HARVESTING GREEN GOLD/OLIVES for OIL: THE HEART & SOUL of SABINA - Part1

This year we have been having a lot of fun helping friends harvest their olives. It is an amazing experience! A few years back we were fortunate enough to be able to assist our friend Pino for a few hours over two days while he was harvesting in an olive grove located just below Casperia's town wall that belonged to the town butcher, Armando Sileri. I am not sure how much we actually helped. It was our first time. 



We went down with our English friends Helen and Ritchie. The long mechanised rake Pino was using was a bit of a noisy mystery. We did our best passing it up and down through the olive laden branches but it seemed that we harvested as many leaves and twigs as olives. I think that we were more help cleaning the twigs and leaves from the olives in the nets. 



Bottom line I think that Pino, who was working by himself, was just glad of some company. Either way, a couple of days later, there was a knock on our door, and there was Pino with a tin of precious oil, freshly pressed from the olives we had helped him harvest.

2016 was a bad year for the olive growers here in central Italy so, even if we had wanted to, there were no opportunities to help with the olive harvest last year. More to the point though, there was very little new olive oil last year. The olives that were harvestable after a year of very uncooperative weather—spring rains had interfered with the pollination and those that developed ended up being badly hit by the olive fly—obviously were not in any condition to produce excellent oil.

The 2016 bad olive harvest caused panic. Those, like us, who did not have a large stock of Sabine oil from the previous year sought out producers who did and bought as many litres of oil that they could afford to tide them over until this year's harvest. As there was only so much Sabine oil from the previous year to go around, many were forced to purchase their oil outside Sabina... like from across the Tiber in the Province of Viterbo, or across the mountains in Umbria, or—gulp—even in Toscana. 


All this year we were anxiously checking the local olive groves to see if the flowers had opened and, later, how much fruit had set. Every time Richard and I would go for a walk in the country and would bump into an uliveto-owning contadino we would solicit their opinion: 


Quest'anno, ci saranno olive? Quest'anno, ci sarà d'olio?

Will there be olives this year? This year, will there by any oil? And each time the response would be a  pair of raised weathered hands and a resigned shrug. 


Sinceramente non lo so. Speriamo bene.

Who could tell? The summer had been incredibly hot this year. By the time late September rolled around the hills you could see around Casperia were red with what looked like early autumn colours but in reality the leaves of the holm oak, oak, beech and chestnut trees trees of the Colli Sabini had been burnt by the torrid summer heat and lack of rain. 

But what did that mean for this year's olive harvest? We asked a number of friends who had olive groves and the answer was inconsistent: 


Quest'anno poca roba.

Some had few or no olives. Others said that there were less olives than usual, but what was there seemed free from the mosca dell'olivo—the olive fly. The previous cold winter and the intense summer heat had spared what there was of this year's crop from the fly's larva's devastation. 


Quest'anno le olive sono sincere,

was another woman's response as we talked in a line up at the tobacconist. This year, the olives are 'sincere', which I took to mean that they were healthy and worm free. 



So what follows is a bit of an olive harvest journal written over a number of weeks which covers the two raccolte delle olive that we helped with. There is of course so added commentary to add some flow. Hopefully this will give you an idea of what is involved and the learning curve we went through.

Today we are heading north of Casperia's fortified historic centre to help our friends Fiona and Giles to harvest their olives. Giles and Fiona are from England but for a number of months out of the year live in their charming country house which is nestled among some olive covered rolling hills a few kilometres north of the centro storico. 

If you follow our cat Smokey's blog you will be familiar with Giles and Fiona. It was they who very kindly saved us—not only Smokey, Richard and I—but a number of other friends from what would have been a very unhappy day when Casperia was temporarily evacuated during last year's earthquake. It may seem odd, but for Smokey that afternoon in the green of the Sabine countryside was probably one of the happiest days of his life here in Italy. We get a ride to Giles and Fiona's place with our friends Chris and Meg Phillips. They are the owners of the beautifully restored stone house at the top of the town called Il Sogno where Richard and I stayed during our first visits to Sabina... and here we are eight years later, living in Casperia, and going to pick olives together. What a strange and wonderful world.

Johnny Madge is a bit of a local legend. An Englishman who has lived in Italy for over half his life, Johnny is not only an accomplished sculptor, he is also a self-made olive oil expert, an internationally respected olive oil taster and judge, and since 2010, a very popular olive oil and wine tour guide here in Sabina. Johnny is just plain popular. More than anything, he is a great guy with a wicked sense of humour so it was a real treat to be picking with him on many levels.

Giles and Fiona have owned their 1/4 hectare of property with about 500 square metres dedicated to olives since November of 2015. Besides their twenty-three olive trees they have twenty-two fruit and nut trees which include apricot, pear, apple, plum, persimmon and walnut. The first harvested their olives and made oil in 2015 but there were not enough good olives to harvest in 2016. They have high hopes for this year.



When we arrived shortly after 09:30 Giles had the tele―olive nets―already spread out below a row of trees and Giles, Fiona and Johnny were already hard at work hand harvesting the olives with yellow plastic olive rakes called rastrelli

Johnny had brought the equipment; the nets and the olive rakes. There were a number of hand rakes that had been mounted on long poles in order to reach the olives lurking in the higher branches.



And of course Giles had a couple of ladders for those willing to climb into the trees.

Before an uliveto can be harvested, all the high grass, weeds and random shrubs that have grown up around the trees during the summer have to be cut down and cleared away. This is not only to make it easier to spread the tele under the olive trees, but it also helps protect the nylon tele from and rips or tears that can be caused if they are caught on something sharp growing out of the ground.  



According to what can be gleaned from  images of the olive harvest on ancient Greek pottery, early methods of harvesting olives involved hand picking and beating the upper branches with poles and gathering the fallen olives by hand.

