Hollywood Studios’ Demand For Free AI Replicas Sparks Actor Strike

by Paulo Montenegro

In a startling revelation made during the press conference announcing their strike, Hollywood actors disclosed that the studios are demanding possession of their AI replicas without any compensation—a proposition that feels reminiscent of a dystopian narrative from the television series Black Mirror.

Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the chief negotiator for SAG-AFTRA, shared details of the Hollywood studios’ proposal, which was described by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) as a “groundbreaking AI proposal” safeguarding the digital likenesses of actors belonging to SAG-AFTRA.

When questioned about the proposal at the press conference, Crabtree-Ireland expressed his incredulity, stating:

“Yesterday, they presented us with this so-called ‘groundbreaking’ AI proposal. They suggested that our background performers should undergo scanning, receive payment for a single day’s work, and grant ownership of that scan, their image, and their likeness to the studios indefinitely. These studios would then have the right to utilize this digital representation without any consent or compensation, on any future project, for all eternity. If they believe this is a groundbreaking proposal, I suggest they reevaluate their perspective.”

The integration of generative AI has been a contentious issue in the ongoing negotiations between the two parties, with its implications extending beyond the current actors’ strike and also playing a significant role in the writers’ strike. SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher emphasized the urgency of the situation in her opening statement, warning, “If we fail to take a firm stand now, we will all face dire consequences. Our very existence is at stake, as we risk being replaced by machines.”

The SAG-AFTRA strike is scheduled to commence at midnight tonight, marking a pivotal moment in the struggle for fair treatment and the preservation of actors’ rights.

Obedience or Independence?

If you love Me, keep My commandments. —John 14:15

Our Lord never insists on obedience. He stresses very definitely what we ought to do, but He never forces us to do it. We have to obey Him out of a oneness of spirit with Him. That is why whenever our Lord talked about discipleship, He prefaced it with an “If,” meaning,…

Lynn's Comments: My dad used to sing these songs and I learned the words to most of them. They were great songs with wonderful lyrics—written to brighten one’s mood during the darkest of times.

When I was a kid, a penny could actually buy something! The corner store I used to go to as a kid is still there and is still selling "penny candy." I went in the other day and found that I could buy an actual licorice cigar—the kind we had as kids, the real thing! It was the right length, the right texture, and it had red sprinkles on the end. It even tasted the same. The only thing different was the cost, but I bought it anyway. You can’t put a price on nostalgia! Note: notice the milk carton on the counter…this caused a problem for readers on the following day.

Rolling This Wheelchair's Wheels Backwards Somehow Propels It Forward

by Andrew Liszewski

When the RoChair first appeared back in 2011, the wheelchair used an unorthodox center-mounted drive lever, operated with a rowing motion, to propel it forwards. Four years later the RoChair has been completely redesigned to look more traditional, until you see someone operating it.

Hyundai Sends Message To Astronaut In Space Using 11 Cars

by Tyler Lee

Sending a message to an astronaut in space seems like a pretty straightforward thing, but in what seems like a marketing stunt, Hyundai actually wrote out the message back on Earth but made it big enough where it could be seen all the way in space. As it stands there are only a few things visible from space (from a certain distance) so obviously they had to make it big.

How did they do that? The car manufacturer took 11 of its Hyundai Genesis sedans and drove it across Nevada’s Delamar Dry Lake. The message was from a 13-year old girl from Houston who wanted to tell her astronaut father in the International Space Station that she loved him, and boy did Hyundai manage to accomplish just that!

Not only was this image huge enough where it could be viewed from the International Space Station, but it was huge enough to get the attention from the Guinness World Records who proclaimed and certified it as being the largest tire track image that has been created to date. It’s a pretty cool stunt even though we know it was done for marketing purposes, however if you have a few minutes to spare then you’ll want to check how Hyundai did it in the video above.

The Science Behind Making the Fastest Possible Pinewood Derby Car

Tiny Inconspicuous Handcuff Key Could Land You in Giant Trouble

by C. S. Magor

The Tiny Inconspicuous Handcuff Key is, as the name implies, a handcuff key that is both “tiny” and “inconspicuous.” The key, which will open standard “peerless” cuffs, is small enough to be inconspicuously moved about your person as you are being restrained.

Why does it exist? The stated purpose for the Tiny Inconspicuous Handcuff Key is to help law enforcement personnel that have been easily restrained. If you use it when you are being lawfully restrained then you almost certainly risk being tased, beaten, and/or shot – and not necessarily in that order… so be smart.

Adult Size Big Wheel Trike will let you drift like a kid again

by Chris

Adult-Big-Wheel

There were a lot of toys that I remember having as a kid. Many of them I can still play with, even if I don’t get quite the same enjoyment from them that I did during my youth. There’s one that I outgrew many years ago, however, that I can’t play with, due to my size. I’m talking, of course, about my Big Wheel. That thing was great. If I wanted to pretend that I was peeling out, I’d just start pedaling as hard as I could from the start. But the best was building up some speed, then turning the wheel and drifting.

If you’ve been looking to relive the days of your youth, you’ll be happy to know that the High Roller Adult Size Big Wheel Trike exists. This trike is built to resemble the Big Wheels we all rode as kids. The frame is heavy duty steel, rather than plastic this time around. The 26” front tire is rubber, to give you more traction than the original. However, the 14” wheels on the back are still molded plastic, so you can slide just like you used to.

Being a kid again doesn’t come cheap, however. This adult toy comes with a very adult price. Currently the Adult Size Big Wheel Trike will set you back just under $650. The seat will accommodate that’s 5’2” to 6’6”, and up to 275 lbs.
