Your Mental Map of the World is Wrong

A nice summary from National Geographic (who better) on the misconceptions of the world’s geography because of distorted maps and our need for simple mental images.

For example, in reality:

  • Most of South America is east of Florida.
  • Most of Africa is north of the Equator.
  • Most of Europe is east of Canada, not the US.

 

 

 

Mercator maps are particularly egregious when it comes to imagining the relative size of places.

  • South America is eight times larger than Greenland
  • Brazil is larger than the contiguous US, and almost as big as Canada.
  • Alaska is smaller than Libya.

Chromecast can soon be added to Google Home multi-room speaker group

Creating a Google Home audio group is an easy way to add multi-room audio to your house.

Now, with the addition of Chromecast integration, you can add your TV speakers to audio groups too.

Before this update, only Google Cast speakers and Chromecast audio devices could be used in an audio group, leaving out televisions, which in some cases could be the best speaker in your home.

To make this feature work, you’ll need to join the preview program through the Google Home app. To do this, you need to enroll in the preview program through the Chromecast’s settings page.

Google only accepts members for the preview program in waves. This means that if the option isn’t there, you’ll then need to try and join another time.

If you’re already a member, or if you are lucky enough to enter the program, you can play multi-room audio with your TV by adding it to an audio group.

When you play multi-room audio, the TV doesn’t display the regular ‘Now Playing’ screen, but rather the display’s ‘Ambient Mode’ with a smaller Now Playing icon displaying the song’s cover art in the bottom left-hand corner, according to XDA Developers.

It’s unclear if this means that Cast TVs or Chromecast-enabled TVs will be getting multi-room audio support as well, but MobileSyrup has reached out to Google for clarification.

London’s Commercial Areas Designed for Pedestrians and Cyclists Boon for Retail Businesses

Of course it makes intuitive sense that active transportation users and bus commuters would frequent retail businesses more often than those constrained by  vehicles. But it is always better to have the hard facts on this data, and researchers in the City of London England have done just that.

Transport for London (TfL)  in Great Britain has released a new study  with some staggering statistics about what happens when street improvements are made to facilitate walking and cycling. Time spent on retail streets increased by 216% between shopping, patronizing local cafes and sitting on street benches. Retail space vacancies declined by 17%.  London’s Business Improvement Districts are 90% in favour of more street improvements to facilitate pedestrians, and 85% in favour of better facilities for cyclists.

But the best news, and this is also in line with research conducted in Toronto and in New York City “people walking, cycling and using public transport spend the most in their local shops, spending 40% more each month than car drivers”.

The study for TfL was conducted by a researcher at University College London’s Bartlett School of Planning. Footfall and retail sales in unimproved areas were compared to shopping areas that had implemented improvements such as wider sidewalks, increased outdoor seating, public parks and pedestrian crossings.  Findings showed that retail rents  increased by 7% in improved areas, and office space rents increased by 4%, suggesting that the street improvements translated into much more desirable spaces. Local business improvement districts in London are also understanding the benefits of increased pedestrian and cycling clientele, with 90% seeing the advantages of pedestrian improvements and 85% wanting more cycling facilities in their area.

Will Norman, London’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner, said: ‘With businesses across London really struggling to survive, we have to do everything we can to support them.‘The evidence is clear – adapting our streets to enable more people to walk and cycle makes them cleaner, healthier and more welcoming, which encourages more people to shop locally.‘The benefits of designing streets around pedestrians and cyclists and reducing car use can be enjoyed by everyone and will help ensure the future of our high streets.’

And of course, more pedestrians and more cyclists on separated facilities, improved street design and slower speeds make roads safer and encourage travel to retail businesses by active transport, and make retailers more money.  This BBC video below has been just released talking about Vision Zero and how to make the streets of London safer for everyone.

Post-REST

More or less all the big APIs are RESTful these days. Yeah, you can quibble about what “REST” means (and I will, a bit) but the assertion is broadly true. Is it going to stay that way forever? Seems unlikely. So, what’s next?