I remember when I was nine or ten years old seeing this image of the harvest in National Geographic's Everyday Life In Ancient Times.



Like the image on the amphora cited above, naked youths are beating the olives free from the branches while others gather the fallen drupes on the ground. The olives are gathered in a pile in the left foreground, while to the right stones and human weight are used to press and extract oil from stacked nets of olives. Though sunny, it is a cool day here in Sabina so there is not going to be any nudity at this harvest!

Rather than beating the olives to the ground with sticks, today we will be harvesting by hand and rakes, pulling the olives from the branches so that they fall onto the tele nets waiting below. When the trees above the nets are picked clean, the olives in the nets will be carefully gathered together in a pile, any leaves and twigs that can be picked from the nets will be extracted and the olives then poured from the nets into plastic crates. 



Each full crate will equal roughly twenty-five kilos of olives with four crates equalling a quintale, or hundredweight, of olives.  

I am not sure when people in Sabina started using nets to harvest olives. Less than a hundred years ago, people were still harvesting like this, hand harvesting into baskets.




I  noticed two different tela shapes being used at today's harvest.

One is a long rectangle. Wide enough to be spread between two lines of olive trees and long enough to be used under one side of two, sometimes three trees. Most of the olive groves here around Casperia are on slopes so the tele are laid on both sides of a line of trees descending the slope. Usually the tele are pinned together with mollette—clothespins—to keep the olives that fall into the net from slipping under and getting lost. 

The second type of tela being used is another rectangle but this has a slit running two thirds of the way up the middle and is designed so one tela can be used to harvest a number of trees in a line at the same time. The longer, split end points downhill and ideally the overlapping edges of the split part are fastened together by clothes pins. There is usually one person in the team who takes responsibility for the clothes pins. Today, it was Johnny.



Obviously, since you are usually harvesting on a slope, there is a danger that olives loosed from the branches by people working with the hand rakes will fall from the tree and roll down the slope so fast that they overshoot the net. To prevent this the lower ends of the tele are raised, sometimes using empty olive crates, but more often using stakes hammered into the ground. If it is a steeper slope and mechanical rakes are being used sometimes it is best to have the ends held up high by people in the harvesting team.

Giles and Johnny were very organised and had a number of sharpened wooden stakes ready for the lower edges of the tele.

Of the twenty-three olive trees on Giles and Fiona's property, only fourteen had enough olives to harvest this year. There is usually a mix of different types of olive trees in any given uliveto as some olive varieties are self pollinating, and others, to varying degrees, require the pollen of other olives to produce fruit.

The predominant varietal here in Sabina is the Carboncella. When the tree is full of ripe black fruit it is easily recognisable, even to novice, as the tree is covered with a myriad of small roundish coal-black drupes. Despite their small size, the Carboncella has a relatively high resa, or oil percentage of 22 up to 26% and is therefore highly prized. 



Carboncella is not self pollinating and therefore must be planted with other pollinating varietals of olives such as Leccino, Pendolino and Frantoio.  

A good number of Giles and Fiona's trees were Carboncella, but obviously, there were others but at first these were hard to identify. At least for me.

But the more you harvest, the more you pass your rake through the branches and touch the branches and leaves, as you dislodge the olives with your fingers, you begin to notice differences. Different olives even feel different as you pull them from their branches.

The most obvious differences you notice are the size, shapes, colours and even textures of the olives you are picking. Think of apples. You don't need to read the grocery store labels to differentiate between a Delicious and a Granny Smith, or a Russet and a Cox's Orange Pippin or McIntosh.  I found it was the same with olives. Even though I could only distinguish with confidence which was the Carboncella, I started to be able to see that there were at least three, four, maybe even more different varietals in Giles and Fiona's Uliveto. 

If Carboncella is small, roundish and black when ripe there were some olives that were quite large, plump and pointed at the bottom. There were some olives that were almost pear shaped and others shaped like a rugby ball. The colour range was surprising. If some were  bright, almost kelly or parakeet green, there were some which were a blend of green and rosy pink, even purple, and some that were even speckled. It was fascinating.



We went from tree to tree, using our rastrelli or hand raking the olives into the nets. As the olives accumulate on the ground it becomes harder and harder to move without stepping on them and crushing them. You have to look up to pick the olives on one branch and look down before you dare move to go to reach the olives on another. Even if seconds before there were no olives anywhere near your foot, the sloping ground lets bouncing and rolling olives which first touched ground metres away suddenly accumulate around your feet. 

     
Once you get the olives from a number of trees down into the nets, you next have to carefully gather the olives in the nets into one pile and then clean out the twigs and leaves before they you can put them in the crates. 
























It is important to clear as much of the twigs and leaves from the olives before they go into the cases. Though these are mechanically separated from the olives at the frantoio, producers have to pay for the milling of their olives based on the weight of the olives in their crates.



As you can see from this photo, this stage of the work was a chance to tell stories and joke around a bit. 

We had a coffee and tea break half way through the morning then started on another row of trees.

At one point Johnny pointed out an interesting looking yellow shrub which he called Inula



According to Johnny, this plant is very important to have in an uliveto because it attracts a particular type of wasp which is the natural enemy and scourge of the olive fly.



Work continues for the rest of the morning. We rake the olives into the nets, gather the nets, clean the olives and dump them into crates then move the nets to the next row of trees. Johnny and Giles to most of the net placing. At times the nets are filled with black olives, then some with a mix of colours. Every so often we hit a tree with larger green olives. I have no idea what they are but they are beautiful.



And then, all of a sudden, it is lunch time. Fiona has made a gorgeous pasta, fettuccine dressed with toasted hazelnuts and sautéed cavolo nero. 



We savour the warm bowl of pasta and the gorgeous view. It is good to rest but there are more olive trees to harvest.














