Remember that time Star Trek called out bigots about contraception ?

it’s absolutely wild to realize how ahead of its time star trek: tos was. how much agency it gave its female characters; how conscientious its casting was of revealing true diversity on the starship enterprise. it envisioned a future in which a woman could and would make choices independently of the men around her, in which people of all races operated together without question of or comment on the color of their skin, and its episode so often served to highlight the ridiculous arbitrariness of racism. what prejudice was so quick and so stupid to destroy.

the original series and kirk as idealist—as feminist, which he truly fucking was—was what truly great sci-fi should be. as an imagined future, it reveals more about the mistakes of our past and the disappointments of our present than it forecasts what’s to come. it saddens me that, so many decades later, this is still a conversation we’re having. 

forget about our jetpacks and our spaceships and our teleportation devices. it’s the future now and we deserve the common decency of our fucking rights.