What we talk about when we talk about “REST”

These days, it’s used colloquially to mean any API that is HTTP-based. In fact, the vast majority of them offer CRUD operations on things that have URIs, embed some of those URIs in their payloads, and thus are arguably RESTful in the original sense; although these days I’m hearing the occasional “CRUDL” where L is for List.

At AWS where I work, we almost always distinguish, for a service or an app, between its “control plane” and its “data plane”. For example, consider our database-as-a-service RDS; the control plane APIs are where you create, configure, back-up, start, stop, and delete databases. The data plane is SQL, with connection pools and all that RDBMS baggage.

It’s interesting to note that the control plane is RESTful, but the data plane isn’t at all. (This isn’t necessarily a database thing: DynamoDB’s data plane is pretty RESTful.)

I think there’s a pattern there: The control plane for almost anything online has a good chance of being RESTful because, well, that’s where you’re going to be creating and deleting stuff. The data plane might be a different story; my first prediction here is that whatever starts to displace REST will start doing it on the data plane side, if only because control planes and REST are such a natural fit.

RESTful imperfections

What are some reasons we might want to move beyond REST? Let me list a few:

Latency

Setting up and tearing down an HTTP connection for every little operation you want to do is not free. A couple of decades of effort have reduced the cost, but still.

For example, consider two messaging systems that are built by people who sit close to me: Amazon SQS and MQ. SQS has been running for a dozen years and can handle millions of messages per second and, assuming your senders and receivers are reasonably well balanced, can be really freaking fast — in fact, I’ve heard stories of messages actually being received before they were sent; the long-polling receiver grabbed the message before the sender side got around to tearing down the PutMessage HTTP connection. But the MQ data plane, on the other hand, doesn’t use HTTP, it uses nailed-up TCP/IP connections with its own framing protocols. So you can get astonishingly low latencies for transmit and receive operations. But, on the other hand, your throughput is limited by the number of messages the “message broker” terminating those connections can handle. A lot of people who use MQ are pretty convinced that one of the reasons they’re doing this is they don’t want a RESTful interface.

Coupling

In the wild, most REST requests (like most things labeled as APIs) operate synchronously; that is to say, you call them (GET, POST, PUT, whatever) and you stall until you get your result back. Now (speaking HTTP lingo) your request might return 202 Accepted, in which case you’d expect either to have sent a URI along to be called back as a webhook, or to get one in the response that you can poll. But in all these cases, the coupling is still pretty tight; you (the caller) have to maintain some sort of state about the request until the caller has done with it, whether that’s now or later.

Which sort of sucks. In particular when it’s one microservice calling another and the client service is sending requests at a higher rate than the server-side one can handle; a situation that can lead to acute pain very quickly.

Short life

Handling some requests takes milliseconds. Handling others — a citizenship application, for example — can take weeks and involve orchestrating lots of services, and occasionally human interactions. The notion of having a thread hanging waiting for something to happen is ridiculous.

A word on GraphQL

It exists, basically, to handle the situation where a client has to assemble several flavors of information do its job — for example, a mobile app building an information-rich display. Since RESTful interfaces tend to do a good job of telling you about a single resource, this can lead to a wasteful flurry of requests. So GraphQL lets you cherry-pick an arbitrary selection of fields from multiple resources in a single request. Presumably, the server-side implementation issues that request flurry inside the data center where those calls are cheaper, then assembles your GraphQL output, but anyhow that’s no longer your problem.

I observe that lots of client developers like GraphQL, and it seems like the world has a place for it, but I don’t see it as that big a game-changer. To start with, it’s not as though client developers can compose arbitrary queries, limited only by the semantics of GraphQL, and expect to get uniformly decent performance. (To be fair, the same is true of SQL.) Anyhow, I see GraphQL as a convenience feature designed to make synchronous APIs run more efficiently.

A word on RPC

By which, these days, I guess I must mean gRPC. I dunno, I’m old enough that I saw generation after generation of RPC frameworks fail miserably; brittle, requiring lots of configuration, and failing to deliver the anticipated performance wins. Smells like making RESTful APIs more tightly coupled, to me, and it’s hard to see that as a win. But I could be wrong.

