Electronic Skin Lights Up When Touched

Supple Skin: Built on plastic the new electronic skin contains arrays of pressure sensors, thin-film transistors, and organic LEDs.

A team of researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, has developed the first user-interactive “electronic skin” that responds to pressure by instantly emitting light.

“The goal is to use human skin as a model and develop new types of electronics that would enable us to interface with our environment in new ways,” explains Ali Javey, an electrical engineering and computer science professor at Berkeley and leader of the e-skin research team.

The electronic skin is made up of a network of sensors placed on thin plastic substrates that can spatially and temporarily map pressure. Javey describes the network as an array of 16 by 16 pixels, each one equipped with a carbon-nanotube thin-film transistor (TFT), a pressure sensor, and an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) on top. When the sensor detects touch, the TFT powers up the OLED, which then emits red, green, or blue light. The harder the pressure, the brighter the light will be. The end product is a thin, flexible material that can be placed on top of all sorts of surfaces.

Takao Someya, creator of a different type of electronic skin and an associate professor at the University of Tokyo’s Quantum Phase Electronics Center, was particularly impressed with the team’s use of carbon nanotubes. “One of their great achievements is to demonstrate feasibility of carbon nanotube field-effect transistors for large-area, flexible electronic applications,” he says.

Javey, who has been working on developing the e-skin for the past five years, has high hopes for his new material. He’d like to create user-interactive wallpaper or a dashboard that responds to cues such as the driver’s eye or body movements. When asked to describe how the interactive wallpaper would work, Javey referred to the scene in Minority Report in which Tom Cruise controls a computer by moving his hands. “That’s the direction we’re heading to—a new type of interfacing,” he says. “Getting rid of the keyboard, getting rid of display, and become in sync with our surroundings so that you don’t have these physical components sitting around. It’s part of the table; it’s part of the wall.”

In Javey’s proposed system, light sensors would read hand and body motions, and pressure sensors would respond to different degrees of touch. But there’s a good deal of work that must be done before we’ll be seeing interactive wallpaper, he says. “We know how to make complex systems on tiny silicon chips, but on plastic it’s a whole different story,” Javey says. “It’s still not a very complex system we have shown, but it’s still one of the most complex systems we have to date on plastic.” He adds that his team is interested in integrating light sensors as well as data-processing and wireless-communication capabilities onto the substrates.

“This is an inspiring development in the plastic device technology, which is likely to make many everyday experiences more stimulating,” says Nicholas Kotov, a professor at the University of Michigan who is working on flexible, stretchable electronics.

John Rogers, a materials science professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, says “the work illustrates the extent to which research in nanomaterials, once confined strictly to fundamental study on individual test vehicles, is now successfully moving toward sophisticated, macroscale demonstrator devices, with unique function. The results provide more evidence that the field is headed in the right direction.”

Stella Jogakuin Koutou-ka C³-bu Ep. 1 Thoughts

by KentaMisaka
Yuri, this is not.

Yuri, this is not.

Gunslinger Girl, this is not.

Gunslinger Girl, this is not.

Now that we got that out of the way, shall we begin?

I had previously believed that originality was rare, and even if found it would require a grand amount of execution to become truly special and memorable.

I still do.

But that’s not to say that originality is dead. Hell no. My brother literally slapped me silly for believing that. It is indeed possible to find such “original anime” in this decade; very few shows like The World God Only Knows, Durarara!, Hyouka, Chuunibyou, were able to provide truly unique experiences, or a unique twist – invigoration – of an established genre/formula.

Yachiyo Hinata best girl!

Yachiyo Hinata best girl!

Where am I going with this? This show, of course! I went into Stella Jogakuin Koutou-ka C³-bu expecting another trashy, K-On copycat, only to find myself enjoying what could be a fairly unique twist on the moe, slice-of-life, high-school club anime.

It starts out in familiar fare, with a dreamy-eyed girl, named Yura Yamato, on her first day of high schoo- HOLY CRAP that school is huge! Alright, so not everything is completely within Yura’s fantasy, but seriously; first world problems, I tell ya.

Rento Kirishima best girl!

Rento Kirishima best girl!

Uh, where was I? Right, then Yura finds a gun under her pillow- whoa, whoa, whoa, wait, a GUN?! Yes, and this is where things get interesting!

The gun’s fake, by the way.

