWII bunker in Switzerland in October of 2012. The entire series consists of 900 specimen. I was originally intrigued by the ambiguous nature of the subject matter. The cross-sections reveal a hidden complexity and beauty of form, which stands in vast contrast to the destructive purpose of the object. It’s a representation of the evil and the beautiful, a reflection of the human condition.”

 

In an interview with Imaging Resource, Pearlman says the ammunition was cut by a munitions specialist, who created a technique to defuse the rounds and cut them in half.

At the bottom of the post, you will also see a chart that attempts to identify the ammunition. It was put together by D_P_T on Reddit and was based on information culled from this thread on Reddit.

There are tons of fascinating details about pit stops and the pit crew on Wikipedia. For example:

In Formula One, mid-race refuelling has been banned since 2010, and cars make pit stops with the primary purpose of changing tires. Teams sometimes also make adjustments to the front and rear wings and perform minor repairs, most commonly replacing the nose and front wing assembly.
 
Pit strategies generally call for between two and four scheduled stops, depending on the circuit. The drives between pit stops are commonly known as ‘stints’.
 
When the car is approximately one lap away from making its stop, the team’s pit crew will set up fresh tires and all needed pit equipment. Because of the overhead pneumatic rig, the team may have all pit mechanics in position prior to the car’s arrival, with the exception of the rear jack man.
 
Formula One rules limit teams to a single pit crew for the mandatory two cars entered. Therefore, teams must stagger their pit schedules so that only one of their two cars is in the pits at any given time. [Source]

A beautiful capture of a beautiful city, San Francisco encompasses a land area of about 46.9 square miles (121 km2). It has a density of about 17,620 people per square mile (6,803 people per km2), making it the most densely settled large city (population greater than 200,000) in the state of California and the second-most densely populated major city in the United States after New York City.

Isaac Cordal is a Spanish artist that has been working on his own projects since 1999. His ongoing series entitled Cement Eclipses began in art school in 2002 but he didn’t start placing them on the streets until 2006, with his first piece laid in the city of Vigo, Spain.

Cordal makes the tiny sculptures in his apartment/home studio. He has placed them in major cities all around Europe including: London, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Milan, Berlin and Brussels. “Small interventions in big cities,” is how Cordal characterized Cement Eclipses.

In a 2012 interview with Agenda Magazine, Cordal explains:

“Our gaze is so strongly focused on beautiful, large things, whereas the city also contains zones that have the potential to be beautiful, or that were really beautiful in the past, which we overlook. I find it really interesting to go looking for those very places and via small-scale interventions to develop a different way of looking at our behaviour as a social mass.”

A bait ball, or baitball, occurs when small fish swarm in a tightly packed spherical formation about a common centre. It is a last-ditch defensive measure adopted by small schooling fish when they are threatened by predators. Small schooling fish are eaten by many types of predators, and for this reason they are called bait fish or forage fish.

In the photograph above we see a bait ball of bigeye scad fish off the coast of Kona, Hawaii. Photographer Steve Dunleavy explains:

“Big Eyed Scad feed offshore on plankton at night, and tend to congregate in huge schools in shallow water for protection during the day. The baitball can be massive – as big as a house, hundreds of thousands of fish. If the water is clear and you can find the school, these are a blast to shoot. I’ve run out of air and camera battery more than once getting pictures like this.
 
This image was from last year [2010], shortly before some local fishermen moved in and constructed a huge pen to fish the school out. They gave up without catching the scad, but stressed them enough so they disappeared. A year later, I’ve heard reports that small schools are starting to reform at different locations.”