Post-REST: Messaging and Eventing

This approach is all over, and I mean all over, the cloud infrastructure that I work on. The idea is you get a request, you validate it, maybe you do some computation on it, then you drop it on a queue (or bus, or stream, or whatever you want to call it) and forget about it, it’s not your problem any more.

The next stage of request handling is implemented by services that read the queue and either route an answer back to the original requester or passes it on to another service stage. Now for this to work, the queues in question have to be fast (which these, days, they are), scalable (which they are), and very, very durable (which they are).

There are a lot of wins here: To start with, transient query surges are no longer a problem. Also, once you’ve got a message stream you can do fan-out and filtering and assembly and subsetting and all sorts of other useful stuff, without disturbing the operations of the upstream message source.

Post-REST: Orchestration

This gets into workflow territory, something I’ve been working on a lot recently. Where by “workflow” I mean a service tracking the state of computations that have multiple steps, any one of which can take an arbitrarily long time period, can fail, can need to be retried, and whose behavior and output affect the choice of subsequent output steps and their behavior.

An increasing number of (for example) Lambda functions are, rather than serving requests and returning responses, executing in the context of a workflow that provides their input, waits for them to complete, and routes their output further downstream.

Post-REST: Persistent connections

Back a few paragraphs I talked about how MQ message brokers work, maintaining a bunch of nailed-up network connections, and pumping bytes back and forth across them. It’s not hard to believe that there are lots of scenarios where this is a good fit for the way data and execution want to flow.

Now, we’re already partway there. For example, SQS clients routinely use “long polling” (typically around 30 seconds) to receive messages. That means, they ask for messages and if there aren’t any, the server doesn’t say “no dice”, it holds up the connection for a while and if some messages come in, shoots them back to the caller. If you have a bunch of threads (potentially on multiple hosts) long-polling an SQS queue, you can get massive throughput and latency and really reduce the cost of using HTTP.

The next two steps forward are pretty easy to see, too. The first is HTTP/2, already widely deployed, which lets you multiplex multiple HTTP requests across a single network connection. Used intelligently, it can buy you quite a few of the benefits of a permanent connection. But it’s still firmly tied to TCP, which has some unfortunate side-effects that I’m not going to deep-dive on here, partly because it’s not a thing I understand that deeply. But I expect to see lots of apps and services get good value out of HTTP/2 going forward; in some part because as far as clients can tell, they’re still making, and responding to, the same old HTTP requests they were before.

The next step after that is QUIC (Quick UDP Internet Connections) which abandons TCP in favor of UDP, while retaining HTTP semantics. This is already in production on a lot of Google properties. I personally think it’s a really big deal; one of the reasons that HTTP was so successful is that its connections are short-lived and thus much less likely to suffer breakage while they’re at work. This is really good because designing an application-level protocol which can deal with broken connections is super-hard. In the world of HTTP, the most you have to deal with at one time is a failed request, and a broken connection is just one of the reasons that can happen. UDP makes the connection-breakage problem go away by not really having connections.

Of course, there’s no free lunch. If you’re using UDP, you’re not getting the TC in TCP, Transmission Control I mean, which takes care of packetizing and reassembly and checksumming and throttling and loads of other super-useful stuff. But judging by the evidence I see, QUIC does enough of that well enough to support HTTP semantics cleanly, so once again, apps that want to go on using the same old XMLHttpRequest calls like it was 2005 can remain happily oblivious.

Brave New World!

It seems inevitable to me that, particularly in the world of high-throughput high-elasticity cloud-native apps, we’re going to see a steady increase in reliance on persistent connections, orchestration, and message/event-based logic. If you’re not using that stuff already, now would be a good time to start learning.

But I bet that for the foreseeable future, a high proportion of all requests to services are going to have (approximately) HTTP semantics, and that for most control planes and quite a few data planes, REST still provides a good clean way to decompose complicated problems, and its extreme simplicity and resilience will mean that if you want to design networked apps, you’re still going to have to learn that way of thinking about things.

Getting Members to Create Something Truly Valuable

Giving customers a place to chat with one another doesn’t directly boost customer loyalty.