Johnny reckons that there are six types of olives in this uliveto: 

Carboncella
Frantoio
Leccino
Pendolino
Ascolana Tenera and
Itrana

Frantoio is a Tuscan varietal. It is self pollinating and has a high oil yield, usually around 23 percent. Leccino is another Tuscan varietal. It is a good producer with a yield of 18 to 20 percent. It is not a self pollinator. Pendolino is another Tuscan varietal and another olive that cannot pollinate itself but its pollen is invaluable to the Carboncella, Frantoio and Leccino. The Ascolana Tenera is native to the Marche region from the area around Ascoli Picena and is actually an olive di mensa or eating olive. 



The olive all'Ascolana is a favourite bar snack. The pit of the cured olive is removed and the space filled with a pre-cooked minced meat mixture. The olive is then dipped in flour, beaten egg, then bread crumbs before being fried in olive oil.

The sixth varietal in the oliveto, and Johnny was really excited to find this, is the Itrana or Gaeta olive. The Itrana is a large green olive with a purply-red blush which gets more purple as it matures and is used both as an eating olive and to make oil. It comes from the province of Latina in southern Lazio. It is not self pollinating so it is usually planted in the company of Ascolana Tenera, Pendolino or Leccino trees. Johnny showed us how when the olive was crushed that it had an amazing tomato aroma. 


We continue working through the afternoon, finishing up the last row of trees below the house before we head up to deal with the last and largest of the trees. 
























  
By the end of the day we have filled four cases with olives. Giles suggests that we all bet how many kilograms we have collected and then how many litres of oil they will ultimately produce. 



We all make our bets. Giles writes everything down in a notebook but before he heads off to the frantoio in Montopoli with the olives we gather the nets and tools together and help load everything in Johnny's truck.






While Giles was off delivering the crates of olives to the Frantoio, the rest of us relaxed and enjoyed our first glass of wine for the day and watched the sunset. Down in the valley to the east of us other people were still labouring in their uliveto. Richard and I went for a walk along the gravel road on the edge of Giles and Fiona's property and admired the neighbour's olive trees. They looked like dancing Ents.



When Giles got back later that night we all sat down and enjoyed a lovely dinner together, a chicken stew that Giles had made earlier. 


Working for most of a day hand harvesting fourteen olive trees with a team of seven friends: three Brits, two Americans and two Canadians was an amazing experience. When you touch an olive tree here in Sabina. When you work your fingers through its curtain of branches and you pull the plump drupes from the twigs that hold them, you are not just touching a tree or playing at being a farmer. You are inserting yourself into something old. You are touching an agricultural history that in this part of Italy stretches back at least 2600 years. 


A half hour's drive to the west of Giles and Fiona's olive grove, almost visible from their house, is a small hill town called Poggio Sommavilla.

In 1896 a ceramic flask inscribed with what is thought to be the earliest example of Sabine writing was discovered in a necropolis there. 


The flask, which dates to the 7th century BCE and is now part of Boston's Museum of Fine Arts' collection, when tested was found to contain traces of olive oil!


A 30 minute drive south of Giles and Fiona's olive grove, their olives were being pressed and turned into oil in a modern mill in Montopoli. 



In the end, it turns out that our four crates of olives weighed 92 kilograms, just under a quintale. 



And you can see below who won the lottery. Richard was closest as far as the weight of the olives went and Meg was closest in her guess of how much oil they would make. In the end, 92kg of olives produced 14kg or 15.12 litres of delicious Sabine olive oil.




After the harvest we all tried very hard to schedule a get-together to taste the oil but sadly that didn't work out. Instead, Giles turned up at our door with two half-litre bottles of the oil we helped make. What a thrill!



We opened a bottle and sniffed. The aroma was intense, grassy. We couldn't wait to do our own tasting so we made some bruschette.

I found out later from Giles that Johnny had blind taste-tested their oil with six others. I asked Giles if it would be okay to have Johnny's tasting notes. Here is the text that Giles sent me.

"Ciao caro. Here are Johnboy’s tasting notes: 

'Nice fruit on nose. Appley, full; lettuce, escarole, grass (the legal one), raw peas. Long burn. Bitterness was not offensive. In a couple of months I’d like to taste again.'

He also said he gave it a 6 out of 10!"

Like I said, 

YUM!

It’s more of a philosophy of living. Hygge champions the age-old wisdom that true happiness and wellbeing are stoked by savouring the simple things in life with people that make you feel loved and accepted.

With 24/7 social media immersion, unplugging from technology and making time with loved ones is more critical to our mental and emotional health than ever before. So, as the leaves are falling and winter is nipping at our heels, here are some affordable ideas to stoke those hygge vibes right here in Vancouver:

We serve our favourite local mix from CocoaWest in our Bistro, and you can take it home with you from our retail store or online shop! It’s decadent and velvety smooth all at once.

You can find tons of unique, gourmet recipes online. My personal favourites involve salted caramel, maple syrup, bourbon, or some combination of the three.

It’s Time

The Mobility Pricing Independent Commission is conducting a survey in Metro Vancouver. They have asked me to share the link to the survey which closes on November 26.

Congestion on Metro Vancouver’s roads and bridges is a challenge many of us experience daily. Lengthy delays can leave us frustrated, stressed, and wasting time that could be spent doing things we actually like.

It’s time we do something about it. It’s time we have a real conversation about combating congestion.

The It’s Time project is looking at how to improve Metro Vancouver’s road transportation network using something called decongestion charging. Decongestion charging is already making travel easier for people in many other major cities around the world such as Singapore, Stockholm, and London. Here in Metro Vancouver we have been paying for road use through the fuel tax and the recently removed bridge tolls. Unfortunately, the way charging has been structured in the region isn’t actually addressing congestion where it’s most needed, wasn’t always fair, and isn’t generating the revenue we need to upgrade and maintain our transportation system.

