Green Party Booted From Wisconsin Presidential Ballot

by Joe Jervis

The Wisconsin State Journal reports:

The Wisconsin Supreme Court on Monday denied the Green Party’s presidential and vice-presidential candidates ballot access, clearing the way for municipal clerks to begin sending absentee ballots to voters.

Less than a week ago, the high court abruptly halted the delivery of absentee ballots across the state in order to consider granting Green Party presidential candidate Howie Hawkins and vice presidential candidate Angela Walker ballot access after the Elections Commission denied them.

In the 4-3 unsigned decision, the court ruled it was simply too late into election season to grant any relief. Conservative-backed justices Patience Roggensack, Annette Ziegler and Rebecca Bradley dissented.

“Forced” To Lick Her Nipples

by Bacchus

If a woman wants the pleasure she wants and has no patience at all for putting up with the nonsense of fuckboys, one increasingly-popular strategy is what I shall call “direct supervision”:

man forced to lick leather-clad dominatrix with pierced nipples

This femdom photo was hashtagged as vintage by Mr. Underheel on Twitter, whose image curation marks him in my estimation as something of an expert. When, as here, none of my usual image provenancing methods turn up any deeper information, I generally consider that to indicate an older origin also, harking back at least to the print-publication era. However, in this case there’s just something about the overall composition that strikes me as modern. I want to say “the style of the nipple piercings” but I’m not an expert in those and I’m sure if I said that somebody would land on my head with Victorian-era examples. So let’s just leave this with the notation that my instincts are twitching with a reservation that it might not be as “vintage” as it seems.

Arsène Wenger praises Arsenal mental strength in battling draw with City

by David Hytner at the Emirates Stadium
• Arsenal twice fight back to earn 2-2 draw with Manchester City
• ‘We showed great mental resources. We were twice down and came back’

Arsène Wenger watched his Arsenal team squeeze to a nervy 2-2 draw with Manchester City and hoped that it could serve as a springboard to greater stability and a successful push for a top‑four finish.

Arsenal had entered on a run of four defeats in five Premier League games – the worst sequence of Wenger’s long career – and to the now familiar backdrop of angst and uncertainly over his future beyond the end of the season.

Links: Competing views on the Brooklyn-Queens streetcar

by Benjamin Kabak

I’m heading out of town to take a few extra days off around the Presidents’ Day Weekend so content will be light over the next few days. I’ll post the service advisories on Friday night, but unless big news breaks, I don’t plan on publishing anything else. That doesn’t mean I’ll leave you with nothing though. We’ll always have streetcar takes.

For your consideration, Yonah Freemark offers up a wary view of the Brooklyn-Queens Connector proposal while Sam Schwartz defends his work. Schwartz, who led the team studying the transit options, explains how his group determined a subway was too costly and bus too slow and insufficient for the area’s transit needs. Freemark, on the other hand, wants to see truly dedicated rights-of-way, free transfers and better connections between a streetcar and other transit modes, and, most importantly, zoning that eliminates parking requirements and allows for greater density along the streetcar route. The problem with hugging the waterfront is, of course, that we can’t build for height in the ocean.

I’m in the process of learning more about the nuts and bolts of Schwartz’s proposal, and while many think this plan is dead on arrival, from what I’ve heard, it seems to have a better chance than most at becoming a New York reality. (Unfortunately, the same may be said for the fatally flawed Laguardia AirTrain, but more on that next week.) For now, enjoy the weekend reading. If anything, the streetcar proposal has thrust the option of light rail in New York City back in the public mind, and hopefully, something good can come of it, whether it’s the Brooklyn-Queens Connector or a better route through a more transit-starved area.

Dustin Lance Black Reveals His Creative Process In Inspiring New Mini-Doc

by Matthew Tharrett

DLB8The “Academy Originals” series on YouTube steps into the mind of Milk and J. Edgar screenwriter Dustin Lance Black this week, chronicling his extensive creative process that precedes the actual making of a film.

If you thought DLB drew inspiration exclusively from his Olympic dreamboat boyfriend, think again. His inspiration comes from the research he does — just watching him ogle over a giant storyboarding table with a deck of “lost scenes” in one hand and flash cards of a personal interview in another is an emotional journey on its own.

It’s refreshing to hear DLB speak freely about his work, especially since he’s become a man more widely recognized as “Tom Daley’s boyfriend” in the last six months. Check out his inspiring process in the latest “Creative Spark” mini-doc and see other photos below:

Berlin Maps: Rents, Crime, Transport and Planning

by andberlin

Over the last couple of weeks a number of posts have popped up in my Social Media timelines with links to maps of Berlin.  The maps provide valuable insights into the history and development of the city and/or useful tools for residents and future residents alike.

Interactive Map of Berlin Rents and Affordability

Published by Berliner Morgenpost under the title Neuvermietungen: Wo Sie sich Berlin leisten können, and based on the GSW Wohnmarkt-Report 2014, this interactive map allows you to determine where you can afford to live in Berlin.

The data is based on properties offered for rental in the first three quarters of 2013.

A slider allows you to select a monthly net income for your household and by selecting the number of rooms required (bedrooms +1), the map will display rental data for each of the areas marked on the map.

The map is colour-coded to show the percentage of household income required to rent the given properties (typical area in m2).