This study closely mirrors our experience. Just chatting isn’t enough. What really matters is getting members to create things which are tremendously useful to the group.

This means giving members the tools, motivation, and opportunities to create something unique.

You need to provide members with the tools (or means) to create something unique. You might pay for them to access educational resources to create their own videos, give them insider information about the brand roadmap and needs, or have your own designers and staff support them in whatever they want to do.

You need to provide the motivation for them to create something special. This means unique access, tremendous recognition, or a feeling of having a big impact within their field. Remember the member motivation framework here. Align short-term (points/badges) and long-term benefits (rankings and reputations) towards creating something of value.

You need to provide the opportunities for them to create something special. Announce where you need help and let members submit and implement their ideas. Host challenges and activities. Let members host their own online workshops and training courses. Build a definitive database for people getting started, or about equipment, in its field etc…

In our quest to get people to chat we so often overlook that chatting is just one of many things people in a community can do to help one another. It’s far from the most valuable.

Better yet, when people do create something of genuine value they tend to share it far and wide. This takes them from loyal customers into proactive advocates.

What is the universal process pattern?

Part 3 of the functional architecture series. The universal process pattern is a schematic representation of software. For a software process to be useful, it needs input, it needs to calculate something from that input, and it needs to have some output or effect on the world.

Eric Normand: What is the universal process pattern? Hi, my name is Eric Normand. These are my thoughts on functional programming.

There is a book written by Zach Tellman called the “Elements of Clojure.” In that book, he talks about what a process is, and that a process requires three things to be useful. You can have a process without them, but then it’s not useful on its own.

The three things are, you need a way to accept input, a way to transform that input into an answer, do some calculation, and then send an output, have some effect on the world. It’s a good book. You should read it. A great book, actually.

I want to talk about it as it relates to architecture. If we look at this process pattern as a schematic for how our software should behave, it’s going to have this input. This is any kind of input. This could be user input. It could be web requests coming in. It could be stuff coming off of a cue. That’s input.

Then, there’s the output which is the effects it’s having on the world. It’s sending emails. It’s responding to the web requests. It’s displaying stuff on the screen for the user. Inside, there is some kind of calculation going on.

The way that this is designed is it’s done in a functional way. It’s done using a pure calculation, no side effects because all the side effects are captured in that output.

You can look at your software this way. If it’s just a monolith, it would be one big process just accepting input, transforming it, having an output. Or it could be, in a service-oriented or you might call it a microservices system. You would have a bunch of these little processes running. They can communicate. Part of the output could be a message sent to a different service.

This is a useful way of looking at your software, from a functional point of view. You push the input and output. You push the effects to the edges. It’s defined as this is the input, this is the output, but inside you have a functional transformation, some kind of calculation from that input to the output.

This is my third thought on functional architecture. I don’t think this thought is that deep. I thought it could be helpful to have this schema in mind, this schematic for how, if you had to draw it on the board because a lot of architecture is just drawing.

If you’re drawing it on a whiteboard, you could draw a box with arrows going in and arrows going out. What are the inputs? What are the outputs? That would help you organize the ideas and put some kind of structure to them, some kind of architecture to how to lay it out as opposed to, not considering those inputs and outputs separately.

That’s what really makes it functional, is that if those are actions the inputs and outputs they’re not controlled by the process. The outputs are, but the inputs aren’t. The outputs, once they leave the process, they are not controlled anymore.

If you look at it this way, you’re actually looking at it from a functional point of view. It is very similar to how the onion architecture is structured, that you have this layer on the outside that is doing all the input and output, all the reading and writing, all of the effects.

This is the third in this series of architecture thoughts. I don’t consider this that deep, but it’s been helpful for me to see a way to draw these things in a small way. Instead of having to draw a whole onion thing, you just draw these little boxes with lines and arrows. Awesome.

Canadian government invests $13 million in Montreal-based NorthStar

The Canadian government announced that it would invest $13 million in NorthStar Earth and Space Inc.

The Montreal-based start-up wants to use low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites to address challenges facing our planet. These satellites would collect valuable data and images both on Earth and in space.