We want you to be part of the conversation as we explore what successful decongestion charging could mean for our region. Tell us what issues you think need to be addressed, and help us build a tailored approach for Metro Vancouver that gets people moving. Week 144 of chemo complete: The colour of autumn

I love the colour of the leaves right now. Wednesday morning it was cloudy and windy and I sensed that rain showers were approaching. I headed to Queen Elizabeth Park to take some self-portraits quickly, before it began to rain again. Exploring nature on a beautiful autumn day is a definite positive for my well-being.

Week 144 of chemo complete: The colour of Autumn

To recap: On Sunday, November 12th, I completed Cycle 36 Week 4. I have Multiple Myeloma and anemia, a rare cancer of the immune system. Multiple myeloma is a cancer of the plasma cells that affects the plasma cells, a type of immune cell that produces antibodies to fight infection. These plasma cells are found in the bone marrow. As a blood cancer, it is incurable, but treatable. Since February 9th 2015, I have been on Pomalyst and dexamethasone chemo treatment (Pom/dex). On July 16th, my dexamethasone treatment ended, due to eye damage, reported by my Glaucoma Specialist, from long-term use.

Counting not connecting

I'm sitting outside Bar Italia in Soho's fashionable Soho. According to Swarm this is the 600th time I've been here. It's more though, obviously. I first came here in the 80s. I still like 'checking into' places. I like counting things like that. I like the sense of scale and tempo it gives me. I know we're all more and more aware of the pernicious effects of digital tools but I, at least, still like the tally-stick capabilities of the little pocket databases we carry around. I like that I can count things. I use Streak to monitor occasional minor medical occurrences and to remind me to take my statins. And to nudge me into writing every day.

My mother-in-law is visiting at the moment. She loves her newly acquired Fitbit. We were comparing notes about steps this morning over cereal and we agreed that counting steps occasionally nudges us both out of the sofa, but it never occurred to either of us to 'become friends' on Fitbit. That's not the point. Somewhere along the way all this counting, these notches on sticks, got intermingled with community and connection and competition and gamification. Counting became sharing became sousveillance. Now, rightly, we're running from that. But that doesn't make the counting worthless. It reminds me of what Nat and Dan wrote about Bulletin. I want a device that's smart but not connected. For counting.

Book Review: The 5G Myth

The vision for 4G networks was quite clear: Get a faster cellular network standard that supports more subscribers simultaneously. When it comes to 5G the vision is not quite as clear as pretty much everything wireless that is imaginable has been thrown into the pot. But will any of it make a difference? William Webb thinks 5G is a myth and has put his thoughts into a 150 page book of the same title. He argues that very little of it is needed, very little of it will be deployed and 4G in combination with Wifi would do a much better job then chasing the 5G myth.

Published back in November 2016 I’ve only now come around to read it but I was thrilled to do so because I share many of his thoughts when it comes to what 5G is actually all about and the problems on the road ahead.

5G below 6 GHz and for NB-IoT? No.

William argues, like I also said in my recent post on 5G in 28 GHz, that introducing 5G in the currently used spectrum below 6 GHz brings only few benefits for the broadband Internet use case, it could easily be done with LTE as well. He then goes on to argue that there is also little if anything in 5G for the Internet of Things (IoT) that isn’t already covered with LTE’s CAT M and NB-IoT extensions that are now being deployed in practice. So why introduce an additional technology with few additional benefits and fracture and confuse the marketplace?

5G mmWave? No.

William also doesn’t believe 5G in the mmWave spectrum (28 GHz and up) will bring massive benefits either as new and yet to be developed technology is required to extend range of a signal to a few hundred meters at best. And even then, the range of a signal in mmWave spectrum will do little to complement LTE on the cellular level due to its still limited range. Further he goes on to say that 5G as a replacement for fixed wireless access, i.e. as a replacement for copper and fiber to the home, is also a flawed vision as the range of mmWave signals even in such a use case scenario is 500 meters at best and thus can be much better bridged over copper with an evolution of VDSL such as G.fast.

5G Required For Continuing Traffic Growth? No.

Another important point that is made in the book is that traffic growth in wireless networks will come to an end and will level out at around 10 times of what the average person uses today. After all, most traffic already today is generated by video streaming and there is a natural limit when it comes to time and content that can be consumed on the move. Also display sizes of smartphones and tablets are not going to increase anymore so there will be no need for higher resolutions of video streams in the future. Based on current consumption and trends, William thinks that there will be no further traffic growth in cellular networks from around 2027. This is one of the central points in his books to me and I will go into more detail on this in a follow up post.

Another important argument in the book is that 5G also doesn’t bring anything new to solve the most pressing issue which is high speed Internet connectivity everywhere. In rural areas low frequency ranges that can cover large areas are required. Here, 5G won’t do any better job than LTE already does. 5G also won’t help to bring more capacity where it is missing today: indoors. Most data is generated indoors today and at home or in the office, Wifi picks up that traffic. But there are many public spaces where this is not yet the case which would require public Wifi or small cells. The problem with small cells (and operator Wifi) in public spaces is that each operator would have to deploy its own small cells to keep competition up, something we are already struggling today in many places. 5G will not bring anything new to the table.

An Alternative Way Forward

William then goes on propose an alternative way forward. Instead of pushing 5G, he makes the case to extending rural coverage with 4G in low frequency bands and to find a way to extend public in-building Wifi coverage that can be used by everybody automatically when in range without complicated sign-on processes. From my point of view the technology to do this is already there today and I will go into the details of this in a separate post. Unfortunately, such a future would require disruptive action throughout the industry and politics. Personally, I think the chances for this are rather slim from today’s point of view. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it will stay like this forever should it become clear that the current business model of mobile network operators won’t work anymore when the move from macro cell to a small cell deployment is required to keep up with demand and getting a more ubiquitous Internet access than we have today.

Lots of great thoughts in the book and while I don’t quite agree with all of them I think this is a must read book for anyone in the industry who is concerned with 5G!