There is also a very handy comparison with prices in 2008 for those interested in the development of the property rental market in Berlin.

The Berlin Atlas of Crime is an interactive map created by Tobias Burri and Lars Bullmann that visualises criminal activity in Berlin for 2010 and 2011, with data taken from the August 2012 report of the same name, as produced by the police of the Federal State of Berlin.

The dropdown menu allows the user to switch between overall crime statistics or specific categories of crime: Robbery, Mugging, Arson etc. to create a Heatmap.  Clicking on each district of the map displays more detailed crime figures.

You can find out more about the data represented in the ‘About the Project’ section of the website.

Figure-ground Diagram (Schwarzplan) of Berlin (2010)

Berlin Schwarzplan (Figure-ground Diagram) 2010

Source: Shlur

Schwarzplan is the German term for a Figure-ground Diagram, an architectural map, which is described by Gareth Davies on Shlur:

Mostly used by city planners, architects and urban designers, the idea of a figure-ground diagram goes back to 18th Century Rome, when Giambattista Nolli created a detailed map of 12 copper plates using the same basic principle. White symbolises unbuilt space, such as roads, parks and squares, and black indicates built space in terms of the ground-plan of the buildings. The result is something both abstract and filled with detail, a kind of practical Yin and Yang of the city. Figure-ground diagrams help to see the ratio of built space to that of empty space, enabling city planners to envisage areas that are conducive to a good communities, have a human scale and don’t lead to a disconnectedness between buildings and the further urban fabric.

The article on Shlur has further maps of Berlin that show it’s historical development.  The comparison of the maps from 1940 and 1953 show the shocking extent of the destruction of Berlin in World War II.

Thai protests continue despite PM's concessions

Opponents reject call for general election and want an unelected 'people's council', raising fears for democracy

Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra tearfully pleaded for anti-government demonstrators to clear the streets on Tuesday and support a snap election, but defiant protest leaders called for her to step down within 24 hours.

After weeks of sometimes violent street rallies, protesters rejected her call on Monday for a general election and said she should be replaced by an unelected "people's council", a proposal that has stoked concern that south-east Asia's second-biggest economy may abandon democracy.

Yingluck said she would continue her duties as caretaker prime minister until the election, which is set for 2 February.

On Tuesday she held a cabinet meeting at an army club.

"Now that the government has dissolved parliament, I ask that you stop protesting and that all sides work towards elections," Yingluck told reporters as she went in.

"I have backed down to the point where I don't know how to back down any further."

Tears briefly formed in her eyes as she spoke, before she quickly composed herself.

Yingluck, a 46-year-old former businesswoman, had no political experience before entering a 2011 election that she won by a landslide, largely on the back of rural support.

The protesters – a diverse collection aligned with Bangkok's royalist elite – want to oust Yingluck and eradicate the influence of her brother, former premier Thaksin Shinawatra, who was toppled by the military in 2006 and has chosen to live in exile rather than serve a jail term for abuse of power.

This is the latest flare-up in almost a decade of rivalry between forces aligned with the Bangkok-based establishment and those who support Thaksin, a former telecommunications tycoon who won huge support in the countryside with policies designed to help the poor.

An estimated 3,000 protesters camped out overnight around Government House, where Yingluck has her office, a day after 160,000 protesters converged peacefully on the complex.

They made no attempt to get into the grounds, which appeared to be defended by unarmed police and soldiers. The crowd could swell again on Tuesday, a public holiday in Thailand for Constitution Day.

Yingluck's Puea Thai party enjoys widespread support in the populous north and northeast, Thailand's poorest regions. She will be its candidate for prime minister if the party wins in February, a party official said.

In contrast, the protesters are drawn from Bangkok's upper and middle classes, including civil servants and prominent business families, along with people from the south where the opposition Democrat party has long held sway.

The spark for this latest unrest was a government bid last month to force through an amnesty bill that would have expunged Thaksin's conviction, allowing him to return home a free man. He is widely seen as the power behind his sister's government.

Protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban's overriding aim is to get rid of what he calls the "Thaksin regime" - the extended family's influence on politics but also the people placed in senior positions in state agencies and the police who are believed to answer to him.

The protest movement, he told supporters on Monday, "cannot allow political tyranny, under the guise of majority rule, and crony, monopolistic capitalism to collude to use parliamentary dictatorship to betray the trust of the people".

In a late-night speech to supporters at Government House on Monday, Suthep gave Yingluck 24 hours to step down.

"We want the government to step aside and create a power vacuum in order to create a people's council," said Akanat Promphan, a spokesman for the protest group. Suthep has said this council would be made up of appointed "good people".

Lawmakers from the Democrat party resigned from parliament on Sunday, saying they could not work with Yingluck.

Its leaders have refused to say whether they would participate in the election. Some have marched with Suthep, including Abhisit Vejjajiva, prime minister until the 2011 election, with Suthep as one of his deputies.

Suthep's campaign opens up the prospect of a minority of Thailand's 66 million people dislodging a democratically elected leader, this time without help from the military, unlike when Thaksin was deposed.

The politically powerful army, which has staged or attempted 18 coups in the past 80 years, has said it does not want to get involved, although it has tried to mediate.