The funding will come in part from the Strategic Innovation Fund, a $1.26 billion program to help make Canada a global leader in innovation, as well as the Quebec Economic Development Progam.

The former will invest $9.5 million in NorthStar. The latter will grant the company a repayable contribution of $3.5 million.

“NorthStar’s project demonstrates how Canada’s space sector is driving game-changing innovations and developing solutions to real-world problems,” said Navdeep Bains, the minister of innovation and of science and economic development.

“Our government’s investment will help ensure that Quebec remains at the forefront of advanced information technology, creating good jobs for the middle class and positioning Canada’s economy to be globally competitive.”

The funding will help NorthStar revolutionize the way people see the world. For example, the improved satellite images will lead to better forecasting and tracking of events, including forest fires, rising sea levels and oil spills.

Additionally, NorthStar will introduce a new, more effective method for tracking space debris.

Finally, the investment will enable NorthStar to collaborate with Canadian post-secondary institutions, train Canadian workers and students and implement a diversity and gender plan by 2019.

Neural networks to generate music

Kyle McDonald describes some of the history and current research on using algorithms to generate music. On how David Cope incorporated Markov chains to aid in his work:

In 1981 David Cope began working with algorithmic composition to solve his writers block. He combined Markov chains and other techniques (musical grammars and combinatorics) into a semi-automatic system he calls Experiments in Musical Intelligence, or Emmy. David cites Iannis Xenakis and Lejaren Hiller (Illiac Suite 1955, Experimental Music 1959) as early inspirations, and he describes Emmy in papers, patents, and even source code on GitHub. Emmy is most famous for learning from and imitating other composers.

I expected samples to sound robotic and unnatural, and some are, but some are quite pleasant to listen to.

Forty

Fortieth birthday coffee mug

Today I turned forty. This morning, Axl and Stan surprised me with coffee in bed, served in a special birthday mug that they created.

When getting ready for a birthday party this weekend, I shaved not only my beard, but also my nose and ear hair. It sums up turning forty nicely.

Much of the things they say about turning forty are true: getting adequate sleep has become a priority, you no longer recognize celebrities in magazines, forgetfulness starts to become a bigger issue, and when you bend down to pick something up, there is no guarantee that you'll make it back up.

I can't complain though. On days like today, when looking back at the previous decade, I'm reminded how lucky and privileged I am.

Much like I hoped I would when I turned thirty, I have accomplished a lot in my thirties — both personally and professionally.

Drupal, Acquia and Open Source have been at the center of my professional career for the last decade and it has changed my life in every way. I'm lucky that my work gives me so much purpose. My desire to create, build, sustain and give back is as strong as before — there is not much more I'd want professionally.

Throughout the past ten years, I've also accomplished a lot of personal growth. I smile thinking how I have become more generous with my "I love you"s. I've gained not just weight, but also a kind of resiliency and perspective that enabled me to better deal with criticism, conflict or setbacks at work. I've learned not to sweat the small stuff and I take pride in acting with integrity on a consistent basis. From that point of view, I look forward to growing up more.

I've seen more of the world in the last ten years than in the first thirty combined. My wanderlust continues to grow and I look forward to exploring more of the world.

I've also been writing on this blog throughout the past decade. That might sound odd to call out on a day like today, but it's an accomplishment to me. My blog could have faded away like most blogs do, but it hasn't. It is one of my longest running projects and a highlight of my thirties. Blogging has made me a better communicator and a more critical thinker. It touches me that some people have been reading my blog for over a decade, and have followed me throughout my thirties. Thanks for sticking with me!

Entering my forties, part of me has zero desire to slow down, while another part of me wants to find more time to spend with Vanessa, Axl, Stan, family and friends. By the time I'll be fifty, Axl and Stan will likely be in college and might have moved out. There is nothing more satisfying than spending time with loved ones, yet it is so hard to pull off.

Apple reportedly cuts production orders for iPhone XS, XS Max and XR

Apple has reduced production orders for all three of its new iPhones, according to a November 19th, 2018 report from the Wall Street Journal.

The decision comes following the company’s inability to accurately predict demand for the different elements of its current three-model iPhone lineup.