BlackBerry Motion :: Don't worry about the battery. Ever.

I got the BlackBerry Motion on Tuesday and charged it overnight. Took it off the charger on Wednesday morning and then never recharged it until this morning. Four days. Even more impressive: within one hour on the charger it was back at 75%. That means you can use it all day and then recharge it in maybe half an hour. And that is the charger that came in the box. No additional purchase necessary.

Even if you forget to recharge it, the battery should always last a second day. That is just practical. I am not suggesting to run it for four days. But you never need to worry you will run out of power before you go to sleep.

How do you make a machine this efficient? First of all you start with a big 4000 mAh battery, then you add decent components like the Snapdragon 625 chipset. It's not the fastest on the market, but it sure is fast enough. And then you work on the software. That is often overlooked. You can have a medium size battery and still outrun a much bigger and faster machine that has better specs on paper. Not all Androids are alike. The Moto Z Play was always famous for never running out of juice.

Four days is so ridiculous that people immediately asked if I even used the device. And I did. Screen was on eleven hours. That is very light use, but the Motion is only my secondary phone. If you are looking at your screen eleven hours in a single day, you may have bigger issues than battery life.

On font fallbacks and failures

A few thoughts I’ve had about typography on the web:

Monospace fonts are only as monospace as their character support

I was recently using Monodraw to add illustrations to some code comments, explaining, in this case, how a CSS flexbox layout worked. I drew the graphics, chose UTF8 mode, copied & pasted into neovim, and they looked great. I pushed the commit, reviewed it on GitHub, and what I saw were misaligned shapes, everywhere. I considered it for a while, checking that Monodraw didn’t have any widely-reported bugs. Checked in the web inspector that GitHub was showing the correct content.

Then I realized: what is monospace? In this case, monospace is a property of a font, not text. You don’t write in your CSS stylesheet font-type: monospace, you just specify a monospace font, like font-family: Menlo, monospace. Your browser doesn’t know whether you intend for all that output to be monospaced or not, only that you chose a certain font and that font happened to have all characters with the same width-to-height ratio, and constant kerning.

GitHub, to their credit, use something similar to the system font stack: a set of good-looking fonts that are on people’s computers. But nonetheless, the font first in their font stack that was present on my computer – Consolas – didn’t have some of the characters that Monodraw uses in its output. So the browser fell back to a font that did have those characters (I think Menlo), but had a different ratio of width to height, so the lines that included ‘exotic’ characters were misaligned.

Conceptualizing typography choice

Working with maps made me think of fonts in a different way. When we’re designing websites and other material, we write most of the content and choose how that content is displayed. You can seek a certain harmony here, choosing modes of display that fit the text.

But there are known unknowns: contributed and existing content. For maps, that’s the names of places around the world, in their native characters. The norm for web maps is global coverage, so every map you design with the viewport comfortably centered over some major American city with place names mostly in the ASCII range can be panned over to China, with its hundreds of glyphs, or Japan, with its multiple scripts.

For other websites - like for the ones I’m working on now - the wildcard is user generated data. The hope is that it’ll be successful enough that people around the world will use the website. Their names will have a wide range of characters, like æ and ㄞ, and the content they author will too.

Not to pick on webfonts too much, because system fonts even are limiting in this way - the system default version of Futura, for instance, only has 439 glyphs and support for a small subset of the world’s languages.

A webfont with wide Unicode coverage will have poor load performance because it includes so many glyphs, and an efficient font with fewer glyphs will have weaker international support. The way forward is unicode range subsetting, a technique I wish was more common and much more developer-friendly.

Debugging fonts should be better

I want more robust tools for inspecting fonts. I love Chrome’s Web Developer tools, but they offer little in the way of inspecting fonts. macOS’s default management tool, Font Book, also doesn’t offer much in terms of browsing - searching for, say “a font that includes tabular numbers” isn’t supported, as far as I can tell.

Fonts on the web as currently designed – and fonts in general – break quietly, which in my opinion is a real issue. They’ll quietly synthesize a shameful faux bold version if a true bold isn’t available. When a glyph isn’t available, they’ll search down the font stack and substitute a usable-but-not-quite-right replacement.

In production, this is desired behavior. We prefer imperfect visual quality to complete breakage. But in development, it’s a frustrating mess. Faux bolds and fallback glyphs are, in many cases, error states, or they at least deserve a warning. The proposed font-synthesis property will turn off faux bold generation, but without any feedback: if you request a bold variant and one doesn’t exist, it simply shows the existing font.

For now, I’m going to experiment with adding a debugging font stack that only includes my first-choice font and then an obnoxious and obvious fallback font to make errors louder.

Statebins Reimagined

A long time ago, in a github repo far, far away there lived a tiny package that made it possible to create equal area, square U.S. state cartograms in R dubbed statebins🔗. Three years have come and gone and — truth be told — I’ve never been happy with that package. It never felt “right” and that gnawing feeling finally turned into action with a “re-imagining” of the API.

Previously, on statebins

There were three different functions in the old-style package:

  • one for discrete scales (it automated ‘cuts’)
  • one for continuous scales
  • one for manual scales

It also did some hack-y stuff with grobs to try to get things to look good without putting too much burden on the user.

All that “mostly” worked, but I always ended up doing some painful workaround when I needed more custom charts (not that I have to use this package much given the line of work I’m in).

Downsizing statebins

Now, there’s just one function for making the cartograms — statebins() — and another for applying a base theme — theme_statebins(). The minimalisation has some advantages that we’ll take a look at now, starting with the most basic example (the one on the manual page):

Two things should stand out there:

  • you got scale_fill_distiller() for free!
  • labels are dark/light depending on the tile color

Before we go into ^^, it may be helpful to show the new function interface:

You pass in the state name/abbreviation & value columns like the old interface but also specify colors for the dark & light labels (set hex code color with 00 ending alpha values if you don’t want labels but Muricans are pretty daft and generally need the abbreviations on the squares). You can set the font size, too (we’ll do that in a bit) and customize the border color (usually to match the background of the target medium). BUT, you also pass in the ggplot2 scale function you want to use and the named parameters for it (that’s what the ... is for).

