I may have gotten a bit carried away. Since I can remember, designing decor has been my pipe dream. My background in graphic design and branding has led me down a different path, but more recently they’ve been finding ways to intersect. This makes me jazzed. Naturally, I was pretty pumped when FLOR reached out to see if I was interested in flexing some creative muscles by creating three totally custom pieces created from their selection. They made the process super easy. So easy, it was hard to stop designing!

The first step in my creative process was pursuing FLOR’s Design Studio feature. I learned all about the different cuts and assembly tricks available. The squares are offered in three custom cuts, which is enough variety to create interesting patterning. I also pulled inspiration from looking through their line of templates. In order to make something unique, I was going to have to think outside the square. Possibilities really started to become endless you begin to consider scale and texture.

After doing the research, I started sketching. I wanted to design three types of flooring solutions: an extra large rug for a living area, a bold geometric runner for our new studio, and classic flooring solution for the concrete slab in our sunroom. Let the designing begin!

Soon enough, I had six different designs in varying shapes and sizes. The modularity of this system made it easy to make design decisions, and now I needed to consult with the designers at FLOR to select the squares I wanted and get some feedback regarding the construction of each rug.

Each FLOR store is designed to be a place to play. They have big grids on the floor along with gorgeous samples of patterns the designers on staff have constructed from the latest square offerings from FLOR. These guys know that they are talking about when it comes to pattern, texture, form, and repetition. I had so much fun chatting with the designers at the Minneapolis location, and they helped me narrow down my designs from 6 to 3. We then selected the perfects colors and textures for each rug.

Once all the designs were finalized, we placed our order. The squares came in the mail quickly after, packaged and pre-cut per my instructions. All I had to do was open each box and follow my grid to see the designs come to life. Each square fits together seamlessly and are bound by super simple (super strong) stickers. This construction system makes it super easy to swap out one or two squares in case of an accident.

So, without further babbling, here are my three designs!

Design One: Blue Geometric

I wanted to create a modern interpretation of navajo prints using monochromatic colors and different textures. We selected Made You Look Color in Indigo and Made You Look in Periwinkle and paired it with In The Deep in Frost. I love how dimensional this design became with the different textured squares!

Here’s a detail shot. It’s definitely Winne-approved….

The entire installation for this 10×12′ rug came together in an hour. We ordered extra squares incase we need to swap a few out!

Design Two: Geometric Runner

Our new studio space has a long hallway that was the perfect spot for a brightly colored statement. I worked with a fun palette here to make a 2×11′ runner that plays with repetition, contrasting colors, and unexpected combinations.

This rug includes the following squares:  Made You Look Color: IndigoMade You Look Color: CoralHaven Sent Color: Bone, and Made You Look Color: Maize. This one might be my favorite!

Design Three: Smart Tartan

This sunroom has been a thorn in my side since we moved into this house! We absolutely love this room; the windows are gorgeous and frankly it was a big reason we bought the house. But the floor was just a cold concrete slab. FLOR squares are the perfect solution here. They are easy to replace so we don’t have to worry about this space being our makeshift mudroom at the moment. I decided to really embrace the use of pattern here and opted for a neutral tartan plaid with bright coral borders. I think sage green and coral is my favorite color combo!

We couldn’t believe how instantly this space looked pulled together. Flooring can really make or break a space, you know? The squares we used in this space are: Made You Look Color: Coral Heaven Sent Color: BoneMade You Look Color: Grey, and Made You Look Color: Pigeon. You can purchase my Smart Tartan design here!

We bought a bunch of extra squares for this space because we anticipate it’ll be changed out often. What’s great about FLOR squares is they’re already treated to withstand stains and they recommend you clean them the same way you’d care for your carpet once a year. So, replacing these squares shouldn’t be a monthly event if you’re caring for it properly!

All-in-all, this partnership with FLOR was a blast. I would highly recommend using their customization tools to make your own one-of-a-kind recreation for your home. It’s fun, collaborative, and addicting way to update your home with a smart floor covering solution.

Push-ups

by Joanna Goddard
Have you seen this video of a girl who practiced push-ups for 100 days? She was self-conscious about her body and told she was "scrawny," but her transformation is so inspiring. I actually found myself doing push-ups in the boys' room at 6am this morning:)