This is the second time in as many years that Apple has cut production orders for one of its newest iPhones. In 2017, overestimating demand for the then-new iPhone X, the tech giant cut orders for its first OLED smartphone by as much as 20-million units. Despite the decrease, the iPhone X went on to become the single-most popular smartphone model that year.

Due to the high average selling price of each iPhone model, Apple to some extent is shielded by downturns in global consumer demand. Apple also has its services business to help continue to grow revenue even if the iPhone falters.

The same is not true with Apple’s suppliers, however, who, according to the Wall Street Journal, have been thrown into turmoil by the ups and downs in iPhone demand.

An anonymous supplier told the Wall Street Journal, “Growth fixes a lot of sins. When it slows, rocks to start to show up in the bottom of the ocean.”

“Doing business with Apple is very risky as it often reverses what is has promised,” added the supplier, in the same interview with the Wall Street Journal.

Where the heck is Dog Mountain? Smart phone maps can lead tourists astray

On an old-fashioned paper map, Mount Seymour's Dog Mountain trail is a fairly easy hike to find. So why do so many people keep getting lost trying to find it?

It may have something to do with hikers using smart phone maps to navigate trails.

A search and rescue volunteer is raising the alarm about what he calls a dangerous trend for outdoor enthusiasts.

Mountaineering expert Alex Wallace says Google Maps and other apps often used by hikers can be misleading about the placement of mountains and hiking trails.

And hikers who rely solely on smart phones for directions in the outdoors are at great risk of getting lost, he said.

Maps misleading

Wallace says the placement of trails around Dog Mountain on Vancouver's North Shore is of particular concern.

During an interview at the popular trail, Wallace noted that the Google Maps erroneously indicated that the Dog Mountain trail was on a ski run.

Wallace says inexperienced hikers may not know the difference.

He said hikers who have no familiarity with the area — and who rely solely on a phone app — can easily be led down wrong paths far away from the actual peak.

Mike Danks of North Shore Search and Rescue said phone apps can be a useful aid for hikers, but they shouldn't be the primary navigation tool.

Danks urged hikers to use paper maps or GPS devices.

"Solely relying on an app that could potentially not be accurate is not the best idea," he said. "I highly recommend that you grab an actual map."

Dog Mountain has been the site of a number of North Shore Search and Rescue missions to find lost hikers. Wallace says people looking for the trail routinely miss the turn off and keep going. They end up confused, looking at their phones.

"They say, 'Is this the way to Dog Mountain?' And I say, 'Well you've missed the trail head. It was about a kilometre behind you near the parking lot. '"

'Grab an actual map from B.C. parks'

In October, the high profile rescue of a British national from North Vancouver's Grouse Mountain brought to light the problem of using a phone for navigation.

Michael John Buckingham was rescued by helicopter after 12 hours in rainy, wet conditions on a narrow ledge just above the mountain.

The 37-year-old was relying on the Maps.me app on his phone. He thought he was prepared.

Buckingham credited the North Shore Rescue team with saving his life.

"I can't praise them enough. I think about bits and start [to] cry at how lucky I am. I don't know how many people were up that mountain, but I'm thankful for every single one," he said.

Danks, of North Shore Search and Rescue, says the group is experiencing the busiest year ever and warns of relying on your phone.

"Solely relying on an app that could potentially not be accurate is not the best idea," he says. "I highly recommend that you grab an actual map from B.C. parks."

Danks says he is worried that too many people think their smart phone is all they need to navigate the rugged terrain of the North Shore.

'Sort of got turned around'

CBC spoke with some hikers who say they rely on more traditional navigation tools.

Murray Scadeng says he carries a spot GPS locator because of the spotty cell phone signal in the mountains.

Scadeng's friend, David Reid, added: "We've been up here before in the snow and sort of got turned around. So I think we're getting a little bit smarter about that...in not just relying on the phone."

But it isn't easy to have these errors corrected. Wallace says he's flagged the mistakes to Google but has yet to see a correction.

Google Maps did not respond to a CBC inquiry about the apparent errors. 

Smart phones are probably still a good way to stay in touch or signal for help, Wallace said. They are often useful to determine changes in the weather.