So, yes I’ve placed more of a burden on you if you want discrete cuts, but I’ve also made the package way more flexible and made it possible to keep the labels readable without you having to lift an extra coding finger.

The theme()-ing is also moved out to a separate theme function which makes it easier for you to further customize the final output.

But that’s not all!

There are now squares for Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and New York City (the latter two were primarily for new features/data in cdcfluview but they are good to have available). Let’s build out a larger example with some of these customizations (we’ll make up some data to do that):

Debugging the ALPHA!

While I have worked with D3.js in the past, the d3-force layout library was entirely new to me and it was very interesting to learn the concepts behind the physical simulations in order to understand the networks and hierarchies of the first and the third party trackers for Lightbeam. It did take enormous blood and sweat to understand this force layout in depth, but the end result is what I am super proud of today.

Simulating physical forces

The d3-force layout module implements a velocity Verlet numerical integrator for simulating physical forces on particles. Verlet integration is a numerical method used to integrate Newton’s equations of motion. In mathematical physics, equations of motion are equations that describe the behaviour of a physical system in terms of its motion as a function of time.

In simple words, this module creates a simulation for an array of nodes and links, and composes the desired forces. As the nodes and links update, they are rendered in our preferred graphics systen, Canvas or SVG, by listening for tick events.

After initialising the simulation through d3.forceSimulations(nodes) and registering the links force, it took lot of trial and errors to register the right amount of other forces and achieve the correct simulation.

This is part of the d3-force layout and this was the trickiest of all!

I might have read the below lines a dozen times in d3-force layout documentation, but I was never able to figure out how alpha truly worked. As I am writing this post, I am very happy that I finally understand how this alpha works.

The tick function increments the current alpha by (alphaTargetalpha) × alphaDecay; then invokes each registered force, passing the new alpha; then decrements each node’s velocity by velocity × velocityDecay; lastly increments each node’s position by velocity.

This sounds very simple as I write. After all, what is the big deal with this alpha? 🙂 But as stated earlier, I didn’t know the true importance of alpha, and as a result, I didn’t know how to stablise the graph.

Launching the Malaysia Open Data User Group

I spent the last week in Kuala Lumpur to support the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU) with their open data implementation efforts (such as the Malaysian open data portal). Specifically this trip was about the launch of the Malaysia Open Data User Group (MODUG), as well as discussions with MAMPU on how we can help support their 2018 and 2019 open data plans. I was there together with my World Bank colleague Carolina Vaira, and with Baden Appleyard, a long time long distance friend of my company The Green Land. As he is from Australia, working together in Malaysia means meeting sort-of half way.

The MODUG comes from the action plan presented last May, after our Open Data Readiness Assessment last year, which I helped bring about when I first visited in spring 2015 as part of the Malaysian big data advisory board. In the action plan we suggested creating an informal and trusted place for government organisations to discuss their practical issues and concerns in creating more open data, learn from each other, and collaborate on specific actions as well as formulating government good practice. Similarly it called for creating a similar space for potential users of government open data, for individuals, coding community, NGO’s and civil society, academia and the business community. Next to having these two places where both government and non-government can discuss their questions and issues amongst themselves, regular interaction was proposed between the two, so that data custodians and users can collaborate on creating social and economic value with open data in Malaysia. The MODUG brings these three elements under one umbrella.

Last Tuesday MAMPU held an event to launch the MODUG, largely moderated by Carolina and me. MAMPU is within the remit of General Affairs Minister within the Prime Minister’s office, Joseph Entulu Belaun. The Minister officially opened the event and inaugurated the MODUG (by cutting a ribbon hanging from a drone hovering in front of him).

Dr Yusminar, who is the team lead with MAMPU for open data, and our direct counter part in our work with MAMPU, provided a frank overview of efforts so far, and things that still need to be tackled. This helped set the scene for the rest of the day by providing a shared understanding of where things currently stand.

Then we got to work with the participants, in two rounds of a plenary panel followed by roundtable discussions. The first round, after data holders and users in a panel discussed the current general situation, government and non-government groups discussed separately, looking at which data they see demand for, the challenges they encounter in publishing or using the data, and the suggestions they have overcoming those. The second round started with a panel bringing some international experiences and good practice examples, during which I got a new title, that of ‘open data psychologist’ because of stressing the importance of the social aspects, behaviour and attitude involved in making open data work. The panel was followed with round table conversations that mixed both data custodians and users. Conversations centered on finding a collective agenda to move open data forward. After each round the results from each table were briefly presented, and the output attached to the walls. Participants clearly appreciated having the time and space to thoroughly discuss the open data aspects they find important, and be heard by their colleagues and peers. They indicated wanting to do this more often, which is great to hear as creating the room for such conversations is exactly what the MODUG is meant for!

Web workers for Lightbeam

This is an initial attempt to improve the graph’s performance for large number of nodes using web workers. This PR is a work in progress.

The idea here is to off-load the heavy force layout computations to the web worker. This improves performance during page load.

I am also experimenting on passing the logic to web workers during the drag events. This part is still work in progress.

Here is the rough idea that I try to achieve:

In the present situation, when we drag, the force layout restarts the simulation. When there are large no. of nodes, the graph takes a lot of time to achieve equilibrium, thereby dropping the frame rates. Restarting the simulation is necessary, to compute the updated coordinates and give the soft transition, else the drag effect doesn’t appear smooth.