Cue the opening sequence. Soon after, we’re greeted by an insane cast of characters, and I mean INSANE. Whether it’s Yachiyo and her wackily huggable expressions, the G36K-wielding meganekko Honoka, the cake-loving Rento with beautiful hair, or the machine gun-totting american stereotype Karila… they are all borderline sociopathic!

One minute they’re sweet as tea, and the next they handle their guns with eerie anticipation, and firing rounds with big smiles on their faces! It’s weird! And crazy! And I love every minute of it.

My reaction to meeting another otaku. :3

My reaction to meeting another otaku. :3

I admit it! I’ve fallen in love with these characters. Their passion for airsoft complements their madly eccentric personalities perfectly, constantly providing us with loads of on-screen hilarity and entertainment. It certainly helps that the chemistry and interaction between the entire cast are nothing short of fantastic. All of it feels particularly fresh, despite being held back by some K-On-ish moments. (Complete with tea, cakes and everything!)

K-On, this is not.

K-On, this is not.

The show feels polished as well. The animation is splendid where it counts (if you can get past the cutesy character designs), especially during the airsoft battles. The original creator definitely did his research when it came to military tactics. Being constantly on the move and switching between cover-to-cover, rolls, cover-fire, hand-signals, and surprise ambushes – there were no shortcuts or flashy stunts. Just good ol’ gunplay, and it was AWESOME. I also really liked Yura’s fantasy vision, which gave the battle a slight Chu-2 vibe to it. And who can forget that smooth jazz playing in the background?

Karila Hatsuse best girl!

Karila Hatsuse best girl!

So far, I like what I’m seeing. Clean animation, cute style, insane and memorable characters, and an awesome premise that sets itself up for intense, over-the-top airsoft battles! And to top it all off, no fanservice! The bad kind, I mean.

As long as the show doesn’t wallow in nothing happening at all, it may turn out to be one of the best shows of this season! My expectations are high, and I look forward to more of this insanity.

What a great way to kick start the summer season! :D

How NASA Steers the Int'l Space Station Around Asteroids & Other Debris

by Soulskill
willith writes "I got to sit down with ISS TOPO Flight Controller Josh Parris at the Houston Mission Control Center and talk about how NASA steers all 400 tons of the International Space Station around potential collisions, or 'conjunctions,' in NASA-parlance. The TOPO controller, with assistance from USSTRATCOM's big radars, keeps track of every object that will pass within a 'pizza-box'-shaped 50km x 50km x 4km perimeter around the ISS. Actually moving the station is done with a combination of large control moment gyros and thrusters on both the Zvezda module and visiting vehicles. It's a surprisingly complex operation!"

Frequently-asked questions

What will happen to my Google Reader data?

All Google Reader subscription data (eg. lists of people that you follow, items you have starred, notes you have created, etc.) will be systematically deleted from Google servers. You can download a copy of your Google Reader data via Google Takeout until 12PM PST July 15, 2013.

Will there be any way to retrieve my subscription data from Google in the future?

No -- all subscription data will be permanently, and irrevocably deleted. Google will not be able to recover any Google Reader subscription data for any user after July 15, 2013.

Why was Google Reader discontinued?

Please refer to our blog post for more information.

I don't understand why Google removes Reader data so soon and why the message uses words like "systematically deleted", "permanently, and irrevocably deleted". It's like they try to get rid of everything that's related to Reader. I can still download Google Buzz data from Google Takeout. A similar message was posted for Google Health, but users had one year to download their data.

Clinkle Wants To Become Your Wallet

by timothy
vikingpower writes "Clinkle, a new mobile payments start-up, may or may not have succeeded where so many other efforts have fizzled by inventing a practical way to replace credit cards with smartphones. It's hard to say, though, since Clinkle won't say much about how its system works. Its website is, well ... slight. But a prominent group of Silicon Valley investors who do know what Clinkle is cooking up are acting as though it has achieved a breakthrough. On Thursday, Clinkle announced that it had raised $25 million in early financing from Accel Partners; Andreessen Horowitz; Intel; Intuit; Marc Benioff, the chief executive of Salesforce.com; Peter Thiel, the co-founder of PayPal; and a long list of other investors with technology industry pedigrees. The Huffington Post has an article on Clinkle, or rather on Stanford students putting their degree on hold to go work at Clinkle. The Wall Street Journal [paywalled] mentions Clinkle having some 30-odd employees already."