Mountain experts recommend hikers keep their phones off unless they need to use them and carry a spare battery.

Complaint filed against Surrey naturopath-turned-councillor who campaigned as 'physician'

A newly elected member of Surrey's city council who campaigned as a "community physician" without always revealing that she is a naturopath is now the subject of a complaint to her regulatory body.

Coun. Allison Patton, who was voted in last month as part of Mayor Doug McCallum's Safe Surrey Coalition slate, used her profession as a selling point during the campaign.

Patton described herself as "a community physician for over 17 years" in the biography on her campaign website, without noting that she is a naturopath. She also referenced her "medical practice" in a campaign video, but did not mention that she practices naturopathy.

Patton updated her bio on the Safe Surrey Coalition website to read "community naturopathic physician" last week, after she was contacted by CBC.

A member of the public filed a complaint on Thursday with the College of Naturopathic Physicians of B.C., alleging that Patton's campaign materials breached the college's advertising policy.

College policy says naturopaths can describe themselves as physicians or doctors, but "the designation naturopathic physician must be used each time."

According to the policy, "Physician, as a stand alone term, could imply another type of physician, for example an MD, even in a naturopathic setting."

In an email to CBC, Patton claimed she made it clear during the campaign that she is a naturopath.

"I have no desire to obfuscate that issue and I apologize to those who felt they were misled," she said.

Patton did not respond to a follow-up question about who wrote her campaign biography, writing instead: "I can assure you that there was enough information out there that I was a naturopathic doctor. We can nitpick about [instances] where the information was not there.

"I can assure you there was no intent to mislead anyone."

However, the "community physician" label made it into at least two local news reports about the campaign and election in Surrey.

The naturopath college's registrar, Howard Greenstein, said he could not comment on the complaint against Patton or the resulting investigation. 

This isn't Patton's first taste of political controversy. In 2012, she was kicked out of the B.C. Conservative Party after calling for then-leader John Cummins' resignation. She had been the party's Surrey-White Rock constituency president.

We've seen a number of breathless predictions for quantum computing in the last couple of years. This article throws a cautionary note into our coverage. Here's the problem: "A useful quantum computer needs to process a set of continuous parameters that is larger than the number of subatomic particles in the observable universe." This in itself in't a big deal; the computer on which I'm typing this has 64 Gig RAM, which has ((64*8)^2)-1) possible states. The problem is that unlike my computer, in a quantum computer, each bit is in a probabilistic state, not an on-off state. But so what? Why wouldn't 'gating' work? As one commenter says, you can emulate my computer "on a quantum computer with circuit depth 1 by applying e.g. Hadamard gates to each individual qubit." Of course, like everything else, the proof will come in the form of actual working quantputers.

The document itself is significant, and the interview contains a number of key points, including this: "What we are witnessing today is the capture of shared community resources by a handful of cash-rich conglomerates who want to monopolise every aspect of science communication. We as a community need to fight back against the monopolisation of our resources."

City Market – Westminster Avenue

The City Market was an ambitious investment, that proved to be a bit too out of the way to succeed. Built on Westminster Avenue (today’s Main Street) it was located on the far side of the bridge that crossed the False Creek Flats, so was effectively ‘out of town’. It was fabulously ornate and state-of-the-art , with a cast iron façade and a lot of glazing; seen here in 1910.

Opened in 1908, the market operations replaced an earlier city building that was re-purposed as City Hall. This building was an unusually decorative design by W T Whiteway, who supervised the site preparations in 1907, reporting to the Council Market and Industries Committee that “the market wharf had been completed by the B. C. Contract Co. in a very satisfactory manner. He had seen no traces of toredoes when examining it. He had examined other wharves near there and found that toredoes did not seem to in that part of False creek. It was decided to charge the cost of the roadway approaching the market to the board of works.” Bayfield and Williams successfully bid to build the market at a cost of $25,233. (Toredoes – shipworms – are the marine creatures – actually a type of saltwater clam- that live on wood, and tunnel into underwater piers and pilings causing damage and destruction to submarine timber structures).