Using web workers, I try to keep the dragged coordinates in the main thread, invoke the web worker during dragEnd. The web worker computes the updated coordinates and waits until the graph attains equilibrium. I need to figure a way to get the updated coordinates and achieve smooth animations.

Web workers

Web Workers is a simple means for web content to run scripts in background threads.

A Web Worker is just a general purpose background thread. The intention here is to run background code such that long running tasks do not block the main event loop and cause a slow UI.

Motivation to use web workers for Lightbeam

Considering the single threaded nature of JavaScript, using web workers we can take off the burden from main thread when we have to deal with heavy computational work, which is true for Lightbeam. When the number of nodes increase, the force layout takes a lot of time to stabilise. The UI (main) thread is busy calculating the force layout values and in turn slows down the UI drastically. It becomes difficult to interact with the graph at this point.

When we started this project, performance was the key factor and we were happy to see the improvements canvas did over svg. Now we are expecting to see huge performance benefits via web workers.

Bose, Indiegogo & the noise-masking sleepbuds

Do you buy stuff off Indiegogo, Kickstarter or any other of the crowdfunding sites out there? Or have you ever tried raising funds that way either successfully or unsuccessfully? I've only dabbled as a buyer a couple of times for things that friends have been raising money for. I've looked plenty of times but I've never been sufficiently tempted to part with my cash.

I'm not a huge buyer of stuff these days but I do like to see campaigns like this one from Brita Hirsch and her mission to produce British bred and woven top quality merino wool fabric. It seems to me that that was what these sites were built for: small companies, often start-ups, raising cash via buyers interested in their products. It's a useful way to find new customers and raise finance at the same time. Plus you can test market sentiment and get some initial feedback. In fact, I'd say it was an elegant solution for the likes of Brita.

I do feel a bit uneasy when I see the likes of Bose Corporation crowdfunding their latest new product on Indiegogo - a pair of noise-masking sleep buds. I see Bose as a very well-established brand and corporation with decades of experience in designing, producing and distributing new products. I would even go as far as to say they're one of the best audio brands out there, so why on earth are they on Indiegogo?

I get the commercial rationale... friends have reminded me that it's a good way to test the market and to make sure they're on to a winner before going into production. The customer feedback they get is invaluable to improve the product before finalising it. And it derisks all of that.

I'm still uncomfortable with it. Maybe it's an Indiegogo problem in accepting such a large company on to the platform. They know their commission is going to be great when a company like Bose gets on board and they need to make money. At the time of writing, they've raised $445,951 which is almost 900% over their initial goal. And that commission will help subsidise the products that fall by the wayside and the start-ups, that just don't make the grade. Nevertheless, I can't help feeling they're hijacking something that was meant to support and promote a completely different type of company. If you have big bucks to begin with, you can invest much more to promote your Indiegogo campaign. You can use it to generate new consumer interest in a way that advertising alone would struggle with. Arguably, it's great marketing that with the best will in the world a small company cannot compete with.

But is Bose's success at the expense of the underdog? And if so, does that matter?

A Programming Digression: Kaprekar Numbers

Earlier this week I learned about Kaprekar numbers when someone re-tweeted this my way:

Kaprekar numbers are numbers whose square in that base can be split into 2 parts that add up to the original number

So, 9 is a Kaprekar number, because 9 squared is 81 and 8+1 equals 9. 7777 is, too, because 7777 squared is 60481729 and 6048 + 1729 equals 7777.

This is the sort of numerical problem that is well-suited for the language my students are writing a compiler for this semester. I'm always looking out for fun little problems that I can to test their creations. In previous semesters, I've blogged about computing Farey sequences and excellent numbers for just this purpose.

Who am I kidding. I just like to program, even in small language that feels like integer assembly language, and these problems are fun!

So I sat down and wrote Klein functions to determine if a given number is a Kaprekar number and to generate all of the Kaprekar numbers less than a given number. I made one small change to the definition, though: I consider only numbers whose squares consist of an even-number of digits and thus can be split in half, a lá excellent numbers.

Until we have a complete compiler for our class language, I always like to write a reference program in a language such as Python so that I can validate my logic. I had a couple of meetings this morning, which gave just the time I needed to port my solution to a Klein-like subset of Python.

When I finished my program, I still had a few meeting minutes available, so I started generating longer and longer Kaprekar numbers. I noticed that there are a bunch more 6-digit Kaprekar numbers than at any previous length:

 2: 3
 3: 2
 4: 5
 5: 4
 6: 24

I started wondering why that might be... and then realized that there are a lot more 6-digit numbers overall than 5-digit -- ten times as many, of course. (D'oh!) My embarrassing moment of innumeracy didn't kill my curiosity, though. How does that 24 compare to the trend line of Kaprekar numbers by length?

 1: 1    of        9  0.11111111
 2: 3    of       90  0.03333333
 3: 2    of      900  0.00222222
 4: 5    of     9000  0.00055555
 5: 4    of    90000  0.00004444
 6: 24   of   900000  0.00002666

There is a recognizable drop-off at each length up to six, where the percentage is an order of magnitude different than expected. Are 6-digit numbers a blip or a sign of a change in the curve? I ran another round. This took much longer, because my Klein-like Python program has to compute operations like length recursively and has no data structures for caching results. Eventually, I had a count:

 7: 6    of  9000000  0.00000066

A big drop, back in line with the earlier trend. One more round, even slower.

 8: 21   of 90000000  0.00000023

Another blip in the rate of decline. This calls for some more experimentation... There is a bit more fun to have the next time I have a couple of meetings to fill.

This is an interesting and well-written article discussing the interactuon between young American university students and the developing world (though of course the observations apply more broadly). The thesis is that when these students come to 'help', they bring with them their own expectations, culture and epistemology, and are often, first, shock, and second, less than helpful. What is required, writes the author, is a clear setting of expectations by the organizers, and greater humility on the part of the students. It's an old message, but it's a good reminder for everyone (including me). Be sure to read the comments; there's a lot more good stuff in there and a minimum of trolling.