The market opened in August 1908, and the Daily World reported the first day of operations. In passing it referenced what must have been the city’s first green roof, and a rather innovative way of attracting customers. “When the door of the new building with the imitation moss – covered roof, at the southern end of Westminster avenue bridge, were thrown open this morning there were many women present, for it had gone forth that the woman wan made the first purchase at the opening of the market would have, the honor of declaring the market open and also receive, as a premium, a leg of mutton. Besides the women who wished the honor and the mutton there were several hundred spectators, mostly of the male persuasion, who cheered the fair contestants. “All ready,” shouted the clerk. “All ready,” repeated the caretaker, and the echoes had not been caught up from the back walls before the rush was on“. The newspaper carried several columns of details of the competition for the mutton, won by Mrs. Allen of Columbia Avenue “A pyramid of boxes of plums foil over to the stairway and the crushed fruit mude the ascent more perilous. One lady fell and the othes rushed unchecked over her prostrate body, knowing that the plum would make a cushion to save her from injury, even if they did stain her frock“.

Despite attracting 3,000 customers on the first day, the market was soon a failure, with few residents having any other reason to travel so far out of the city in that direction. It closed in the early 1920s, and was leased to a variety of industries, including a wire works, poultry dealer and a fish ball manufacturer. In 1925 it burned to the ground; all the firefighters could do was save the lives of some of the chickens.

The site was reused by a variety of industrial companies, including Excelsior Paper Stock and Spicer’s Asbestos Ltd in the 1930s. Today it’s a surface parking lot owned by the City of Vancouver, awaiting a future development as part of South East False Creek.

LG G7 One the company’s first smartphone to receive Android 9 Pie update: report

The LG G7 One is the manufacturer’s first device to get Android 9.0 Pie, according to a Canadian XDA forum user.

The G7 One is part of the Google’s Android One program, which means the smartphone is guaranteed to get regular security updates and run a near-stock Android user interface.

G7 One users will also receive the November security patch within the 812MB 9.0 Android Pie update.

According to the XDA forum member, the update also includes improvements to the smartphone’s camera, though specifics have not been detailed.

It’s odd that LG released the V40 in the U.S. with Android 8.1 Oreo and not 9 Pie. Additionally, it’s unclear when the LG G7 ThinQ will receive the 9.0 Pie update.

LG, similar to Samsung, is typically slow to release its Android updates. That said, it’s a good sign that the G7 One is getting the update.

We’ve reached out to LG for more information regarding the update and to see which carriers are currently receiving 9.0 Pie.

Please recommend to me any science fiction/fantasy novels (maybe TV shows as well) that are well written, interesting, and essentially nonviolent. "Completely violence-free" isn't necessary. I'm particularly looking for novels aimed at adults that don't rely on combat scenes to advance the narrative, generate/resolve tension, or provide Crowning Moments of Awesome.*

Rationale: I've been thinking about how my humanist values are and are not reflected in my writing. I'm writing sff, though, and it's almost reflexive to put in fight scenes and have heroes shoot/kick/slice their way out of problems. I've also been watching various Star Trek series and Doctor Who, and it's sort of fascinating how the shows are pseudo-pacifist: the characters espouse nonviolence, but the body count is high. In contemporary fantasy novels, there's gun/blade fetishization everywhere. (Just look at the covers! Or my junior high notebook margins!) For years, this didn't bother me, but now it does. It's still surprisingly difficult to think about how to do it differently and still have an exciting, compelling story.

*N.B.: I love YA. I like Star Trek. I love Doctor Who and I even loved most of Torchwood. I like action movies and dark'n'gritty cyberpunk novels. I'm not saying any of these works are bad or that people who like them are bad! I'm just looking for some inspiring alternatives.

Looking for fantasy books hiding out in the non-genre section of the bookstore.

This question about science fiction in the general fiction section basically sums up my book preferences. But it focuses on science fiction, whereas I lean more toward fantasy. Lately it seems like there's been a surge of fantasy fiction hiding in other sections—The Tiger's Wife, The Snow Child, The Golem and the Jinni, and no doubt plenty of others.

So, what other fantasy books (or authors) aren't shelved in Fantasy?