Unfolding the Future: Autonomous Lanes

Despite all the talk (and hype) about autonomous vehicles arriving in our cities in the next decade, the problem is not so much technology as humanity.  Regulating the complex, messy spaces of a dense urban environment will also require preventing human beings from doing silly things outside the vehicles and on the streets, where they can’t be rationally programmed.  (Yes, I’m thinking of you, cyclists, who will more than ever be able to go wherever they want without fear of distracted or crazy drivers.  How long will it take the AV lobby to want to prohibit any user on the road that isn’t also rationally programmed?)

So where could AVs go now that provides exclusivity for vehicles, and physically prevents other users from sharing the space?  Why, freeways of course.  And that’s already occurred to proponents around the world, including some nearby.

There’s no question that self-driving vehicles are the future. But Seattle-based venture capital firm Madrona Venture Group is hoping to get the jump on the autonomous car future by proposing one of the country’s first dedicated self-driving car lanes, running along I-5 between Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia.

Madrona envisions the lane completing over the next 5 to 15 years, starting with introducing autonomous cars into the HOV lane. Eventually, the lane would be entirely reserved for self-driving vehicles. …

Connecting these two centers with a dedicated autonomous vehicle lane would improve the link between the cities while costing significantly less than a proposed $30 billion high speed train line.

There’s another reason why these kind of proposals could be pushed forward aggressively: they would allow the elimination of truckers (the most common job in many U.S. states.)  That’s a huge economic incentive, regardless of the political pushback – and the single jurisdiction of most interstate freeways would make it easier to do it.  But again, it’s not the ability to invent and manage technology that matters as much as adapting and managing the humans.

Dueling Camera Apps

I got a Pixel 2, largely because it’s said to have a really great camera, with software-driven magic — machine learning at work. Here are two shot comparisons between the Google and Lightroom Android camera apps to see what that means in practice.

Why Lightroom?

Given a choice, I prefer the Lightroom app to Android’s. It has better, more intuitive ergonomics, including a level; makes the phone feel more like a camera. Also, you can edit in the Android version of Lightroom, which has basically the same controls as the desktop version I live in. Also, it shoots and edits DNG “RAW” files. Finally, anything you don’t erase is synced through the Adobe cloud and is auto-magically there in my Mac Lightroom’s “All synced photos” collection. (Yes, even in the Lightroom CC Classic version.) Not only that, but when I edit it on the Mac, the edits are synced back to the phone, so I can show people the improved versions while we’re having lunch. A pretty sweet package, all things considered.

There is a fly in the ointment. The Lightroom app’s pix’s names may end with “.dng” but if you’re used to the massive depth of the files like the ones I get from my Fujifilm XT-1, where you can pull lost beauty out of darkness or dazzle, you’ll be disappointed. Sure, you can pull the “Highlights” slider down or the “Shadows” slider up, and it sort of works, but not like with real camera files.

When it doesn’t matter

These days all cameras are great, given enough light and an appropriate subject. I’ve pretty well totally stopped using the 10-24mm wide-angle with the big camera because my phone is basically Good Enough.

So if we’re going to compare these apps meaningfully, we need to work with hard-to-take pictures that stress out the sensor; the most obvious examples are low light and high contrast.

Well, in November in the Pacific Northwest there really isn’t that much high contrast, but we got plenty of low light. I tried for a different kind of high contrast anyhow like so.

I’m going to call this one pretty well a wash. The Android-camera version achieved slightly sharper focus, but that’s not really the point in an impressionistic piece like this. What’s significant is that I had to put in a couple minutes photo-editing on the Lightroom DNG to get it to look as good; the sky had a bit of grey luminance noise and the whole scene leaned yellow. Having said that, I like photo-editing.

Oh, I didn’t say, did I? It’s Lightroom above, Android below.

So what the Android camera is doing here is taking whatever comes off the sensor, putting it through a little photo-editing session right there on the camera, giving me a JPEG, and saying, in effect, “don’t bother your pretty little head about how I got this.”

Finally, I’m usually really happy with Lightroom’s photo-export software, but in this case both pix lost some life, in particular in the trolley-wire sparkles and taillight reds. I’m going to have to try some new tricks.

Also worth noting: These are not terribly difficult or challenging for the sensor: The objects in the picture are pretty well self-illuminating.

When it matters

Here’s a hard one, our new calico cat, asleep on the sofa after a hard night of watching Star Trek Discovery with Mom & Dad. This is a softly-lit book-lined room with black furniture and a dark floor. And, in this case, Android pretty well wiped the floor with Lightroom.

Once again, Lightroom above/Android below. That Lightroom version has been heavily edited, and it’s still not close. The Android version has truer colors, better focus, and less noise. I’m seriously impressed with whatever is going on inside that app.

You know, when you look at the two of these side by side in Lightroom on my 15" Retina Mac screen, it’s like night and day. But as I look at the 720-wide presentation here in the blog draft, I wonder if the differences really matter.

More on the Android app

It’s nice, but trying too hard. No, I don’t want a little slab of video prepended to my photos so they shimmer into place (and can’t be edited). No, I don’t want color-balance modes, since the ML seems to get that right.

Also, since everything is apparently auto-magically cloudified, there ought to be an easy/automatic way to get the full-rez versions of the pix out of the cloud and into Lightroom, but I haven’t found it yet. For the moment, I share from the phone to Dropbox, and Lightroom is happy pulling from there.

Also it’s dumb that I have to switch apps to edit the photo I just took, and then the editing controls are all presets and oversimplification. Having said that, the app has a Chromecast button, which is super nice.

What next?

For shots that don’t challenge the camera, I’ll go on using Lightroom; it’s a better shooting experience and better integrated with my workflow. When it gets tricky, I’ll bring that Android ML to bear.
